So glad to finally see a sensible review of this pile of trash! I had the same thoughts when I watched it, got online to see what everyone else thought, and was flabbergasted to find that people loved it. You guys hit all the points - it absolutely sucks!

I’ve come to the realization that no matter how good of reviews a movie gets if the FishJelly guys don’t like it I know I won’t either. One of the few honest and critical thinking movie critics out there
18:18 they are forgetting their more and more the longer they are dead. That’s why the baseball guy (can’t remember his name) got abducted could remember a lot but not his name. When Robin spoke to him he could remember everything because he most recently died. The one kid could remember where they put the combo to the lock but not at all what it was or her name cuz she had been dead for longer than both of those 2. Honestly I thought it was pretty clever and consistent
I was a small kid in the 70’s. Ya did get beat up by the school bully (and pushed in the mud wearing my new dress, in my case. Therapy was a word I wouldn’t even know the meaning of at that time. Also, lots of alcoholics.
The grabber leaving behind the black balloons is supposed to represent his signature. Some serial killers will leave behind certain objects, position their victims a certain way, or carve something onto them to let the authorities know it was "their" work.
@@fishjellyfilmreviews Ended up seeing the movie and glad I had my expectations lowered. Totally agree about the bad dialogue (especially the sister…yikes) but had some good scares and ended up having fun with it.
My biggest issue was this: it was heavily implied that the sister has psychic abilities, like her mother may have. So when Finn was hearing the dead boys, seeing the dead boys and moving bottles and stuff, I thought "oh okay, so Finn has psychic abilities as well". But then I was like "well how does The Grabber even just hear the phone ring?" But then I wrote that off as maybe it was actually ringing in real life because of static or whatever dumb excuse, but Finn was the only one that could hear/see/ interact with the dead boys. BUT THEN when Finn is killing The Grabber...the Grabber can freaking hear the dead boys on the phone!!! Like what? So is Finn not psychic at all and the dead boys are just plain ol ghosts that can make themselves heard or seen to anyone whenever they want? That's so dumb, like why even setup the storyline at all of their family having psychic abilities? In the end, the sister's visions did not help Finn in any single way. And if the ghosts could appear to anyone, then again, there is no need for any kind of psychic power element in this movie. Also, I thought that maybe The Grabber was punished down in that basement when he was a boy by his parent or something. Because he said something like "yea that phone used to ring all the time when I was down here too but it doesn't actually work". So I thought maybe he used to be abused down there and now he was repeating the cycle. I don't know though because so many things in this movie didn't add up. Even though I did enjoy the movie overall, it did really irritate me that there were SO many unanswered questions, loose ends and nonsensical decisions

Sadly short stories usually don’t make very good feature myth films. The Netflix movie “In the tall grass” was also a Joe Hill short story (very, very short) and I liked the movie but they basically took the idea of the short story and made it into a movie. It is VASTLY different. I read the story as well.
I kind of agree but not completely. It wasn't great but it wasn't terrible. From my understanding Finn like his sister does have an ability. His sister gets future visions and he can see and hear dead people but because of his lack of understanding the dead kids have to use the phone as a conduit. Also the Grabber also has the same abilities as Finn. Its the Grabber's childhood home and when he was a kid he was abused and locked down there. So the dead kids know the Grabber has this ability which is why they want revenge on him and go crazy at the end yelling at him. The Grabber denies his supernatural gift because it will make him feel guilty, which is why he says he sometimes hears the black phone
I am so happy to hear your opinions on this movie, I thought from the trailer it looked kind of lame, and everyone I've heard from seems to love it so it's so refreshing to hear I'm not alone! Also, totally laughed when you bleeped yourself!

I keep seeing only great reviews for this film and I just don't get it, happy to see two people sharing everything that I felt was wrong with it. One thing that I found funny that nobody mentioned was the last scene of the film where Finny is back in school and his traumatic, murderous experience has suddenly made him the cool kid who gets the popular girl? I mean he killed a grabber in the neighborhood and no kid escaped but him, I think that would warrant some clout. Like those kids definitely wouldn’t bully a killer 😂
Intellectually, I agree with everything you guys have to say. I mean, I was confused by this movie like a mofo. But, all in all, it was still worth my money to go to. The amount of child abuse is a bummer but that’s Stephen King’s style I guess; he keeps it real.

