I grew up a huge Cale fan. Cale only ran seven full seasons out of a thirty-one year career. Three of those seasons resulted in championships. Cale is also tied, with Jimmie Johnson, for sixth in overall wins at eighty-three. That’s eighty-three wins out of only 560 starts over thirty-one years. That averages to one win every 6.75 starts. Cale is a true legend, in every sense of the word.
I remember in the 80s, they gave Cale a Porsche to roadtest on a track...after a few laps he got out handed over the keys and said " It ain't nothin but a glorified Corvair "
Rest In Peace for Cale Yarborough. Even though he is gone but his legacy will never be forgotten. My thoughts and prayers are with him his friends and his family.🙏

I hadn't watched much American racing til then - I'm Australian. But I watched the race as a university student in Australia that year. I decided then and there that if Yarborough could achieve that I would name my son after him. In 1989 I named my first son Cale.
Al Unser did the same thing for the 1987 Indy 500. He was hired by Roger Penske at the last minute to fill a vacancy, after Danny Ongais crashed and was injured in practice. Without a car available, Penske pulled a year old March chassis being used as a show car, out of a hotel lobby in Reading, Pennsylvania. The car was fitted with a Cosworth engine, and he went on to win the race, becoming only the 2nd person to win Indy for a 4th time.
Cale. was Nascar's ultimate daredevil. He was the Dale Earnhardt or Kyle Busch of his time. He'd do anything anywhere anytime to always be on top at the end of the day.
Cale is the man. I wept when dale died. Cale was hometown hero to me. The first nascar race i attended was crc rebel 500 march 82 or 83 Darlington sc. Backyard to hometown. Back then if we wore our boy scout uniforms the troop was in at no charge. Anyway cale was in valvoline car and struggled all day a lap down. By end of race he had fought back and was in the hunt. With laps winding down and going nuts watching my hero about to win. However a young gun by the name of earnhardt driving wrangler passed cale with a lap or two to go. My memory aint the best from almost 40 years but i want to say it was a last lap photo finish with dale beating cale. That day, my 1st race the torch passed from cale to dale. Wont be a pair of badass drivers in my mind ever grace nascar again like cale and dale. EVER!!!!
i loved dukes of hazzard when i was little. and cale appeared on the show a few times. and so i started watching nascar and cale was my first favorite driver. cause he was friends with the dukes. and i liked nascar cause i so into cars when i was little.

I was born in 89’ I grew up a Jeff Gordon fan.. I had always loved my grandpa telling me stories about Cale. I love these videos of the Ol’ School NASCAR. I miss the mid to late 90’s NASCAR. I still can't believe Richard Petty drove away from Bobby Allison in that race at the end...after only taking on fuel and no tires. Always been a suspicious win by Petty in that one.

I was 11 years old that was my first ever NASCAR race. Darrell Waltrip got hurt that race. I'll always remember the enormous roar of the crowd every lap Richard petty lead until his engine went boom. Around half way through the race

1:43 thus brought about the development of the Monte Carlo SS Aerocoupe. That rear window funneled air down directly on the rear spoiler while also reducing overall drag. Fantastic racers those 80's Monte Carlos.
ShawdowsAndDust every teenager in my neighborhood in the 80s and 90s had one. And they felt compelled to race him on weekends through the residential streets that we lived on I blame NASCAR. ;)
@@kmabru the Lemans was aerodynamically superior to everything, especially the Monte Carlos, that NASCAR penalized it to keep it from beating the Chevys, and then they outlawed it altogether for 2 years.

Other years have nothing to do with these specific models, and not being able to run the car in later years has nothing to do with the years it was outlawed. Go watch, or read, anything about the '81 Daytona 500. The car was better than everything else, and dominated whenever Bobby wanted it to, to the point that NASCAR cut its spoiler in half. Bobby still dominated, but Petty beat him on pit strategy and won. Then NASCAR forced more changes on the car's aerodynamics before Richmond, and finally outlawed it altogether a couple of weeks later. It was outlawed for '81 and '82, and in '83 they let it back on the approved vehicle list figuring the new G-bodies and T-bird made it obsolete and nobody would run it, and then this happened. And yes, Chevy made the Aerocoupe specifically for the Cup series, which is why they only made the minimum number for homologation.

ever since we watched the first live to air Daytona race in 1979, I had become a big Yarborough fan. that week in 1983 was such a roller coaster of emotions as Cale turned the first 200mph lap and then crashed on his second lap. there seemed like there was no shot for him to win the big race that year but he ended up doing it in that Pontiac!
Really wish I could’ve met the man I cheered for as a kid . When I started it was the 79’ race I saw and got me hooked even though he was nearing retirement!! Thank you sir !!
That bump of the spoiler perhaps made all the difference in the world. That small bit of downforce would have been just enough to keep the #28 planted...
Yesterday I watched the 1994 Daytona 500 and throughout the race Larry McReynolds kept bumping up Ernie Irvan's spoiler on every pit stop because Ernie was so loose he could barely hang onto the car. But that's one of the many adjustments that NASCAR has taken away from the teams.
The used to use the old trunk closing mechanism in Lincoln's to flatten the spoilers at full speed to get that 200 mile per hour FYI buy a button in the center console

