Correction: Air Senegal is not the only A330-900 operator in Africa. Mauritius is in the African continent and it's flag carrier, Air Mauritius does operate them mostly to my home airport, Johannesburg as well. Fun fact: Air Mauritius was the first African A330neo operator

    • @JoshCahill
      @JoshCahill  2 ปีที่แล้ว +135

Its true and I have been on that plane. In fact Air Mauritius A330neo was my first ever flight on that type. Somehow I always forget that the beautiful Island of Mauritius is part of Africa. Thanks for pointing it out!

As a Senegalese myself, thank you for your honest review. Be assured, a lot of critics and clashes on Air Senegal's performance are being expressed in Senegalese forums, hopefully it'll help things improve for the benefit of travelers. As some mentioned here, a transparent recruitment and a professional management are critical if we don't want to see this airline disappear.

Regarding the cabin crew behaviour, i just want to add that I worked for airlines in Africa as Ground Staff before my QR journey and the hard truth about **some of them is that the cabin crew are the relatives of someone who has a high status in the airline or someone in Politics and they are "untouchable" if you complain about them. Thats why they dont care with the service. I heard this several times. So Josh.... like you say it... they just work as a cabin crew in order to be able to take selfies in different countries.

Gosh, that's terrible but confirms what I've always suspected and seen, first-hand, with regards to poor performing, lazy, even aggro employees everywhere. They weren't hired off the street, but got 'gifted' the job by someone already working there. It's so hard (and often depressing) to find a job when you don't have connections, even if you're skilled and easy to deal with but esp. if you have little experience. Then all these people are given opportunities and they don't realise how privileged they are... Frustrating!

@JoshCahill. When flying Economy, after take-off, my trick is always to move my backpack from underneath the seat in front to below my knee area....that way I can reclaim the space in front to fully stretch my legs while still having access to everything I want in my backpack. Depending on the seating, I will sometimes lay the backpack on its side so that it doesn't rub directly underneath my knee area...or sometimes I keep it upright to provide a bit of extra support for my legs...depends...but either way, this trick opens up the area underneath the seat in front to stretch your legs out.
Of course this is a solution when the seat next to you is occupied...otherwise, of course, I'll just put my backpack underneath that empty space, if it's not already been claimed by any other passenger in the row:)

I worked in the Peace Corps in Mauritania, 1978-80. Going to Dakar, the Big City was a big treat for us in Nouakchott. I really loved Senegal. The people were so friendly and eager to assist us. We also liked St Louis, and visiting the other volunteers down on the river. I remember swimming in the river with friends. Back then the custom was for women to cover their legs/ankles with a long skirt, but no covering of the breasts was needed. I swam and floated in the Senegal river in just my skirt and enjoyed myself. The best part was when I stayed with a Senegalese family, helping out and enjoying family time. I met large aand loving families. ❤

From London and go to Senegal often, have a stake in family friends business there, Air Senegal have planned to offer a direct flight which will entice me as i will longer need to do long layovers in Brussels or Madrid every time. This video scares me a bit. Wonder what they're like in the premium cabins. Prices on the route are always expensive in business especially on this route so worth to see if it is in any way justifiable.

The whole "crew was offended to work" mentality is the worst. I was on a small regional jet for a domestic US flight and the two cabin staff members did the safety demonstration and then didn't bother coming out. I went to ask for some coffee, and the behavior was like me asking something was personally offending them.

Dear Josh I am sorry about the poor service of the cabin crew, naturally Senegalese are very fun filled people, their negative attitude boils down to how they were recruited and trained, such crew are often employed by connections and not by passion
Anyway Dakar is such a beautiful city with a lot of interesting places to visit, how I wished you lodged at the King Fahd presidential palace hotel Dakar, you would have enjoyed the best of the beaches and a lovely visit to the slave port island at Goree

    • @Tony31669
      @Tony31669 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

King Fahd hotel is dated and leaves a bit to be desired. It was once the pinnacle but no longer. The area, Les Almadies, is still very nice though. There are several nice hotels which will cost about $120/night and less in Almadies: La Residence, Yaas, and L'Adresse. They are all very decent. Yaas is more of a business travelers hotel with small rooms but clean and all amenities needed for a short stay. La Residence is more of a private boutique hotel with several rooms and is located about a 200 yards from the ocean front. L'Adresse is new and owned by the same French owners of La Residence. L'Addresse is a full fledged modern hotel. There are many smaller hotels and air B&B's in Almadies and surrounding areas. Nice restaurants and coffee shops as well.

