Some things I would like to add: The resistance shred from his skill is actually tied to his shield, not the pillar he summons, so if the pillar is destroyed the resistance shred will stay, but if the shield is broken then it will disappear. Another great weapon for him is favonius lance as long as you have enough crit rate to activate the passive. Energy for your whole team is always good, and even if you have to switch to a crit rate circlet, his shield is still often strong enough that it won't be destroyed.
Yes Layla's shield is sometimes better than Zhongli's shield, but so is Thoma, Yanfei, and Kirara's shields. Most shields are stronger than Zhongli's shield if they are used against their own element, but Geo shields have the advantage of working extra well against everything.
