  • In this episode of The Little Things, we take a journey deep into uncharted space to take a look at the Science Fiction Toys that were connected to Sci Fi films and television shows of the late 1970s and early 1980s. They often feature that distinct Sci Fi aesthetic, inspired by the Star War films, that was so prolific during that time. This is Part Two of a multiple episode arc that will take a look at the most popular, widespread and interesting of these Sci Fi toys from this time period. So sit down, strap in, and don't get cocky, because this ain't like dusting crops back at home.

    I know it's a cliché, but Tron was really ahead of its time. It's basically a variation of the story of Fantastic Voyage: instead of being inserted into a human body the main character is inserted into a computer world. It has a unique look and Jeff Bridges is great as Kevin Flynn. The 2010 sequel is rather superfluous.

    • @thelittlethings3309

      I really liked Tron as a kid. The year that it came out was a big year for films, but Tron is one of the movies I liked most at that time. I bought (asked for) everything I could find that was Tron themed and I think it really made an impression on me. The aesthetic of Tron still brings up some great memories and emotions and one day I would really like to own one of those arcade cabinets, if nothing else then just for the looks. Thanks for the comment!

    • @thelittlethings3309
      @thelittlethings3309  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Tron Legacy had some redeeming traits. A sequel to Tron was always going to be a hard sell, because time, films, technology, etc. had moved on so much since 1982, and Tron was, more than many other Sci Fi properties, holistically of "its time". The "look and feel" of Tron, those neon, glowing grids on a black background, was one of the signature looks of the 1980s.

    I still find it hilarious that Kenner had ALIEN toys, that 18" Big Chap that had the extendable jaw was amazing. I think it also glowed in the dark, a bonus. Chest-bursting for the entire family!

      Nothing says family fun like a horrifying alien beast from a film that no child under 10 should ever see. It really was a neat toy, though and I could see matriculating it in while playing with other toy lines as a kid at the time (if I had owned it). I probably should have mentioned it, but it feels more like an anomaly then fitting with the theme. Maybe I will put it in an addendum video. Thanks for the comment!

    No Uhura figure for Star Trek, and no Apollo figure for BSG?

    • @thelittlethings3309
      @thelittlethings3309  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Uhura never gets the love she deserves. There was the "almost Uhura" in the Galaxy Laser Team. It just takes a lot of imagination. Also, no Apollo is a major oversight. That's like not making a Han Solo figure! Thanks for the comment!

  • @timfankell4242
    @timfankell4242 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Mattel never fully commited to BSG because they feared the series might flop. Many of the toys were retooled from earlier product lines, and the vehicles were produced in the smaller scale to save money. No consideration was made for compatability with the 3 3/4" figures because those weren't introduced until late in the line (almost as an afterthought), by which time the show itself was already facing cancellation.

    • @thelittlethings3309
      @thelittlethings3309  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's interesting. I guess their fears were founded, in some ways. If I remember correctly, the cylons couldn't even move their legs. But, at least, they came with laser gun accessories. Thanks for the info.

      If it for John Dykstra spending oodles 🤑 on the pilot when most of the FX were reused through the series. Mr Larson may have had another season vs most of the cast replaced.

