Not gonna lie, I find the argument of 'oh if they use kittens it'll be treated as too much of a cutsie kids game and not be taken seriously' to be incredibly assenine given how silly and cartoonish KSP has been from the very start, its the very heart of the charm of KSP. I understand having a preference for something a bit more unique, but ultimately kerbals are just frog people, so why isn't cat people an equally adequate option given they thematically are obscessed with causing chaos and getting to the highest point they possibly can. Yes just straight cats with nothing else creative to them is limiting in terms of brand identity, I'll recognise that, but there's still quite a bit you can do with the concept. The Betelgeusians from Space Dandy are a great example of how you can make things unique and characterful while still taking the base idea of 'Cat'.
i think the main difference is, yes, kerbal space program has been "cutsie" and charming in that same kind of way, but it doesnt necessarily READ that way when you're just browsing through steam and see "KERBAL SPACE PROGRAM" its intruiging enough to at least click on at which point, regardless of how cutsie it looks, it has its physics on display and will hook anyone interested in that kind of thing. i think what matt was saying with KSA is that people wont even give it a second glance, they'll see "Kitten space agency" whilst browsing on steam and just write it off as a kids game and not even probe any further.
Yeah or Palicoes from Monster Hunter. Just not straight-up "kittens" or "cats" was my point, people will see that as the primary draw of the game, not the Space bit. KSP worked because Kerbals weren't a thing to begin with, and aesthetically they fit with the idea of it being a space-game first (they were literally "little green men")
Agreed. And people forget the KSA is a working title and the final game may not even have cats. It's still in early stages and everything is subject to change.
unironically yes, people already dismiss KSP as being too goofy and childish, it doesn't really matter who's in the capsules as long as they make good thumbnails
Kittens presenting a childish assumption isn’t a concern… someone new looking at Kerbals would come away with the same assumptions. The bigger problem is that nobody likes putting kittens into trouble while Kerbals are perfectly fine with it.
Didn't they say they wanted there to be more incentive to keeping your astronauts alive though? Kittens fit PERFECTLY with that idea. That desperate desire to keep the cute fluffy creature alive means that when a landing on the moon goes a bit... funky. You are going to much more invested in actually going back and getting those poor wittle kitties home!
Exact same feelings about Kitten Space Agency, also wtf are we meant to think when our "Kittens" burn up in the atmosphere because we didn't put enough abalator on the ship. Not good. Kerbals dying was already rough enough.
Those are pretty consistent with each other compared to "join if you want to enjoy the full benefits of membership" which would be mostly marketing bs.
The kitten thing about KSA doesn’t bother me, what does bother me is that it seems that they’re going to be using our actual solar system. I (and most of us) already know our own solar system. We live here, we’ve explored it. What really brings me into KSP is the mystery of a fictional system. Why is Jool green, how does Laythe have surface water, etc. Fictional solar systems are just 100x more fun imo.
They are almost certainly not gonna use the real life solar system. They are only using the real solar system in the dev phase so they can cross check their simulation against a real world analogue. They said as much in a red dit post. I’m guessing they’ll have both a solar system and a fictional system on release, or at least real life solar system as a dlc. No point putting in all the work to just throw it away.
Im worried about KSP somehow, maybe its KSA, probably it would be a KSP rival, which would be good for both games, but im not pretty sure about it, i just know theres something saying "worry about this"
You should get into the habit of binding an action group to toggle your control surfaces on SSTOs, so they aren't wiggling about as you maneuver on orbit.
I agree with the "Don't use cats" opinion, KSP had charm because of the Kerbals. Seeing as "KSA" is only a placeholder name, I don't think they will actually use kittens. I do have high hopes for the game though, since its maintained by popular KSP modders and even HarvesteR.
Honestly, I think most of the reasons you listed for kittens not being a good idea apply to kerbals as well, they’re cutesy cartoony creatures and how would somebody know that Kerbal Space Program is a serious game at all and not just something trying to capitalize off of the Minions craze yk? I think kittens are a great idea, they have the cuteness appeal of Kerbals and the potential for great expressiveness
The whole reason Felipe decided on Kerbals is he didn't want to use a creature people would get attached too and be upset when it dies. But everyone I know who plays KSP, including myself, reloads the last quick save whenever his Kerbals die.

As someone who’s played rocketwerkz’s Stationeers, I was elated to hear they were making the spiritual successor to KSP. I highly recommended Stationeers.
