About a year ago, I started experimenting with growing some of my plants exclusively in water (rinsing off their roots thoroughly, placing them in water with Hydroguard, waiting for them to shed their soil roots and develop water roots, then start adding synthetic fertilizer with Hydroguard to my water). Some plants died. Many of my plants suffered temporarily and then bounced by but grew slowly. And some of my plants completely thrived, never looked sad, and have grown like crazy. The Musaica has problem done better than any plant I own. It loves live in water. Not a single crispy tip and so many new leaves.
Ohhhhhh that is very very interesting, I have heard that people have successfully grown calathea in water, never heard of the musaica and also it does well you say, 🤔🤔🤔 might give it a try 😊
I agree completely. I was watering my calathea like a normal tropical plant, keeping it moist and occasionally on the dry side. Eventually I moved it into a tent with automated daily watering if it needed it or not, and it just started to take off and grow like crazy (for such a slow plant) even though it was under less light, not more.
I am team musaica! One of the few plants I have in soil because it was doing so well. Self watering pot. Humidity around 50%. Only a few crispy tips. Started as two leaves and is now a beast. My only tip is to not let it dry out. Grows reasonably fast. Love this plant!
Also, I switched from my aroid mix to a simple mix of 50 percent African Violet potting mix, 50 percent perlite, and they do much better in my experience. They seem to prefer the more acidic mix.
All my Calathea, Maranta, Stramanthae are all in Semi-Hydro self watering pots and are so happy. I would highly recommend trying it out and see the difference x Edited to add I gifted my Sister in Law the White Fusion two Christmas's ago, she is a relative novice and although it was a small plant to start with and I put it in PON (but isn't self watering)for her it is still going, still small, but not crispy just small and beautiful. It is a mini miracle xx

I love my Calathea Network. I got mine spring/summer 2022. She's in indirect light. Tap or bottled water. She's so easy. Mine does "pray" but not as obvious as other prayer plants. No crispy ends. Normal room humidity. I haven't repotted her yet. One of my easiest houseplants, not just easiest calathea. Beautiful pattern on the leaves
I purchased one about 6 weeks ago now, and after about 3 weeks in my home I repotted it and divided it up (the plant was so root bound). Memo, your advice about the soil has been a serious game changer for my other calatheas, and honestly made the biggest difference to all my other prayer plants, and so far this one has benefitted from it too! They seem to like drying out a lot more than I was previously letting them, and I started supplementing with a grow light plus a humidifier (both run for 8-10 hours). And everyone just keeps growing its amazing! This one does seem to be a bit slower but I think its still acclimating to the new soil, so hopefully it speeds up in the next month or two. For reference I am in the southern hemisphere in a very dry, hot climate.
Awwww I am so glad that my advice on the soil has helped, it suprised me too when I first tried it, but I have learned if it works don't fix it 😅, especially with Calathea 😅🌿💚
I bought this beauty as a tiny plug in spring of 2021. It wasn't expensive and did okay in normal home conditions. Then we had a huge cold snap and lost power for days, and it died, or so I thought. I put the pot with its soil in a storage bin of other used pots and 2 months later while looking for a pot I opened the dark bin and this plant had at least 4 growth points poking out of a heavy on the perlite dirt! It is as healthy as it ever was and doing very well. I'd say the Network, definitely has unexpected resiliency and does well to a variety of growing conditions if given the time to acclimate to its environment. It's in a fern bark, soil and perlite mix, seems to be happy at least for now, lol! Thank you for the interesting videos!