      @EdsterIII 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@thelittlethings3309 While I did love the Cylons in the show, the figures were underwhelming. Compared to say the Stormtroopers, or Darth Vader. But with kids, attention spans waver, fluctuate, and change like the wind. I for the most part stuck with Mego Superheroes action figures in the early-mid 70's, as well as Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars, then as I got older, Tyco/AFX tracks became my race choice. I tried the Sizzlers set and I loved it but I always lost things. Which became a problem with my Star Wars figures. I lost the accessories, blasters, and other necessities. My Mego Superheroes also lost their logos which were back then anyway a sticker. One more reason why I loved the Star Wars universe figures and then the plastic "suited" Superheroes. The one oddball that found it's way into my toy box was the Electronic NFL Football games and one NHL Hockey game that was played by using rods. I found that in one of the JC Penny's Christmas Catalogs and the Sears Wish Book that they sold not only full NFL teams, but you could get entire Divisions. The NFC had three, back then and the AFC had three. With one division on each side having only 4 teams and the other two having 5. So my team, the Green Bay Packers was in the one with only 4 teams so it was cheaper. However I ended up getting the entire league. But again a child's attention span can as I said flip flop in a second. One of my biggest and most used toys ended up being my Hot Wheels. With Star Wars being a close second. The 70's had SO MANY DIFFERENT toys, action figures. My Mego Planet of the Apes action figures were big favorites for me in the early/mid 70's. The Six Million Dollar Man figure was cool for maybe a week. Then he ended up somewhere in my Toy Box. The few GI Joe figures I had got lost. One was put in his raft after a nasty rain. The creek we had would rise and a current would show. I like a goofy kid thought HOW COOL WOULD THAT BE! Send Joe downstream on his raft/boat. It worked, except he took off downstream and I never saw him again. Last but not least were the Evel Knievel Stunt Bikes, Rocket, etc, and the SSP's race cars. I was racing my Evel Knievel bike down our road and one of the MEAN & GRUMPY old farts down the road saw it and decided to drive over him, destroying him in the process. Evel Knievel never recovered from that crash. Sorry for the long comment. When I start to remember and reminisce about my childhood growing up during the 70's I sometimes get lost in it. It was such, well at times it was a magical place. My family had issues, alcoholism, infidelity, and other not so fun things. Nothing like DUI accidents thank God! But for a 5-12 year old kid, it got a bit scary at times. Thankfully I had a great escape. My Grandpa and Grandma. They took care of me during some bad times. My Mom worked her butt off at an engine factory from 6am to 3 or 4pm. Then she'd work at one of the premiere restaurants in downtown Milwaukee on weekend and sometimes once or twice during the week. So my Grandparents would take over once in a while. That's why many times my Mego Superheroes and my Hot Wheels were some of the few toys I could bring with. Small and easy to pack up. But we also had some really great times, wonderful memories of Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, the 4th of July, and weekends at the 41-Twin Drive-in Theater. Life back then had some tough times but I have some really special memories as well, and my toys, sometimes my toys were all I had. So many of them hold very special places in my heart and my memory. God Bless, take care of each other, and I hope and 🙏🤲🕍🕌⛪🛕🙏pray everyone has a wonderful Christmas and a great New Year, and let's hope that this craziness comes to an end as well.

    The Buck Rogers starfighter was actually a rejected Ralph Mcquarrie design for the Battlestar Galactica colonial viper.

    I remember the Battlestar Galactica line. I remember the goofy "dog" looking figure. I had a few of them but the Cylon warriors were my favorite ones. I did have a few ships but Star Wars really had me. I liked Battlestar Galactica, but it just wasn't as expansive as Star Wars. Maybe since Star Wars wasn't always just based in ships out in space. There were planets, galaxies, and so many different types of creatures you had. The playsets helped as well. My Tattoine, Hoth, Death Star, and other sets made the world more "real" and unique while Mattel just never really got that feel. Plus Star Wars again had so many different unique villains, warriors, bounty hunters, and other accessories it again made the play so much more expansive and fun.

    • @thelittlethings3309
      @thelittlethings3309  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's definitely true and, I think, why Star Wars stood the test of time. I think, in many ways, Star Wars was always about the toys and merchandise for many of us. It was ground breaking and a lot of fun. Battlestar Glactica was good, and I liked it as a kid too, but the toys quickly became supplements for expanded adventures in that galaxy far, far away. Most of these toys, while great on their own merits, ended up that way. Thanks for the comment!

