@Productive Elf Well, the accuracy of the quote doesn't really excuse anyone's actions. Billy was abused and hurt, and he was also an asshole to many people because he can. All in all, his character is pretty depressing 😭
@Um, I never went to ovoo javer yeah, definitely. his character could've stayed alive one more season (at least) and he could've become a part of the "group", just being more friendly and collaborative with everyone else. btw #billydeservedbetter

You can’t ignore his mistakes, but season 3 showcased his full character way better and in the end proved that he was just lost. When given the right motivation, he became good
The only thing, is that earlier, in season 2, they could've written his character better, they could've showed the abuse seen when steve was holding off the demo-dogs in the junkyard, and Billy could've held them off too to help Max, but that all aside, he was one of the best characters in this series
Michael Moretti he watched his mother get abused and then she left him with an abusive dad, who abused him what seemed to be daily. And All of a sudden a sister gets dumped in front of him
Apart from Steve, Billy is my favourite character from Stranger Things. I feel like he elevated season 2 so much and I was gutted when he died in season 3. Unreal arc and the tears in his last moments before he sacrifices himself as El informs him that she knows of his inner pain is just amazing
even if billy treated the ppl around him terribly, he’s such a fascinating character. there’s so much there and they opened the door for some real character development, but then they kill him off. wtffff
Not every character can live. The reason Billy was so great was because you saw who he truly was in the end. Sometimes you don’t appreciate things until they’re gone. So his death was actually a good thing.
Bro his death about destroyed me, the fact that in his final moments he was able to overcome the mind-flayer and sacrificed himself to save the kids,,,,, 😭 I loved getting to learn more of his backstory this season and the writers did SUCH a good job explaining but not excusing his actions. Like we learned what made him into this abusive piece of shit and are able to feel empathy for all that’s he’s gone through, yet that doesn’t make us forgive anything he’s done which made his death hit even harder, because this is a character who I wished would just choke last season, but now I’m full on sobbing over his death because him sacrificing himself was the ultimate price to pay to save el’s and probably everyone else’s life, which showed that deep down, underneath all that trauma and abuse he’s suffered in his life, he was still that young innocent little boy. Now that’s some powerful shit, Duffer Brothers, y’all really did the damn thing
@@BurningMarsh I don’t think he was racist. Yes he hated Lucas in particular, but they didn’t say why. Perhaps he was jealous that Maxine was making friends and he wasn’t. You gotta remember, he didn’t just hate Lucas. He hated everyone who wasn’t Nancy’s mum. He made degrading remarks about high school girls, he hated Hawkings as a town, he hated Steve Harrington, he called a fat kid “lard ass”. He hated pretty much everyone and everything. The way I see it. It was a projection. He hated himself coz he couldn’t protect his mum from his dad. He probably blamed himself for his mum leaving. He didn’t quite come to terms with his past. He was lashing out, taking it out on everyone because he didn’t cope properly with his mum running away especially with his dad around slapping him about. Hence why he worked out like a maniac. He’s a classic case of “Hurt people hurt people”.
@@akshaysingh4712 Lmao you’re kidding, right? “They didn’t say why”? They didn’t have to. He hated Lucas because he’s black. They didn’t really delve into why Billy was racist, but he targeted Lucas - the only black kid in their friend group. He literally told her “don’t hang out with people like that, they cause trouble” specifically pointing to Lucas. He didn’t like the idea that she was potentially romantically involved with a black dude. So yeah, he had many issues, he was hateful in general, he had trauma, but he was also racist lol
@@CrystalRose1111 you think he’d react differently if it was Dustin or Mike? I don’t think so. You could swap any characters for Lucas and everything he said about Lucas would still make sense in terms of his character. It would still be consistent with his character and role. “Don’t hang out with kids like that” could mean anything. He could mean, he hated nerds, or the loners in school or people with full families. Or he could be rambling nonsense like he always does. Adding that he was racist does not make sense. It doesn’t add to his story arch. His story is a redemption story, it takes you from hating him, to feeling sorry for him to loving him. He is a result of his childhood trauma, and environment. When the mind flayer possessed him, and he lost control of his body, there is a good person in there regretting the things he’s forced to do by the mindflayer. In the end, when he focused on the good memories with his mum, he came through and made the ultimate sacrifice, redeeming himself. Adding that he’s racist, doesn’t add anything to that arch. So I think he wasn’t a racist, he just picked on Lucas because he’s the one most frequently seen with Max and he didn’t like Max having any friends. But if it was Dustin, he would have said exactly the same thing. He hated everyone except middle aged mums, which again comes back for his unresolved issues with mummy. His control issues, and rage and hatred of the world was a result of his mummy issues, which came from his childhood trauma which were resolved in the end. He couldn’t control his dad being abusive, his mum abandoning him, his dad having a second family, so he tried to control max and in the end, he lost control of himself with the mind flayer. When he got it back, and sacrificed himself, his last bit of control he said sorry to max. So being a racist, doesn’t fit his character story arch.
Will The Wise honestly I hated Steve in the first half of Season 1 but then when he started to redeem himself he became my fav thing about Stranger Things and the main reason I watch it lol, hope he’s more of a main character in season 4 kinda like season 3
If it wasn't for Dacre probably none of us would've sympathized with Billy in the end. Dacre was bullied through all his school life so he knew how he wanted to realize this role, and that bullies always come from some inner pain or trauma at home... Dacre's just such a professional and the result obviously resonated.
15/10 actor right there. Not only does he know how to express emotions (especially utilizing his own past) but also he gives 110% when he acts, seeing as how he was covered in real cuts and bruises after intense filming scenes because of how hard he went. Ik it's cheesy but like, what a king.

