    What do fashion illustrators do?

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  7 ปีที่แล้ว +142

      They can be involved in all sorts of segments of the industry. Illustrators can help create concept boards or flesh out the designs, especially for private label clients. Illustrators can also be hired to do promo images for ads, for lookbooks, to add to websites for all different kinds of companies. Some also have technical skills and get hired to do flats. Some will clean up rough sketches so they can be digitized for beading or embroidery work. I've done all these things. I've also done large scale drawings to hang inside fashion boutiques. I did an illustration for a fashion school for their promotional materials once. (This is why it's especially embarrassing I forgot about illustrators until I sat down to edit.)

      A Fashion Illustrator creates clothing designs by hand or with computer programs. When you're a Fashion Illustrator, your drawings are usually the first things that Fashion Stylists and Fashion Buyers will look at in order to make decisions for their clients. They are also used for ads and sales for the fashion house.

      i’m 16 and i have no idea what i’m gonna do with my life.. i just know the general direction i want it to go. i know exactly how you feel and trust me you have so long time to figure it out. there is a lot of pressure because it’s something you’re going to do for the rest of your life and not only do you need to survive with the amount of money you make, you also need to love your job. and i think that students have to make this decision so early on in their life but you will get through it

    A very important video and a great rebuttal to people who write fashion off as this vacuous industry when there’s a small army of extremely talented people across primary, secondary and tertiary sectors of the global economy maintaining the machine that creates everything from t-shirts to haute couture gowns

      People love to complain about how they can't find the right things to wear. Well, if people didn't care about clothes or fashion as much they like to say they don't, then why would it matter if their clothes weren't perfect? People care way more than they like to admit. I hate it when people say things like, "I don't care about clothes so I only wear this this and this." No, if you really didn't care, if you were truly "above thinking about such shallow concerns" then you would truly wear whatever.

    Funny how I just watched this video for the first time tonight, August 2, 2020 and although it is still super relevant I can't ignore that the whole world has changed and from this point on it will change some more. For one we don't know what direction fashion Shows will take. Anyway, thank you so much for making this video because there are so many avenues that are connected to the fashion World that unless you know you don't know, that you don't know they excist. We are so fortunate to have someone of your level of knowledge Ms. Zoe Hong shinning light on so many subjects in the Fashion World through your wonderful channel!

    I use to be a technical designer for 3 years before going into tech
    long story short : It was not for me.
    my task was to
    -make technical sketch
    -Do the BOM on excel
    -chose labdip
    -make strike off (all over print)
    -communicate with manufacturer oversea
    -request first proto sample as well as fabric and trims
    and after that it was the fit tech job

    Heyyy Zoe!! I recently came across your channel and I've learned so many things about fashion in such a short time! I was considering studying architecture but I believe that fashion is more hands-on and appropriate for me as a career. I feel such fulfilment when I make things with my hands. I've sewn 4 collections for my barbie dolls when I was 10 (I'm 17 and a half now) and I know knit. My parents are not really happy with that idea of mine and believe that I wont make enough for the living I want if I pursue fashion. This dilemma of mine is driving me crazy and don't know what to do. I loooove haute couture but I'm not sure if ill ever be able to find a job as a fashion designer in high fashion and cant decide what to do because my biggest fear is being unemployed 😂. Lots of love from Greece 💕💕

    I wanted to become a fashion designer, but right before I was able to apply to FIDM in 2014, I had a terrible accident and now have nerve damage, and my hands constantly shake now. I wanted to go into the bridal or lingerie industry. I never stopped designing but my sketches are messy and when I try to make mockups of my pieces, I have an issue where I can't keep my hands steady. Thank you for this diagram video of the whole fashion industry. This has helped me a lot. I graduated with my BA in fashion studies and was thinking of going into merchandising because I only thought of retail. Now, with all this information, I can see that I am geared towards marketing and fashion show production. I was also thinking of applying to FIT for their 1-year AAS fashion business management program to supplement my BA. My BA consisted more of fashion history + cultures and an overview of the fashion industry (manufacturing, production) in general, not specializing in merchandising or design, like most program do. So with this AAS from FIT, I will not only have business knowledge but also a fashion school name brand that will help with networking. What is your opinion, Zoe?

    • @zoehongteaches

      Fashion basically needs to do better in every single category. We produce more waste than almost any other industry in the world. We need some kind of Fashion U.N. to track, highlight, and punish unethical factories.