I did not plan on seeing this movie but certain parts intrigued me. I wanted to know the surprise ending the voiceover in the trailer mentions and so I checked out your spoiler review. Very entertaining and probably better than the movie based on the description ... I probably would have guessed the ending since its a parts of other films essentially.
I thought it was interesting, the acting wasnt terrible but could've been much better. I liked Ethan Haukes character, just wish there was more dialogue and more intensity. It wasn't scary either. Idk. I rate it about 2 or 2.5/5...wished they used all the potential there was.
This is most certainly NOT it. Nor is Ethan Hawke’s 1991 Mystery Date, but you guys should watch it for the pod. (I also felt very uncomfortable with being attracted to “The Grabber” but it’s ETHAN HAWKE!) 🔥🖤
I’m glad I watched this film despite your review. I really enjoyed it, perhaps because I’m not a horror fan. It’s the perfect suspense film for non-horror lovers. It was mild revenge porn.
Thank you guys so much for justifying my intuition about this. I keep hearing everyone be so excited about this movie, and I'm looking at the trailer and plot, and original short story...and there's nothing about this that looks particularly intriguing to me. I'm like, is it just me? I love horror, but it seemed like it's just Pennywise again?? Except with creepy masks which looked well done, but that alone is not going to make me pay for a movie. Thank you! :-)
My partner and I saw this trailer last night and he was like 'Omg, that looks like a trainwreck' I was like LEMME SEE WHAT THE BOYS SAY.... and y'all said the same damn thing 😂
The new trailer was kinda awful. The trailer from 8 months ago was pretty good (but way too spoilery after the 2 min mark). The film was absolutely awesome. I’d see it for yourself. It currently sits at 87% on Rotten Tomatoes.
@@ToyFiend 83% on the tomato meter to be fair, but still a great score. And 90% audience score. Great film with a truly spectacular ending. Most satisfying ending I’ve seen to a film like this in a long time.
The movie wasn't bad, BUT I feel like they wasted the concept of "The Grabber." Ethan Hawke did such a great job of making that character terrifying & yet they chose to under utilize him. Don't know if this was because they kept the film at a PG-13 rating OR if they just wanted to appeal to teenage audiences. If they'd bumped the rating to "R" & really went for it with Ethan Hawke, I think we would have had a very different movie.
Maybe sometimes you two could review classics from particular genres. Like favorite film noir, favorite sci Fi, favorite Arnold Schwarzenegger film. I would love to see you guys review Michael Jackson's Moonwalker starring Joe Pesci. Such a gem.
We’d love to do that. There are just so many new releases to cover! We talk about “older” films on the podcast. Moonwalker was a favorite of mine as a kid.
Just found your channel. Love your guy's reviews. Even when I don't agree with them. I see your perspective. I liked this film it's a soft 11 out of 20 imho. Great channel. Hope it grows bigger.
Ok - when I saw the trailer for this I had a strong feeling that it would be a stinker, but then when I saw Chris Stuckmann raving about it, I thought maybe I was wrong. Now that I've heard y'all's opinions, I definitely won't be seeing it (spoiler alert, I trust your opinions more than Chris').
It is nice to hear different ideas, but guys, you sometimes make me feel that no chile fits you and that it has to be exhausting to be your friend 😩 hahaha 😬 I really enjoyed the film. Keep it up. You give us a different perspective on things, and that, I appreciate 😉
I love watching different review channels. It's interesting to see the different opinions. Dude from We Watched a Movie had some issues with it. Chris Stuckmann liked it. Double Toasted I believe liked it overall.
Shout out to Double Toasted...the other 2 are alright but love Korey and Martin over here. Did you know that they were close to the screenwriter (idk if they bring it up in their review) C Robert Cargill.
For the last few months, Stuckmann has liked everything lol. My theory is that now he's making his own movie, he doesn't wanna shit on other filmmakers. If that's true, I get it but I still really miss Hilariocity 😢
This is a long, detailed and great review, thanks! I am sadly very very logical and literal (it might be my autism idk) so while there is things I can overlook, all the things you listed sound like they’d irk me wayy too much. For example the children not really helping, because how did Coraline give you a brilliant example of how that can be done and you have such a scary aspect of voices on the phone and you ruin it by showing them, making them not helpful at all AND basically just throwing together a lot of other horror movies. It definitely has a promising premise and wayy more potential and great visuals but yeah one thing I can’t stand is if things just don’t make sense at all, even in fictional standards if you understand what I’m trying to say?? Thank you for taking your time to watch and then discuss it!!