I hate it how they make it so every death is extra devastating because of 1-2 reasons. Billy: He just redeemed himself. Barb: She died because of her best friend's choice which barb told her not to do. Her last word was "Nancy" Bob: Joyce was right there. He was so close. Hopper: Eleven and Joyce. Everyone knew he could survived if the song did not happen. Alexei: He was having fun. He was having fun.

Well yes and no , he was protective over her but in a abusive way because the anger that his father brought he released on Max so he wasn’t a good brother but that’s not his fault , I wish we could have seen more of Max and Billy instead of El and Billy
Sacha Girvan yah they’re step siblings I think that instead of el doing all the stuff with billy ( which didn’t make sense ) I should have been max so before he died she could see that billy was a good guy and learn about each other they could have done that max since she’s part of Billy’s family could see what billy was doing and I don’t know had a connection. In season 4 I would like too see what Billy’s death did to her and her back story and el didn’t know anything about billy before she came into his mind
Thank you! Finally someone who acknowledges that he was a racist. I’m sorry but he deserved to die if that’s the person he was. His character wasn’t going to develop unfortunately and that’s why he had to get killed off.
they probably thought she didn't give a shit about his death because they knew he treated her un-brotherly like, or, because 11 is the main character that everyone must protecc huhu 🙄
Well shit, Eleven used all her powers and almost life force and was sorta...clinging to life. She ultimately helped save everyone (along with Billie) So I think she deserves some type of hug. But I agree Max should’ve gotten a hug, but at least El was the first one to give it to her.

He got very physical with Lucas(a 11 year old kid),was a jerk to Steve, and nearly hit the kids with his car. His past might be a reason that he is aggressive towards most people but I don’t think it’s an excuse.
Yustin J. Don't you remember season 2. The mindflayer tries to erase your memories. El was able to remind him of what is probably one of his most private and favorite memories of his. That scene makes perfect sense.

I love the scene where he tells El that he's going to end everyone, as a tear falls from his eye. Such a nice touch, letting us know that the real Billy was still in there, and he knew that what he was being forced to do was so very wrong. I sometimes wish that Billy had survived as a newly self-aware and more empathetic person. The continued struggle between him and his own dark side could have been epic! Not to mention he would have made an awesome ally in the fight against the mind flayer. But I guess he had to die so that Steve could continue to shine!

