That's pretty much the story of any time the Imperium meets anything on a roughly equal technological level.
They only win through force of numbers.
Even worse one of their first word were something like this "thank God someone back from home reinvented interstellar flight! We so eager to reestablish connection with rest of humanity!"
Iirc their ambassador came on the ship with intention to join the Imperium.

I'll lol if the Imperium ever finds a human faction that retains the really nasty weapons from the Dark Age of Technology and enough numbers and ships to fight effectively if the Imperium is dumb enough to start a fight. I so want to see those time warping starship weapons that basically cause the target vessel to telefrag itself in action.

@@TheDeadGunslingermy basic understanding, thanks adric, LoV were dark age colony sent into the core, pressure and gravity on planets there made them shorter and squatter, went underground after ork+eldar war did a hard drive by. Beyond that, I think just regular human adaptation over centuries. Sorry for a long haul my human I like lore
Yeah, I did notice that the soon to be Traitor Legions were screwing up all these super valuable contacts. Like they couldn’t leave that kind of advantage to the Imperium to use against them.

7:23 The tragic part of this covilization is that by this point in time, Lorgar had been convinced to start worshipping the Chaos Gods and going against the Emperor, this combined with the lasting baggage of Monarchia and the dquad of Custodes sent to keep watch on him led him to command the legion to wipe out the civilization of Idolatris (if that's hpw it's spelled) under the guise of actually following the Emperor's orders and getting rid of religion.
If the Word Bearers has reached this planet sooner, before they started to get corrupted, perhaps the world would have been successfully integrated into the Imperium and the poyalists would have had access to some very advanced and fanatically loyal allies.

My favorite lore interpretation was that the great crusade started as a slave revolt, humans were enslaved across the galaxy after the dark age, and thus the zealotry led to.. no mercy to xenos

The emperor decree of all xenos being killed on site because of chaos is the biggest hypocrite since most chaos worshipers are human. It's so sad that all these empires with great potential were destroyed because of zealous ideas.

Intersex didn’t survive DAoT, they just rebuilt. They started the hard way and researched and innovated back to where they were. A true DAoT survival would stomp the Imperium 100%.
