the thing i think happens as well is the people following these guides are inexperienced with them. maybe even just built their own pc and dont know that you can only overclock a pc to a certain extent before you end up doing this. knew someone who got a crypto miner that would take a lot of resources. so it ended up turning the pc off as it exceeded what it could do. each time they turned it on it turned back off. its not bad to follow a guide but before you overclock or whatever else you should look into the stuff they are doing to see what each thing is doing for your pc as well as what your pc can take/doesnt need active for it to actually run. though i feel that is part of the fun. figuring out what works just right for you and your system.
System optimization has been my job for 10 years. Windows xp/dos/95/98/vista/7. Softwarewise. It would really help people out, making systems more stable and faster. So apart from adding more memory or installing a new hdd with a clean install, you couldn't really do much about its slowness; no SSD drives existed. So... Software tweaking it was.

I have not kept my data on the boot drive for over 20 years. With drives being so affordable, there is no reason not to have separate data/gaming drives. You can move your documents folder to a drive other than C:\. This lessens the stress of rebuilding your boot drive.
indeed i learnt many years ago if it's important to you dont keep it on the same drive as windows also i keep windows on its own drive and install evey thing i can on the D drive that way i can reset windows and only loose like winrar and some drivers
I use all the variety of affordable these days storage media, which include: 1. SSD as a primary system, data workflow drive. 2. Compact memory cards for their reasonable price and compact size ) - they are use for some rarely used files/archives/finished projects whatsoever. and 3. HDDs for a long-term data storage, backups, and for their best price per TB. Nothing, even old HDDs are wasted, they just used for extra backup
Yea, learned this quick myself when I used to use Windows as my main OS. Now I'm using Linux and still does this. It makes restoring your data much easier if your personal files are separated from the main OS drive.
Same here, I came from years of using Amiga's with hard drives like the 2000's and 4000's to the PC in the early 90's, and always kept the workbench drive clear of apps and the BBS I was running, so was used it to keeping things separate, this is something UNIX and Linux has always got right but where windows has always fallen on its face ...
Reminds me of the back in the 90s 'joke' advice to delete a certain system file. I did so having backed up the system, thinking I could recover, being PC savvy, and had to reinstall all my files from backup, losing hours.
just delete the folder "system32" in your "Windows" folder. This is where Windows stores all of it's bloated and useless components (as well as all the necessary ones too, for those that don't get the joke)
When you're as old a user as I am, you learn to stick with vanilla settings in your registry. Here's a good rule of thumb: Anything that requires you to go into a scary looking menu you never seen before during normal use of your Windows is probably a bad idea. Save yourself a lot of headaches and quit while you're ahead.
Linux and Mac both have poweruser prizes at the end of those scary menus and very little risk if any to the system. It’s specially a windows trap to tinker, and indeed it seems to be intentionally designed to punish you for trying to use your own system. So Windows software is as locked down as Mac hardware, but in some great irony it seems that Mac OS is far harder to break via tinkering, whereas one single change in WIndows registry can bork your entire system immediately.

@@ghost-user559 when my ssd failed thanks to the seller using a fake ssd i was using certain commands in MacOS and it would always say not to do it if you weren't experienced in it. There seems to be a lot of these tech videos on what to do to speed up or enhance your computer experience and it always ends up with damage to the system, even something as basic as getting an external microphone to work on MacOS is difficult to follow with these youtube videos because they state a whole lot of nothing or just inaccurate techniques that don't work especially on the retina macbooks.
@@ColinsCity Yeah I have gone down the rabbit hole for tinkering with different systems. I like that MacOS warns you, but so far I have never actually broken anything by changing anything on my Mac. Windows doesn’t warn you, and even a simple change can be very difficult and wreak havoc on your system. The one exception in MacOS is “permissions”. Don’t ever change them lol. That’s the only time I ever actually had to reinstall because the system was locked out of access to my drive. So as long as you don’t change permissions for files you don’t have a good understanding of, you should not run into any issues.
That is why today I use Linux and Amiga Emulators on my computers. They work excellent, and if you are into data basing well Amiga has some excellent do everything data bases.
I have a 3 prong approach to taming windows. 1. Disable anything non-essential from startup, 2. uninstall any software that you do not use anymore, and 3. REBOOT YOUR MACHINE AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK. With the last being the *easiest* solution to a ridiculous amount of weird system behavior, and for some reason is the one thing that nobody ever wants to do.
@@analogicparadox You mean, you "do" shut down your computer daily? Haven't shutdown a single PC I've owned since I started building them, and that was about 20 years ago. I shut them down for a good cleaning every 6 months, and that's about it. That's what power profiles are for. Like each time you start a car, each time you start your computer, is where the most damage is done, especially if you still use spinning HDDs. Repeated thermal expansion and contraction of the CPU and GPU die, is also something to consider. But, to each their own. Do what you will with your own property. 👍
starting up/down for computer is not the same as for a car. Computer cpu/gpu and in less extent also memory and other components are much more stressed under heavy load/idle cycle than start up/shut down cycle. Spinning up HDDs is also not valid any more cause manufacturers made this cycle count end of life quite significant. HDDs still die, and may die any moment, but there is no confirmation that any moderate load or frequent (like every 10 min) spinning up/down cycle decreases the life expectation. HDDs are still the primary data storage. And if someone doesn't use it, then it's highly likely that person just doesn't count money
You shouldn't be running a computer for 24 hours without a reboot, ever. A week is fucken ridiculous, how lazy do you gotta be to go to the menu and restart the damn pc....
The biggest mistake ppl make is to store personal files on the system disk. Hard-/sym-linking files and folders to a different drive probably is a bit intimidating to some and takes some getting used to, but it's worth it. It reduces a broken Windows install from a catastrophe to the annoyance of having to set up a new system when you hadn't planned on spending time on it.
@@STCatchMeTRACjRoProbably, but Windows actually has that functionality built-in now, at least for the default folders. Ppl can relocate their files without having to install tools or understand what's going on under the hood. Moving their documents and pictures folders etc to an inexpensive StorageSpaces array could prevent a worst case scenario for most. Even the cases of most pre-built systems have room for a cost effective solution like e.g. two 2.5" Intenso SSDs. It's frustrating to see so many ppl willing to spend time tinkering with Win components but not spare a few thoughts and maybe 50 bucks to protect their data.
The best solution would be to invest in Network Attached Storage. You can buy complete solutions like Synology or QNAP or set it up yourself using an old computer, a couple of hard drives and a free and open source NAS operating system called TrueNAS. It is a lot safer and more durable than any single disk that's in an actively used PC where something can go wrong. And you can access this storage from any machine in your network! Even your smartphone.
@@protator It's had that ability for a long, LONG time - I think it was added to Properties in Windows XP, and before that, you just changed some registry entries.

I Have been an IT admin for over 25 years... and I have seen people do some strange things to their computer. Like actually call phone numbers in phishing e-mail, or follow instructions from spam pop-ups. Do these people follow the advice to backup their computers? (Oh hell NO they do not ever back up their stuff) You cannot fix stupid and you cannot make a computer idiot proof. The ONLY way they will learn is by being burned dozens of times. And yes some very intelligent and thoughtful friends and family have been burned time and time again. And other friends and family I am just waiting for it to happen to them. BUT people learn be DOING and by EXPERIENCE.... and most will only learn AFTER they have been screwed. (And some not even then)
This is the consequence of giving the masses an easy access to computers with easy GUIs and no knowledge required. Back in the DOS or early Linux days you had to really know what you're doing to use a computer. Of course, overall accesibility is a good thing and I am not trying to gatekeep computing. But it's undeniable that most PC users lack basic skills because they never had to learn them. And in the end it comes back to bite them in the ass. We should educate people more.