There's a second story to that one. They ran the Busch Clash the day after qualifying and Cale had no car for that race. He borrowed the #14 bright Coyote Red Monte Carlo of AJ Foyt to use in the Clash. The irony was AJ was working in the broadcast booth for the 50 mile Clash and didn't add much to the broadcast as he was focused on his Daytona 500 race car hoping it wouldn't get wrecked.
The 1983 Daytona Speedweeks and 500 definitely took its toll on some top tier drivers. Cale crashes his new car during qualifying, Bobby Allison crashes in one of the qualifying races. Allison also had to go to a backup car for the race. And Darrell Waltrip with a very hard crash in the race where Waltrip had some injuries as a result.
If I remember right, that Pontiac was driven by Bobby Allison in 1981, and almost won the 500, and I think Benny Parsons drove it in '82, and was the first to qualify at over 200 at Talladega.
Anthony Staten It had a HUGE advantage at Daytona in 81 because it had the sloped rear window. All the other teams complained. It was only allowed to run the first couple races that year or something.
Absolutely love this video and story. Also, as a life long NASCAR fan, I wish for the days when stories like this could happen. I'd settle for drivers who could be celebrated for their driving talent and swagger, and not whether or not they were lucky enough to make each "playoff round." What they failed to mention as this was the car Bobby Allison ran in ,1981 dominated and would have won if not for a late pitstop. The car was also banned after that race.

The Pontiac Lemans wasn't banned several teams ran it during the 1983 season. GM/Chevrolet was leaning on all the teams to run the New Body style Monte Carlo.
Before Earnhardt, there was Yarborough. What a baddass. With the big back window on the Monte, it would have stuck, they just hadn't figured that out yet. Oh, well. At least we have these to watch and remember. Racing now isn't worth the bandwith to broadcast it.

I just completed a book about J.D. McDuffie. Supposedly he wound up with the LeMans and painted it blue and gold with Bailey Excavating as sponsor. The Montes were great looking race cars all by themselves.
Cale was Absolutely fearless....from day one. When he and Ramo Stott got together at Darlington and Cale flew over the wall, even that didn't rattle him either.or the plane wreck with Junior Johnson. Cale was meant to do what he did. If any of today's drivers are looking for someone to look up to, Cale is the man. NOBODY worked harder getting the most out of the car. Drove the first lap as hard as the last lap.....Every single race. I miss him already. GODSPEED CALE.
Years later at a roundtable interview, Cale said the car used as the backup was not actually the car he described in this video. It was however a car they had at the shop that was SLATED to become a show car... but had not actually BEEN displayed anywhere yet.
Back when the cup cars were real good looking race cars. The best looking cup cars were the 80s but then again I am a child of the 80s wonderful times,.....when heavy metal was really gaining ground.
Man those guys were crazy tough. Average over 200mph. They don't even hardly touch 200mph top speed today. I think Bill Elliott went even faster. Man oh man. I loved it back then. I still like it now.

Me too brother, I've had a rare 1980 Grand Am that kind of looks similar but the 1981 LeMans was more streamlined, also have a LeMans Safari (station wagon).
My seven yr old self was upset about the King not grtting the checkered flag that year, but 40 years later i can truly appreciate the 28 team and Cale's driving skills.....
What great times in Nascar racing. Of course we look back and think that these were the days. But the folks who raced in the 60's probably looked at this as "too modern" and "too out of touch" from where it started. Back in the day there was no extra car period. You'd have been done.
That was a great time for the sport GM at the time before 1991 was running all their makes in NASCAR; that was before Brian France made NASCAR into a playoff sport like baseball and other sports I hate they change the formats and rules and they always have spoiled rich kids who have their families get them in to the sport I always pick the legends and veterans over the rookies
It's because there wasn't a contract for teams being required to run one car brand that entire season. As shown there. Cale got a Pontiac back up car and ran Chevys the rest of the season.
Imagine if the Monte Carlo hadn't been wrecked there would have been no need for a last lap pass unless it was Baker trying to get a lap back cause Cale woulda decimated the field...

I've lived here in Daytona and have since 1970. My family and I used to go to all the NASCAR Cup races up until 1985. There was just so much more excitement when you could stand against the catch fence and watch the cars fly by. Or if you were in the infield you could walk out on the grass in turn 3 and watch the cars race by. Now folks....THAT WAS NASCAR RACING. The era before restrictor plates and most definitely when drivers were real race car drivers. Not the whiny overpaid person that can't even say one word without having to mention 20 sponsor names. And one thing is for certain. When a race was started and ended under ONE CHECKERED FLAG...NOT THREE.

