    The deep intelligence of Sony engineers and their experience in the field of cameras makes most people not understand these many features and they are not appreciated. This is the smartest camera in a phone that I have seen in my life . Steve Jobs was a fan of Sony cameras, and I remember that Steve Jobs used to visit Sony factories and meet senior Sony engineers with the aim of improving iPhone cameras, and let's not forget also that Tim Cook also went there to see the new Sony sensors ..It's a shame that Sony is underestimated because of some TH-camr who throws bad words about Sony cameras because he likes another product or doesn't know how to use this camera.

      @@SomeGadgetGuy exactly. We are on the 5th generation of this device and Sony has only added more camera features. But from a basic platform, they have expanded since the mark I. I see these reviewers every year giving basically the same reviews and doing "camera tests" in full auto all the time. It's just pointless to me. They know it's a niche phone, yet they treat it like a pixel, iphone, or galaxy. Either way, I'm happy there are a few niche reviewers who actually review these devices to their fullest extent

    I'm so happy they brought seamless zoom. (could be smoother but it's fine) That was one weird thing I didn't like about the last phone - you had to pick your lens before shooting "like a _real_ camera."
    But that's whats cool about a phone as opposed to a dslr, I don't have to "switch lenses." They are all there and should be able to all go at once if I really want.
    It opens up more possibilities - my LG V30 had a mode that shot with the selfie cam in the corner of the frame, so you can do a vlog style video right from the camera app itself.

    In less than a month, the xSperia 1 Mark 5 has became the standard for photography and videography.
    I saw all the videos here on YT criticising Sony for the excessively complex camera app; I've been a professional photographer in the film era, and the Mark 5 has been the first phone where I have the possibility to use all the experience I have as photographer. I can only imagine why non-professionals are calling for a dumbed-down experience - like the Apple-Samsung-Google photo app provides to casual users.

Because every tine i try to make exposure changes on my Xiaomi. The hdr and wide dynamic range kicks in, and makes the changes almost unnoticeable. I can see that you can adjust the level of hdr/dynamic range on the Xperia, which I find very useful.

    With Filmic going subscription, it's nice to have the option of a phone with similar levels of control (though still not exactly there with color and exposure granularity in shot) and similar features like focus peaking and racking, better mated and optimized to the hardware.
    It still irks me how any company can give you a video mode where you CANNOT tap to focus or expose for fully a third of your frame and think that's job done. Almost ANY aftermarket solution is better. But they often don't have access to the full range of resolutions and frame rates of the phone.
    Sony is doing it right.

    Absolutely fantastic video and break down. I really have no patience or time anymore for TH-cam "tech reviewers" who act like they just can't figure out the camera system. Or they literally are incapable of doing so. As you say they are simply displaying that they are not good at either photography or tech. I'm no tech guru by any stretch if the imagination and I figured out the Xperia camera system after a few hours of playing around with it.
    Far too many TH-cam "tech reviewers" literally don't know how anything works outside of an iphone. But that just means they know nothing. And are thus a waste of my time. Why on earth would I take photography advice about any device from someone that only knows how an iphone works? That would be like me getting advice on high performance cars from someone that only knows Volkswagen cars. Just utterly asinine.

    The downside of having three separate apps is that it consume more internal storage space than a single Camera app. However, the upside to it is that each app can be perfectly tailored to its intention. If I want 21:9 4K, I go CinemaPro. If I want 16:9 4K, I use VideoPro. If I want Alpha-grade manual control, I use PhotoPro. Of course you can cram everything into the single Camera app, but it can end up being all cluttered and messy.

    One Question I have about the Sony 1V that nobody seems to answer ist, that it says it has a 48megapixel main camera, but does bin down to 12mp. So can't I take 48 Megapixel photos? It would be important, for example, if I got to a museum, and take a picture of a painting, its very handy if I can still read the little badge about the painter etc on it. Currently I am using my xz1 (since 2017), and it has 19mp, but often I can barely read the text, when the paintings become bigger and I have to go aways. Its meant as a mental note for me. Also, does the 1V have a feature where I can still have a on-Screen shutter button in the pro mode in landscape view? Its not that I would use it anyways, the physical Shutter button is my to go USP for the sony anyways, but If you hand somebody the phone they are probably too stupid to take the photo (Had this often with the XZ1 too, when It would decativate the camera after a few seconds). Does the pressing of the Shutterbutton with the phone in Stand-By still bring my straight to the camera? That would be very important to me, because I always liked going straight to the camera for a quick shot, without fiddling through the login.

    I like your playful scolding of other smartphone TH-camrs that just dismiss these phones to feed their audiences essentially the same smartphones each year.
    It's comical how bad they are with cameras and seeing their results most of the time is sad. Someone has to teach them a few things.