He was never a good person to begin with. His death wasn't an ultimate redemption, but it brought some closure seeing how broken and manipulated the poor dude was, and how change was possible.
Billy's dad was a huge piece of shit to him and Max. I was hoping Billy would finally fight back against Neil and get his revenge for what he did to him and his mother.
I like to think him putting himself out in the community being a lifeguard and teaching swimming lessons sort of implies even before he got flayed he was somewhat trying to be a better person, unless he got the job exclusively for the chicks lol or both. If he truly didn't give a shit he wouldn't have called out that kid for running.
The relationship between max and billy is like a roller coaster but when billy sacrificed himself to save el max realized even though she hated him a lot for her whole life she will realize that you don't love someone so much until their gone... because of his abusive dad he became over protective on max and did it the same way his dad did because his dad never loved him so he did not know how to feel or give emotion towards max which just breaks my heart that he's not gonna be in the other seasons anymore.
Basically he only learns aggression, and control as a mean to care for someone from his dad. I was hoping he could have more development arc, but well...
It was really different compared to the relationship between Will and Jonathan, although their parents are also often absent, seems like they also have more room to grow from their surroundings so they turn out quite okay.
Its so sad, Billy just needed help. When his dad hit him, you see him crying because he's overcome so much abuse from his dad its so sad because he did have so much to live for. He just needed help. He needed more support, better friends, and to heal his family relationships

I'm making a petition about how Billy deserved better 😡 NETFLIX YOU DID HIM WRONG
@@killboggins Not an excuse, you clearly didn't understand the comment. They are saying he deserved better because of his life and circumstances, as someone who has been through abuse I can tell you my reaction was to harden, it was to become mean and angry and defensive. This was clearly also his reaction, and it's difficult to be anything but abusive when it's all you've ever known. His character is complex and getting to know him through the series is what made people connect with him and see him as a hero in the end, someone worthy of redemption. He is not evil or irredeemable, he was emotionally stunted and abusive as most boys are in his shoes, he had room to grow and he did. He apologised to Max in the end, upon realising it was an option and something he felt he needed to do. He went through fear and trauma to understand, if he had been kept alive longer I'm sure all of these 'but wah wah he was abusive!!' comments would be fewer, because you would see his true personality and growth. P.S. he was nowhere near as abusive as his father to anyone despite this, and was constantly protecting Max from him and any other outside forces he (wrongfully) deemed harmful AKA Lucas.

My theory: Billy actually cares about max, he just doesnt know how to show them because he gets abused by his dad. Then when he wants to become a good person the mind flayer possessed him.
My theory : Billy probably thinks he could beat the shit out of his dad so he wouldn't abuse him but if his dad found out billy is stronger he's gonna start abusing max instead so he endured to protect her

7:06 when you look at billy’s eyes he is crying, this is the real Billy begging for help, but his body, mouth and voice is possessed by the mind flayer, in this scene he is as scared as Eleven. But he can only show it through his eyes.
Billy was def one of the saddest if not saddest death ever. Hopper would be the saddest but he’s not dead. He’s contracted to play in 4 seasons. Billy is honestly the best actor in my opinion tho
My opinion: If the mind flayer hadn’t infected him, he would never have grown as a person. The mind flayer showed him fear that he’d never experienced, even from his abusive dad. He saw everything the mind flayer made him do and he got to see the damage he had done from a different point of view. He understood fear and emotion. El connected with his on an emotional level which brought him back and gave him the power to overpower the mind flayer’s ability. He sacrificed himself to make up for everything he had done, and NOT just the stuff he did as a mind flayer minion, for everything he’d done.

Billy's character was so well developed... It was mainly shown that him and Max didn't exactly have the best sibling bonding but we realise in season 3 that that is not true. In our mind, Billy was just a bully and a terrible brother... But later we started realising this is not how he always was. Past happenenings affected him but there was still good in him...good not even Max could bring out. Good that only the one person he loved could bring out-of his mother. So hats off to the stranger things director for making such and amazing character. RIP Billy💜 ( 1 purple heart for everyone person who was affected by Billy's death)
It was so sad knowing that the only thing Billy truly wanted was to be happy again, and he didn’t even get that in the end... RIP Billy Hated him in season 2 though he quickly became one of my favourites in season 3.
I feel like Billy is a perfect example of how children mirror there parent’s behavior. You can tell with each instance he’s mean or cruel to those around him it’s because he’s doing it so he doesn’t appear weak. I remember Dax Shepard in his podcast was talking about how when he was younger, guys threatening him and being cruel used to make him feel violent rage, but as he got older all he saw in those guys was a scared broken child that was abused in some way or another putting on a facade of toughness so they can never be hurt like they were when they were helpless.
Even though this was years ago, I cry every single time I hear "Billy" because I think of this scene. It's so sad dude. And Billy was only 18 years old.