I tried stationeers a couple weeks ago, the actual building mechanics, graphics, physics, and all that is great, but the UI and inventory management is god-awful. It can take like 3 times longer to do something than it should just because of the awful inventory and UI systems. That said, with their years of experience since then, this will likely be much better in KSA.
@@1mariomaniac I can definitely agree that the UI is a bit rough. I've adapted and can navigate it with ease, but it is definitely a far cry from a smooth and intuitive experience. I think the design choice is largely because of the level of complexity of Stationeers and the UI needs to support all that complexity. I quite look forward to seeing what the do in KSA!
@@1mariomaniacTo be fair, the game comes with a disclaimer that it's not really for casual building gameplay and is really more focused on extreme systems optimization and whatnot.
I agree Matt. The cats don't feel quite right. Having little aliens however also seems to close to ksp. What I think I'd want is just some cartoonishly proportioned humans or something.
I agree Kitten Space Agency is not the final name that I would like to see. Like kittens are cute and silly, but a derpy lil alien would probably be cooler, and get the point of "KSP clone, serious space sim, not taking itself too too seriously" across better
1000% agree with you regarding "Kitten Space Agency". I posted something the same on Reddit. Everything from kittens being too cute and misleading as a name to them being the lowest common denominator to ... everything. I didn't say it with all the detail that you did, but basically it is not possible for me to agree any more fully with anything than i agree with the opinion that Kittens (or any real animal) would be "not KSP" and entirely wrong.
Whatever company now owns the IP could perhaps then resell it for Kitten Space Agency, so Kitten Space Agency can be Kerbal Space Program 3. That way the new holders make some easy money, KSP won't be abandoned, and KSA will have market recognition.
You should do a series of new space games! I would love to see how you interpret sci fi space games like star citizen, elite dangerous, stellaris and such as one off videos.
The Kitten part was the coldest take I've ever seen. It's the complete opposite, adding cats has the potential to grow the community far beyond what Kerbal Space Program was capable of.
What would be the most ideal outcome, not like this will actually happen, would be if the people who bought KSP2 approached Rocket Works offering the KSP2 assets. Trash the code of KSP2 but use the models and textures for the game Rocket Works is working on.
Jeff Bezos has a history of purchasing IP specifically so that it can continue being made. He has a spade company, And the ip he purchased most recently was the expanse, a sci-fi show. Come on daddy Bezos.
Cats have always been a staple of the internet. I think if it was made in 2010, it would be a coin toss between cats and bacon, and not necessarily a win for bacon. I see nothing wrong with using them as the aliens for KSA. There's also the card game Exploding Kittens, which goes hand in hand with the theme of derpy spaceflight simulations, and the phrase "curiosity killed the cat" which also morbidly fits the genre. I think kittens are a perfect fit for the game, and if you go into the discord, there's a few spacesuit design ideas that really go quite well with the kitten theme. One I really liked had ear shaped lights on the helmet
The problem with finding a mascot for any KSP clone is that there are certain requirements. You want something anthropomorphic, it needs two legs and two arms to make sense with human-like capsules for explanation. You want something not human-like in colouring, because natural skin tones would be off-putting. You want an expressive, which means a relatively large head with huge eyes and a hige mouth. Basically, you want a Kerbal. Anything you choose will need to resemble a Kerbal. It can be blue or red or purple, but to KSP fans it's going to look like "Mum: we have Kerbals at home. The Kerbals at home:" I think kittens are pretty cheesy, but going for an anthropomorphic animal is probably the best way to avoid the looking like a cheap imitation. (But we all know penguins would be cooler)
Do we know for sure that the KSP IP went with Private Division? The press releases that I've found have been a bit vague on the subject. I mean, I'd prefer that it did, because PD will at least have more interest in doing something with it that T2 will...
You should cover the game Spaceflight Simulator. It’s a great game with a wonderful development history. The developer is also now working on Spaceflight Simulator 2 and it’s making the transition from flash 2D to basically what KSP was. I think it would be right up your alley and worth a look.