He is also still to this day the oldest driver to win the Indy 500. He was less than a week shy of his 48th birthday.

Yesterday I watched the 1994 Daytona 500 and throughout the race Larry McReynolds kept bumping up Ernie Irvan's spoiler on every pit stop because Ernie was so loose he could barely hang onto the car. But that's one of the many adjustments that NASCAR has taken away from the teams.
The Pontiac had a fastback the the MC didn't, that Chevy formal roofline will tend to make the back lift.
The used to use the old trunk closing mechanism in Lincoln's to flatten the spoilers at full speed to get that 200 mile per hour FYI buy a button in the center console

The 83 race was probably one of my favorite 500's...didn't go and it was always blacked out in Florida. Saw it later on tape delay.

There's a second story to that one. They ran the Busch Clash the day after qualifying and Cale had no car for that race. He borrowed the #14 bright Coyote Red Monte Carlo of AJ Foyt to use in the Clash. The irony was AJ was working in the broadcast booth for the 50 mile Clash and didn't add much to the broadcast as he was focused on his Daytona 500 race car hoping it wouldn't get wrecked.

A man of men! That's raceing in its simplest form! Is that not a refreshing story! A childhood hero and his team now against the odds!
The 1983 Daytona Speedweeks and 500 definitely took its toll on some top tier drivers. Cale crashes his new car during qualifying, Bobby Allison crashes in one of the qualifying races. Allison also had to go to a backup car for the race. And Darrell Waltrip with a very hard crash in the race where Waltrip had some injuries as a result.

If I remember right, that Pontiac was driven by Bobby Allison in 1981, and almost won the 500, and I think Benny Parsons drove it in '82, and was the first to qualify at over 200 at Talladega.

Anthony Staten It had a HUGE advantage at Daytona in 81 because it had the sloped rear window. All the other teams complained. It was only allowed to run the first couple races that year or something.

Absolutely love this video and story. Also, as a life long NASCAR fan, I wish for the days when stories like this could happen. I'd settle for drivers who could be celebrated for their driving talent and swagger, and not whether or not they were lucky enough to make each "playoff round." Racing is supposed to be about the team that whoops the field the most, all season long. Period.

The Pontiac Lemans wasn't banned several teams ran it during the 1983 season. GM/Chevrolet was leaning on all the teams to run the New Body style Monte Carlo.

Before Earnhardt, there was Yarborough. What a baddass. With the big back window on the Monte, it would have stuck, they just hadn't figured that out yet. Oh, well. At least we have these to watch and remember. Racing now isn't worth the bandwith to broadcast it.
Sadly, both Dale Earnhardt Sr and now Cale Yarborough have passed away.

I just completed a book about J.D. McDuffie. Supposedly he wound up with the LeMans and painted it blue and gold with Bailey Excavating as sponsor. The Montes were great looking race cars all by themselves.

Cale was Absolutely fearless....from day one. When he and Ramo Stott got together at Darlington and Cale flew over the wall, even that didn't rattle him either.or the plane wreck with Junior Johnson. Cale was meant to do what he did. If any of today's drivers are looking for someone to look up to, Cale is the man. NOBODY worked harder getting the most out of the car. Drove the first lap as hard as the last lap.....Every single race. I miss him already. GODSPEED CALE.

Years later at a roundtable interview, Cale said the car used as the backup was not actually the car he described in this video. It was however a car they had at the shop that was SLATED to become a show car... but had not actually BEEN displayed anywhere yet.

What great times in Nascar racing. Of course we look back and think that these were the days. But the folks who raced in the 60's probably looked at this as "too modern" and "too out of touch" from where it started. Back in the day there was no extra car period. You'd have been done.

That was a great time for the sport GM at the time before 1991 was running all their makes in NASCAR; that was before Brian France made NASCAR into a playoff sport like baseball and other sports I hate they change the formats and rules and they always have spoiled rich kids who have their families get them in to the sport I always pick the legends and veterans over the rookies
It's because there wasn't a contract for teams being required to run one car brand that entire season. As shown there. Cale got a Pontiac back up car and ran Chevys the rest of the season.

The front bumper on the Monte Carlo SS was the best thing I had seen in years. I ended up buying me one in 1984.

I was there for that race. Cale really had everyone fooled until race time.

I've lived here in Daytona and have since 1970.
My family and I used to go to all the NASCAR Cup races up until 1985.
There was just so much more excitement when you could stand against the catch fence and watch the cars fly by.
Or if you were in the infield you could walk out on the grass in turn 3 and watch the cars race by.
Now folks....THAT WAS NASCAR RACING.
The era before restrictor plates and most definitely when drivers were real race car drivers.
Not the whiny overpaid person that can't even say one word without having to mention 20 sponsor names.
And one thing is for certain.
When a race was started and ended under ONE CHECKERED FLAG...NOT THREE.
