While I enjoyed all of the TedX Dayton 2018 talks, this was by far my favorite. I'm still processing and internalizing it, and finding practical use in my life. Thank you Mark!

Good video. I wasn't in the military, but when I was a journalist I had opportunities to fly on some military fighter and airlift missions and sit in on the debriefs as well as the preflight briefs. The organization and professionalism was impressive.

Great comments. FWIW, I was an MCC at EADS for several years (including when it was NEADS). When I retired, much of my retirement speech dealt with the military Leader/Follower relationship.

FWIW - For What It's Worth
EADS - Eastern Air Defense Sector
NEADS - Northeast Air Defense Sector
MCC - This is an acronym for several things

This is a great tribute and deep thought to the fighter pilot culture. Standards, expectations, integrity, humility, credibility. Thanks for the words.

Thank you, Mark. I have often participated in "lessons learned" debrief meetings after spill response exercises and drills as deckhand om a commercial fishing vessel (24/7 response with 1 hour callout) in Alaska, as a public radio board member, an IBEW shop steward representing municipal employees, and with Dad on some of his projects. (Dad started with me in the last 17 years of his 21-year AF career, that none of Dad's and Mom's ranch neighbors knew about until after he passed on, and I, his eldest and their youngest put together a PowerPoint looping slide show for them.) As an AF brat, I recognize that I carry that discipline and care for others through my life. A fellow shop steward, once asked me in wonder how I was so easily able to handle grievance meetings, as it was difficult for him to grasp that he had equal standing with the highest official (city manager, police chief or other dept. head). Write things down in the meeting, send a written summary to all the participants, and accept thanks with the same grace you extend to everyone.
I have been researching Cold War history, including 'false flag' events and military losses, learning back to what the founders of this country intended. They, too, were operating in an organization atmosphere similar to that of a fighter squadron. The deliberations in drafting the declaration of independence from England and the tyranny of King George, and the constitution that followed were conducted when every one knew the art of argument, to listen attentively to each argument, and assemble the best into the final product, with the result that everyone participates and everybody wins. When asked, "What sort of government did you give us?" Benjamin Franklin replied, "A constitutional republic, Madam, if you can keep it." That is indeed an atmosphere in which every individual is a sovereign, and a peer with everyone else, and each has a responsibility for the maintenance and administration of the whole.
Sadly, "Those who would give up their freedom for safety and security, deserve neither." Another quote from the founders of these united states, and as I research these things, we are witnessing the restoration of constitutional republics. Amazing times!

    VETERANS,
USE YOUR GI BILL. GO TO COLLEGE. INTERACT. Know the people who live in your country. Understand your people. YOU ARE A WARRIOR. They want to hear what you know. USE YOUR GI BILL. GO! GO! GO!

Most in college are being indoctrinated to loathe the military. Regardless, your comment is good.

Mark is the Democratic nominee for OH Senate District 6. That’s my District. I’m planning on voting for his opponent Niraj Antani, but I may consider voting for Mark simply because of his leadership skills and commitment to the Miami Valley. Good speech Mark!

I'm happy your candidate, Niraj Antani, won. I hope he's a Conservative and not another RINO.
I don't understand how anyone in the military can be a Demoncrat. I hope Mark Fogel does not think as the Demoncrats of today think.

the fact that both young and old make remarks on each other, is the key to higher success rates.
Often you just see the most high ranking person calling the shots and telling the lower guys to just shut up, but this only give a 180 view of the overall success and failure, but to get a 360 view you need the lows guy to say hay sir you called this so i responded. this way but i thank you need to call this way to get the success rate up. the higher ranking guy noted it and adjust to the new information or provided a response on why it was that way, also guys not knowing something becomes notice too everyone here and can be pointed out

I know he said fighter pilots are the opposite of Maverick, but I know from my own experiences that many pilots are cocky individuals not much different from Mav. I met them, talked to them....and honestly I wouldn’t have them any other way. I want that pilot to be the best and believe he is the best every time he/she flies.

It may come as a surprise to fighter pilots, but most if not all military pilots have debriefs. They also have followers and leaders, etc. He gives a good synopsis of military flying and training in general, but not unique to “fighter pilots”.