I don’t know anymore Matt. I’m hoping that KSA bought it secretly but, I know that’s a long shot. Kittens might be a bit much I agree. And I hope it’s just a prototype name for now. GIVE MATT ALL THE MONEY 😂
ksp 2 can be cured by the old dev team they know what there doing with it and they all probably would be more than happy to return they just need advertisement like kerbals showing up to a place that say's closed indefinently and breaking the sign and putting back in business sign up would go hard i mean after all cyberpunk 2077 was a horrific launch that then became good
It being kittens would definitely make me more likely to buy it. I haven’t been impressed with other KSP alternatives because they just don’t have the same charm that feels like a necessary part of the fun
i would assume KSA went with kittens as the placeholder because it starts with K and is a commonly known animal. but realistically i dont know if they would go with yet another alien race as the protagonists as it will surely seem to some like a ksp clone and not the spiritual successor, i feel an animal might actually fit that bill better. so whats a wacky, fun animal with potential cutesy appeal, yet from a place known for its chaos? kangaroos. kangaroo space agency. i rest my case.
1) i never believed take 2 was going to complete or release a game, so they didnt poison KSP to me 2) the acquisition is the best news i have heard in KSP 2 development in many years.

I would love to see how you interpret sci fi space games like star citizen, elite dangerous, stellaris and such as one off videos.
btw i love your planet coaster vids please make them
this cannot be real.. this ammount of trolling is outside range of detection
Finally. An administrator who appreciates that giant explosions are frigging sick.
He has a spade company,
And the ip he purchased most recently was the expanse, a sci-fi show.
Matt: I have integrity
Matt 5 seconds later: give me money
Comedy gold😂
I wouldn't get too excited about a tweet. Blockbuster still tweets from time. Props for the Bender quote from Futurama S1E2, too.
It would be funny if Elon bought ksp
ooh.... if it's no longer in Take-Two's hands, that means if it gets finished, i'll be buying it.
This is, indeed, good news.
i agree with you on the ksa naming
I completely and wholeheartedly agree with your take on kitten space agency. That’s a name I just can’t get behind.
Let me guess, it's the booster you're taking into orbit and the Shuttle will stay on suborbital? But It's not as ambitious so idk
The Kerbals at home:"
I think kittens are pretty cheesy, but going for an anthropomorphic animal is probably the best way to avoid the looking like a cheap imitation.
(But we all know penguins would be cooler)
Do we know for sure that the KSP IP went with Private Division? The press releases that I've found have been a bit vague on the subject. I mean, I'd prefer that it did, because PD will at least have more interest in doing something with it that T2 will...
"i have integrity"
one second later: "give me all of your money, i want your money"
What's happening is jeb got a good job in politics, be happy for him.
I have high hopes for Rocketwerkz. Their other game, Stationeers, is doing quite well and being updated often.
God... what a ridiculous decision to post that as a tweet after six months. Good thing I don't use Twitter anymore.
it's funny tho
Matt, what is your opinion on the in-development SFS 2? (Spaceflight Simulator 2)
ksp 2 can be cured by the old dev team they know what there doing with it and they all probably would be more than happy to return they just need advertisement like kerbals showing up to a place that say's closed indefinently and breaking the sign and putting back in business sign up would go hard i mean after all cyberpunk 2077 was a horrific launch that then became good
It being kittens would definitely make me more likely to buy it. I haven’t been impressed with other KSP alternatives because they just don’t have the same charm that feels like a necessary part of the fun
Most KSP players don't want KSP2
We want a massive mod colab that overhauls KSP in ways never thought before.
Elevating the game to another level
i hope KSP 2 will get better someone needs to make a real planets mod and a US probes mod that adds probes like voyager 1
i would assume KSA went with kittens as the placeholder because it starts with K and is a commonly known animal. but realistically i dont know if they would go with yet another alien race as the protagonists as it will surely seem to some like a ksp clone and not the spiritual successor, i feel an animal might actually fit that bill better. so whats a wacky, fun animal with potential cutesy appeal, yet from a place known for its chaos? kangaroos. kangaroo space agency. i rest my case.
4:27 that joke was so good lol
1) i never believed take 2 was going to complete or release a game, so they didnt poison KSP to me
2) the acquisition is the best news i have heard in KSP 2 development in many years.
Cool to hear your thoughts matt 👍
MATTT!!!1!! Hav yuo herd that KSP 2 is bought and will develop!1!2!! Opnion???
agree on the kittens point. Maybe I'm just too used to kerbals but, it just feels weird.
Blackrack has already posted some screenshots from his work in KSA, he already implemented scattering for the game.
How do you like the new Stratenblitz video.
will your space this week video be delayed until later in the day on monday so you can record a segment about the results of starship ift 6 or will it be released at its regular time and recorded before the flight?
when do you think youll start a planco2 series?