    Hi Zoe! I really love your videos and they’ve been helping me a lot recently. Except, I’ve been wanting to take classes for fashion designing before I finish high school. I’m 14 at the moment and I was wondering how long it would usually take to learn at least the basics. Also, if I want to take fashion in college, what would it require? What if I don’t know a thing about fashion? Would I still be able to get into such universities or colleges?
    (Lol sorry for asking about so much, I’m just slightly worried because I have 4 years to figure things out, and it doesn’t seem like that’s enough time to me 😭)

    Hi Zoe, I really appreciate all your videos on fashion, they're really helpful!
    I wanted to ask for your advice...if I don't know my place in fashion, what do I do? After watching your "Is Fashion Worth It?" video, I couldn't see myself being a designer, but I still want a career in fashion. Thing is, I seriously have NO CLUE of what aspect in the industry to pursue. I don't know where my skills lie. I love the visual aspects of it and piecing together outfits, but I can't put a label or stick a major to it...so i don't know WHAT to study.. It makes me doubt my decision to go into fashion in the first place. I'm applying to Parsons, Pratt, and F.I.T in the next month. Also RISD (in case I just do graphic design..(I heard it's more flexible in attaining jobs)) I'm just scared I would pick a wrong major and waste 300k. Would love to hear your feedback, and thank you in advance!

      Sounds like you'd enjoy studying fashion merchandising, styling, or visual merchandising. You should research those majors.

    What does marker maker do? Oh no! I've just googled it and found on fashion-incubator. This person optimalyses layout of the garment pieces for industrial cutter machine. Can I say it is the role traditional cutter used to do? But maybe cutter is the person, who makes patterns and then cut those pieces?

    • @michalinkazofia
      @michalinkazofia 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Could you make a video about more tradional model. You know, about what it used to be when men wear suits at work. :P

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The cutter unrolls the fabric, lays the marker on top, and cuts.

    • @michalinkazofia
      @michalinkazofia 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! I see some language differences, cause in polish everything design related is design and other stuff after is cutting.

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      People talk about cutting in different ways but a cutter cuts. Marker makers make markers. Sometimes companies offer both services but they are totally different jobs.

    Hey Zoe! I'm a really big fan of you since you started making your youtube videos, but I'm always kind of shy to write something to you. I'm unfortunately going through a bad phase in my designer life and I would love to ask you for some little advice. I don't want to bother you writing an e-mail, but maybe you could answer me quickly and this might me a problem for others as well... Would appreciate!
    My passion has always been drawing- Specially fashion drawing. I even made 2 courses on that in the past and that's really my thing. I learned alone fashion history and some technical aspects of the clothing making process. I also did a internship in a woman's fashion brand to learn a litte bit of pattern making and putting up a collection together. I am 19 years old, and since 6 I wanted to become a fashion designer. I sadly, never had the opportunity to learn how to sew properly. I always could repair bits here and there and work very little with the machine. I don't get accepted here in Berlin to study fashion design because the only school that is not private lays a lot on the sewing talent- Thing that I don't have. I applied last year and got refused. My project execution was really very simple, but thats what I can when it comes to sewing. People keep pressing me to study Arts because I'm not a clothing maker, but an Illustrator instead.... But I don't want it. I want to be accepted in this University here in Berlin, I just don't know how :( They really just evaluate your construction skills. I got really sad this year 2017 about it... Maybe you could give me some advice. I am here waiting to try again next year for the same school, because the others are private and I can't afford it.
    Thanks a lot!
    Ariel

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Take a construction class and apply again. The university can't be the only place in a huge city like Berlin that teaches sewing. Good luck!

    What do product developers do? Is there another name for it?

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      product development associates, technical designers, they are the bridge between designers and production. They take a design and specify every measurement, every trim that goes into it, tracks initial sample making, etc.

      Zoe Hong I ask because I would like to major in fashion business management at FIT and saw that production development could be a potential job with the degree. I watched a video about Macy’s product development program and was intrigued but slightly confused. So I don’t have to major in design to do it? And when searching for kinds in Indeed what should I type in fashion production assisntant?

    What’s the difference between a pattern maker and a production pattern maker?

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      First patterns are about getting the designer's concept accurate. Production patternmakers make small changes to make the production of the design more efficient, save fabric, make better markers, etc.

    I am currently doing year 10 at school and want to be a fashion designer, cutting, draping , tailoring , sewing - would this just be a fashion designer or like something else? Or is this a seamstress ?

    • @zoehongteaches
      @zoehongteaches  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you want to cut, drape, tailor, sew, you can become a cutter, a sample sewer, you can do alterations, you do custom tailoring or dressmaking.
