That church you went into was a great find! I looked it up. Holy Baptistery of Saint Lydia of Philippi, completely in 1974. It definitely looks new. It's Byzantine Revival, which has dominated exclusively in Greece after WWII, and the "fat" shape of the church is very post-WWII (before WWII, churches are almost exclusively long aisled basilicas). What's remarkable about this church is that the art inside is exquisitely done. Most post-WWII church art is very low-quality. Until about WWII, it was common for the church to hire artists that had formal art school training, and they would do all kinds of art, from Byzantine Revival to Neoclassical and Romanticism, Baroque in the Ionian, etc. After WWII. the church stuck to just one style of art, its own interpretation of "Byzantine" and all artists were trained by the church in that style. So, in the 60s, 70s, we got all these cookie-cutter mediocre churches. This one is very exceptional for its time, because the art is stunning; this artist did an excellent take on Byz Revival, and the architecture is great too. Great find!!
Metsovo: that church is medieval, but it was destroyed and modified over the centuries. The exterior is typical local architecture. Interior: Epirus has these subtle Renaissance influences, because nearby is the Ionian coast/islands which had the Renaissance under Venetian control, and some of that influence traveled to inland Epirus. So, the interior architecture, art, frescoes, etc, are a mishmash of medieval-Byzantine, Renaissance, and 19th & 20th centuries, as they kept repairing/modifying the church over the centuries. Glad you stepped inside that one too!

Epirus also had Venetian rule. It had also Armatolous that were based in Agrafa (unregistered) witch was never under Ottoman rule. See also Dionysios Skylosophos and "Koinon of the Zagorisians "

@@aokiaoki4238 Coastal Epirus, yes. Hence I pointed out "Ionian coast/islands" 🙂 Skylosophos led a revolt against the Ottomans, and fought against them with Spanish help; this is very common across Ottoman Greece, with either Venetian help, or Austrian help, Spanish, etc. But my point is simply the *art* history of Epirus.

Like having a history that goes back several thousands of years, or how beautiful that church was, the art, or even just having so many options to go sit at a nice harbor with the family etc. God bless Macedonia, and God bless Greece.

@@RovexHD Petrota used to be a quite big village in the early 20th century however about 200 people live there nowadays. It's famous for the zeolite minerals and there is also a stone museum with a small exhibition, mainly millstones. There are some trekking trails along the Greek-Bulgarian border close to Pentalofos and Petrota villages and a nice hotel-restaurant offering dishes based on wild animals raised nearby. The area however is not touristy at all so do not expect any serious infrastructure.

We really don't see the importance of these historical locations and keeping them intact because losing that aspect of the past will be dictated by another form of it therefore erasing knowledge of it. Lydia was the first European Christian, who was baptized by the Apostle Paul. On the Zygactis river, west of Philippi and at the border of the settlement of Lydia, the Holy Baptistery of Agia Lydia was built in 1972, following the inspiration of the then Metropolitan of Philippi, Neapolis and Thassos, Alexander. It soon became internationally known and is a pole of attraction for believers who came for pilgrimage or for baptism from every corner of the earth. The Church dedicated to Saint Lydia, gathers the faithful to honor Lydia the Philippian Apostle on May 20 every year, performing adult baptisms in the open-air Baptistry of the Zygactis river.

The aqueducts were built under the Roman Empire - so they are Roman, if you actually said "the kamares", meaning the aqueduct in front of you. Its clearly not a Turkish creation.

There are about 2-3 mosques from the Ottomans to be found in Greece, that they left (yet still not demolished by a proper right-wing government), and thats it.

If you ever go to Peloponnese and you are looking for wild and remote places / beaches, visit Tainaro and the whole coastline around that. In cape Tainaro, according to the legends, you will also find the Cave of Hades where the entrance to the underworld was supposed to be. Also there is a town called Kyparissi where Dodi al fayed and Diana used to sail. These two are one of the most remote and difficult places to get in Peloponnese. Finally near Pounta there is the Pavlopetri, an ancient sunken city. From there you can cross to Elafonisos island where you will find Simos, one of the nicest beaches in Greece. On your way back, do not forget to visit Monemvasia, one of the most well preserved Byzantine towns.