    Fun fact. The Buck Rogers Starfighter aka “the Thunderfighter” was originally designed as and intended to be the Colonial Viper for Battlestar Galactica. At the very last minute Larson ordered a change because the Starfighter and Cylon Raider moved too similarly in the narrow confines of the 1970’s tv screen. And were harder to differentiate. Tag back then could not provide visual depth the way cinema could. It was very hard to give a feeling of front to back motion. Moving towards or away from the viewer. So the tv effects guys had developed a few tricks. The best known being that distinct rotate and dive attack of the cylon raiders. The problem was the Starfighter also could only move like that. So they switched to what we know as the Viper. With its triangular profile. For Buck Rogers they reversed it. The good guys got the flat ship and the bad guys the triangle profile. The Draconian Marauder moves like the Colonial Viper onscreen.
    Later SF TV shows would expand on these visual tricks. For Example you may notice that toys and models of Star Treks Enterprise-D and Voyager never look quite right in hand. The nacelles always seem smaller then you think they should be, and the D’s saucer seems less round. It’s because the models were designed with a forced perspective in mind. The model is built to give the illusion of depth and front to back motion on screen. So stuff copied from the filming models doesn’t look quite right in the real world.

    • @thelittlethings3309
      @thelittlethings3309  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's awesome! I never noticed that about the Vipers and the Buck Rogers Starfighters, but now that you pointed it out, it is really noticeable. Also, that sure seems true about the "real world" models of the Enterprise. I had mentioned that a couple of times around some friends, but everyone always just shrugged their shoulders. Me included. Great information, thanks for the comment.

    • @andrewtaylor940

      @@citypicker4449 Only very broadly in some of its lines and shaping. They were both designed for a similar problem. Showing movement in space on a TV screen which had next to no real ability to portray depth or true front to rear motion.
      I don't remember if any of Dave Edding's crew from Century 21 ended up crossing over into the earliest days of ILM post Star Wars, where they designed Galactica and the Vipers?

    Loved the Star Trek Motion Picture figures when they came out.. the film was a huge deal for me as I was 9 and grew up with BBC repeats of the original series. I think I ended up customising some of them to be Dan Dare figures when i was around 12.. Decker became Dare and I used an old Micronaut to be the base for the Mekon. The Buck rogers figures were great, but not widely available in the UK.. I had Buck and Twiki. They were really great to crossover with the Black Hole figures, I only remember having Anthony Perkins' character from that line.. who also got heavily customised at some point. I would have killed to get those Flash Gordon figures, and now very likely to try and hunt some of them down!

    I haven’t watched the next installments yet, but I’m surprised you left out one important Star Trek The Motion Picture toy that REALLY fits the description of “white plastic”; the Milton Bradley South Bend Electronic Star Trek U.S.S.Enterprise.
    Based on the refit ship from the movie, not only did it feature the same electronic sounds as the Milton Bradley Star Bird toy ( without the motion controlled sound pitch ability, unfortunately ), but the snap together ship could be disassembled and reassembled into different starship designs, via ports built into the hull and snap tabs on various components. A unique play feature that has yet to be reintroduced on any other Trek toy.

    The lack of toys for Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan was one massive blunder. Here you had a killer movie, that’s still the standard that all other Trek films were compared … and hardly any toy production until decades later.

    • @thelittlethings3309
      @thelittlethings3309  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree. I was too young to enjoy the first Star Trek film, but I loved Wrath of Khan. It had all the action and space battles I was craving at the time. I used toys left over from the first film that I found on discount to play with (with the addition of Star Wars weapons) but it really wasn't the same. Star Trek 2 was a great gateway film for youngins who were getting into the Sci Fi craze and they should have exploited it more. Thanks for the comment.

    yes, but the BSG Toys are how I personally play with toys. I have no room for full sized vehicles, so i prefer smaller scaled. In my theater of mind, they would go to the hanger, and poof, change camera angle

    • @thelittlethings3309

      I can definitely see that. Sort of having some Hotwheels or Matchbox size vehicles and pretending that the figures board those ships. I think I did that quite a bit too. It was situational, and you can't hold back a kid's imagination with details like size differences!

      I have had several people mention both the show and the toys for Space 1999. I was not really aware of it when I made this, but I am now. It certainly should have been included in this, as it is a great example from that era. I am thinking about creating an addendum to this, and I will definitely include it in that. It needs some representation! Thanks for mentioning this.

