- USS Theodore Roosevelt is a Nimitz-class nuclear powered aircraft carrier in the United States Navy. In this compilation video of the USS Theodore Roosevelt super aircraft carrier, takeoffs and landings of US Navy fighter jets, helicopters and reconnaissance aircraft, flight deck operations, cargo transportation between other ships by helicopters. She is named in honor of Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States.

I don't think this ship or anything on it is 36 years old this was just commissioned like last year the old USS Roosevelt was decommissioned in 77 and I don't think there's steam catapults on the new nimitz-class supercarriers think they're magnets

I served on the USS Midway’73 - ‘75 . After which I was on the USS Constellation ‘ 76 - ‘ 77 .
I worked arresting gear
V - 2 division . My only real hope was to serve on the USS Nimitz . The older ships were fine ( history ) but a nuke would have been better for the fact we would not have to stand down for hours every other week for refueling .

Me too! I was in A school when she was christened and stationed at NAS Oceana in 1986 when she was commissioned. I served on the USS Forrestal in VF31 from 85 until 88 and thought the Forrestal was sooooooo old. She was 30 years old, younger then the big stick is now. The only thing that is old is me!

That drone looks so wicked. Reminds me of the head on the alien ship in War of the Worlds. Those Phoenix missiles being loaded are still feared! over the horizon capability, my mom worked on that program at Hughes in the 80's.
Phoenix missiles was only carried on F14s.. I think what you sen was the AMRAAM / AIM-120D

No, that is incorrect. I was on CVN-71 which was commissioned in 1984. CVN-71 did the Gulf War deployment January - July 1991. I was in the Navy from 1976 - 1999. I'm also a plank owner on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower CVN-69.

What I am looking at are steam catapults in action. You can see the steam coming out of the deck. The Gerald R Ford is only aircraft carrier with electromagnetic launch system that patently doesn’t work. I can only assume we are looking at different videos, either that or you might need to do some fact checking in place of all the “thinking”.

Does anyone pick the helicopters or prop planes in pilot training, or are they reserved for the class clowns? Better than a non-flying job certainly, talk about envy having to watch jet guys go ballistic while your on mail duty. Support roles are vital, but to get so close to the tip of the spear and now, for the next 8 years you get to support the tip. I have noticed, navy pilots dont really have big egos, they dont need them - they know they are the best - support roles and all they crash land on a matchbook in the middle of the ocean every single day. I dont know how they manage the humdrum of airline flying after this kind of action.

It's funny that there was never a carrier named in honor of Franklin Roosevelt. I mean Teddy was a decent president but he was nothing compared to Franklin. Outside of Washington and Lincoln there is no bigger president, although I think history will eventually reveal Ronald Reagan in that esteemed group.
But Teddy wasn't even around for aviation, didn't have even the slightest connection to aviation. I will admit he did have a very significant naval connection although most would probably just think that was because he was the assistant Secretary of the Navy. Yes that had alot to do with it but his most significant connection to the Navy and our country by far, was when we Assistant Sec of the Navy he ordered the Pacific fleet then in Asia to steam to the Philippines as he believed war with Spain immiment. He sent have the authority to order the fleet to move, and the Admiral in command knew that and technically shouldn't have obeyed. You see Teddy waited until the Secretary was out of Washington on a planned trip which left him in charge temporarily, he then ordered the fleet move. If he had been wrong, if there hadn't been war with Spain then it most likely would have meant the end of Teddys career and any government aspirations afterward San Juan hill or not. But it turned out he was correct and the American fleet went on to destroy the Spanish Pacific fleet and capture the Philippines for America, the first overseas possession America was to have and certainly the most strategic. It made the fleet Admiral a hero and combined with his San Juan Hill exploits soon to follow in Cuba it made Teddy a household name, hero, and future president.
It so impressed his cousin Franklin that he tried to follow in Teddys exact footsteps, even becoming assistant Secetary of the Navy and attempting to raise a private volunteer company to fight in World War One like Teddy did in the Spanish War but Army officials wouldn't allow it, times had changed I suppose. But things worked out.
Franklin became the longest sitting president in history and the perfect president to take us through world war two.
In Franklin's time the Navy was forced to go from being battleship centered to becoming carrier centered as it remains today. Naval aviation won the Pacific war for America without doubt.
So why does the president who presided of that war and huge change not have a carrier named after him but Teddy Roosevelt, and Gerald Ford do neither of which has any significant naval connection at all.
To me it's a very good question I think the Navy needs to answer. FDR should have been honored far before those others, just as Nimitz was and for the exact reasons FDR should have been too in fact.
A bigger president would be Taft.
