What I like so far about the recent game is that you don’t really have to have played the previous titles. Which was a smart move considering the first game came out 14 years ago and few people would replay them all. So long as you know that Kratos is a demigod and killed all the Greek pantheon you’re pretty much good! Obviously his history is more complex, but to appeal to a wider audience this was the best way to handle the story.

They got the ending wrong actually. They said Athena wanted to take Hope to give it to mankind, but that is not true. She wanted to keep it to herself. Kratos decided to release to Hope to mankind instead of giving it to her.

God of War is such a great series in that it reframes the notion of who actually is the true villain... Athena She wanted the hope and power of olympus for herself, so she deceived Kratos over the year into killing all who actually stood in her way of true power. She foresaw the future and usefulness for Kratos early on, which is why she told Ares to spare him as a child when they took Demos. And she is the only God to ever truly give the “how-to’s” and the “who-to-kill-next” missions for Kratos over the course of the series. Kratos is the best anti-hero in that by his own selfish and violent venture for revenge and redemption, he ultimately and unknowingly gives the hope and power back to the people, who have been blindly accepting and worshipping the gods who sat on top of their pedestal of Mt. I'm watching this in 2022 before playing GoW now that it's on PC. That was such an awesome summary. I can only imagine the insane amount of time and effort videos like this take. Props to you and keep putting out valuable content!

I have beat the original game twice on PS2. The Ares fight was difficult, but the Steam Minotaur is the most difficult. I fell in love with God of War. It's the thing where you play the first game and instantly fall in love... Love at first play
I still can't get my head around the fact that kratos is the dude that ended the Greek gods, THE GREEK GODS! How is he not the most famous and strongest fictional character ever? Instead of Superman,Goku, or even Saitama.
Superman can move at faster than light speed, and can punch a planet so hard it shatters. Not even all the greek gods combined could do that. Kratos is piss weak compared to superman. Superman can literally kill kratos by looking at him (he can literally incinerate people). Kratos is strong within his own universe, but not compared to other mythical characters. That's why.

When God of War (2018) was announced I was saying to myself it's going to be interesting to see how he survived his wounds and how the current setting of God of War came about and ultimately what is his new purpose in the new game coming out April 20th. Is this god reviving the daughter? 5:30 - how can Kratos go up against Atlas and the queen of underworld if he gave his god-like powers up to see his daughter? 5:48 - why does Atlas hold the world on his shoulders? I know he’s chained in there but can’t he still drop it as he and queen of underworld originally planned? 5:53 - why does Kratos commit himself to losing his memory again? Did the option of seeing his daughter (revived or otherwise) get taken away from him when the queen of underworld died? 9:30 - “the gods will pay for this” is Kratos referring to the god of death killing his brother? Or just the general shit they’ve been throwing his way? 10:50 - why was Kratos rescued by Gia and why did he help Kratos her revenge? 11:00 - again, how can Kratos have so much power if he put it all in the blade of Olympus before Zeus killed him? Is he just less powerful but still powerful enough as a mortal to defeat this foes on the island of creation? 11:45 - why do the titans wish to help defeat Olympus and the gods? I’m guessing Kratos could not beat Zeus after accidentally killing Athena, which is why he has to gather an army of titans? 12:30 - why does pandora want to sacrifice herself to extinguish the flame of Olympus? Sorry for the vast amount of questions asked, I just want a really detailed understanding of the backstory for Kratos really. I know some of these questions may not be answerable due to plot holes but any insight at all would be much appreciated! Thanks!!

What a journey. I don't think a series or movie can capture the spectacular colossal over the top moments that the game has had. I'm more than Happy with the latest game sequels and I can always look back replay and remember