Glad you were honest about it. I didn't likeit either and waited so long to watch it. However, I think it has potential to get a prequel. Why not? Maybe the short story is the problem. I would still believe, the script's dialogues and changes from the original are contributing though. I watched it in German which made it more difficult to watch the actors play their emotions. It came off stiff.
At 5:11 :) No wonder there's many similarities, in many items/reference - like *bullies and balloons*, pointing to Stephen King! I never checked origins of a story to a movie. Surprised myself that I have seen my 1st ever horror movie - Salem's Lot (1976) and Cujo, The Mist and a few more. So, yeah, found both your opinions here easy to agree with on many points. If possible will watch it just once.:)
I really enjoyed this film and thought the kids were great. I have 2 young kids and completely agreed with the heart felt depiction in the movie. Not sure why Fish Jelly hated it but I watched the movie in full, which I would do again but I stopped the movie review at 8mins because it’s just bitching with comparison with completely random things. I normally find Fish Jelly funny, maybe it’s the late night review thing.
And this is why I love this channel! What a spot on and honest az review of this janky AF movie!!! OMG I hated it and you guys nailed everything that was wrong with it which was a lot LOL I can't believe I actually looked forward to watching this movie. It will go down as one of the worst I have ever seen and there have been some terribles !!! Yes, I'm talking to you Tourist Trap 1979🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I thought that the film thrives off the unknown. The movie builds a lot on what it meant to be in the 1970s in the midst of the technological advancement and mental health advocacy that’s easily accessible in our era with 2010/2020 optics. The child’s doll house and religious sentiments, watching films such as the referential 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre (which was common than the film stays on the big screen for a few years because there wasn’t the invention of home video yet), the bullying and and hardcore fighting, being oblivious to peoples sensibilities and welfare, socioeconomic disparities, and the hammered depressed Father was common in the 1960s/1970s/1980s. No one got through untouched. Berating and beating children just what it was back then. I enjoy how the director didn’t try to sensor the reality of what things were back then. But then a lot was left to to imagination, just how films used to be made. It is what it is. I think that the mood of the film was built on how much we didn’t know about the grabber’s story, while the film spent a great deal of the time with the progression and character development of many of the supporting antagonist. I understand people thought the film was too mid, but for what it was worth, I strongly think it was a solid film 4/5.
This movie has such high ratings, I just finished watching it and was like "what!? That's it?" it was not scary at all. Had to come watch your review and I see I had the same thoughts you guys did. Ethan Hawk and his mask was the only good thing in the movie. (And Joseph, I found the grabber hot too 😂)
I don't get it are the boys spirit are where they died or where they wer buried,I was confused it was not what I thought it would be sinister were better
I saw this at Fantastic Fest at my work all the way back in 2021 and have eagerly awaited its release. Even though they didn’t like the movie, I absolutely loved it and so did the audience, who was cheering before the movie was even over!
I liked this movie a little more than you guys did. It wasn't that scary but the main thing I liked about it was how all the Grabber's former victims came together to help Finn. I liked how, albeit briefly, we got to know each victim a little bit and how they each contributed to Finn's eventual escape. It wasn't a great movie but I liked it just okay.
Thank you for this. My kid and I watched and were and have been utterly confused by all the glowing reviews. Just overwrought nonsense as far as we were concerned. People are welcome to their misguided opinions regarding BP but that doesn’t mean my opinion of them isn’t going to be lowered as a result. One star for decent production values but not half a star more!
Thank you 😫!!! This movie was dry dry dry. You guys reminded me how much I didn’t like this movie. My EXACT thoughts watching this. It was very disappointing. The people I watched it with loved it I was like did we just watch the same movie?!?! I mean it was bad lol. I’m so glad I didn’t pay to watch it. People were exclaiming how good the kid acting was but I’m sorry even that was mediocre. And Nick I have the same issues with Sinister and the way the spirits show up. That movie goes from horrifying to bland in an instant. This was actually painful to watch 😂 You guys are so on point with your reviews 🙌😎
I really appreciate this honest review. The short story is worth a read. I liked it. If you guys like reading ghost stories, Stephen King has a great one called Later that came out a year or two ago. It’s going to be made into a movie soon too.
adding this one to my watch later playlist as I'm seeing it this weekend. Didn't love Sinister after that dumb ending but I'm a sucker for horror, sue me.
