- Asus has refreshed their 2024 flagship 18” ROG Strix Scar with a superb QHD+ Mini LED display with over 2,000 local dimming zones, Dolby Vision HDR and 240Hz refresh rate. It’s also available in a 16” size, for those who prefer an easier carry. This is their top tier model, yet the price tag is very competitive. It has an Intel 14th gen Core i9-14900HX CPU, NVIDIA RTX 4080 or RTX 4090 dedicated graphics, a per key RGB keyboard and body lighting, and base RAM and storage of 32GB and 1TB. Cooling keeps things in control with Liquid Metal on both the CPU and GPU and a triple fan system.

Have this computer and it’s flippin’ awesome. Never really breaks a sweat on AAA games with the 4090 and good thermals.
What thermals do you get and what games do you play? Do you also use a cooling pad? Also did you undervolt?

Just picked this up, beautiful model, I actually upgraded from the 2023 which may have seemed pointless but I don’t regret it, in addition to the screen it has a GAN charger now and better speakers as well.
Thank you for this awesome video, I am leaning towards the Scar 18 hard but then MSI is about to release the Raider A14V with Wifi-7 and better IR camera.

FINALLY! Been waiting for a beast of a laptop from ASUS since I purchased my ROG G703GXR RTX 2080 in mid 2020. This would be a great upgrade to my current laptop. Can't wait to get my hands on this. Great vid 👌

Well Metal is a much better heat conductor. So having the entire chassis metal likely helps with cooling as well. Especially if they connect the chassis to the components via thermal pads or something

Is there an improvement in battery life for LED? Also screen reflection of light and is it more usable outdoors in sunlight?

@@ademolasodeke that's why i said Lenovo would be best with this screen. Using my legion 7 for over a year almost perfect laptop. Just screen is not that good with too much screen light bleed from corners. But i would rather have better service, support, & software & battery life than just 1 spec

haha thanks don't take me wrong ive got 3.2k screen with 600nits sdr brightness which is great for 1.2k i paid for the laptop im just used to extreme levels of screens like oleds & minileds. & in games you can't even see the light bleed its only when watching movies @@ademolasodeke
I daily use a Everki titan that supports 18-in laptops. It's a little pricey but it's a quality backpack with tons of space for a laptop and other electronic devices.
My scar 18 became a brick just after one year...I bought it in Feb. 2023, and it turned to a brick after I installed the docker on yet, it started with battery led blinking orange and the disk suddenly stopped, I had to reboot it again and again, even after I reinstalled the operation system, the problem remained, I had to send it to the local repair center. I heard that this problem is not very rare among scar18, 17, 16.

I have a 2022 strix scar.
I babied that computer compared to any of my previous computers, and had to get the motherboard replaced under a year of owning it.
After I started having issues, I learned it was a pretty common issue with the computer... 😔
I just bought one of those as is from eBay. Turns on, no video. No clue what the issue is. It’s crazy how common they are having big issues being so new. It’s a shame because I really think the design and aesthetic of them is great

I have one, and it feels to me like the macbook pro of windows laptops, the touchpad is excellent. The performance is incredible for game development... there are some kinks with the aura software on it and usb c external monitors issues which should get fixed in a future update.... but all in all a great laptop...
Lisa it is interesting that the current Strix Scar 18 in Australia has the 2TB drive.
yes they come standard with the 2 TB drives but it has room to upgrade to a 4TB max. Same for memory coming standard at 32gb but it has room to upgrade to 64gb

does ANY store carry this to view in person ? and is it truly 18" screen ? I should add I'm in the Los Angeles area thank you all I still remember the movie " wizard of Oz " If only I had a heart for Apple , but I hate ALL they do , and small screens on a M3 chip is a crime . my wife's 13" air laptop sits unused LOL
Last year's model, with 13980HX is more powerful. The only plus point of this model is the display.
Will wait for the next model, with the new rtx or and card and new intel/amd chip +TB5. This year is a minor update of minor update )) makes no sense to waste moneys. I am still on 11980HK and 3080RTX and it has similar performance/FPS.
Looks great for dedicated gamers, but it's not so good for media creators given that it's so low on USB-C type ports. I'd have to factor in a TB4 hub on top.
Watching this on my asus rog strix scar 18 4090 lol, such a beast of a laptop. I am coming from a 14 year old laptop that could barely run diablo 3
I got the ASUS - ROG Strix G16 16” 240Hz Gaming Laptop QHD - Intel Core i9-14900HX with 16GB DDR5 - NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 - 1TB SSD - Eclipse and I love it
For the same money, you can buy a threadripper and steal *a very long extension cord* & a shopping cart if you want to play mobile.

Only the Scar 16/18 versions with RTX 4090 have a mini led.
ROG Nebula HDR Display mini led 1100nit Rtx 4090 10 bit color.
ROG Nebula Display 500nit rtx 4080 8 bit color.
Nope, Strix Scar are all Nebula HDR (mini LED), at least in the US. We have a 4080 with mini LED in this very review. The non-Scar models (like G18) don't have mini LED.

I don't know which country are you from but if u r from India you need to tell the ASUS ROG store to reserve one piece for you by giving an advance amount. I got mine last month and I did the same. I couldn't find it in 2023 either but luckily got the latest model this time around.

I disagree a bit. The 4090 is the one you want to get for future-proof just the vram. Are we sure 12gb will be enough this year or next year?
Lol, i have the 4070 and run everything at ultra... i think the gpu companies are giving everyone a run for their money, games arent even needing that much gpu power yet...

I still don’t like how Windows handles HDR…SDR content looks washed out with it on so you have to switch it on and off as needed. At least that’s been my experience, I don’t know of a workaroud

10:06 for clarification, the Mini-LED display on this laptop is also an IPS panel (there are mini-LED VA panels out there from Samsung), therefore it's better to just say "regular backlit display"
Not a fan of Mini Led on a laptop. More issues than it's worth. If you watch movies on your laptop then it's great but I'll wait for a quality OLED or hopefully soon Mico LED.
Ive been reading nothing but complaints about the screens not having mini-led and now you say its not worth it!?
@@wardog5537 For SDR is not a huge difference. Yea movies are great. Only screen option that improves on the SDR experience is oled. Jarrod on TH-cam has a good review.

why does everyone act like the 5400.00 MSI 18 is the only spec? you can get the MSI 18 sped'd the same as the scar for the same price in the us...roughly 3900 for the 4090 and 3100 for the 4080 with 32gb ram with the upgrade path to go all the way up to 192gb ram if you choose to.
