Cecilia reminds us that we people have senses and emotions. She feels the music with every particle of her not only physical but also spiritual body and she also presents the music that way. Without any restrictions the resonance flows through her. She reminds us of the beauty of the Infinite. Thank you Cecilia to help people to get rid of their fear of seeing emotions fully expressed let it be by the music, face, body language...
Absolutely beautiful . Bartoli is on of my favourite sopranos and she really puts in a marvellous performance here. Its not only the quality of the sound she creates but also her ability to be expressive , an ability that is essential in operas. The applause goes on for over 2 minutes and is well deserved . Thomas Hampson is also fabulous not only in his singing but the very gentlemanly way he present Miss Bartoli at the end of the aria to the audience. Great performance !
I don't think you people understand this aria at all! It is an attempt by Don Juan (Giovanni) to seduce an "innocent" young bride, and is supposed to be exaggerated for amusing effect. Bartolli expresses the spirit of the piece perfectly, in voice, face and movement while Hampson looks as though he has no idea what is going on, and would rather be anywhere else. Watch Bartolli and Terfel, to see how it should be done.
I've been following Hampson for years. He's just a peerless baritone and a generous artist, to boot. Bartoli is wonderful in her own right. Among the best Bel Canto sopranos, without question.
+Bob Burns The trick is: They are so good that they can get away with anything on a stage. I would have wished Mozart had seen this one. If You are right about Muti holding the stick, then we got a bunch of aggressive artists.Muti got away - handsomely - in Rome with encore of "Va pensiero". But en encore con tutti!!! Including the AUDIENCE! Not only that: But it was so the chorus wept - and the audience flung their tickets so they could not be refunded - before first curtain.
For starters Popp and Moser were much higher voices so its not the same repertoire. I do have a soft spot for Berganza. Flicka lived almost exclusively from Cherubino. So no Cecilia does not compare. I would also not compare her to Kirsten Flagstad. But then again - if You can't take a joke - then Cecilia is not for You.
so much fuss over too much or too little facial expression. close your eyes and just listen to two fine artists. we're so lucky to click a key and hear such wonderful singing
If you had seen Cecelia Bartolli singing with Bryn Terfel at the "98" Richard Tucker Gala, posted earlier, and it seems, withdrawn, you would understand the reactions of the viewers about Thomas Hamson's "wooden stance", in this concert versus her vivacity. She sparkles and emotes, even in a non- operatic setting.....she sings from the heart - Glorious.
Well it's his voice power and skill are which is awesome. Doesn't matter if it's not that beautiful. Not even most singers can do more than he can. Try listening to his other performance.
+Ronaldo Paino I don't know if she is the best, but she can do things nobody could even dream of. And with Thomas Hampson who even Elisabeth Schwarzkopf had praise for (she was an old battleaxe) - he is good and has a beautiful voice. Putting Ci Darem la Mano upside down like this takes charm, chutpa and talent - and get away with it so the orchestra flogs the nodestand with the bows.
Facial expressions or not I couldnt care two hoots. I want to hear great music and I got an auditory festival of great music extremely well sung. Well done folks for sharing your gifts with us.
Very good. Thomas is known as... well, let's call it difficult when it comes to politeness, empathy and good manners in general. Yet, if you don't watch and just listen, it's beautiful. :-)
@amatorynumber- who says he doesn't like women and she doesn't like men? He's been married twice, and is still married. His wife is a countess, I believe. And she's married to a Swiss baritone. Not that it matters if either of them were gay, but why spread false rumors?
Bravo Hampson! This is the way to stop the singers showing off on stage instead of singing! If you leave Bartoli without the opportunity to move, only with "singing" - everybody will hear that she is not able to sing "legato" 2 notes. The great lesson for everyone!
Everyone has their likes and dislikes personally I love cecilia this is not based on great technical knowledge but what pleases the ear and unfortunately some comments about her and others just continue to perpetuate the snobbery associated with opera. Everyone has a right to enjoy what they like and bitchy comments that she is surprised at her rapturous reception because she knows she is not as good as others is totally unfounded.
Well, Gerrit, there aren't that many Danes all together :-) The aria is really sooo well performed with such genuine emotion that I had to shed a tear. "Cecilia Bartoli and Thomas Hampson performing a beautiful arrangement of this famous song." What arrangement? This is how it is written. Famous song? Famous, yes, but it is a duet!
She is second to none! Her expression, how delicate, how not to fall in love with? Amazed! I’m happy that audience recognized that too! Bravo!!!
do not look...listen... wonderful voices...
The aupplause was earned
Cecilia bartoli what a voice! It's as if an angel has come down to Earth to sing amongst us.
She makes me crazy! What a voice, what an artist, what a woman! Viva Italia! Viva la musica!
Cecilia always seems so surprised when an audience likes her, true humility. I adore her voice.
I love Cecilia, she's so expressive in her performances.

Come non amare Mozart con due interpreti così? Splendido !
Cecilia Bartoli: what a wonderful flirt!! Such unparalleled talent and control.
I think this is one of the best performance of this duet!
Cecilia is the expression of our emotions in a great musical talent
Non ho parole di lode per Cecilia Bartoli e' cosi' immaginalmente magnifica!
Magnifique duo . Deux voix superbes un vrai plaisir .

You can say the same about his with Kathleen Battle, Hampson and Bartoli are just performing in different styles
But Bryn Terfel was a whole class better.
Such wonderful and beautiful singing. Hampson could have acted more but his voice is velvet!
Hampson's subtle expressions showed he knew she'd give in. Didn't even have to try. His last smile was "gotcha"!
An absolutely fantastic rendition.
I love their singing. They can sing forever with those beautiful voices.
