There’s a scene that I feel was better done in the live action than the original that I bet the fanbase would rip me apart for( I’ll comment which seen once the blind wave reaction goes up for it)
Iroh and Zuko are the whole show. The funeral scene in this is the best scene of the series, for sure. That scene with Iroh and the Earthbender soldier is also incredible.
I know people being complaining about the live action show but can we all agreed that Iroh is still the GOAT in any versions? Granted I never watched the film.
Zuko and Iroh's relationship especially as displayed during the flashback scene's in this episode were some of my favorite things they did here! Zuko comforting Iroh with a story about Lu Ten as leaves from the vine plays in the background, probably my favorite scene in this whole adaptation. And that exchange: "I don't need a babysitter." "How about a friend?" and "everything I need, is on this ship" like that's genuinely great stuff!
Lu Ten Funeral scene hit hard with a great tribute to Mako with a melody of Leaves of the vines hold very good place in my personal life with two of my uncles no longer around
Greg Baldwin and Paul Sun-Hyung Lee hang out a lot and are great friends. (Both Irohs) Greg Baldwin's most frequently asked request from fans is to sing Leaves from the Vine which he always refuses. He always explains that the song belongs to Mako and only to Mako. That is why he refuses to sing the song for anyone even after taking up the mantle of voicing Uncle Iroh. The fact that Paul also does not sing the song in the first season is also a fitting tribute to Mako as well and makes sense since Iroh is unable to say or speak due to his grief from losing his son. With Season 2 and 3 confirmed by Netflix, it is likely that we will get the live action Iroh Tales of Ba Sing Se episode but he will not actually sing Leaves from the Vine. If it is added in season 2 we are definitely going to need to prepare for more tear-bending.
28:02 There's a short flash back in the original where Iroh is writing a letter to Ozai, or maybe to Zuko or his son. He makes a remark about how beautiful Ba Sing Se is, and he finishes the letter with a joke kinda like "I hope you get to see this city one day, if we don't burn it all first lol."
@senecavanzandt4425 to be fair, he is a king. He could easily end up getting another as a pet throughout the show. Aint like he is lacking in funds or the ability to do so.
I really loved this episode, the added scenes with Iroh and Zuko, more emotional Bumi, the music, the secret tunnel hippies. So good. Fun facts: secret tunnel guy is Justin Wong, Kenny Wu from Mighty Ducks 2 and 3 and Bumi is Utkarash Ambudkar from Pitch Perfect/Ghosts/Free Guy
Im 60 and bawled when the score evolved into that beautiful rendition of Leaves From The Vine during Lu Ten's memorial (again). I also like that they extended it to Iroh's and Zuko's relationship.
aang and iroh having a heart to heart surrounded by jade rocks doesnt happen until season 2 this is cool It gives more depth to Katara and Sokkas relationship having them going into the cave together. Bumi kept his puns the 540 zuko hit was crazy
Seeing reciprocity from Zuko by acting as the kind, reassuring figure for Iroh instead of the other way around like we usually do is one of the best things about this adaptation.
I like bumi's experience. He's bssically the only character that lived before the war, through he war, and after the war. He has experience life in all ways and him being jaded made so much sense
EXACTLY!!! THANK YOU for saying that!! While i Know Bumi was Supposed to be funny, crazy, and ofcourse "Aang's childhood friend", the L.A made him more Realistic in the way that, most people who survives war and sees their friends and Brothers die, thats how they Would end up! Or rather, maybe not during a war that lasted 2-7yrs but, for a man like him that has Fought for a war for 100 YEARS (come to think of it, he Must have been close to death Thousands of times!), its not weird he got saltier and saltier... Especially towards a friend he thought would be his best friend forever, and finds out "he must have died with his people.", Finds out not ONLY is he supposed to save the Entire world, but, for all he knows Aang could have been messing around (WHICH HE DID, kinda in the Animated) INSTEAD of taking his responsibility serious, after finding out he Survived Somehow, still being the same age - by the looks - as he was in the past, ulike himself!.. Idk, i just think, the design Could be better but, i Absolutely loved and think they did a good job with the character... But thats just my own opinion..
I’ve never thought about it like that, but you’re right. If Iroh acted exactly like the animated Iroh it wouldn’t fit the show. He would be TOO jovial to make it work. The audience would know right away that he was a good guy and would roll their eyes whenever something happens. It works in the animated show because goofier things can happen and we can let it go.
How is he a good guy when he burnt people alive for the crime of defending their home from an army hell bent on world domination. The fire nation are fascists who murdered all of aangs people. They had no just cause for their war, it wasn’t revenge, they just want to bring order through fear and pain, iroh was a general in fascist army. And there’s a supremacy element where the fire nation believes they’re better than the others. He might be a nice uncle but I don’t get why everyone loves him.