Dont think he is underrated the entire season 3 was about him
@@Dupylo he wasn’t even in the season poster
@@Dupylo it was not about him. it was about the mind flayer who possessed him.
Apart from Steve, Billy is my favourite character from Stranger Things. I feel like he elevated season 2 so much and I was gutted when he died in season 3. Unreal arc and the tears in his last moments before he sacrifices himself as El informs him that she knows of his inner pain is just amazing
@@mortaljuicy7548 Yes he was
The actor (Dacre Montgomery), did an amazing job playing Billy. I think he was perfectly cast and his performance is flawless ;)))
even if billy treated the ppl around him terribly, he’s such a fascinating character. there’s so much there and they opened the door for some real character development, but then they kill him off. wtffff
Exactly, totally agree
They already did that with Steve (obviously not to the same extent but it was more realistic)
Plus he’s a good actor
Not every character can live. The reason Billy was so great was because you saw who he truly was in the end. Sometimes you don’t appreciate things until they’re gone. So his death was actually a good thing.
He can treat me terrible any time
I know a lot a people didn't like him, but I was actually really sad when he died. Gone but not forgotten.
Me too
Tessa Gutierrez and he’s also racist.. and that’s the ONLY reason i dislike him.
Me to
Bro his death about destroyed me, the fact that in his final moments he was able to overcome the mind-flayer and sacrificed himself to save the kids,,,,, 😭 I loved getting to learn more of his backstory this season and the writers did SUCH a good job explaining but not excusing his actions.
He was my favorite character, I don't care what he did in the show lol it's all fictional
Someone commented “he wasn’t evil, just broken” and that is so so true. He loved Max he just had some serious issues because of his dad and his past.
@@BurningMarsh how do you know if being racist is impossible to come back from?
I don’t understand why people like to softball racism, even when it’s spelled out. Just call it what it is
@@CrystalRose1111 you think he’d react differently if it was Dustin or Mike?

If it wasn't for Dacre probably none of us would've sympathized with Billy in the end. Dacre was bullied through all his school life so he knew how he wanted to realize this role, and that bullies always come from some inner pain or trauma at home... Dacre's just such a professional and the result obviously resonated.

His character is complex and getting to know him through the series is what made people connect with him and see him as a hero in the end, someone worthy of redemption. He is not evil or irredeemable, he was emotionally stunted and abusive as most boys are in his shoes, he had room to grow and he did. I swear to god, people just love making excuse to defend an a$$hole like Billy he tried to murder a group of kids, tormented other kids in school and at the pool, was violently abusive but his dad was mean to him so it makes it ok..
The truth is that Billy never had a happy beginning and ending😢
He had a '79 Camaro, that's something happy at least.
He was happy with his mom, didn't you see? That was the beginning, air head.
Longwalktonowhere nerdwalk happy moments but not beginning or end they mean.
I hated him in the beginning then when I saw his dad slap him and he stated to cry I was like “OH HE GETS ABUSED” he was my fav character in season 3
8:25 he was happy
My theory:
Billy actually cares about max, he just doesnt know how to show them because he gets abused by his dad. Then when he wants to become a good person the mind flayer possessed him.
My theory :
Billy probably thinks he could beat the shit out of his dad so he wouldn't abuse him but if his dad found out billy is stronger he's gonna start abusing max instead so he endured to protect her
Not a Gamer totally agree!!
Not a Gamer I agree with you, although I wish we could see Billy beating up his abusive dad in the face, that would be pretty satisfying

Billy was def one of the saddest if not saddest death ever. Hopper would be the saddest but he’s not dead. He’s contracted to play in 4 seasons. Billy is honestly the best actor in my opinion tho
Imo Bob or Alexei is the saddest death of the series, Billy was troubled and abused but I never rlly started liking him and Hopper never hit me hard

People don’t change unless these traumatic events happen, so you are right, that experience made him change with the cost of his life

But it would have just repeated Steve’s character development...
Man Billy was one of the greatest characters in this show. I started to hate him but more and more learned to love him and cry when he died.