YOU GUYS ARE MY NW FAVORITE! I'm watching this review late - but I agree with you about this film AND IT'S NOT SCARY AT ALL!!! UGH, I had high hopes for this one and I live in the North Denver Burbs - so I can totally visualize this actually happening in the late 70's. disappointing. keep doing reviews - I appreciate and adore you both :)
I was waiting so long for this just to be disappointed. That damn phone rang too many times and when he said he’d been down there before I was over it because it went no where they could’ve done so much more. Joseph I like how you said it would’ve been better to start at him waking up in the basement
The film would have been pointless had he woken up in the basement. Everything that happens in the film before he is taken makes everything that happens at the end carry a lot of power and meaning.
@@kristopherschermerhorn998 I agree. If the movie started with him in the basement it would have been "this is some kid who gets kidnapped and has tries to survive". But all of that character building in the beginning shows "this is about a kid who struggles with confidence and respect, and unfortunately the way he gets better is by getting kidnapped and having to fight for his life"
I think there should have been a lot more build up before he was taken to the basement. Particuarly the relationship between Fin and his "friend" needed a lot more flushing out. I didn't feel anything for these kids who were taken because you only got two minutes with them before they were gone. I haven't read the book but according to someone who did, in the book the brother of the killer shows up as an unexpected guest and that's what causes the killer to leave Fin alone and creates some time (although not days) for him to escape. That makes a lot more sense rather than this game of "naughty boy" he was playing.
As for the black balloons I guess everyone had black balloons back then in the 70's because how did the cops not find the one person that actually owns and uses black balloons. haha
Finally an honest review, i saw all other reviews praising this movie and i had no idea why!! the movie was average and maybe below average . Thanks for the review guys
Oh No! I have been literally counting down the days for the release. In fact, a few of us were going to head to the local drive-in to see it. I feel so let down. I love Ethan Hawke, and since you mentioned "Sinister" a few times, I'm going to re-watch that. It's been years since I've seen it. BTW, I had to play back Joseph's bleeped word a few times, before I understood. "Fey" was the clue hahahhahaha. Thanks for another terrific review!
The film was absolutely awesome. I’d see it for yourself. It currently sits at 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. If you liked Sinister, you’ll likely like the Black Phone. They’re very similar in many ways, but The Black Phone is a better film IMO
I really appreciated the film left a lot of things unanswered. We knew only as much as Finney which I thought really worked in adding intrigue and mystery
The idea of it was extremely good.. The execution and delivery wasn't the best. But overall a good picture. I like the subtle connection of the son ALSO having abilities like the mother and sister as well
I was looking forward to this movie. Never mind. This reminds me of when I read over 1200 pages of "Under the Dome" by the Dad and the ending was UTTER nonsense, then someone had the nerve to turn the book into a series. Thank you gentlemen again, you make work lunchtime fun and fabulous 🙂.
I just saw it tonight. Do you guys think that was his body in the shirtless scenes or a body double? I wasn’t sure because I always thought he was skinnier.
I realize this is a tad off topic. But you guys should know what it is like working at the front desk of a hotel sometime. Because talk about constant and annoying phone ringing. Then half of the time no one even answers! Perhaps there are spirits calling such as with the phone in this movie.

This is most certainly NOT it. Nor is Ethan Hawke’s 1991 Mystery Date, but you guys should watch it for the pod. (I also felt very uncomfortable with being attracted to “The Grabber” but it’s ETHAN HAWKE!) 🔥🖤
Thank you!
I was wondering if I was the only one who did not like this movie
I’m glad I watched this film despite your review. I really enjoyed it, perhaps because I’m not a horror fan. It’s the perfect suspense film for non-horror lovers. It was mild revenge porn.
I agree. I did enjoy it but I'm too not a massive horror fan. I can see why people didn't like it but it's a film I'd happily watch again
Definitely can see that! However it was promoted as a horror movie. As a horror movie buff it was a C- 😅
Thank you! :-)
My partner and I saw this trailer last night and he was like 'Omg, that looks like a trainwreck'
I was like LEMME SEE WHAT THE BOYS SAY.... and y'all said the same damn thing 😂
The new trailer was kinda awful. The trailer from 8 months ago was pretty good (but way too spoilery after the 2 min mark). The film was absolutely awesome. I’d see it for yourself. It currently sits at 87% on Rotten Tomatoes.