Sadly you can only disable some stuff, but a lot of telemetry is locked in and you can't change that. The only solution is to switch to an open source operating system that actually respects it's users.
Another thing you can do to access a borked system is get a Linux image on a USB stick and boot into that, in case you only have one PC. Once you've backed up the data you can then reinstall windows, or just install Linux if you want to move away from Microsoft's spyware of an OS.
The very first thing I do with a new computer, is boot into Linux and make an image of the hard disk for "out of box experience". Now THAT is a re-install!
Linux to the Rescue⁉️ No‼️ Start with installing Linux on the System, then install Winderz in a Virtual Machine. I used to call it "Cocooning". That way, when Winderz inevitably Borked itself, you only had to go back to the Last good Snapshot and you're back to "Normal" in a few minutes.
@@PaulHawkins Yes. Snapshots are *amazing* . I use Oracle Virtual Box for the same benefit; but a host running QEMU or similar is the same but less vulnerable to Stuff. As it happens, Linux can shapshot itself if you are using the LVM, Logical Volume Manager, which is handy just in case an update causes a big malfunction which sometimes is the case. You update a library and kaboom, fourteen processes that depended on it suddenly fail.
You're 2 years out of luck - Windows 11 encrypts the boot drives of your system now by default, so if your OS is corrupt, your only solution is to buy a new computer, as you probably lost your Windows key, as well
If you reinstalling Windows, check if you have programs that you need to "unregister" them (usually professional applications) or you might be stuck working with their tech support for days to get them registered again.
It's unbelievable what people are willing to risk, just for "a few fps more". Also, I must admit, that I find it hilarious, every time (and it happens regularly) I see / hear someone complain about "extremely bad performance", on what SHOULD be a top spec PC, because of too much tinkering with "optimizations". The following is actually a TRUE experience!! Not long ago, a fellow Flight-simmer, with a pretty nice rig (Ryzen 7 7800 3D, 32 gigs of DDR5 ram, and a RTX 4080), had WORSE performance in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, than I have with my (pretty much) Meh, Ryzen 5 4600G, 32 gigs of DDR4 and RTX 2060. The difference? First of : Even though his settings were different than mine, they were actually not THAT different!! He basically ran MSFS in 1080 and upscaled it, and only had marginally higher LOD settings etc. than me, since he prefers performance over "overblown cosmetics" (as he puts it). Anyway. The difference : He had "optimized" the HELL out of his PC - while I haven't. 😏😉 To round things off, I just need to tell, that he has managed to "de-optimize" his PC - and it absolutely runs BETTER THAN EVER. 😉👍 And DEFINITELY better than mine!!!!! 🤣
Don't use Windows to recover data off a drive that came out of a Windows system. The take ownership of files requirement is a dumb Windows limitation. Instead boot to a Linux distro, like Linux Mint for instance and you can copy files directly without having to run any scripts.
Four minutes into a 9 1/2 minute video and this guy tells me that he destroyed his PC, yet he can’t even describe what he did. Sounds like his methodology is the problem. Are you trying to avoid upgrading your CPU, your RAM, your storage solution, or GPU. If you write down all the steps involved, and what end result you’re expecting to get without having a rollback plan, then no one can help you unless you’re willing to pay tech-support a lot of money. Better to not start messing with things until you’ve played in a virtual machine and understand how system components affect each other.

I've taught myself everything I know, and also research (like you CLEARLY evidenced you do yourself) my ass off. Years ago I made a pact with myself. "Save your money until you can buy the thing capable of doing the things just one or two steps beyond what YOU will do with it" And that self-advice has never failed me. I purposefully build a few steps beyond what I could ever need, that way tweaks and performance really never come to mind. More creators need to do what you did right here. The only thing I really don't like about a fresh windows install instead of upgrading is that I have so many things installed that I need to reinstall from scratch. Especially since it's my daily driver for years now.
I know that feeling. Later on you will learn to backup all your important files and restore them on a freshly installed OS. 😅 If you try to learn Linux and switch to it, it is surprisingly easier to manage (depending on your distro) and reinstalling your apps again as Linux uses app repos (kind of like Google Playstore) and you don't have to hunt for apps on different websites or accidentally install a malware.

@@dh2032the repos are maintained by either the distro devs or other volunteers, most also use package signing so it checks if the thing you are installing is the right one. I can't remember the last time that a package was malware, the only thing that comes to mind is the Linux Mint website being hacked and having the iso changed to a version with a backdoor in like 2016.

I also am among that group that keeps data on a separate drive from the Windows drive. Regardless, I had to replace two SSDs in the past year. Both were PNY 500GB drives, and both failed, so my trust in that brand has dropped quite a bit. Reinstalling Windows was a pain, but there was minimal loss of information, because everything important was on a second drive, which itself is backed up to another drive. So much data - so few drives.
Sounds more like an issue with your storage choice than where your data is. PNY is a cheapo brand bottom of the barrel. I've kept a lot of my data on the boot drive ever since I owned a PC. Never had a failure. Even my old 6gb WD Caviar that ran for 15 years still works today.
Yeah, PNY drives are really prone to failure. IIRC, the controller chipsets meant to improve the lifespan of the drives do the opposite, and are usually the root cause of the SSD failing. I lost several years worth of backup files that way, and had the misfortune of the drive failure somehow going so catastrophically wrong it killed my laptop's motherboard. PNY drives are a very ill advised purchase.
The only PNY brand anything that is still working (probably) is a 2gb micro SD card that I used for GamesNMusic for the DS Lite. Literally everything else has failed. A 2gb flash drive (I’m partially responsible for this one). GT220 1GB (fan died). 256gb 150mb/s flash drive (corrupts files, doesn’t maintain that speed past 5 seconds). A 16gb C6 SD card, and I think there was one more I can’t remember…
Not only would reinstalling Windows get rid of some bloatware but if you bought a used PC reinstalling Windows will get any spyware and malware off. This is assuming that its BIOS is not infected with Logofail or something similar that a reinstall does not get rid of. Also there are BIOS updates for Logofail. I don't know if they help at all or much but look and see if an update for your BIOS is available. Just beware that updating a BIOS is potentially risky as it can leave you stuck with a PC that will not boot or even power on. Make sure to get the one you need for your exact model and revision motherboard. Also make sure that the power is not likely to go out while you do this. It does not usually take too long. Also you may notice your computer shutting down or restarting. Just let it do its thing and keep in mind that the first boot after the update is going to take longer. Don't try to rush this!! Just let it do its thing. If you are impatient or don't like waiting just get up from the chair and go do something to pass the time. Just whatever you do give it time. Windows might download some updates too. Also watch out on Windows 11, it may download a BIOS update and restart your computer to install it. It is the same deal, don't interrupt it. Don't let it do it if the weather is bad and the power might go out. If that happens your computer might be screwed up!!

my system did this but i wasnt trying to optimizer anything. i was doing a system wipe to speed things up and windows just broke itself on the reinstall. gave up trying to fix it and downloaded linux
@@theairacobra been through a few distros to find what fits my needs and computer knowledge. i tried a few arch based distros but always ran into problems like not picking up my spare HDD and i am not ready to fix that kind of stuff. settled on mint in the end as it just works out of the box. i also duel boot zorin due to mint not recognising my turtle beech react-r controller.

