My wife and I saw Tom Jones live in Las Vegas in 1973. Knowing he had one of the most powerful voices ever, we were blown away that he performed more than 30 songs during his two hour plus show, and yet he was just as powerful and clear at the end as was when he started. Truly was one the best performances we had ever seen from any singer. At the end, the ladies were flinging their bras, panties, and flowers onto the stage.

Growing up in the 90s and 00s, all I knew from Tom Jones, was "Sex Bomb", which I've always disliked. That, "Kiss" and a few other songs were basically the only songs of his I knew. Then I discovered this live performance about a year ago. I was stunned.
Holy shit, the man could sing! And with such power.
I also, only a year or two ago, realised how insane "The BeeGees" were. - Totally unrelated, but still. Only knew them from "Staying Alive"

Of course, he's masterful at love songs, power ballads, and pop tunes... but with that superb voice and control, and his love for a wide range of music, he's done amazing performances in many genres. ya you totally get it, darling. like you said, the moment he starts singing he just radiates uncompromised masculine power and confidence, and you just know this is gonna be great. the way he attacks a note at full power and hits it pitch-perfect-- that is something many opera singers cannot do. many singers stand like they're giving a lecture, but tom jones has more of a fighter's stance, drawing power from the floor, bring it up to his diaphragm, and it rises from there flowing into all kinds of tonality and dynamic expression. he's an awesome ladies man and a consummate vocal artist the likes of which we will never see again

I thought Jones was a more powerful and more "manly" singer than Elvis. There are no singers like that today. I find that sad. This song was written for him by the late great Lonnie Donegan. Tom Jones as a vocal coach on "The Voice" heard a singer on the show that he recognised. It was the son of LD. Tom chose him after his audition and they performed this song together. In his 80's he still belted it out - fantastic! Look up the performance on TH-cam and comment on that!

You mention the Voice in the UK listen to him singing Cry To Me an impromptu performance unrehearsed the audience were calling for him to sing so he did and he smashed it at the age of 82 he sounds better than many of todays singers and it is all him no auto-tune just pure Tom Jones

Billboard Magazine rated this as the 2nd greatest live performance of the 1960's ( behind The Righteous brothers Bobby Hatfield singing, ' Unchained Melody ' on the Andy Williams Show at # 1. ) Jones, like Bob by Hatfield was nicknamed, ' 1-take Tom ' because he always nailed it on the 1st take, whether it was in the studio or when he sang a song live like this that was being recorded. Btw, Jones NEVER had a vocal lesson. Keep in mind, in the 1960's, there was NO autotune. Jones killed it EVERY time he sang

Just a little short history. Tom Jones was a coal miner in Wales as a young man. On Saturday nights in the local town pub, Tom would be encouraged to sing all night for free beer. Someone (a talent scout) spotted him in the pub one night and suggested that he audition for a record company. He made 'It's Not Unusual' and a new star was born. In the late sixties he had a weekly variety show on BBC tv and it was the best show on the air. Today, in his eighties, Tom can still sing all of his hits and they sound just as good as they did years ago. A real artist!

    • @Sometimes-even-lyrical
      @Sometimes-even-lyrical 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@Chris Whyte ...Just a few corrections.... Tom's father was a coal miner, but Tom never worked in the mines.
Tom contracted tuberculosis about the age of 11 or 12, and was confined at home for two years recovering. He wasn't supposed to sing or talk or go out to school or play with his friends during that time.
He had regularly sung at school and chapel as a lad, and he loved to sing. It was always his dream to be a singer, but most youth there ended up becoming coal miners at a young age. However, the doctors made it very clear to his parents that Tom must never go to work in the mines. It would kill him. So, by 15 he was working odd jobs, but never did go down in the mines.
Tom married at age 16, and with a baby on the way he went to work in construction, had a job in a glove factory, and also sold vacuum cleaners door-to-door to support his little family. But it still was his dream to be a singer, and sang most evenings and weekends in the workingmen's clubs and pubs.
Tom eventually was heard by a musician and business man from London who's happened to be visiting family near where Tom was singing. That man realized Tom has an amazing voice and masculine appeal. He struck up a conversation with Tom and convinced Tom (and himself) that he could manage Tom's career.
So Gordon Mills became Tom's manager and brought him to London. He also wrote the song that became Tom's big break, "It's Not Unusual."

that song was written by Lonnie Donegan who was a well known singer in England himself which came to light on the Voice UK when Lonnie's son Peter was a contestant and Tom was the sole coach to turn for him. So when Peter introduced himself Tom asks him if he is any relation to Lonnie Donegan and Peter says "that's my Dad" and Sir Tom answers with " no - - not really " shocked that this is his old friend's son. Tom and Lonnie actually did play out together and of course Lonnie had written Tom's big hit I'll Never Fall In Love Again for him so Tom asks Peter if he knows the song and the Peter and Tom do an impromptu concert together - - if you use Peter Donegan its easy to find on You Tube

When it comes to Tom Jones I’m still speechless! This is ur first seeing him, u know what it was like seeing him for the first time at 7 yrs old on ur bday. I’m just about 60 & I remember it like yesterday. It was all planned & I mainly was only child there, he sang couple songs & after he announced someone’s bday then he came straight over to me. He asked questions & I told him I was 7 he asked my dad something then he leaned over gave me a kiss on my lips & lol took a sip of my drink & sent more over then got up sang happy Birthday. After that he sang this song & green grass of home one of my favorites. He is a great person and artist. Have a lovely day and night Ciao

Tom Jones was underrated for the day because of big names (The Beatles, etc.) that were popular at the same time. But his voice was truly one of the very best ever. Check out some of his other songs, like "Delilah", "Without Love", and "I Who Have Nothing" (you’ll be glad you did). You may want to also do some reaction videos on Engelbert Humperdinck, another gentleman with an incredible voice that was popular around the same time as Tom.

Once upon a time... long ago... singers could actually sing.
From the 70's garage bands popped up on every corner. Only the best bands had hit songs.
Mid 70's Punk Rock showed image was more important than singing
Mid 80's Grunge appeared. The air waves were flooded with mediocrity.
Rap was all about the personalities. Minorities, equality, diversity
Now it's all about marketing and looks before singing ability
It's so good to see reactions to the best singers of the past.

I'm sure you will be excited to know .......In 2006 Jones was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. His 2010 album Praise & Blame was a mix of gospel, blues, spirituals, and folk music and earned him stellar reviews, and his Spirit in the Room (2012)-covers of songs by musicians such as Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, and Paul Simon-was also well received.

As great as Dimash is, I still wish I could sing like Tom.
It is really a shame that there is no one, today, who can sing like this man.
You would've been a huge fan of him, back in the day. 😊
There are few performances that rival this one. Elvis performing 'Supsicious Minds,' in Vegas is one of the few.