Hi Josh, loved watching your review as I had just flown Air Senegal on the same aircraft and route just 2 weeks ago, so was eager to see your experience. Like you I also loved the hardware, the brand new A339, really nice interiors and great IFE.
You should have chosen the fish meal, it was amazingly delicious, white fish with a creamy coconut sauce, I'd fly HC just to have that meal again. I found the chicken didn't look so good, maybe it tasted ok. In regard to the drinks service on my flight they did one before the main meal and one after.
I found the crew to be ok and to standard, the guy serving my aisle was very polite in fact, maybe a bit of French speaking helps.
The toilet situation on my flight was even worse, there was no water coming from the taps in 3 of 4 toilets that I tried, instead they put a big bottle of water in the sink! Of course the toilets were not kept tidy either. That was the biggest shock and let down on an otherwise very good flight.

Crew hiring isn´t just looking of candidate papers and outlooks - and when crew doesn´t perform their tasks, its always management issue. Simply its not just laziness of cabin crew, I think its telling something about company in general, and how it works - or more about competence, working morale, doing your duties, what ever your position is in company.

When the cabin crew member said " What do you want" I don't think she meant any harm really. Senegalese people naturally speak French and many do communicate in basic English which I think it's enough. However, if she said those words in French that would be totally different and we would all agree that she would be having a bad attitude. In my humble opinion, I am very sure that she was just trying to find out how she could assist you... Otherwise please take it easy Josh Cahill. Question Josh, you came out of an Ibis this time, you have preference for any brand or group, or are you location and or rate driven ? Besides the African airb&b choices ?
Some weirdo's can be nice ! Lol they may look at you Josh and think "OMG a vlogger!" hehehe

Your opening comments on 'Africa rising' are very appropriate and spot on. 👍🏽 Look at what's happening in Europe, hope your Grandmother in Ukraine is ok.

13:18 is that * half * a sandwich, with only ham inside? On brown bread (* shudders *)? Air Senegal is being *very* pre-emptive on the wheat shortage from the war in Ukraine...
I hope your grandmother in Ukraine is OK. Pity the crew were so lazy, makes you feel so uncomfortable as a customer.

      I "noticed" that too...(ugh)!
Dry, (unbuttered) bread with a single slice of ham ! (Not even ham & cheese).
How cheap can you get ?
(I'd much! rather just have a packet of peanuts or something such)

Simply Aviation also did a review on Air Senegal from Paris to Dakar 3 years ago on the Airbus A330-900neo, so this airbus on Air Senegal is actually not new, same with the cabin, anyways,Great Review!

Yes, being in a war-torn country is sobering. I was in Egypt and Israel in the early 80s. Also grew up listening to Mom's stories of the war years in England.

Am very surprised that you stopped doing ethiopian airlines from the first experience its very sad you didn't even give them another chance they were serving Africa for years and they are doing great
Do another video please on ethiopian airlines 🇪🇹

12:00…. So true. You watch the hot people pass you by as you hope your seat mate won’t be a disappointment. They need to have a system whereby you pick your seat based on passengers photos at the time of booking. Sort of a “Gate Grindr” 😈

Having lived in Senegal I can tell you this type of attitude typical for these kind of jobs. They get these jobs not because of a great work attitude but because they know someone. It is also not unusual for well-connected people to fly friends and girlfriends in business class for free. That’s probably why the plane was packed.

I am also half Ukrainian Josh and I am watching this whole shit show unfold with horror from Australia. I know my relatives who escaped there after WW2 are also watching with horror as well Fortunately most of my relatives that are still there are safe for now. I think it is really important that you and other travel TH-camrs talk about it. People, especially the next generation need to know that what is going on is not ok nor should be accepted as normal.

If you sit in economy class sometimes there'll be someone next to you who has to spread out. As a woman, I've had to be tensed up in a corner the whole flight to avoid a strange man's thigh touching me. So rude and uncomfortable.

Air Senegal were supposed to start flights from Dakar to London Stansted in 2020, using an A321 NEO, but alas Covid put a spanner in everything.

That bathroom is just so nasty and unsanitary. I hope this gets up to their corporate office to see. Just awful.