You are certainly right that people are giving advice that they either don't understand themselves or advice that is very situational. But the real problem is that Microsoft doesn't provide proper documentation for a lot of Windows features and if they do it might be paywalled. So there is always a bit of voodoo involved when it comes to customizing Windows. That is just behind the time for a operating system that wants to be an "open platform". They still have a lot to learn from Linux and most likely they never will. Reinstalling Windows is the worst advice there is. If you reinstall Windows you will never learn to single out the problem and fix it. Repair your broken install and document every step. Write down every GPO or registry key, every file involved and so on. And of course if you reinstall Windows without changing anything you do you will run into the same problem again, therefore you'll have to reinstall it again at a later time. If there's bloat on your system you have to ask yourself, how did it get there? Use your computer like an intelligent person that is able to learn new things!
Well of course you won't get 'these issues' (i.e. BSOD) with linux, but you'll still have plenty of other issues. Windows, Linux, and MacOS (can't speak of FreeBSD as never really used that) are all terrible, they're just bad in different ways.
They already did that with steam machines. You can still download it and it still gets updates but isn't going to be fully optimized to your machine like it is for the steam deck.
The best optimization I did honestly was uninstalling windows and switch to Linux. But well in my case the games I play work in Linux and all my working tools also work in Linux.
I see your problem. You are using Windows. Use Linux instead. But honestly, I bought a mini-pc recently and did a fresh Windows 11 Pro install on it. I fully updated and debloated it afterwards then I just let it idle. I have several PCs so I'm just trying to see how stable this new mini-PC is. No surprise, even at idle with hardly anything installed, I still gotten a BSOD like yours after a few days. On the other hand, my Raspberry Pi4, Pi5, and another mini-PC with Linux installed has been running for months without any reboots.
The whole problem today is not the computers, it is the BS that microsoft wants you to have in your computers so your computer will only run MicroShit products. I am trying to set up an old Gateway computer now with Windows 98 or 95. Now Microshit won't let there old discarded program do anything. Because MicroShit is greedy for money, and does the computer industry an injustice by having manufactures put Microshit crap in it to control your computer. This is why other computer OS's died like the Amiga, Acorn, Atari, Macs, Commodore and other computers died, why, because Microshit has been going around the country saying make your computer to run Microshit products, since we are the up and going Software Company, Only design your products to work on Microshit, and no other computers, so now you have a choice as a Software designer choose Microshit or choose the smaller companies. I met Gates and Balmer at one time back in about the Mid 80's and those two where so overwhelmed by greed and only using MicroShit Software that I chose the Amiga with Transformer to do my work since I was a Lotus 123 spreadsheet designer and just couldn't go back to a spreadsheet like they used to use on CPM. (to me Lotus 123 surpasses all other Spreadsheets because of their Macro's) also my saying is you buy Microshit, well you just been shit on, as you will see as time passes by.
My gaming laptop performs at top 6 in performance in userbenchmark. I did extreme optimizations to get this far Specs: Ryzen 5 4600h (performs like an i5 12450h And a GTX 1650 (performs like a 3050 TI) 16gb ram 3200mhz Its pretty good for a 2021 laptop imo. Just dont get windows 11
Your first mistake was using Windows 11. Windows 10 is really the only smart choice at this point now they have forced Windows 7 into the grave. I see almost daily videos and articles of Windows 11 updates breaking people's PCs. Windows 10 used to be that way but not so much now. Windows 10 was pretty easy to 'optimize.' Second mistake, never keep valuable data in Windows drives. My data goes to a 1 TB USB SSD. My games are all on a separate 2 TB M.2 drive. Optimally, you should be on Linux, but that's a whole different topic.
DISKPART SEL DISK 1 CLEAN EXIT rebooted with a Pop!_OS USB stick... and WAM! No more updated in the middle of my business day, the network doesn't stop working while an update is pending and my AMD video card just works without any additional installation. Loving System76 right now.
I dual boot with Linux, so windows going kaput is not a problem, really. You can use a linux live USB to access your data too. Sometimes Linux actually does better with gaming performance, especially when using DXVK or some related project. But windows makes mass management of mods for games easier and has HDR support on NVIDIA cards. So I just bounce between both depending on the game that I want to play.
Don't install anything unless you know what it is, don't change settings unless you know what the changes do, don't run commands unless you know what they do. That's the best advice. There is a LOT of bad computer advice out there.
Ill take stability over hyper performance. Rather than overclocking my 14900kf ill be working to make it stable. This is also why i back up my important data.
It boggles my mind that Microsoft still insists on putting the profiles and OS on the same partition. It's not hard to fix throu audit mode, but the fact that even that is buried is dumb. People really need to move to Linux, it's easier to use and better all around.
Even if someone has absolutely no interest in using Linux as their daily driver, or even just giving it a try at all, I think it's at least worth their while to slap a Linux Mint ISO on a thumb drive and take a few minutes to familiarize themselves with how to navigate the default file browser. It'll mount your Windows partitions automatically, and will read and write to them with absolutely no issues. You can unfuck a few Windows issues from a Linux live session with basically no knowledge of Linux going into it. It's probably the easiest way to access your files when you end up with a borked Windows boot.
Unless bitlocker is enabled... Then you get to go yank keys from your TPM which is not for the feint of heart or newbie. I've been making great money on it since machines started to ship with it on.

what i did before to milk some fps off my potato windows 10 install is to completely nuke off windows defender _(now windows security i guess)_ from the recovery environment. "good" fps at the cost of security and safety in my windows install this was done before i had knowledge in "multibooting" different oses in my desktop and other things i've seen other posts online like recommending ccleaner to "clean up" your windows install which most people (i assume?) is unnecessary and does nothing to improve the system
You can install Windows on the same partition that you had on your previous system, the new Windows installation will create a new folder called windows.old. This year I went to update a firmware on an NVMe drive, "which apparently the SSD required in order to function properly (it didn't need it anyways)", and it ended up by corrupting my Windows after rebooting it. By doing it the way I said, I didn't lose any important data.
If you dont have an external drive enclosure you could also use the windows recovery console, which is really just command prompt but with extra recovery tools which you wont need for this. All connected drives are accessible so you can robocopy your entire C drive to another disk. Its a little bit more complicated, but cost nothing extra.
3 minutes in.. yeah the rabbit hole of optimizing your PC is.. well, to me, something you almost need to understand about your own personal build. You can get awry very VERY quickly.. advice online is just fine for THAT exact system and it's ok to take it with the knowledge that you can't specifically clone things someone else's system likes, you aren't going to have exactly the same everything. PCs are like fingerprints, even 2 cloned systems are going to have different quirks that, well, I can't even explain.. and messing with Windows services and getting deep into the advanced menus, you really REALLY need to understand what does what, how it's connected to everything else - and oh man, services for one thing may have a MASSIVE effect on other services or controls.. Yeah.. easy does it and BACKUP your system with an image (if you can) before you really start digging deep under the hood. Good advice here.. reduce bloat. The less memory and cpu being used, the better the performance you'll see. No questions about that. But LEARN about what does what before you just open task manager and just start killing things!!! You'd be surprised what you'll learn about Microsoft.

Yeah it's tough it takes time, knowledge, experience.. also you do kind of have to be prepared to mess things up, that's why i do a clone of my c drive any time i do any major messing around. I also have a 256gb nvme for my os drive and don't install anything else to that drive. It makes life a lot simpler if you have the means, don't put anything unnecessary on your boot drive.
@@AnthonyRBlacker well I partition my 1TB NVME drives, but I used to administer server systems. Totally agree putting just small apps/utilities in C: and rest on another disk splits the user profiles from the main things, while keeping C: small and easy to backup. When I find problems it's usually because people accidentally installed unnecessary security software.