24:39 I think it should also be noted that not every criticism is the result of comparing it to the original cartoon. Their not mutually exclusive. IMO that shouldn't be the default position. I feel there are issues with the live action adaptation that have nothing to do with the animation.
Leaves from the vine Falling so slow Like fragile tiny shells Drifting in the foam Little soldier boy Come marching home Brave soldier boy Come marching home
The Zuko & Iroh stuff is definitely the strongest stuff this season imo & it looks so good I love how everything looks the set design and costumes are great
Glad I’m not the only one crying at the instrumental Leaves From the Vine. I swear my generation/anyone who’s watched ATLA is Pavlovian conditioned to start sobbing the moment those chords start. Lol
I felt that the cave scene between Aang and Katara was really important in the cartoon, to show how undeveloped the kids are at sharing those kinds of feelings and showing that they DO have those feelings for each other, but it was completely removed here
The scene with Iroh and Zuko at Lu Tens funeral was so unexpected and for me it was the best scene in the episode. And they played ''Leaves from the vine'' in the background that was the moment when i teared up too. The whole scene showed perfectly the great bond betwen Iroh and Zuko and how kind Zuko actually is. Their acting was so great. ofc the whole episode was very good.
Oh man. I was crying so hard in that funeral scene that I didn’t even notice Leaves from the Vine was playing until my sister said through her tears, “you hear it?” 😭
This episode broke me. The first few notes of "Leaves on the Vine" during the funeral scene made be bawl and I kept crying throughout the rest of the episode. I'm really enjoying this adaptation!
Thanks for appreciating Bumi, I think bc of the realistic parts of this show, making him more realistic is too. He would be hurt Aang left, he would be broken and traumatized from 100 years of war. He wouldn’t exactly look like him either, he would look ridiculous if it was 100% exactly like him in the animated show.
I get what they're saying about needing to separate the two versions and judge this one on it's own merits but even doing that, the writing is not great in this show for the most part. There is some good to even great stuff in this like the Lu ten funeral scene or the guard calling out Iroh for his actions as a Fire Nation general but a lot of this show is tell and not show. Sarcastic Chorus has a great (though long) breakdown of the season and hits upon a lot of the issues I had with it myself. Tons of expositioney dialogue, some flat acting (dear god gran-gran's intro speech), character "growth" even though they didn't really do anything to grow, Katara kinda got shafted as a pretty main character. There's more but I'd have to sit and parse out my thoughts better about it. That said it's not a bad show at all but I think even if I had no prior knowledge of ATLA I would still have most of the same problems with it. Overall, some good stuff sprinkled in but I'd give it a 5 or 6 out of 10, not bad but a perfectly average show.
Secret Tunnels!!!! Same spot where Zuko had to make that choice or rescue Zuko that’s perfect. They were playing leafs from the vine instrumental. Bumi: you think like a child Me as aang: fool I’m 12
13:11 - King Bumi’s attitude changes toward Aang seem to be taken from the Fishing Hermit voiced by Ed Asner who accused Aang of running away 100 years before. See book 1 episode 12, The Storm.
I can see why certain people didn't like Bumi but realistically I absolutely loved it because if I was put into position as Bumi, living throughout the 100 years and seeing your best friend who was supposed to save the world turn up out of nowhere, that's how I would react and that's how I would talk to him and show him and try to prove a point.
30:49 Well, in the first episode with airbenders there was a lot of hand-to-hand combat, but I get what you mean, there wasn't a lot of it after that. Maybe in-universe fighting styles changed after 100 years.
Everything about Zuko is so fcking good in this adaptation. Just cut off Aang, Katara and most other characters and give me a show about Zuko and Sokka
Tears from our eyes, Come rolling down, Like little drops of rain, When we hear the sound, Avatar fans, have nothing to defend Against Uncle Iroh's, ability to tearbend. (-read/sing in Uncle Iroh's voice as in Leaves from the Vine)
While I don’t like Bumi’s cynicism bc it doesn’t feel like bumi to me, I agree that this episode really captured the emotion well. Making a point to show the war as not black and white, that there are fire nation citizens against this beyond Iroh, and showing a darker side of Iroh in his responses to acknowledge that he did terrible things as the dragon of the west. That is an amazing touch.
They completely missed the point of using Jet, the enigneer, and the cave of love, Aang learned lessons from each of those story lines and in live action he wasnt around for any of it lol, dude they put katara and sokka in the cave of love together, brother and sister LoL COMPLETELY forgetting the relationshol building between Aang and katara, like they went for incest over the proper story line lol, they really butchered all the side stories and lost so much character development. Oh and cave of lovers WAS IN SEASON 2 not season 1.... netflix cant help themselves from ruining time and tested stories... so pathetic.
