A Comparison Of My Different Pa'lante Packs

  • I've been getting a lot of requests asking if I could do a comparison video going over my different Pa'lante Packs. So in this video I share exactly that as I go over my Ultralight, v2, Desert Pack, three different Joey's, and the Sidebag. Along with a look at each, I show the fit of the packs, and some of the trails that I've used them on and some trails I feel they could work best on.
    *Apologies for the few seconds of audio difficulty during the Desert Pack segment. The wind had unexpectedly picked up and I did what I could in effort to preserve everything that was filmed.

    Super helpful video. Loved seeing a side by side comparison and "actual use" perspective of the full line up. Thanks! I want a Joey!

    Thanks so much! Definitely subscribed. Great info. I have the Pa'Lante Desert pack--just go it 12 days ago. Going a little nuts trying to fit even the smallest water bottle or my Android Galaxy AO3S to fit in the shoulder straps. Will the straps give a little over time our should I just carry my water in the side pockets only? Not a huge deal but a bit concerned about the phone storage.
    Also liked your thoughts about the MYOG addition of pockets to your Desert Pack. Please update us if you happen to go that route. Thanks in advance. BTW also liking your Tarp Set Ups. Great good stuff, I must say.

      @jhonyermo Thanks for subscribing and checking out some of my videos. I'm happy that you found them helpful. The Ultra Mesh pockets on the shoulder straps will eventually wear and stretch a little more. I've been able to fit my iPhone 13 Pro in the pockets without any trouble. I'm not sure about the Android phone, but if the dimensions are similar then it should work. It's still tricky to get a water bottle in there, but I always have my bottles in the side pockets so it hasn't bothered me too much. Yeah, for the MYOG I was considering seam ripping the pack and also a Pa'lante Joey and sewing the entire vest strap harness to the Desert Pack. I'll put something out there if I end up doing that. Thanks so much! I love using tarps out on the trail. I'm happy you've been enjoying those setup videos too.

    What one would you recommend for one or two nights camping with a 2 person tent like the nature hike cloud 2?

    Thank you for this nice review! I would like to get the desert pack, but i am a little worried as i do not own the best ultralight gear, would it still be okay to use it, if my usual gear isnt the lightest?

    • @matjobin
      @matjobin  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @AgnesArumetsa Thanks for watching! Don't worry too much about the best gear. The most important thing is to have fun out there. Sometimes the best gear is the gear we already have =). Comfort will vary per individual, but I feel a good limit for this pack would be around 25 lbs with food and water carries included. If out for a thru-hike or multi-day trip and the weight is more than 25, a framed pack might be more suitable.

    Nice comparison. I really like my desert and ultralight pack I do have the exact same as you. I don't see the point of the ultra for their pack because they don't seam tape them and most of their packs don't use ultra where the straps are sewn. I was also surprised that the joey wasn't made of ultra at the very top so maybe there's still a benefit to using ultra but it isn't clear to me. I mean, the main benefit of ultra is the water resistance but if it isn't taped and uses non waterproof fabrics where water could get in, what's the point?

      @matjobin  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @slicesofhikes Thank you! I haven’t had any major issues with water and the packs over the years, but I also always use a pack liner for my quilt and things to be kept dry. No matter what fabric or construction. Water can eventually find its way in somehow. The nylon collar on the Joeys and Ultralight could be due to the stress with the type of closure system, but I could be wrong. I’ve been very happy with Ultra and its durability/water resistance. The pack still works really well in varying conditions and seam sealer is always an additional option if desired.

    So the BV450 will fit inside the ultralight? Doing the JMT and trying to decide what’s the smallest pack I can get and have the bear canister inside.

    • @matjobin
      @matjobin  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @naskofilms4077 It does with a dialed in kit, but space will be limited with it. I have a clip floating around on my channel somewhere in the ‘Shorts’ section where I show a timelapse of packing my Ultralight with the BV450 for 4 days on the Monadnock Sunapee Greenway. For the JMT, I would probably go for something a little larger like the V2. The extra room could be nice but the pack can still roll down pretty small. That trail holds a special place in my heart and was one of my first thru hikes that started my long distance hiking journey. Hope you have a great hike!

    I like the build quality of Palante, but they're missing a few features that have made me steer towards other companies or cottage crafters. I really wish the shoulder strap pockets could fit a litre water bottle.

    • @matjobin
      @matjobin  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @gadblatz4841 The lack of features is one of the things that I’ve enjoyed with the packs 🙂. Though my Nashville Cutaway does have a bit more. Which others have you gone with? For the bottles, I have been able to fit a 1L Smartwater in the top shoulder pockets on all of the Joeys (the pockets are fairly wide) and on my v2. I believe the newer v2 uses the Ultra Mesh for those pockets now though. If so, I don’t think those bottles would fit due to the fact that it is difficult for me to with my Ultralight and Desert Pack that use the same pocket material.

    What size are you ? I don’t know what size to buy between 17 and 19 inches

    • @matjobin
      @matjobin  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @blancmarbe4021 I’m between a 18-19” torso, a little closer to 19”. I mentioned it around the 7:12 mark. I’ve found the 19” Desert and V2 to work best for me with the two size options. The 18” for the other packs in my video rides well too.

      What do you guys find lacking about the straps? Not wide enough? Too thin in the padding?

    • @jakeva9802
      @jakeva9802 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@sqd849 too narrow and no matter how I adjust it there’s a gap between the outer part of the shoulder strap and my shoulders. It causes the inner part of the shoulder straps to really dig in. It doesn’t sit flat if that makes sense.

    The straps for the side bag are too short. I bought one and had to return it. I wanted to use it as a cross-body satchel and have the shoulder and body straps, like a bike messenger bag. Didn’t work. The short straps had the bag riding too high up on my chest. I’m 5’-2”. Don’t know how you got yours to work like that unless they niw come with longer straps.
    The bag itself is also a very narrow depth, so hard to fit a lot in there.
    Again, they may have made changes, otherwise I don’t see how you’re putting much in there.

    • @matjobin
      @matjobin  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @randyholloway920 I don’t have any experience with the earlier versions of the sidebag so I’m not sure if they are different from the one I purchased. I went with the large which I’ve found to have fairly long straps. I’ve been able to fit quite a bit in the bag (see my Ultralight pack video here and skip to the timestamp for the Sidebag in the video description: th-cam.com/video/bSsnjhWdzWk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=d-bXNz56r96RI8ZD). It’s been a great little bag for me so far.

    i make my own packs now, but since they switched to adding binding on the perimeter on the shoulder straps, they’re unbearable imo.

      @matjobin  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @alexhonken Nice! It’s tough to compare anything to a MYOG project. What kind of pack did you end up making?