In old days of interned there was hi change to get wrong answers/tips from IRC. Basically they had knowledge but sometimes they give someone bad answers just for fun. So internet hasn't changed.
Being a retired Electronics and Computer Engineer going back before PC's back to old school mainframes, any software solutions to get performance upgrades vs hardware upgrades generally do not work. Some may remember compressing storage drives instead of just upgrading or adding storage. File encryption is a much safer option than drive encryption and for me, never encrypt the OS. Good advice to kill all the bloat and unnecessary operations in the background. This is why I run Linux. That is why the only Windows machine I have is for working on projects and games that just will not run on Linux. I still keep up to date on tech and work a little on the side. Good video.
You know what I find crazy is them people who use them Debloat scripts and don't know nothing about what it does or change, sure it disableds things and uninstalls things, but often times they go out of their way to change things and breaks the OS, if not immediately but will later when something doesn't update, or some weird issue. And they don't help much anyway, Disable crap in the startup and uninstall the preinstalled garbage and leave it be.
I watch youtube vids on an old laptop in my kitchen running windows 10 that started getting too unacceptably slow. My tweek to getting a little more life... was to install Ubuntu. That has worked for the last two years but now I think its time is done.
You not only made you laptop live for longer, you actually upgraded to a much better system! If you still want to get more life out of that laptop, you might want to replace your desktop enviroment with something lighter. Lubuntu is a lightweight spin of Ubuntu on the LXQt dekstop enviroment, it's super easy on your resources.
if you have already installed linux, it's easier to modify it instead of fresh install. No need to install lubuntu. Just find out what you don't like (which might be let's say snap), and get rid of them, or stop services
Ha, never thought of even looking for this kind of shit. I build the system and do the bios settings so all the hardware works as it should. Install windows and drivers, that's it. I don't mess with overclocking or whatever. The only optimization I use is Nvidia in-game settings if needed. Why mess with stuff that can brick your hardware if you have no clue what are you doing. As well start coding your own OS, bios and drivers for hardware if you are at it. XD
exactly. It's a bad idea to edit registry without knowledge what settings are responsible for. Bad idea to change services without good knowledge what services are essential, and which not. And so on
I have never once borked a machine by changing a setting. At least not one I couldn't fix by changing the registry and rebooting. Never have I made a configuration change or software setting that caused a machine to enter repair or require reloading windows(or worse). It has only ever come from hardware failures and I only did so for testing purposes. Not saying I'm smarter or better than anyone else. I'm just old. I have a lot of experience. Most of the tweaks I see in videos, be it security improvements or graphics, I see and say mmm yeah no-that would not be smart. I have about 24 years of experience. It is extremely rare for me to see a massive performance increase. At least for graphics, honestly most of the time it is the intricate per-application settings that yield that most results. Often times found in a configuration file for the application that has settings not accessible in the game menus. Have adequate cooling. Don't have bottlenecks. Don't run crap you don't need. Those are the main things. Do I need to say the other obvious one? I'm going to. Don't have crap internet(which includes buying a cheap router or using one provided by your internet provider). Okay, I'm out. Good luck folks. Oh, one caveat. Way back when, there was a windows update that fubar'd my computer one time. Hah, that was the one time I had to redo my pc. Just remembered. Gotta love Microsoft. To their credit they fixed it relatively quickly. Wasn't a big deal. I reloaded without a cat cable plugged in. Disabled the particular update. Back to being golden.
You have to keep in mind gamers are gamers: they rarely have any sort of technical bent or insight into how their computers actually work. They're actually an example of Dunning-Kruger Effect, hence why they fall for all these "punch these numbers into Regedit and you'll get 10^9 fps!" videos in the first place - so of course have no idea how to undo them.
If you want important documents safe, why would you use Windows? Just switch to Linux, it's far more supportive than it used to be, and has always been more safer.
Technically, every "upgrade" since Vista is a reinstall. Up until then, a reinstall just burped the new version's files on top of the old ones (hence why you would end up with old Windows utilities like Cardfile and Object Packager floating around your Windows directory). Now your old version gets moved to Windows.old, an entirely new OS is installed, and settings are copied over through a utility called User State Migration Tool.
I went to reinstall Windows 11. Created the USB. Boot from the USB... Microsoft reports my PC can't run Windows 11...the OS it is already running. Windows is weird.
Your best improvement is to get rid of things you don't need and get system idle down (my game rig is 1%): If you don't need it, uninstall it\ set to 'manual' start ('manual' start in services is safer than 'disable', if something tries to start a 'disabled' service, it will most likely BSOD). Not every suggestion is going to work for you, so revert any "none improvement". Q1 Ask yourself the question "can I restore if it all goes wrong?". Q2 The other question to ask is "am I GPU bound or CPU bound?" and if you don't know the difference, don't even start tinkering because you may be wasting your time.

I would say that using Macs can bring potentially more troubles than a normy pc/laptop. I recently installed ubuntu on some old macbook, it took a lot of efforts and time to find a working loader (refind) and a proper linux distro that would work right from installation without need to search some proprietary soft for wifi some ppl complain about ubuntu, but this laptop is now flying with it, compared how it was with its MacOS v.10.10 this migration to linux might be even more tricky for modern mac computers, who knows
Just tried Garuda Linux 2 days ago, it's insanely fast, a super old and slow 5400 rpm HDD was basically flying and starting games up faster than games in my SSD. Also it's so free of bloat and useless stuff that it more than DOUBLED my FPS across all games I tested. Insane stuff man. Also, that OS is SOOOO beautiful. I'm only staying on windows because I do a lot of windows-specific stuff that don't work on Linux even through wine.
(1) no we don't do permission change to damaged drive we use windows PE (2) we don't disable windows services, we install windows LTSC (3) use greenware and don't install software unless you needed to (4) do not edit HIVE REGISTRY. no one edit the startup list nowadays (5) keep one copy of working drivers set, and do download new version to keep them in HDD. try to use windows default drivers until one day there's problem, then you pull those drivers backup to use

Clone the hard drive . You will need a TH-cam guide, a clone zilla os usb boot drive, a hard drive big enough and a usb 3 to sata or an usb to nvme enclosure.
This is why as a former windows user do not optimize my PC as it has lots of risks and I would rather have 80% of performance than have my personal stuff get removed. Why former windows user you say? I am a linux user if you are wondering.
I have a solution, Microsoft needs to stop flooding installed with garbage apps, background processes, and increasing telemetry with AI. We wouldn’t need to make tweaks to such deep system objects if Microsoft did a good job with their OS.
@@StellaEFZ to an extent, if more companies supported it with native programs like Adobe and even Microsoft, I bet the adoption would go higher. Windows is still easier for most folks simply due to familiarity, that’s also why Microsoft gets away with bloating the system up with trackers, ai, and ads, people often aren’t savvy enough to even question it in my experience.

golden rule .... ALWAYS BACKUP ... i been a victim of performance scam, I did spot the issue but thnking i was a wise ass even I could not get out of it ... which did destroy an install and I been in IT for over 35 years as a professional enginner even us long term tech guys get caught out but keeping a pendrive with recovery and regular backup is a must.. there is peaople out there that want to hurt you or your hardware because they love the power they feel .. good video ... also keeping multiple drive helps with exporting ... dont store essential files on the local install .. BIG MISTAKE just essential apos ,ect everything else re route to other drives not even on same drive partitions incase it screws up the os drive
Not bad. Aside from pulling the drive from the system and recovering your data from another Windows machine (assuming you don't have encryption like you appropriately mentioned), if there isn't another Windows PC nearby, you can always download one of the many PE variants and create a bootable flash drive to boot to a mini-Windows to access your data as well. You could also just delete the Windows directories (carefully) and re-load windows without having to wait to copy the data to and from another drive. Not to mention, you can also just re-install Windows and simply not format the drive which will simply place all your data into a 'windows.old' directory where you can just cut and move the data that way, too. As far as reducing bloat to increase system performance - one of the worst offenders is Microsoft Defender (*cough* Garbage *cough*). Windows Defender noticably reduces performance, doesn't stop most viruses/malware/PuPs, etc. and on the same note it has a habit of deleting legitimate files that aren't offensive to your system (false positives). MS Defender might as well BE the virus. I absolutely despise it. Get a good AV and trash that complete joke that calls itself protection! The only problem (unfortunately) - you have to do it the hard way and it isn't easy to do for those who aren't savvy. I use PE to delete the handful of Defender Folders and then use the "Windows Defender Uninstaller" @ Raymond.cc. It's important to note that, while this works wonders for Windows Vista through 10, Windows 11 doesn't like it to the point that it won't let you run Windows updates after you do this. If you don't care about MS updates (some will even break your machine so it doesn't bother me, but...), then all the more power to ya.

