    Gerge. Id love for you to do this in terms of the average golfer who drives the ball around 250 and not 300+ yards. What is the best way for someone like that to manage the par 5s?

    Another tip I use is to keep track of what club I use free the tee and other places on the course? If I hit a shot and it's not enough, I write it on the scorecard as a fraction like 8/7?

    • @touristguy87
      @touristguy87 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      ...center-fairway is rarely a bad spot.
      You don't get there consistently by worrying about distance off the tee and then trying to hit long irons.
      If you're a "shorter" player or you have problems with consistency (basically the same thing) the key to Par5s (and long Par4s and Par3s) is to GET IN PLAY off the tee and STAY IN PLAY on your approaches. And the key to doing that is very simple.
      First, when driving, tee the ball downrange of your stance, high enough so that you can easily swing up into the ball without any problems, definitely without bouncing the driver. So many people can't control their drives for that simple reason, they do not even worry about hitting the ground with their drivers, and then struggle to get distance because they are playing their drives too far back in their stance. Put the ball up on a tee forward of your stance and just rotate and swing up through the ball. Works like a charm. If you're getting too much height that way, try teeing the ball down a little, closing the clubface and/or swinging with lag but you never want the ball to be so low that your driver hits the ground. Second, when hitting irons, put the ball back in your stance, almost to your trail foot, and swing through the ball with lag, moving your target point from center out to about 30 to 45 deg to the side as you go down in number with your irons. 9 irons should be aimed down the shotline aligned with your toes or possible a skosh left of that, 5, 4, 3 and 2 well right of that shotline. I usually play my 5 iron about 15 degrees right, 4 iron just off that and so on. Moving the ball back forces you to swing and hit with lag to avoid burying the club in the ground, hitting with lag gives you a clean clubface to present to the ball which improves strike quality, and aiming out to your right forces you to stay upright, keep the lag through the swing and impact and altogether you get better contact with higher loft and more consistent ball-flight and direction control. You get more distance with less effort, less effort means better clubface-control, better clubface control means better height, less spin, more distance and accuracy and far fewer long clubs into the woods...it's a win-win situation.
      But the main thing that you have to remember is that the key is to GET IN PLAY and STAY IN PLAY. You're not wasting strokes by trying to hit the ball far to save shots. You're saving strokes by not wasting balls trying to hit the ball far to save strokes. You're saving strokes by keeping the ball in play and giving yourself good clean lies and good angles to the green. You're playing with the 3 stroke rule in mind: even on a 600 yard Par 5 it should take at most 3 shots to get to the green, and they only need to be decent shots at that: 1 200-yard drive and 2 200-yard irons. And if you don't think that you can really reach a Par-5 in 3 shots, then take 4. Take a bogey. Such is life. Move on. Don't throw-away strokes trying to overplay your game. It does help to practice and get used to long holes by regularly playing from the back tees.

    If your going to the Open, you need to stay out of the rough at all cost. It's not like missing the fairway on your course. Ok, your driver is good. If it is that good, your 3 wood should be really good. If it isn't, you need to work on it. And your rescues and driving iron, if you have one. You are long enough to get those plenty far on trouble holes. I would leave the driver at home and dial in your weakest parts of your game. Tiger got better when he started laying up. Your long is good. Your short game is really good. Make your long game really good. Good luck. Hope your swing is on in qualifying. And really on during the Open.

    These are all great tips but you are driving it long and these are relatively short par 5's. Most of us need 3 if not 4 shots to get on the green and it would be more useful to see this video with longer par 5's that you can't easily reach in 2

      @@BryanBrosGolf I agree but I do believe a very useful tip that you missed out on is about planning the hole. For example, hit driver, 5 iron to leave yourself 100 yards or a full PW in and then go for the green. Or alternatively, hit driver 3 wood and leave yourself the shortest possible 3rd shot in. These are the sorts of things that would be really useful. Personally I would rather have a shorter 3rd shot even if a half shot, than a full PW

    I bet greenskeepers and anyone that is playing along behind you will appreciate the way you just dropped the flagstick on the ground on that first hole thereby possibly causing dents in the green. Arnold Palmer once said that if he saw a golfer doing that on his course at Bay Hill that golfer would be escorted off the course immediately. Flagstick poles being metal are quite heavy and should have a bit of care used when laying them down after pulling them from the cup.