I have Calathea Musaica too, so I´m very happy to see her here :-) I do like her not so much for the looks (I find her looking more like a fern than a typical calathea, and then I look at her as a pretty "fern" :-) ), but for her resilience. I have her since she was a tiny baby, and it´s such a grateful survivor of everything - lived through spidermites, thrips, since 2nd winter doesn´t go dormant (but significantly slows down), and still grows on and renews itself. She does well in lower light, and even 20 cm from the heating and doesn´t bother. I´m considering selling her due to lack of space, but I have a dillema - she behaves so well, that she probably deserves to stay... She does pray, but only about 45° I find. This one with the Calathea Makoyana are the easiest calatheas, in my experience - simply survivors determined to survive everything no matter what :-) Agree on everything you said about her. Thanks for the info on stromanthe magic star: cool to know (I have only the triostar, 2nd year still going on, but magic star might more forgiving😀 ). I don´t see calatheas as prissy: most of my collection is the marantacae family and I got so used to them, that to me they are just normal :-D But maybe the love for them made me a blind addict :-D In my view, there is no more beautiful plant in this world than the Calathea Makoyana and the bloody White Fusion, which I will hopefully never buy again :-D ). I think this species is my oldest living calathea too. And one of the very few I have left. It's definitely not thriving, but meh... I've decided to buy calatheas only during the summer and if they are filthy cheap and enjoy them as annuals outdoors. Falling out of love with these plants would be an understatement!! Definitely making me rethink calatheas 😮or at least this one specifically! I volunteer at a conservatory and they have several types of calathea. This is the only one in their collection that looks good. The other types are super crispy, even in high humidity and decent temps! Same exact feeling about the White Fusion 😁 I tried the Musaica and I didn’t like how easily the leaves would look less than ideal. It’s a bummer because from a distance these tend to look fine but up close, you see. But to enjoy this plant, you should get up close to those leaves. I would try again with water and then in a no drainage LECA setup but like… I wouldn’t seek it out. It needs to jump into my lap and it better be pest-free 😂 Thanks for the video, I love these.
I got a Musaica at Home Depot. They were never commonly available where I live in Idaho, USA. I was collecting Calathea at the time. I also found it to be undemanding in regard to light, and humidity. It is difficult to keep it in perfect condition as the leaves can easily look kinda ratty. I divided mine after about a year, and plan to give one of the plants away. I am hopeing someone will take it as it is not a particularly pretty plant except when looking at its leaving up close.
I love Calatheas so much. I have had mine since June 22 and they survived a major heating period. I took your advice in a previous video to heart and get predatory mites on a regular basis. And guess what? No pest as of yet on all of my calatheas (knock on wood). And almost no crispiness. If it stays like this for another year, I'll definitely try the Triostar. Also: not all fold their leaves up completely, but the stems move. My orbifolia at day has her leaves everywhere. In the evening it doesn't look much different, but I can see the pot and soil, because the stems move further up. Maybe it's the same for the Mosaica.
I live in a flat with not that much space with good light (especially in winter) and I only came accross this plant as a big plant, so I never bought it. I prefer to buy smaller / baby plants that I can grow slowly, that's more suited to what space I have.
It does strike as having some sort of code. Maybe the secrets to life 😊. I bought one last year and I have been struggling a little with it and what caught my eye about it is it looks digital (Electronics) which is very close to what I studied growing up. Or maybe slightly a player piano role hence musaica.
I had a similar idea in comparing the patterns on the leaves to something! To me it looked like chromosome karyotyping, it kind of looks like the banding on the chromosomes. I just got a small pot of this plant recently and I’m hoping I can keep it looking decent
i have one of these and it's one of THE MOST UNBOTHERED plants i have. lol i have moved a few times, it's had a freak accident, etc and it might suffer slightly for a bit but it comes back. i even had to do a big chop once and it grew back without drama. speed--mine grows avg. not my fastest plant but i definitely have calathea that resolutely refuse to grow or die; this musaicae definitely is not one that just sits there. mine musaicae does the praying leaves thing pretty dramatically each day. question: does yours have a pungent odor??? mine has a loud smell...almost like cat pee lol oh and someone mentioned growing in water--i had one once that i grew in pumice. it was pretty happy.
My Musaica is loosing a lot of leaves all of a sudden, they went all yellow. Is it because it is winter? Or am I over/underwatering it? I just transplanted it into a terracota pot, I think plastic was holding a bit too much water
I’ve had a calathea for almost a year and she was doing so well until it got cold enough for me to turn on my home’s heating. Even though the vents have deflectors to direct the air away from my plants, the calathea just decided to get crispy and drop most of her stems 🙄 I don’t know why I expected anything different 😅
I bought this plant from Costa Farms website about two years ago. It was about $40. By summer they were all over stores for $20. Mine is currently on a shelf with a grow light over it. It has pushed out 10 or more leaves at a time several times this year (last 6-7 months on the shelf). I don’t even understand. It needs to be repotted but I’m scared to touch it.
Ohhh yeah I think because of the way the leaves are the moment might be a bit smaller. I fully get you about being worried to repot, I have to say I avoid it with mine as much as possible as I always find they throw a bit of a temper tantrum when repoted 😬💚😅🌿

I almost exclusively grow calatheas, and I can say this one is truly one of the slower growing varieties, along with any of the roseopicta hybrids.

This one been in my care 2 yrs or longer an it’s so easy an takes a lot of abuse an neglect. Love the leaves there’s nothing else like them. 💚😍

I just rescued a Calathea musaica.. It came in with folded and browning leaves close to dying.. I hope it lives 😢

I have killed every Calathea, but this one has 50+ leaves and looks great. It’s a giant 3’ x 2’ puff of greenery. It must like my neglectful care 😂

Also the leaves go up and down on mine but it’s less dramatic than other calathea because the leaves are so floppy.