the thing i think happens as well is the people following these guides are inexperienced with them. maybe even just built their own pc and dont know that you can only overclock a pc to a certain extent before you end up doing this. knew someone who got a crypto miner that would take a lot of resources. so it ended up turning the pc off as it exceeded what it could do. each time they turned it on it turned back off. its not bad to follow a guide but before you overclock or whatever else you should look into the stuff they are doing to see what each thing is doing for your pc as well as what your pc can take/doesnt need active for it to actually run. though i feel that is part of the fun. figuring out what works just right for you and your system.

System optimization has been my job for 10 years. Windows xp/dos/95/98/vista/7. Softwarewise. It would really help people out, making systems more stable and faster. So apart from adding more memory or installing a new hdd with a clean install, you couldn't really do much about its slowness; no SSD drives existed. So... Software tweaking it was.

I have not kept my data on the boot drive for over 20 years. With drives being so affordable, there is no reason not to have separate data/gaming drives. You can move your documents folder to a drive other than C:\. This lessens the stress of rebuilding your boot drive.

also i keep windows on its own drive and install evey thing i can on the D drive that way i can reset windows and only loose like winrar and some drivers
I use all the variety of affordable these days storage media, which include:
1. SSD as a primary system, data workflow drive.
2. Compact memory cards for their reasonable price and compact size ) - they are use for some rarely used files/archives/finished projects whatsoever.
and 3. HDDs for a long-term data storage, backups, and for their best price per TB.
Nothing, even old HDDs are wasted, they just used for extra backup
Yea, learned this quick myself when I used to use Windows as my main OS. Now I'm using Linux and still does this. It makes restoring your data much easier if your personal files are separated from the main OS drive.

Same here, I came from years of using Amiga's with hard drives like the 2000's and 4000's to the PC in the early 90's, and always kept the workbench drive clear of apps and the BBS I was running, so was used it to keeping things separate, this is something UNIX and Linux has always got right but where windows has always fallen on its face ...
Reminds me of the back in the 90s 'joke' advice to delete a certain system file. I did so having backed up the system, thinking I could recover, being PC savvy, and had to reinstall all my files from backup, losing hours.
just delete the folder "system32" in your "Windows" folder. This is where Windows stores all of it's bloated and useless components (as well as all the necessary ones too, for those that don't get the joke)

When you're as old a user as I am, you learn to stick with vanilla settings in your registry. Here's a good rule of thumb: Anything that requires you to go into a scary looking menu you never seen before during normal use of your Windows is probably a bad idea. Save yourself a lot of headaches and quit while you're ahead.
Linux and Mac both have poweruser prizes at the end of those scary menus and very little risk if any to the system. It’s specially a windows trap to tinker, and indeed it seems to be intentionally designed to punish you for trying to use your own system. So Windows software is as locked down as Mac hardware, but in some great irony it seems that Mac OS is far harder to break via tinkering, whereas one single change in WIndows registry can bork your entire system immediately.
When you're as old a PC Tech as I am, you learn exactly what settings in your Registry to change to get Windoze out of the "Middle of the Road" into the Fast Lane‼️

@@ghost-user559 when my ssd failed thanks to the seller using a fake ssd i was using certain commands in MacOS and it would always say not to do it if you weren't experienced in it. There seems to be a lot of these tech videos on what to do to speed up or enhance your computer experience and it always ends up with damage to the system, even something as basic as getting an external microphone to work on MacOS is difficult to follow with these youtube videos because they state a whole lot of nothing or just inaccurate techniques that don't work especially on the retina macbooks.
@@ColinsCity Yeah I have gone down the rabbit hole for tinkering with different systems. I like that MacOS warns you, but so far I have never actually broken anything by changing anything on my Mac. Windows doesn’t warn you, and even a simple change can be very difficult and wreak havoc on your system. The one exception in MacOS is “permissions”. Don’t ever change them lol. That’s the only time I ever actually had to reinstall because the system was locked out of access to my drive. So as long as you don’t change permissions for files you don’t have a good understanding of, you should not run into any issues.
That is why today I use Linux and Amiga Emulators on my computers. They work excellent, and if you are into data basing well Amiga has some excellent do everything data bases.
I have a 3 prong approach to taming windows. 1. Disable anything non-essential from startup, 2. uninstall any software that you do not use anymore, and 3. REBOOT YOUR MACHINE AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK. With the last being the *easiest* solution to a ridiculous amount of weird system behavior, and for some reason is the one thing that nobody ever wants to do.

@@analogicparadox You mean, you "do" shut down your computer daily? Haven't shutdown a single PC I've owned since I started building them, and that was about 20 years ago. I shut them down for a good cleaning every 6 months, and that's about it.
That's what power profiles are for. Like each time you start a car, each time you start your computer, is where the most damage is done, especially if you still use spinning HDDs. Repeated thermal expansion and contraction of the CPU and GPU die, is also something to consider.
But, to each their own. Do what you will with your own property. 👍
starting up/down for computer is not the same as for a car. Computer cpu/gpu and in less extent also memory and other components are much more stressed under heavy load/idle cycle than start up/shut down cycle. Spinning up HDDs is also not valid any more cause manufacturers made this cycle count end of life quite significant. HDDs still die, and may die any moment, but there is no confirmation that any moderate load or frequent (like every 10 min) spinning up/down cycle decreases the life expectation.
HDDs are still the primary data storage. And if someone doesn't use it, then it's highly likely that person just doesn't count money
You shouldn't be running a computer for 24 hours without a reboot, ever. A week is fucken ridiculous, how lazy do you gotta be to go to the menu and restart the damn pc....
The biggest mistake ppl make is to store personal files on the system disk.
Hard-/sym-linking files and folders to a different drive probably is a bit intimidating to some and takes some getting used to, but it's worth it.
It reduces a broken Windows install from a catastrophe to the annoyance of having to set up a new system when you hadn't planned on spending time on it.
i would say most who do this mistakes don't know what hard-/sym-linking is. Maybe they dont even try it out on a virtual machine first.
@@STCatchMeTRACjRoProbably, but Windows actually has that functionality built-in now, at least for the default folders. Ppl can relocate their files without having to install tools or understand what's going on under the hood. Moving their documents and pictures folders etc to an inexpensive StorageSpaces array could prevent a worst case scenario for most. Even the cases of most pre-built systems have room for a cost effective solution like e.g. two 2.5" Intenso SSDs. It's frustrating to see so many ppl willing to spend time tinkering with Win components but not spare a few thoughts and maybe 50 bucks to protect their data.
The best solution would be to invest in Network Attached Storage. You can buy complete solutions like Synology or QNAP or set it up yourself using an old computer, a couple of hard drives and a free and open source NAS operating system called TrueNAS. It is a lot safer and more durable than any single disk that's in an actively used PC where something can go wrong. And you can access this storage from any machine in your network! Even your smartphone.

