How to play 'Comfortably Numb' by Pink Floyd

- Here's an absolute classic from a huge band - let's take it apart and learn the chord shapes and strumming patterns as well as a couple of really cool embellishments - a bass walk and a quick 'punch' in there from one chord to another. We'll do a full playalong as always and also touch on a bit of lead stuff toward the end. Let's go!
I'm using the 'Rock 1' setting on the Beatbuddy at 64bpm for those who are interested.

It's funny we all start out frustrated with our fret hand trying to form chords and run scales. After a while you find yourself closing your eyes and hitting the chords and running scales with your fret hand. It's the strumming and picking hand that never stops evolving. It's the strumming hand that shapes the sound and expresses same chords differently. The coolest thing about the guitar is you never really master it. The guitar still has secrets it keeps just waiting to be discovered. A never ending puzzle with countless ways to play the same chords.
Exactly right Wayne - an endless adventure. Cheers! Shane
You got that right it a puzzle, currently stock in music theory but I hope soon I’ll able to get to the other side 😅
Been playing guitar since I was 12ish now 57....was just thinking this the other day! The guitar is a never ending friendship, with it you are never alone.
Shane is a complete gentleman and a fantastic teacher. Top man indeed
Thank you Brendan - so great to hear from you and I really appreciate the comment. Hope all is well across the pond - my best to you and yours lad! Shane
The Taylor has a nice warm acoustic sound. Good lesson on an epic Pink Floyd song.
Another fantastic lesson. Ahhhhh....Saturday mornin' a cup Joe, Pink Floyd and my pal Shane.....yeah, you could say I'm pretty comfortaby.....numb...thank you sir...
That’s fabulous Chris - thank you and have fun with it! Shane
The thing I love most about this channel are the play-alongs. They really drive home the lesson. It's a unique feature of this channel that most other channels don't do. Thanks!
Super - thanks for that. Very encouraging. I’m really glad you like the playalong aspect - so important! Shane
For sure
He makes it seem so effortless and simple. But we know that it takes years of practice as well as his love and experience is so astounding
Treu artist 🎨
Thank you Douglas - greatly appreciated! Shane
One of THE great songs of all time…taught so well. 👍
Shane, you knocked it out of the park. This was an awesome pick. I love your rendition of making a face to get the note right.
Hey! Thank you - that’s hugely encouraging. I appreciate you! Shane
I'm a self-taught looong time late-beginner, I can play barre chords pretty clean with a proper technique, I do not wrap my thumb above the fretboard it is placed nice and tidy directly behind BUT the muscle between my thumb and index finger always gets so tense, almost to a point of painful cramp. That one little advise you've given around 2:00 I think will solve it; place the thumb little bit even lower. I've watched countless beginner-intermediate guitar lessons online but never heard such a subtle but effective correction recommendation. They always mention the proper way of placing the thumb behind but lowering it a little bit more with that wrist angle, never heard. Thank you dear, sir. You've helped this chronic beginner a lot.
Definitely one of the best teachers on TH-cam. You don't just teach chords but musicianship which is more important for the feel 👍
Hey thanks for that. Very glad it’s working for you. My best to you! Shane
Don’t bump that beautiful guitar to the table 😊.Nice lesson .You seem very passionate in your lessons. Thanks!
Thanks Phillip - I’m always careful not to bang the guitar on the desk. Best to you! Shane
At last! I've found tutorials I can follow and enjoy. Thank you Shane.
Very glad to hear that Pete - my best to you and I hope you have fun with it. Cheers! Shane
This has been hands down my favorite guitar instruction yet. Awesome song, greatly taught, so much fun to play and sing with! Thank you very much for putting this out here for all to learn and enjoy! Very well done!
Thank you Jordan - very glad you enjoyed. I really appreciate you taking the time to comment - very encouraging! Shane
One of my favorite songs of all time. And as a guitar player, this song was truly instrumental in in helping me become fluid in my soloing. It's still my "go to" for warming up. The tempo is slow enough, and the techniques simple enough, that makes it a great song for practicing your improv soloing over the Bm pentatonic.
Fabulous. Thank you! Shane
It's hard to stop playing this tune😁👍👍
Always enjoy the lead, but the foundation is so important for the feel.
Great video as always Shane😎👍
😎✌👍❤🖖
Thank you Richard - I couldn't agree more. Best to you! Shane
Woke up today, raining outside, and this lesson came up. Will play with this this morning. I as well enjoy your teaching and enthusiasm. Keep up the great work. I thank you for your Van Morrison “ Into the Mystic” lesson. I Now play it properly 👍😃
Super - thanks for that. Have fun with it! Shane
So many nice little techniques. Really fun to play with each of them and then add them in to the song. Thanks!
Thank you Frank - I agree wholeheartedly - add them when you're ready - fabulous. Shane
Awesome!! I've always wanted to play this song. I love your energy and how you remember what it was like to learn to play the guitar. Thanks !!

