Godzilla Toys of the 1970s and 1980s
While there are may that believe that the late 1970s and early 1980s were a dead spot in terms of interest for classic Kaiju films, Toho’s most famous monster, Godzilla and other Giant Monster or Kaiju films were still a common sight on local television stations, both late at night and on lazy Saturday afternoons. During this time, Godzilla and his monster kin were finding their way into popular media of all sorts. Godzilla himself briefly joined the Marvel comics universe and became the star of a Hanna Barbera cartoon that was popular on Saturday mornings. Being a kid at this time, it felt like interest in Godzilla was gaining momentum, not faltering, and this led to some of the best and most interesting Godzilla toys ever made. Toys such as Shogun Warriors Godzilla, HG Toys Godzilla vs. the Tricephalon, GLJ's Bendy Godzilla, and Mattel's Godzilla's Gang. With new Kaiju films recently hitting the screen regularly both here and in Japan, I can’t help but think back about a time when Godzilla was really being introduced to kids in the United States and the products were plentiful.

Giant toy monsters have been around a long time, but we have never seen a time in which the the giant monster toy was so prolific as the late 1970s and early 1980s. As soon as Godzilla was released to the Shogun Warriors toy line, a parade of other giant monster toys, including Rodan, Gregory the Vampire Bat, Krusher, Suckerman, and many more were introduced to toy shelves and to the delight of...

In this episode of The Little Things, we explore the wild and animalistic toy lines of the high kingdoms period of toy history. By the mid-1980s the Barbarian craze was starting to fade and the Sword and Sorcery and Fantasy toy lines were starting to evolve to highly favor the Beast-Men aesthetic. This was a trait that was present at the beginning of the 1980s fantasy toy craze, but certainly w...

      It took me months and thousands of dollars to set up a complicated system of cups connected by strings to create the audio magic that is represented in these high budget video docu-dramas. No expense was spared. All part of the magic. But that is why I get paid the big bucks. Anyway, the term "Based Off" is Moche Peruvian phrase that designates when an old Science Fiction Toy is given particular weight or meaning in a specific cultural context, such as You Tube videos or High Palatial Sun Ceremonies. I wanted some gravitas, y'all. So just hit the "like" button already! This is my retirement plan. You get what you pay for.

    Oh one more comment as TH-cam decides to feed this to me again. The weird thing about Star Wars is it didn't just come out of nowhere. It hit into a market that was already buzzing for something just like it. The pump had already been primed. In the mid to late 70's the routine "Action Figures" of the day like Big Jim, Action Jackson and the somewhat defanged "Action Team" version of GI Joe weren't cutting it.We had been fed for years on Planet of the Apes and Star Trek reruns and Mego's wonderful toys. The week day after school movies tended to run a lot of old 50's US SciFi and newer Japanese SciFi and Kaiju. There was a momentum building. A Craving. Look at the first US wave of Micronauts. 1976! Look in the Catalog and notice how much that first wave seemed to be pulling from those same design concepts we see in Star Wars and the later toys. Wee see those white plastic wedge shaped spaceships. The robots. The armored bad guy. (No Baron Karza was not a Darth Vader rip off. He was Kotetsu Jeeg with a bootleg Mazinger Z head sculpt that somebody cut the crown off and reversed it).

    I think you plays way too much emphasis on Star Wars influence on everything. There is no doubt the role that Star Wars had to play and enabling all of this to happen and the direct inspiration in many cases, however there was already a trend happening something that you acknowledge yourself. There was already live action science fiction on Saturday mornings as well as many of inspired cartoons on Saturday mornings. This whole Trend was a process not a product. The stage was already set. I think it is fair to say that the widespread distribution of Star Trek in television syndication warmed up the audience for the arrival of Star Wars and the subsequent tsunami of Science Fiction media and product tie-ins. It's highly possible that Lucas was aware of this science fiction toy trend already happening and it's probably one of the reasons why he set up the deal for percentage of product tie in sales.

    • @thelittlethings3309
      @thelittlethings3309 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I totally agree with you. I really do think that there was a lot of momentum building up to the Sci Fi craze. I think that the release of Star Wars was a big turning point for the overall look and feel, the general aesthetic, for Sci Fi from that point forward, but especially during this time period. Things like Micronauts helped build the momentum and was extremely important, but the "McQuarrie" look really took off afterward. But I think you hit the nail on the head and Sci Fi was already on the minds of the public and Star Wars was a spark to the gunpowder. I really want to find time to talk about Sci Fi toys in the years before Star Wars, because I think it is really interesting to folks that are into "Sci Fi history." Good point and thanks for the comment.

    I had a Big Trak, which I think was difficult for my parents (I mean Santa Claus) to afford... I was delighted, for about 45 minutes, before figuring out how limited it was, and it was loud enough that my folks didn't want it near them at all. Other than chasing my cat, (who just ran down the stairs) it was a great toy that I never warmed up to...