It's had that ability for a long, LONG time - I think it was added to Properties in Windows XP, and before that, you just changed some registry entries.
That is why I use a USB stick, I save all my stuff on it. and keep their cloud EMPTY, and their drawers in the shit bin Other wise MicroSoft and other companies steal your bit buckets.

Like actually call phone numbers in phishing e-mail, or follow instructions from spam pop-ups.

You cannot fix stupid and you cannot make a computer idiot proof. The ONLY way they will learn is by being burned dozens of times.
And yes some very intelligent and thoughtful friends and family have been burned time and time again.

BUT people learn be DOING and by EXPERIENCE.... and most will only learn AFTER they have been screwed. (And some not even then)
This is the consequence of giving the masses an easy access to computers with easy GUIs and no knowledge required. Back in the DOS or early Linux days you had to really know what you're doing to use a computer. Of course, overall accesibility is a good thing and I am not trying to gatekeep computing. But it's undeniable that most PC users lack basic skills because they never had to learn them. And in the end it comes back to bite them in the ass. We should educate people more.

Most people in my generation and before were ever curious how things worked and how can I get this thing to do other stuff that maybe it was not designed to do. The best advice to increase performance is just to disable telemetry
Sadly you can only disable some stuff, but a lot of telemetry is locked in and you can't change that. The only solution is to switch to an open source operating system that actually respects it's users.
Another thing you can do to access a borked system is get a Linux image on a USB stick and boot into that, in case you only have one PC. Once you've backed up the data you can then reinstall windows, or just install Linux if you want to move away from Microsoft's spyware of an OS.
The very first thing I do with a new computer, is boot into Linux and make an image of the hard disk for "out of box experience". Now THAT is a re-install!

Start with installing Linux on the System,
then install Winderz in a Virtual Machine.
I used to call it "Cocooning".
That way, when Winderz inevitably Borked itself, you only had to go back to the Last good Snapshot and you're back to "Normal" in a few minutes.
@@PaulHawkins Yes. Snapshots are *amazing* . I use Oracle Virtual Box for the same benefit; but a host running QEMU or similar is the same but less vulnerable to Stuff. As it happens, Linux can shapshot itself if you are using the LVM, Logical Volume Manager, which is handy just in case an update causes a big malfunction which sometimes is the case. You update a library and kaboom, fourteen processes that depended on it suddenly fail.
You're 2 years out of luck - Windows 11 encrypts the boot drives of your system now by default, so if your OS is corrupt, your only solution is to buy a new computer, as you probably lost your Windows key, as well
If you reinstalling Windows, check if you have programs that you need to "unregister" them (usually professional applications) or you might be stuck working with their tech support for days to get them registered again.

Also, I must admit, that I find it hilarious, every time (and it happens regularly) I see / hear someone complain about "extremely bad performance", on what SHOULD be a top spec PC, because of too much tinkering with "optimizations". The following is actually a TRUE experience!! Not long ago, a fellow Flight-simmer, with a pretty nice rig (Ryzen 7 7800 3D, 32 gigs of DDR5 ram, and a RTX 4080), had WORSE performance in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020, than I have with my (pretty much) Meh, Ryzen 5 4600G, 32 gigs of DDR4 and RTX 2060. The difference? First of : Even though his settings were different than mine, they were actually not THAT different!! He basically ran MSFS in 1080 and upscaled it, and only had marginally higher LOD settings etc. than me, since he prefers performance over "overblown cosmetics" (as he puts it). Anyway. Don't use Windows to recover data off a drive that came out of a Windows system. The take ownership of files requirement is a dumb Windows limitation. Instead boot to a Linux distro, like Linux Mint for instance and you can copy files directly without having to run any scripts.

Four minutes into a 9 1/2 minute video and this guy tells me that he destroyed his PC, yet he can’t even describe what he did. Sounds like his methodology is the problem. Are you trying to avoid upgrading your CPU, your RAM, your storage solution, or GPU. If you write down all the steps involved, and what end result you’re expecting to get without having a rollback plan, then no one can help you unless you’re willing to pay tech-support a lot of money. Better to not start messing with things until you’ve played in a virtual machine and understand how system components affect each other.
You should not be messing around in the registry or disabling windows services for optimization.
Chris Titus tool does this but only disables services that won't brick your system. That's how I went from 5-10% cpu idle to 0 on my 3600

The only thing I really don't like about a fresh windows install instead of upgrading is that I have so many things installed that I need to reinstall from scratch. Especially since it's my daily driver for years now.
I know that feeling. Later on you will learn to backup all your important files and restore them on a freshly installed OS. 😅 If you try to learn Linux and switch to it, it is surprisingly easier to manage (depending on your distro) and reinstalling your apps again as Linux uses app repos (kind of like Google Playstore) and you don't have to hunt for apps on different websites or accidentally install a malware.

I can't remember the last time that a package was malware, the only thing that comes to mind is the Linux Mint website being hacked and having the iso changed to a version with a backdoor in like 2016.

I also am among that group that keeps data on a separate drive from the Windows drive. Regardless, I had to replace two SSDs in the past year. Both were PNY 500GB drives, and both failed, so my trust in that brand has dropped quite a bit. Reinstalling Windows was a pain, but there was minimal loss of information, because everything important was on a second drive, which itself is backed up to another drive. So much data - so few drives.
Sounds more like an issue with your storage choice than where your data is. PNY is a cheapo brand bottom of the barrel.
I've kept a lot of my data on the boot drive ever since I owned a PC. Never had a failure. Even my old 6gb WD Caviar that ran for 15 years still works today.
Yeah, PNY drives are really prone to failure. IIRC, the controller chipsets meant to improve the lifespan of the drives do the opposite, and are usually the root cause of the SSD failing. I lost several years worth of backup files that way, and had the misfortune of the drive failure somehow going so catastrophically wrong it killed my laptop's motherboard. PNY drives are a very ill advised purchase.
The only PNY brand anything that is still working (probably) is a 2gb micro SD card that I used for GamesNMusic for the DS Lite. Literally everything else has failed. A 2gb flash drive (I’m partially responsible for this one). GT220 1GB (fan died). 256gb 150mb/s flash drive (corrupts files, doesn’t maintain that speed past 5 seconds). A 16gb C6 SD card, and I think there was one more I can’t remember…
Not only would reinstalling Windows get rid of some bloatware but if you bought a used PC reinstalling Windows will get any spyware and malware off. This is assuming that its BIOS is not infected with Logofail or something similar that a reinstall does not get rid of. Also there are BIOS updates for Logofail. I don't know if they help at all or much but look and see if an update for your BIOS is available. Just beware that updating a BIOS is potentially risky as it can leave you stuck with a PC that will not boot or even power on. Make sure to get the one you need for your exact model and revision motherboard. Also make sure that the power is not likely to go out while you do this. It does not usually take too long. Also you may notice your computer shutting down or restarting. Just let it do its thing and keep in mind that the first boot after the update is going to take longer. Don't try to rush this!! Just let it do its thing. If you are impatient or don't like waiting just get up from the chair and go do something to pass the time. Just whatever you do give it time. Windows might download some updates too. Also watch out on Windows 11, it may download a BIOS update and restart your computer to install it. It is the same deal, don't interrupt it. Don't let it do it if the weather is bad and the power might go out. If that happens your computer might be screwed up!!