Your lesson completely catches the „spirit“ of the famous song. Congrats! It´s one of my all time favourites, having been now a big fan of Pink Floyd since 1978. Keep on teaching in your style, it´s marvellous. Thanks!

I love your work!!
Great lesson Shane. You make that Taylor sound so good. With the Beat Buddy setting the tempo, you have a winner combo. Thanks for all your hard work and motivation.
Love playing along, best part of the video.
Excellent - a big thank you for that....to me, it's the most important part. Best to you! Shane
So much fun to play, thanks for posting!
Awesome lesson
Great teacher
Love this song from my early teenage years, one of my faborite Pink Floyd.👍👍
Hey thanks for that. It's a favourite here too. I appreciate the encouraging words. Cheers! Shane
I loved the play along at the end!! This way you did the lesson was absolutely PERFECT. Please please please keep this structure for your lessons. I really like a full play along after the actual lesson with your little reminders as opposed to a mini demo in the beginning. Playing the whole thing with you, I was feeling good about the Bm. I’m still slow at switching between the barre and open chords, but I can make the barre chords ring out now every time or if I mess up, I can get my fingers right and fix it. Your Bm video specifically helped me A LOT with all the barre chords, so thanks for that! I can’t get enough of your lessons.
Super! Thank you so much for that. Very glad you’re enjoying. My best to you! Shane

Another truly great tutorial for a truly great song. Thank you!!
Thank you Frank - very glad you enjoyed. Thanks for taking the time to let me know. Cheers! Shane
Excellent! This saves me a ton of work. This is a standby. I'm trying to build a full set. I started trying to write songs before I could really play. I realized that learning covers teaches me to play and write. FYI Don't buy a stand alone drum machine. It won't sync with a looper. Buy the pedal that does both.
Thanks Aaron - glad it’s working for you. The BeatBuddy will sync with looper - fabulous! Shane
Excelente ... Shane 👋👋👋

Hey Shane, Dale here from Cornwall. A suggestion for a future video. Summertime in the stle of Billy Strings and Marcus King. Can be as simple as you want or as fancy as you want. Good improvisation chord structure as well. I have been a subscriber since the 5K level. Great to see your base grow the 150K. Excellent teacher and great format. Onwards and ever upwards. Cheers
Thanks Dale - I saw a video of those two doing that song just a few days ago. Really great. Best to you, Shane
Thank you, well done!

Aloha Shane, fantastic lesson! I thought I was improving quite a bit until I tried to play along with my Beat Buddy, boy do I have some work to do. 😂
I realize I need to get my rhythm down a lot tighter and this seems like a perfect song to work on.
I really enjoy your lessons and your use of the Beat Buddy is incredibly helpful! Mahalo!

That is SO Great - thank you Barbara - I used Google translate and it worked like a charm. Always happy to hear from you and I hope you really enjoy this one, Cheers! Shane

Hey - thank you Billy - always happy to hear from you. Greetings from Ottawa where it is starting to get cold....ugh.
Thanks Shane! I love how you teach. Great teacher. I play electric now and I love your set up with the beat buddy and the looper. Wondering about it fittting on my pedal board.. and where the beat buddy would go, maybe before the looper?
Thanks Julie - so glad you're enjoying. I always have fun making these videos and it's great to hear from people who are watching. Ideally, the Beatbuddy and the looper get outputted separately. Cheers, Shane
thank you
Wow, what musical talent. I play but you’re like a fish under water and I’m like a rooster swimming as best I can.