    • @anecro
      @anecro ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also, I have to mention in a separate comment how much Sony listens compared to other manufacturers.
      People wanted a UI that rotates. They added that. And not only that, they also made it so that the digital shutter button appears in portrait mode, which is great for intervalometer apps and something I personally could REALLY use.
      People, especially Xperia fans themselves, really wanted a new sensor because the old main one was getting old and Sony not only gave us a bigger one, but a hardware-level, never before seen upgrade that doesn't require software magic to deliver in low light and naturally has both a wider dynamic range and low noise even in RAWs.
      People were asking for focus peaking. They added that.
      People wanted a night mode. They added that.
      They increased the burst mode to 30 freaking fps, which no other phone is able to do, not even close.
      I, as a 5 III owner, wished I had the ability to use the burst mode for HDR photos and now that's possible.
      The new sensor is capable of real low ISOs, down to 25, which is incredible for bright light shooting conditions or even daylight long exposures, which is something I wish I had and is incredibly hard to do on smartphones without the use of an external ND filter.
      Everybody was asking for more video options in photo pro and they've once again delivered, offering a few more settings than the competition even.
      They ported over an already-color corrected profile from their alpha cameras, which means you no longer need to grade and convert your HDR footage if you don't want to. I know I was screaming about something like this and it's here now.
      People complained up to the III series phones about the glossy back and the lack of grip, so Sony made Xperia backs frosty with the IV phones and then gave them the Pro-I's wired frame design as well as this dotted back.
      And on top of all of this, their volume buttons act as zoom buttons right from the get go. This is how you can tell a phone knows how to be a good photography phone. Even before I knew this much about photography I was always very annoyed at the fact that all phone brands think volume buttons should be shutter buttons.
      There's 2 things Sony should do now:
      1) Add exposure zebras to complete the helpful camera UI elements.
      2) Include the multiple-frame-merging feature their alpha cameras have so that you can see your subject in pitch black conditions. This would be a huge revolution in the smartphone space.

    I'm far from a photographic expert, but everything you outlined here looks very approachable and not intimidating. If anything, I find the menu structure in typical android photo apps to be less clear than the Sony. I wouldn't hesitate to get this phone if it were available in my country.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think it's fair to be concerned about what someone is familiar with. If you've only ever shot on iPhones, then a camera app like this is REALLY unfamiliar. But if you've ever handled a mirrorless or an SLR (or if you're old enough like me to have shot on film) then this is REALLY accessible.

    • @andoletube
      @andoletube ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@SomeGadgetGuy I agree with that, Juan. But I've never used an SLR or mirrorless camera in my life, and I found your explanation of the various layers of control on the Sony 1 mk V made a lot of sense to me, rather than being intimidating. It seems more organised than what I have on my Samsung.
      My Samsung confuses the heck out of me because the menu structure has too many rabbit holes and it's easy to forget where everything is, plus you can't see what you changed and whether it's still changed, or whether it reverted to the standard settings. The end result for me is that I rarely use anything beyond the top layer of auto mode. On the Sony, along with your guidance on this video, I feel that I would have no trouble exploring the different controls and parameters as my photographic expertise grew. I feel it's designed to grow your understanding of photography rather than intimidate you - which is what Android tends to do.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There I agree. A sony is built to be more like a camera, and it's not trying to cater to ALL consumers in that regard. I think engineers at Samsung think they have to make an app for both iPhone users (who will likely never switch to an Android) AND include all the settings for a photographer more familiar with manual modes, and it kinda makes a mess. Some do this better than others. Vivo and Xiaomi apps are also SUPER messy, but I feel they're a bit more accessible at sorting the more pro features.
      For a Samsung user, I'd recommend digging more into the expert pro mode. Samsung split off a separate RAW mode to shoot in, and I think it's a bit better. Not Sony level, but less "smartphone-y".

    I get that a simple point and shoot experience is easier but I don't get why people say Sony camera apps is convoluted. Did people forget learning exist? Obviously there's the simple camera app for everybody else to use. Ofc the debate between cameras and phones exist but nobody would bring a kilogram worth of cameras every time. But having similar controls to a camera is very useful especially when you want to adjust a setting or two. Would've been nice if they can add it to their apps like any others do but it may cause some unnecessary changes. It's a learning curve but it will help you get used to camera terms and settings when you do go cameras.

      @joelconolly5574 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SomeGadgetGuy that's another fair point there. They can create great cinematography but can't on the same but smaller platform? I know it's a smartphone but it's basically a camera in a phone. How is it any different from other camera phones like the Xiaomi 13 Ultra or the Vivo X90 Pro Plus. It's basically those two without too much computational photography. Instead of the phone taking over, you are the driver. You set destination, you set your gears and your off to your destination. But all people want is a free ride. I'm not saying the Xperia is a perfect phone but if they really want to review this as another generic device, what exactly are they telling their customers?

For example, as a Xperia 1mk4 user, even with all software upgrades (64.1.A.0.891) the device is still having issues with the worst bokeh integration ever for a front camera in a smartphone, and much cheaper Xperia like Ace III (~ $100 new) have the front camera Api2 manual active (better even), while 1mk4 (1/5 devices) do not. The 1s shutter speed mode at 64-200 ISO manual set, results with burned pixels in the photo! Who to solve it if not Sony's engineers that now are avoiding fixing or answering to e-mails, saying the device is on par with what it is meant to be? So please check these too and send to Sony these essential issues to be fixed for such $1500+ devices (for 1mk4 too). You can help users that are not listened by Sony, BIG TIME!
    Thank you so much for all your work!