You are certainly right that people are giving advice that they either don't understand themselves or advice that is very situational. But the real problem is that Microsoft doesn't provide proper documentation for a lot of Windows features and if they do it might be paywalled. So there is always a bit of voodoo involved when it comes to customizing Windows. That is just behind the time for a operating system that wants to be an "open platform". They still have a lot to learn from Linux and most likely they never will.
Reinstalling Windows is the worst advice there is. If you reinstall Windows you will never learn to single out the problem and fix it. Repair your broken install and document every step. Write down every GPO or registry key, every file involved and so on. And of course if you reinstall Windows without changing anything you do you will run into the same problem again, therefore you'll have to reinstall it again at a later time. If there's bloat on your system you have to ask yourself, how did it get there? Use your computer like an intelligent person that is able to learn new things!

Well of course you won't get 'these issues' (i.e. BSOD) with linux, but you'll still have plenty of other issues. Windows, Linux, and MacOS (can't speak of FreeBSD as never really used that) are all terrible, they're just bad in different ways.

But honestly, I bought a mini-pc recently and did a fresh Windows 11 Pro install on it. I fully updated and debloated it afterwards then I just let it idle. I have several PCs so I'm just trying to see how stable this new mini-PC is. No surprise, even at idle with hardly anything installed, I still gotten a BSOD like yours after a few days. On the other hand, my Raspberry Pi4, Pi5, and another mini-PC with Linux installed has been running for months without any reboots.

The whole problem today is not the computers, it is the BS that microsoft wants you to have in your computers so your computer will only run MicroShit products. I am trying to set up an old Gateway computer now with Windows 98 or 95. Now Microshit won't let there old discarded program do anything. Because MicroShit is greedy for money, and does the computer industry an injustice by having manufactures put Microshit crap in it to control your computer. This is why other computer OS's died like the Amiga, Acorn, Atari, Macs, Commodore and other computers died, why, because Microshit has been going around the country saying make your computer to run Microshit products, since we are the up and going Software Company, Only design your products to work on Microshit, and no other computers, so now you have a choice as a Software designer choose Microshit or choose the smaller companies. Your first mistake was using Windows 11. Windows 10 is really the only smart choice at this point now they have forced Windows 7 into the grave. I see almost daily videos and articles of Windows 11 updates breaking people's PCs. Windows 10 used to be that way but not so much now. Windows 10 was pretty easy to 'optimize.'
Second mistake, never keep valuable data in Windows drives. My data goes to a 1 TB USB SSD. My games are all on a separate 2 TB M.2 drive.
Optimally, you should be on Linux, but that's a whole different topic.

I dual boot with Linux, so windows going kaput is not a problem, really. You can use a linux live USB to access your data too.
Sometimes Linux actually does better with gaming performance, especially when using DXVK or some related project. But windows makes mass management of mods for games easier and has HDR support on NVIDIA cards.
So I just bounce between both depending on the game that I want to play.
Don't install anything unless you know what it is, don't change settings unless you know what the changes do, don't run commands unless you know what they do. That's the best advice. There is a LOT of bad computer advice out there.
Ill take stability over hyper performance. Rather than overclocking my 14900kf ill be working to make it stable. This is also why i back up my important data.

It boggles my mind that Microsoft still insists on putting the profiles and OS on the same partition. It's not hard to fix throu audit mode, but the fact that even that is buried is dumb. People really need to move to Linux, it's easier to use and better all around.

Even if someone has absolutely no interest in using Linux as their daily driver, or even just giving it a try at all, I think it's at least worth their while to slap a Linux Mint ISO on a thumb drive and take a few minutes to familiarize themselves with how to navigate the default file browser. It'll mount your Windows partitions automatically, and will read and write to them with absolutely no issues. You can unfuck a few Windows issues from a Linux live session with basically no knowledge of Linux going into it. It's probably the easiest way to access your files when you end up with a borked Windows boot.
Unless bitlocker is enabled... Then you get to go yank keys from your TPM which is not for the feint of heart or newbie. I've been making great money on it since machines started to ship with it on.
Just use Linux if you want a lightweight OS.

what i did before to milk some fps off my potato windows 10 install is to completely nuke off windows defender _(now windows security i guess)_ from the recovery environment. "good" fps at the cost of security and safety in my windows install

i've seen other posts online like recommending ccleaner to "clean up" your windows install which most people (i assume?) is unnecessary and does nothing to improve the system
You can install Windows on the same partition that you had on your previous system, the new Windows installation will create a new folder called windows.old. This year I went to update a firmware on an NVMe drive, "which apparently the SSD required in order to function properly (it didn't need it anyways)", and it ended up by corrupting my Windows after rebooting it.
By doing it the way I said, I didn't lose any important data.
To access the data on your drive, just run a disc boot able version of xp and access the drive and transfer all of your data onto an external.

If you dont have an external drive enclosure you could also use the windows recovery console, which is really just command prompt but with extra recovery tools which you wont need for this. All connected drives are accessible so you can robocopy your entire C drive to another disk.
Its a little bit more complicated, but cost nothing extra.

3 minutes in.. yeah the rabbit hole of optimizing your PC is.. well, to me, something you almost need to understand about your own personal build. You can get awry very VERY quickly.. advice online is just fine for THAT exact system and it's ok to take it with the knowledge that you can't specifically clone things someone else's system likes, you aren't going to have exactly the same everything. PCs are like fingerprints, even 2 cloned systems are going to have different quirks that, well, I can't even explain.. and messing with Windows services and getting deep into the advanced menus, you really REALLY need to understand what does what, how it's connected to everything else - and oh man, services for one thing may have a MASSIVE effect on other services or controls.. Yeah.. easy does it and BACKUP your system with an image (if you can) before you really start digging deep under the hood. Good advice here.. reduce bloat. The less memory and cpu being used, the better the performance you'll see. No questions about that. But LEARN about what does what before you just open task manager and just start killing things!!! You'd be surprised what you'll learn about Microsoft.

@@AnthonyRBlacker well I partition my 1TB NVME drives, but I used to administer server systems. Totally agree putting just small apps/utilities in C: and rest on another disk splits the user profiles from the main things, while keeping C: small and easy to backup.

In old days of interned there was hi change to get wrong answers/tips from IRC. Basically they had knowledge but sometimes they give someone bad answers just for fun. So internet hasn't changed.
Being a retired Electronics and Computer Engineer going back before PC's back to old school mainframes, any software solutions to get performance upgrades vs hardware upgrades generally do not work. Some may remember compressing storage drives instead of just upgrading or adding storage. File encryption is a much safer option than drive encryption and for me, never encrypt the OS. Good advice to kill all the bloat and unnecessary operations in the background. This is why I run Linux. That is why the only Windows machine I have is for working on projects and games that just will not run on Linux. I still keep up to date on tech and work a little on the side. Good video.