    It’s important to remember that Star Wars itself borrows heavily from the Sci-Fi that predated it. George Lucas is quoted as saying there would be no Star Wars were it not for Star Trek. Ironically both those franchises are intertwined across the decades time and again after 1977, but that is a story for another time.

    • @thelittlethings3309
      @thelittlethings3309  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Definitely. There would be no Star Wars if not for Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers too. It is interesting to me to see how the franchises developed, evolved, borrowed from each other, and competed with each other through time. The late 1970s and early 1980s is just a small (but important) part of the Sci Fi story. And lots of great toys! Thanks for the comment!

    I also had the Tron handheld electronic game. I recall it being fun.
    I had a buddy that owned a Bigtrak. I was quite jealous of him and sad I never got one. I think it was a pretty pricey toy so that was likely the reason I never got one for Christmas or my birthday.

      Starcom was a bit later than the time period I was focusing on for this series. I want to do a follow-up for some of the mid to late 80s Sci Fi lines, such as Air Raiders, Brave Starr, and very much Starcom. It was a really good toy line that harkened back to the older "Star Wars and Star Trek" aesthetic (and had great gimmicks too). I do briefly show some at the very end of Part 3. Thanks for the comment!

    This video focuses on franchise branded lines (haven't examined your other videos). I was the target audience for this stuff at the time and if concurrent to Star Wars was the Micronauts toys which were quite honestly a great line of action figure toys to play with.

    • @thelittlethings3309

    Loved the Flash Gordon cartoon each saturday, the Gold Key/Whitman comics and the 3 3/4 figure line. But I still can't believe that they never gave us those golden robot soldiers of Ming; with troop builders like those they'd have made as much money on them as on all the other characters combined. Here's to hoping that Super 7 or someone right that wrong someday.

Most people think of the later Flash Gordon and the Defenders of the Earth line when the name comes up. I guess NECA re-made some of these in 2021 and I also saw some references to a Mego Line from way back in the day. Some interesting stuff. Thanks for watching.

    Battlestar Galactica - I was disappointed with the toys. I still have two Cylon figures (the plastic has started turning sticky in spots and the chrome plating is worn off in a few spots), and an Ovion, but I never got any of the others. I disliked that the ships used such small figures, so I never had any of them. I also disliked the larger figures because they looked weird. The Cylon in particular was pretty inaccurate, especially compared to the much nicer smaller version. BTW, in the 90s or maybe early 2000s I recall seeing a new line of figures based on the show. I called it the Steroid Edition because all the figures had massive shoulders, tiny waists and were bow-legged. They looked like they used He-Man as a model. I didn't have the desire to own any of them.
    The Black Hole - I wanted the robot figures, but never saw them in stores and never did get them. :(
    14:16 - I had the Hovercraft from that ad (#5). You plugged the hovercraft into the base and it would charge the battery in the ship. I think you turned the cap at the top of the ship to turn the fan on/off, and I one of the buttons on the base acted as a launcher. It was pretty fun until something went wrong with it and it stopped working. It might even still be in my attic somewhere.

      I didn't know about those 1990s Battlestar Galactica figs. Muscling up those 1970s actors for the toys was all the rage at the time, just like that Kenner Power of the Force 1990s line. Luke was going to body slam Vader and give him the chair. That hovercraft toy is another great example of the aesthetic from this series subject time period and I should have included it. I never owned it or anyone who did, but it sure looks great. Thanks for watching!

      It took me months and thousands of dollars to set up a complicated system of cups connected by strings to create the audio magic that is represented in these high budget video docu-dramas. No expense was spared. All part of the magic. But that is why I get paid the big bucks. Anyway, the term "Based Off" is Moche Peruvian phrase that designates when an old Science Fiction Toy is given particular weight or meaning in a specific cultural context, such as You Tube videos or High Palatial Sun Ceremonies. I wanted some gravitas, y'all. So just hit the "like" button already! This is my retirement plan. You get what you pay for.
