    She aspirates the coloratura just a bit (or perhaps is miked very closely), but otherwise she is actually quite vivacious and brilliant in voice and manner. I like it. Pretty, too. All of this adds up to a pretty good Cleopatra in this aria.

    In the beginning is showed two albums. Danielle De Niese's Handel arias and Albrecht Mayer's ablum New Seasons...Well, Ablrecht's New Season includes oboe versions of Handel arias. So, it makes since that they put the two together. But you are right, there is no oboe in this aria, but I think it was beautifully done.

    Agree besides what is the point of having the chance to post comments and discuss about the videos if you can't write any negative point of view? for the most of the people of youtube all the voices are beautiful and all the singers are very talented...if they are merchandised in the right way...just look Sarah Brightman "the best selling soprano"!
    and no Danielle de Niese is not a coloratura

    She seems oddly out of her element trying to sing this. It is murky and lacks the necessary precision and engagement. I prefer the renditions of Amanda Forsythe and Yulia Lezhneva to this, frankly.

    Is not the matter of can or can't sing a piece to give some critic, is about Know about vocal technique, to give a good critc about her singing.
    And I agree with PrimoUomo, her taste is the foremoste thing to critiquein this piece and also her excess of Vibrato

    I suppose we should assume(given that it was an awards show) they thought they would combine two winners in one act?

    Technical perfection is an absolute requirement. Interpretation is quite another matter. Danielle lacks technical perfection and all her enthusiasm, her exuberance, her attractiveness, her youth, her obvious hard work, her dance skills, etc. don't alter the the fact of her lack of technical perfection.

    @RobinHautbois Yet, a singer should also a MUSICIAN before anything.
    Otherwise they are not only an insult to the other musicians who are accompanying them, but they are an insult to the composer and the thousands of singing musicians who came before them.

  • @jasonhurd4379
    @jasonhurd4379 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Not sure why this aria has been rewritten to include an obbligato oboe. I adore Mayer, but this is beyond the pale. And where was the B section? As for de Niese, I give her every credit for tackling this hideously difficult aria. However, her gesticulations and bodily agitations merely increase its difficulties. If she stood still and concentrated on singing properly, she might be able to get through a single phrase without having to take several unnecessary breaths that disrupt the musical line. A major disappointment, and a brazen, crass insult to Händel.

    I think her coloratura is getting better articulated, but no, her top notes aren't the greatest. Her high C (really C#, but this performance is at A=415) did sound really effortful. But I don't think all those top notes are essential in Handel. I don't think Handel wrote any note higher than A in this aria.

  • @lalagonegaga
    @lalagonegaga 15 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well, yes, the vibrato can be a bit distracting at times, but I can survive with that... But my point is this : what both you and I are reffering to seem to be technical problems, while most people here seem to be annoyed by her "stylistically inappropreate" performance. That really pisses me off. So what, if something is not "stylistically appropreate" it cannot be good? Would they also spit on Sills' Cleopatra and Ginevra? Grrr...

    • @jasonhurd4379
      @jasonhurd4379 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Leaving style aside, de Niese's 'performance' was laughably bad. Not one phrase was sung in tune, and she displayed virtually no vocal finesse: no breath control, no real coloratura ability, no chiaroscuro, no dynamic shading, no proper support of the voice...the deficiencies are endless. It was like listening to an eighth-grade talent show. However, she does have a twenty-three inch waist, and her husband is a big 'macher' in the opera world. It's not hard to see why she gets hired.

  • @TomBassettComposer

    I dont like how the oboe player just plays long and out of style just to make sure everyone can hear his note playing. and how he did ornmentation right away in the first phrase. I would have liked to hear it plain one time first.

I mean she will become better and betther within the years, but for a "freshman" in the Opera Buisness she is not bad at all... I´ve heard singers in Opera Houses who were worse. You are perpetuating the philistine modern myth that opera singers of the past were all fat, ungainly, and loud, and thereby excusing Danielle's utter lack of musicianship as being 'modern.' Anna Moffo, Lisa Della Casa, Shirley Verrett, Grace Bumbry, Gwyneth Jones, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Pilar Lorengar, and most importantly Maria Callas were all beautiful, elegant, glamorous ladies and actresses, in addition to being incredibly gifted and intelligent musicians and interpreters.

    Wow, I think she sounds way better than in her Glyndebourne DVD. I guess that's only natural since on that DVD, she'd sung 7 numbers while acting and daning marvelously by the time she sang this aria. If only she sang the whole aria.
    I must quip that I find the oboe really annoying, on the verge of disruptive. I don't even think it's in the score. And of course, that weird cut. Ugh.

  • @roxette521
    @roxette521 15 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Everyone here talks as if they lived during the time of Handel. The truth is baroque opera is a dying and unpopular genre because nobody's allowed to interpret anything, knowing how annoying and small their audience is. This artist dares to feel the music she is given, and lo and behold, people become interested in baroque opera again. Personally, I don't care if the elitist "afficianados" - that can stifle any art form to death - stay behind while the rest of us attempt to experiment.

      Danielle's performances seem to be made outside the barbed wire P.O.W. enclosures many of the above commentators seem to like their music to come from. My musical appreciation is not this sophisticated so I didn't care or even notice if she went out of tune occasionally I simply found her exuberance enchanting even impish, roguishly sexy and so, oh so refreshing.