You know what I find crazy is them people who use them Debloat scripts and don't know nothing about what it does or change, sure it disableds things and uninstalls things, but often times they go out of their way to change things and breaks the OS, if not immediately but will later when something doesn't update, or some weird issue. And they don't help much anyway, Disable crap in the startup and uninstall the preinstalled garbage and leave it be.
I watch youtube vids on an old laptop in my kitchen running windows 10 that started getting too unacceptably slow. My tweek to getting a little more life... was to install Ubuntu. That has worked for the last two years but now I think its time is done.
You not only made you laptop live for longer, you actually upgraded to a much better system! If you still want to get more life out of that laptop, you might want to replace your desktop enviroment with something lighter. Lubuntu is a lightweight spin of Ubuntu on the LXQt dekstop enviroment, it's super easy on your resources.
if you have already installed linux, it's easier to modify it instead of fresh install. No need to install lubuntu. Just find out what you don't like (which might be let's say snap), and get rid of them, or stop services
Ha, never thought of even looking for this kind of shit. I build the system and do the bios settings so all the hardware works as it should. Install windows and drivers, that's it. I don't mess with overclocking or whatever. The only optimization I use is Nvidia in-game settings if needed. Why mess with stuff that can brick your hardware if you have no clue what are you doing. As well start coding your own OS, bios and drivers for hardware if you are at it. XD
exactly. It's a bad idea to edit registry without knowledge what settings are responsible for. Bad idea to change services without good knowledge what services are essential, and which not. And so on
I have never once borked a machine by changing a setting. At least not one I couldn't fix by changing the registry and rebooting. Never have I made a configuration change or software setting that caused a machine to enter repair or require reloading windows(or worse). It has only ever come from hardware failures and I only did so for testing purposes. Not saying I'm smarter or better than anyone else. I'm just old. I have a lot of experience. Most of the tweaks I see in videos, be it security improvements or graphics, I see and say mmm yeah no-that would not be smart. I have about 24 years of experience. It is extremely rare for me to see a massive performance increase. At least for graphics, honestly most of the time it is the intricate per-application settings that yield that most results. Often times found in a configuration file for the application that has settings not accessible in the game menus.
Have adequate cooling. Don't have bottlenecks. Don't run crap you don't need. Those are the main things. Do I need to say the other obvious one? I'm going to. Don't have crap internet(which includes buying a cheap router or using one provided by your internet provider). Okay, I'm out. Good luck folks.
Oh, one caveat. Way back when, there was a windows update that fubar'd my computer one time. Hah, that was the one time I had to redo my pc. Just remembered. Gotta love Microsoft. To their credit they fixed it relatively quickly. Wasn't a big deal. I reloaded without a cat cable plugged in. Disabled the particular update. Back to being golden.
You have to keep in mind gamers are gamers: they rarely have any sort of technical bent or insight into how their computers actually work. They're actually an example of Dunning-Kruger Effect, hence why they fall for all these "punch these numbers into Regedit and you'll get 10^9 fps!" videos in the first place - so of course have no idea how to undo them.

Hiren's USB is a useful tool for situations like this if you don't have an extra pc to access the files, and it's pretty easy to make too.
If you want important documents safe, why would you use Windows? Just switch to Linux, it's far more supportive than it used to be, and has always been more safer.

I haven't reinstalled windows 10 since ive built it in late 2017. It has always been snappy and never had issues. Always update too.
Technically, every "upgrade" since Vista is a reinstall. Up until then, a reinstall just burped the new version's files on top of the old ones (hence why you would end up with old Windows utilities like Cardfile and Object Packager floating around your Windows directory). Now your old version gets moved to Windows.old, an entirely new OS is installed, and settings are copied over through a utility called User State Migration Tool.

Your best improvement is to get rid of things you don't need and get system idle down (my game rig is 1%): If you don't need it, uninstall it\ set to 'manual' start ('manual' start in services is safer than 'disable', if something tries to start a 'disabled' service, it will most likely BSOD). Not every suggestion is going to work for you, so revert any "none improvement".
Q1 Ask yourself the question "can I restore if it all goes wrong?".
Q2 The other question to ask is "am I GPU bound or CPU bound?" and if you don't know the difference, don't even start tinkering because you may be wasting your time.

Windows Update recently disabled some things which led to boot loops and BSODs. Most PC users would not have been able to recover from this.
haha many ppl don't even know what is bios/uefi cause unlike in older times many manufacturers don't even show any menu/boot options )

I would say that using Macs can bring potentially more troubles than a normy pc/laptop. I recently installed ubuntu on some old macbook, it took a lot of efforts and time to find a working loader (refind) and a proper linux distro that would work right from installation without need to search some proprietary soft for wifi
some ppl complain about ubuntu, but this laptop is now flying with it, compared how it was with its MacOS v.10.10
this migration to linux might be even more tricky for modern mac computers, who knows

Just tried Garuda Linux 2 days ago, it's insanely fast, a super old and slow 5400 rpm HDD was basically flying and starting games up faster than games in my SSD. Also it's so free of bloat and useless stuff that it more than DOUBLED my FPS across all games I tested. Insane stuff man. Also, that OS is SOOOO beautiful. I'm only staying on windows because I do a lot of windows-specific stuff that don't work on Linux even through wine.
(1) no we don't do permission change to damaged drive we use windows PE
(2) we don't disable windows services, we install windows LTSC
(3) use greenware and don't install software unless you needed to
(4) do not edit HIVE REGISTRY. no one edit the startup list nowadays
(5) keep one copy of working drivers set, and do download new version to keep them in HDD. try to use windows default drivers until one day there's problem, then you pull those drivers backup to use
Windows user skill issue
Bad registry hack or damaged service can be repaired. So saying can't recover is lying
Most people Dunning-Kruger enough to blindly follow an TH-cam video that tells them to dump random entries into their registry have no idea how to use a backup program, Windows RE, or a recovery disc/USB.

You suggest to reinstall the system every 18 months. How do you safe and restore the installed programs and its settings?
Clone the hard drive . You will need a TH-cam guide, a clone zilla os usb boot drive, a hard drive big enough and a usb 3 to sata or an usb to nvme enclosure.
This is why as a former windows user do not optimize my PC as it has lots of risks and I would rather have 80% of performance than have my personal stuff get removed. Why former windows user you say? I am a linux user if you are wondering.

I have a solution, Microsoft needs to stop flooding installed with garbage apps, background processes, and increasing telemetry with AI.
We wouldn’t need to make tweaks to such deep system objects if Microsoft did a good job with their OS.

Windows is still easier for most folks simply due to familiarity, that’s also why Microsoft gets away with bloating the system up with trackers, ai, and ads, people often aren’t savvy enough to even question it in my experience.

golden rule .... ALWAYS BACKUP ... i been a victim of performance scam, I did spot the issue but thnking i was a wise ass even I could not get out of it ... which did destroy an install and I been in IT for over 35 years as a professional enginner even us long term tech guys get caught out but keeping a pendrive with recovery and regular backup is a must.. there is peaople out there that want to hurt you or your hardware because they love the power they feel .. good video ... also keeping multiple drive helps with exporting ... dont store essential files on the local install .. BIG MISTAKE just essential apos ,ect everything else re route to other drives not even on same drive partitions incase it screws up the os drive
Not bad. Aside from pulling the drive from the system and recovering your data from another Windows machine (assuming you don't have encryption like you appropriately mentioned), if there isn't another Windows PC nearby, you can always download one of the many PE variants and create a bootable flash drive to boot to a mini-Windows to access your data as well. You could also just delete the Windows directories (carefully) and re-load windows without having to wait to copy the data to and from another drive. Not to mention, you can also just re-install Windows and simply not format the drive which will simply place all your data into a 'windows.old' directory where you can just cut and move the data that way, too.
As far as reducing bloat to increase system performance - one of the worst offenders is Microsoft Defender (*cough* Garbage *cough*). Windows Defender noticably reduces performance, doesn't stop most viruses/malware/PuPs, etc. and on the same note it has a habit of deleting legitimate files that aren't offensive to your system (false positives). MS Defender might as well BE the virus. I absolutely despise it. Get a good AV and trash that complete joke that calls itself protection! The only problem (unfortunately) - you have to do it the hard way and it isn't easy to do for those who aren't savvy. I use PE to delete the handful of Defender Folders and then use the "Windows Defender Uninstaller" @ Raymond.cc. It's important to note that, while this works wonders for Windows Vista through 10, Windows 11 doesn't like it to the point that it won't let you run Windows updates after you do this. If you don't care about MS updates (some will even break your machine so it doesn't bother me, but...), then all the more power to ya.
