Godzilla Toys of the 1970s and 1980s
While there are may that believe that the late 1970s and early 1980s were a dead spot in terms of interest for classic Kaiju films, Toho’s most famous monster, Godzilla and other Giant Monster or Kaiju films were still a common sight on local television stations, both late at night and on lazy Saturday afternoons. During this time, Godzilla and his monster kin were finding their way into popular media of all sorts. Godzilla himself briefly joined the Marvel comics universe and became the star of a Hanna Barbera cartoon that was popular on Saturday mornings. Being a kid at this time, it felt like interest in Godzilla was gaining momentum, not faltering, and this led to some of the best and most interesting Godzilla toys ever made. Toys such as Shogun Warriors Godzilla, HG Toys Godzilla vs. the Tricephalon, GLJ's Bendy Godzilla, and Mattel's Godzilla's Gang. With new Kaiju films recently hitting the screen regularly both here and in Japan, I can’t help but think back about a time when Godzilla was really being introduced to kids in the United States and the products were plentiful.

GIANT Toy Monsters of the Late 1970s and Early 1980s: Godzilla, Rodan, Terron, Gregory, Krusher, etc
มุมมอง 9K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
Giant toy monsters have been around a long time, but we have never seen a time in which the the giant monster toy was so prolific as the late 1970s and early 1980s. As soon as Godzilla was released to the Shogun Warriors toy line, a parade of other giant monster toys, including Rodan, Gregory the Vampire Bat, Krusher, Suckerman, and many more were introduced to toy shelves and to the delight of...

In this episode of The Little Things, we explore the wild and animalistic toy lines of the high kingdoms period of toy history. By the mid-1980s the Barbarian craze was starting to fade and the Sword and Sorcery and Fantasy toy lines were starting to evolve to highly favor the Beast-Men aesthetic. This was a trait that was present at the beginning of the 1980s fantasy toy craze, but certainly w...

Flash Gordon, BSG and Mork all used the same basic body. Also BSG had three more vehicles in the smaller scale with pilots - the car like Scarab, the Stellar Probe (which is a souped up viper) and the extremely rare Land Ram. FWI you can get 3 3;/4" scale versions of all these vehicles and more done by small creators now.

I'm 48 years old, and I'm not going to lie. That Sears Wish Book was THE BOMB! Coming home from school just to find it in the mailbox (or sitting on the doorstep because the gosh darn thing was too big to fit inside the mailbox), looking through it, and marking off my Christmas wishes in it was always so exciting! I tell you; kids today don't have a clue what they're missing! Online shopping just isn't the same as flipping through the pages and checking off the toys you wanted!

Loved Buck Rogers, would've bought the toys, but they were poorly constructed and the figures had no guns and there weren't a variety of them. That was a great series with a lot of cool characters and there were no figures of them. I like the plot to kill a city episode, but we didn't get the legion of death figures. I still hope some toy company will do a retreatment of this series, but doubt it.

Great video series. The Starriors and Robotix lines, which make brief cameos at the end of the video as examples of post-Transformers-era sci-fi toys, still feel aesthetically grounded in Star Wars to me. Robotix in particular is the Jawa Droid Factory but bigger, motorized, and a whole extensive toy line unto itself.

I think a lot about how important Star Wars toys were to my and my brother's childhoods. It wasn't Christmas in the 80's unless Kenner was under the tree. I think about how significant SW was to cinema and culture, but I wonder now... How much of Star Wars impact on culture was related to the advent of cheap foreign plastic products, easily made and marketed to Boomers with the little extra income to indulge their boys... Yes, I said boys. Dont tell me girls had any interest in any of this. Boys and their Toys. Great book title

Since I watched Buster Crabbe's Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon on KTLA channel 5 in LA, I knew these characters well. I have the Saturday morning Flash Gordon animation DVDs. They animation was VERY well made. The live action "disco" flash gordon and twiki rogers made me very ... sad, so I had no interest in their toys. *Sigh*, maybe I was already a jaded Star Wars snob, or getting too old for these toys. The TRON video arcade game was visually cool, but hard to play for me.

What I love about the Star Bird Avenger is that it also echos the Pontiac Firebird Trans Am hood livery. Perfection! I still have and love my Rascal Robot. I also got a Big Trak when my Dad guilt-forgot my birthday. HOWEVER, I also felt bad about guilt-gifting and returned it. Stupid Conscious. Damn you crime and punishment! I still have my Space Raiders erasers. I melted mine with a match to look damaged. If you stick wires in their arms and legs you can articulate them. The "brainiac" in the top left reminded me of the "This Island Earth" drone monster.

Fun fact: 18:17 The Land Speed Racer (note “speed” and not “speeder”) is not a sci-fi vehicle at all, which is why it was part of the Adventure series and not the Space series, and why the “pilot” is a race-car driver instead of an astronaut. It’s based on real-world jet- or rocket-powered land vehicles designed and built specifically for setting land speed (hence the name) records, usually in places like the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. _That said,_ i’m pretty sure most kids still used it for space dogfights with the Firestar-1, and that’s cool too 😄

The green robot eraser is very clearly based on Getter Robo, and the ships, especially the orange one, reminded me of early 30s Buck ROgers ships, the rivets in them suggested old time or retro style.
