if you leave them alone they will have all of their friends come over and they will get into the liquor cabinet. they're bad.

Worse part is that they have more Friends than you do. Not putting you Down it’s just my Bassett hound knew more Neighbors than I did

My little droopy doesn’t necessarily like being left alone. But he is very much a basset hound, meaning he loves his reserved spot on the couch. He like to sleep. A lot!!!

Angus is not keen on being left alone. We have two hounds, they're absolutely fine at home as long as they're together

My second basset, Petunia, absolutely hated to be left alone. After she was gone, I got Peanut and Oreo together. They came from the same litter and were two halves of one dog. Unfortunately, when Oreo died first, Peanut fell apart and I had to put her down 2 months later. My first basset, Rappunzel, had to be an only dog. She would not have shared me with another dog. They were all perfect and I really miss them. I look forward to when I can get another basset. My father had a kennel license, so I grew up with many dogs, but bassets are by far the best.

I am so lucky my basset does fine alone. I left her at home alone for a little longer each time and now she is fine for even almost all day long sometimes. I am the one that gets seperation anxiety!

When I got my basset as a puppy, he experienced severe separation anxiety; I ended up just bringing him to work with me!

I have two Basset hounds that are 2 months apart in age. They do extremely we together. If they are apart it’s very bad. But if they have each other in an enclosure the do very well. I watch them on ring cameras while I’m at work and as long as they are together they do quite well.

Our late hound loved his crate. We had the crate in our large walk-in closet, which kind of created a den/cave, and as soon as he was in the crate he pretty much went to sleep. We really only crated him at night, because otherwise he’d never really settle down and keep us awake. At the same time, we could leave the house for a couple of hours to run errands and he was content to doze on his favorite dog bed.

We leave our basset alone and he’s fine. They need a lot of training since bassets are very stubborn but yes if you put in the time to train them they can be left alone

When mine was 2 months old I got A Bassett beagle mix and it turned out to be the perfect combo. They were together for almost 10 years.

Had two bassets , fantastic dogs but they don’t like being left for more than four hours especially the first two years when they are destructive.

I had a basset and black lab team who loved to roam during the day but always found their way home(they knew where their food /when it was ready ) great team even knew the neighbor would feed them if they stopped by.

I do this with my now 6mo BH since we adopted him 2 mo ago and he whines for 1 min and then settles. When I come back. he is content sleeping in this lil fenced area inside our home. Also, I leave the room often and he pretty much just lays down. also he asks to go out ogten and likes spending time alone outside. He also LOVES to be around me, I dont leave him for more than 3 hours at the time and I take him with me whenever I can. Also we do doggy daycare if we need to leave him for more than 5 hrs.

Looking to get a Basset Hound Beagle mix to train to be my EMS PTSD Service Dog and Medical Alert. She was a rescue from bad breeder, she is nervous around people, but gets along with cats and dogs. She is around one and I know it may take longer because the breed is stubborn. I was told she'd make a good EMS PTSD and especially Medical Alert dog if she gets over fear of people and is given right training willing to invest the time and energy and build confidence. My parents say oh this breed won't do they are to stubborn and blah, blah blah..... I was a Service Dog can be if put in the time, energy and training to be a potential Service Dog. The Rescue thinks because of my training I do with my cats and dog and my dogs task training would give the Basset Hound Beagle mix the right influence and someone who knows basic training abilities, while the foster person said not sure with her nervous around people.
    What's your thoughts and opinions

I have 2.. one is 3 and he is perfectly ok with being left alone and taking a nap for a couple of hours. But my other one is one and can get destructive at times when my wife and I are gone too long.

I wonder how Dean the Basset would do if he was left alone for a whole day with just enough food, water and bathroom access.?

I can answer the question, can a Basset Hound be left alone. No, they cannot be left alone.

I completely agree. I had a basset named Sidney for 11 beautiful years. I miss him every day now. He could crack a safe if there was a sandwich in it. He was exceptionally intelligent.

Hello! I'm planning on getting a male basset hound and have some questions, I've never owned a basset hound and already own a Labrador and bullarab (9 and 6year old) I live with my parents who are home fortnightly and would be able to help some.
I wanted to know if they will do ok with dogs larger than them, by being left alone since I also have to work.
If I do create train the puppy, do I need to do the same for my already owned dogs (they have never had a create)?
Please anyone can answer I would really appreciate it!! Thank you!

Generic advice for an average dog is not going to cut it for Bassets. They don't do crates. They weigh too much, you'd have a broken back slinging a crate with a 65 lb. Basset in it. When you leave a Basset alone, they will do three or four things, eat or drink, sleep and crap.

My basset hound can be left alone. Does she prefer it? No, but she can be left alone comfortably

  • @heidis2330

I grew up with a basset hound. Yes they can be left alone but like all other dogs they should have a dog friend. Also you need to train them to not be insecure when left alone. They need to know when you leave you will come back so you got to start when they are young. i do not approve of crates unless you keep it open. God forbid there is an emergency and they need to move. My basset hound was great not going in the bathroom in the house. He never had an accident unless we were gone for an outrageous amount of time.

Had my basset since 8 weeks old and she is absolutely fine by herself for 9 hours a day 5 days a week........I don't see how they wouldn't with some common sense training

I trust my Droopy pretty much unquestioningly. He’s very lazy and also house trained. He very rarely has accidents in the house. If it does happen I can only blame myself.

Why get a dog if you will leave it for 9 hours a day? Do NOT have a dog if you cannot spent time with it