So glad to see you guys have been enjoying this show so much. The Iroh scenes were the highlights of this episode. I think the guy that plays him must have felt a lot of pressure in playing this character. I mean to say, Iroh is for most of the fandom the most beloved character. At the same time for most fans Mako's voice will always be Iroh. Looking at those two things this new actor is doing an incredible job in portraying this iconic character. I've got a lot of respect for him. I agree with you guys that on some of the fans responses to this new show. Some fans have never even given this show a fair chance, some even were horrible to some of the child actors, something I will never understood. Like calling some kids "too chubby for the role" I don't get why people should say that, but I guess that is why social media is a toxic place. I can only hope the child actors of this show just don't look too much on social media and read the negativity. You can clearly see that everyone who works on the show is doing the best they can and that they are very passionate about the original show and the story as well.
The show has a lot of problems. Plenty of miscastings. Mai and Ty Lee do not resemble Mai and Ty Lee. Azula was gutted. Bumi is awful. Yue is.... even worse.
I really like zuko and iroh but it feels odd that iroh life changed so late into his life. Zuko is like 13 in the flashback. So Lu Ten died like 3 years ago?
So for a huge ATLA fan that grew up watching it on cable, watching it a few dozen times, and hold it in my heart as a top fave series, I only have one real gripe about the live action series. And that is how much they changed Bumi's personality. I can accept everything else and enjoy it, but his personality change was a huge miss for me. I've accepted it though since as an artistic choice. I am happy they showed some old Bumi in the end.
They made Bumi mad at Aang for not being there in this version, but in this version they also made Aang getting trapped in ice something that happened when he went for a walk to clear his head, instead of him running away intentionally. So it's not even his fault but it's being treated as if it's even more his fault than it was in the old version. Both changes clash with each other so harshly, I don't understand why they made them both.
Everything in the live action series feels very surface level to me. It's coasting by on viewers filling in the gaps with their memories of the animated series. Kind of like a What If version of Avatar
Eh, think it's just kind of tacked on. Not really good representation if they're dead and will never be mentioned again. Like if they retconned that some background characters in Star Wars are actually gay. Like ok? That just feels tacked on without any real purpose or for a checkmark. Korrasami and some gay men in the Yangchen novels are far better. The original Oma and Shu story is pretty similar to Romeo and Juliette, the most famous of star-crossed lovers.
@@andrewli6606 i mean knowing shakespeare i wouldn't be surprised if Romeo and Juliet was an intended queer allegory anyways. This adds to the idea of gay people just existing, it not being anything else than regular since its not really highlighted other than the art and them both having feminine pronouns. Dont only make queer rep when its plot relevant or with MC, make characters queer anytime because thats normalization
@@andrewli6606 disagree. Them being from towns going to war is cool. But now there is more layers to them. A forbidden love that isn't accepted by the ppl around them. They having to sneak around. It works way better.

Sounds like C.S. Lewis and Rev. W Awdry would have compared notes on how to write good children’s stories.

Paul Sun-Hyung Lee absolutely kills it as Iroh in this episode. Man is levels above. You can see the emotion just in his eyes.

Yue is.... even worse.
Did you notice that Oma and Shu are two women in the show? It is an interesting change that the tv series made to make the show more inclusive.
I really like zuko and iroh but it feels odd that iroh life changed so late into his life. Zuko is like 13 in the flashback. So Lu Ten died like 3 years ago?
3:42 this reminds me of Mando S3, when Bo invited Din over for a feast. I imagined Grogu saying “a FEAST?!? Dad pls”
I can see Boomi as Master Roshi in Dragon Ball Z Live-action
I didn't love the remake, but they really nailed Iroh and Zuko
Anyone else get Grand Nagus Zek vibes off King Bumi?
They didnt even have anng there for the tunnel of love? Tf lol
"I think that's my favorite added scene"
2 seconds later another added scene just blows it away.
1:54 🤣
Overall, the series is kind of mid, BUT, the Zuko and Iroh moments are probably the show’s only saving grace.
Everything in the live action series feels very surface level to me. It's coasting by on viewers filling in the gaps with their memories of the animated series. Kind of like a What If version of Avatar
I like that oma and shu are lesbians in this version
Were they lesbians or gay? Cuz I keep hearing different things.
Overall it's a better change. It makes it more "forbidden"
@@bryzantine1571 they're both women, they're referred to as "she/her" as the singer tells the story. And looking at the art they seem to be women too
Eh, think it's just kind of tacked on.