    Thank you for sharing and creating this video. In my view this is probably the closest a phone has come to making 1 inch point and shoot cameras useless. It is so versatile by the looks of it. Seems like a zv1 in a phone body with better specs and it can act as a monitor, recording studio, a or B-roll camera and youtube talking head camera. How does the battery perform when shooting video or editing them?

I would love to see how the HLG/BT.2020 holds up when when color grading in Resolve and if it's true 10bit footage. I feel like nobody else seems to care about that, but I would find it really interesting to find out if one can make it look like an alpha camera shooting SLOG3!!!

      I just want to point out. Heating issues aren't a binary situation. It's not "fixed" or "broken". We really need to describe what the limits are, and how to get the best out of every phone. EVERY phone will run hot and thermal throttle if you use every feature (screen, SOC, battery, 5G radio, camera) to it's max all at once, especially in warm weather. What we SHOULD be talking about, what ARE the limits so people know better what they can really count on in the field.
      If you want the features of a Sony, a 1IV might be a good buy if you can get one for a good price now. It's not "broken", I shoot A LOT of 4K120 on mine. But i do have to babysit it more than the 1V.

      I have had the 5 iii for a little over a year now. The apps are still very similar but I do notice the differences. The only thing I feel like I’m missing is the video pro app from the 4:th gen xperia series. That alone won’t however get me to upgrade, I’ll probably keep my current phone until it dies.

    • @rwilifeandtravel
      @rwilifeandtravel ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SomeGadgetGuy I think we have to be realistic regarding overheating in smartphones. Dedicated cameras can overheat when shooting 4K so it's not surprising that smartphones overheat more quickly with their slim dimensions. I think the Xperias may have set their thermal limit a little lower than other brands to protect battery health. Engineering compromises always have to be made and each brand has their preferences.

    @matthewrennie5163 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Juan. Thanks for your content. It's always interesting to see your take on tech which can be different to other reviewers.
    I'm seriously considering the Xperia 1 V. I wonder if you could help with an answer to a question that Sony's chat helpline couldn't answer for me. Does the phone have a bokeh mode in for video? I can see from online info that in the Photography Pro app's Basic mode, there is a Bokeh Mode icon when you have the Photo option selected. However, when you select the Video option in this same area, I think the Bokeh Mode option disappears - i.e. no Bokeh Mode in video. Are you able to confirm or otherwise?

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

      SUPER basic. There is a bokeh video mode in 1080p but not 4K, and it only ONLY seems to work with face detection. You can't set it on another focus point. I'm probably NEVER going to use this given the natural focus fall off of the larger main sensor. Would have been nice to have on the tele lens tho.

    • @matthewrennie5163
      @matthewrennie5163 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for that.
      It's a shame, but not a surprise. If anything, and in a way, I'm surprised they have any video bokeh mode at all given the absolute radio silence on the subject from their marketing. On the other hand, if they made a fuss about it, they would probably get shot down for its' limitations.
      I can't help thinking that improvements in bokeh modes should be the top priority for camera development in phones. Accepting the increases in sensor sizes, bokeh still seems to be the biggest weakness of camera phones compared to dedicated cameras. Given the physics of small sensors and the space limitations of phones, computational processing seems like the only option.
      Camera phones already seem to be making strides in their other natural weakness, low light conditions, and I'm sure further improvements will come.
      Talking of which, the Xperia 1 V seems to be getting very positive reviews of its' daylight performance (both photo & video), reasonably positive reviews of the new Night Mode for photos, but seems to be regarded as a bit weaker for video in low light, and to have a generally lower dynamic range (but conversely less noise and artifacts) than its' more computational competitors.
      Having used it yourself, do you agree with that, or do you have a different experience? As always interested in your take.

    • @SomeGadgetGuy
      @SomeGadgetGuy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's tough to do a fair comparison without REALLY digging into NERDCORE tech.
      Like, critiquing dynamic range. It's a red flag to hear someone complain about "lower" d-range, but with less noise. How is that person measuring and comparing? What modes are they shooting in (where HLG vs s-cine can make a HUGE difference in grading)? Are they mentioning native ISO (where the Sony can also slide down to a crazy low iso25)? I'm honestly not sure how I would fairly grade sensor performance at comparable "noise". Would that give the Sony a stop or two advantage in video quality?
      There are a LOT of moving parts in a conversation like this, and it's REALLY not as easy as "I shot two clips, and this one has the better colors!"

    Please mention what it misses out on when compared to an actual alpha camera/ or any mirrorless camera. I am pretty sure it is not the full alpha experience. For a start i know the Xperia doesnt have custom picture profiles, to adjust contrast, saturation and sharpness of the video or photos. Also what is the bitrate of the videos for different resolutions and framerates? Does it shoot 10 bit video? No one talks about these, please cover these in your full review.