@@kristopherschermerhorn998 might watch it for a Mystery Science Theater experience lol
@@ToyFiend 83% on the tomato meter to be fair, but still a great score. And 90% audience score. Great film with a truly spectacular ending. Most satisfying ending I’ve seen to a film like this in a long time.
I’ve watched like 30 of your videos so far, this is actually one of the best film review channels on TH-cam. You guys should be much bigger
I liked it but it’s not really scary at all….
“It’s a mess. What this review or the film? Both.” 😂😂😂😂
I liked it, but do agree the positive reviews are way overrated. I just like the 70's setting, and Ethan Hawke character.
It is nice to hear different ideas, but guys, you sometimes make me feel that no chile fits you and that it has to be exhausting to be your friend 😩 hahaha 😬
I really enjoyed the film.
Keep it up. You give us a different perspective on things, and that, I appreciate 😉
Just saw film. Agreed with you all for most part. Great reviews regardless.
I love watching different review channels. It's interesting to see the different opinions. Dude from We Watched a Movie had some issues with it. Chris Stuckmann liked it. Double Toasted I believe liked it overall.
A lot of other reviewers liked this movie. I usually agree with Nick on 90%.
@@bees.857 he;s basically confirmed he's only doing positive reviews now lol
A lot of good points. Great video
Ha! You guys were in front of me last night. Oof. It's not good
It’s nice having a witness to our experience.
I understand people thought the film was too mid, but for what it was worth, I strongly think it was a solid film 4/5.
love you guys!
I thought he looked hot too. I would have went upstairs.
just started watching you guys. Love the reviews
You know, Ethan Hawke, even with that reverse snaggle tooth that he has… I’d hit that shit too. You all crack me up. ♥️
Most horror movies are not very good nowadays anyway
I really appreciate this honest review. The short story is worth a read. I liked it. If you guys like reading ghost stories, Stephen King has a great one called Later that came out a year or two ago. It’s going to be made into a movie soon too.
adding this one to my watch later playlist as I'm seeing it this weekend.
Didn't love Sinister after that dumb ending but I'm a sucker for horror, sue me.
I enjoyed this quite a bit :)
Edit- I enjoyed this review more :D
I disagree. This movie is worth watching.
I actaully really liked this one👌🏻
Well dang. I was so excited for this. So bummed it was terrible!!! I’ll use my tix money for a good dinner for myself :)
I'm so glad you guys reviewed this!! I definitely won't be watching. That image of Ethan behind you guys is scary enough for me!!!
What about the black van not in a garage? That is clearly visible from the street???
What’s like it tho?
I’m glad you two popped up in my feed! Loved this video. I’m happy to see you’re married to each other! More horror reviews, please❤
As for the black balloons I guess everyone had black balloons back then in the 70's because how did the cops not find the one person that actually owns and uses black balloons. haha
the dads acting was SO horrible
It was fine as a streaming movie. I enjoyed it but i don’t think i would have been ok with seeing it the theater
That thumbnail was giving what in the Babadook.👀 And Disney's haunted mansion all at the same d*** time and I love It
Finally an honest review, i saw all other reviews praising this movie and i had no idea why!! the movie was average and maybe below average . Thanks for the review guys
The grabber’s mask was stolen from American Horror Story Freak Show’s Twisty the Clown. A derivative train wreck.
Yes, rhymes with “saggy.”
The film was absolutely awesome. I’d see it for yourself. It currently sits at 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. If you liked Sinister, you’ll likely like the Black Phone. They’re very similar in many ways, but The Black Phone is a better film IMO
@@kristopherschermerhorn998 I have to see it. I have too much time invested waiting for its release. :)
I hope you still watched it. I thought it was pretty good.
@@LillyB_RN I did see it, and thoroughly enjoyed it!
I really appreciated the film left a lot of things unanswered. We knew only as much as Finney which I thought really worked in adding intrigue and mystery
Theres leaving things unanswered and then theres just having plotholes. This movie is full of plotholes
I can’t see anyone liking this over the age of 14.
They save me so much time I would have wasted on movies that are not worth it lol
I have no interest in the film but I’m always interested in your reviews. Always well done and fun.
