I told somebody about that burp hose on TH-cam. I call it a burp hose because I think it let's air out of the tank while you fill it so fuel doesn't spit up out of the nozzle. I thought it was you but maybe someone else. Mine came off on my 300d and I had fuel in my trunk. I first thought it was my fuel canister I had in there had a leak so I tossed it but discovered it was that hose. Anyway I put a clamp on it. What a dumbass thing for them to not put a clamp on it when they built it.
When I had mine I never knew about algae growing in there or seemed to have a rust problem. I sold that car in 05 so it's someone else's problem. Lol

Great video thank you! Was trying to figure out why i couldnt get my w116’s tank out. Guess it just needs a good yank (once the snow melts up here) then off to get stream cleaned

Nothing like having a chance to remove your fuel tank? Unfortunately on classic Mercedes. I believe it's part of the after 25 year period of ownership. Thank you very much for the incredible knowledge and experience!

Thanks! The sort of maintenance items that come up on old cars is quite different as the years pass. We are just caretakers. Hopefully 100 years from now another person will be maintaining this car.

I've been trying it get the tank out for 2 hours. It just keeps slipping back into the boots near the filler

When I run into a frustrating problem, it's best just to walk away for a little while. Sit down. Do something else. Mind clears. Then before you know it, you figure it out.

I recall that filler neck fit into the rubber seal can be kind of tight. Try some lubricant.

Finally got it out - one return line was still connected. As luck would have it, one of the swaged fittings snapped clean in half. Maybe the hose was desperate to be replaced 🤣

That looks a whole lot more like Algae to me...

Yeah after making the video I started thinking the same. None was accumulated on the strainer however. In retrospect some of the dark spots on the inside of the tank might be algae but a great deal was also red rust. Either way, none of it will live through what I have planned for it. 😁

@@ImpalamansGarage Well hopefully cleaning is all that is needed! Keep in mind algae also comes in a few different colors! lol. ive dealt with algae in diesel tanks before and its not fun. Make sure you get ALL of it out, or it could come back down the line...