Thanks for this. Im playing GOW 2018 and its my first time playing one, because I watched this before hand, a lot of little easter eggs made sense to me, plus the big pay off with him getting his weapons back
As someone who had played ALL the prior GoW games, I was jumping with excitement when I realized we were going back to retrieve his chaos blades. Up until that point in the 2018 game it didn’t quite fully feel like God of War. The puzzles and fantastic level designs were certainly very God of War-like. Kratos’s mannerisms were much more subdued than I was used to, but was fitting for a much older version of him. The Epic battle at the very start of the game was keeping with the tradition of early epic battles (though it wasn’t nearly as epic as previous ones had been). BUT….. as soon as Kratos retrieved the Chaos blades… That was when it REALLY felt like a God of War game. (Don’t get me wrong, I was still thoroughly enjoying the game up to that point. But that moment was such an awesome feeling to finally be able to return to that familiar feeling, unleashing the full power of Kratos. Very well done… it sure got me geeking out big time)
Plot points I did not get: 1) Why did Kratos make a deal with Aries when he was the one who killed Damos? 2) Why did Athena want Aries to die? 3) Why did Kratos not take revenge on Athena for using him (saying she will erase his memories if he kills Aries)? 4) Athena says she cant let Kratos forget his sins but saves him and makes him a God. 5) Why is Damos angry at Kratos? 6) Zeus doesn't do anything on hearing his son Aries' death. 7) Athena says "A son can't kill his father" but lets zeus kill kratos (his son), uses Kratos to kill Aries (their brother), lets Aries kill damos (their brother). A whole lot of family killings.
1. Kratos made a deal because he thought serving the gods will convince them to get him rid of his memories. 2. Idk 3. Athena said something along the lines of- "It is impossible to get rid od your memories" instead of "I'm not gonna do it". Plus, when he killed himself, it was basically a revenge on Athena because he realised she wanted to keep the power of hope for herself and was lying about giving it to mankind but by killing himself he actually gave it to mankind himself. Athena is basically the villain of the entire series, even worse than Zeus or Ares. 4. She made him a god so she could use him later on. 5. Damos was angry at Kratos for failing at saving him when they were kids. 6. Zeus never cared about any of his kids he basically had thousands of them and only cared if they were on his side. 7. Yes, Athena is a bitch. Zeus killed his dad Kronos as well. She only said it because she didn't want Zeus to die either.

Little part of me actually believes it .. i believe kratos, and somehow I can feel him- my mind jumps to different realms when i see this- as if it was reall ...also this is why i love God so much . Um . . . Athena did NOT promise to end Kratos' nightmares in the original GOW. She only promised him forgiveness for the deaths of his wife and daughter. He *inferred* that this meant an end to the nightmares. Athena kept her promise; it's just not the promise Kratos thought he heard.

THANK YOU! I've (sadly) never played or watched any of God of War but I've been interested in it really much. Now, as the new God of War came out, I finally started playing it and that is a really good summary to understand the backstory. Thank you! :)

Hey so I’ve got a few questions regarding this video. I’ve put time stamps next to each question as they’re in reference to these specific points.
5:00 - how did Kratos get God-like powers to begin with if he was just a man that made an oath to Ares?
5:00 - how can queen of underworld reunite Kratos with his fallen daughter? Is this god reviving the daughter?
5:30 - how can Kratos go up against Atlas and the queen of underworld if he gave his god-like powers up to see his daughter?
5:48 - why does Atlas hold the world on his shoulders? I know he’s chained in there but can’t he still drop it as he and queen of underworld originally planned?
5:53 - why does Kratos commit himself to losing his memory again? Did the option of seeing his daughter (revived or otherwise) get taken away from him when the queen of underworld died?
9:30 - “the gods will pay for this” is Kratos referring to the god of death killing his brother? Or just the general shit they’ve been throwing his way?
10:50 - why was Kratos rescued by Gia and why did he help Kratos her revenge?
11:00 - again, how can Kratos have so much power if he put it all in the blade of Olympus before Zeus killed him? Is he just less powerful but still powerful enough as a mortal to defeat this foes on the island of creation?
11:45 - why do the titans wish to help defeat Olympus and the gods? I’m guessing Kratos could not beat Zeus after accidentally killing Athena, which is why he has to gather an army of titans?
12:30 - why does pandora want to sacrifice herself to extinguish the flame of Olympus?
Sorry for the vast amount of questions asked, I just want a really detailed understanding of the backstory for Kratos really. I know some of these questions may not be answerable due to plot holes but any insight at all would be much appreciated! Thanks!!
Surds Quadratics To answer question 1, Kratos’ father was Zeus, so he was already a demigod. He was part mortal and part god, making him stronger than regular mortals.
When he reunited with his daughter he had to give up all godly powers. So when he forsake his daughter he gained all of them again.
Atlas is chained to the task of holding up the world, he can’t drop it. But if he could like you said he could, everyone would die, including Atlas.
Kratos committed himself to losing the nightmares because they had been plaguing him all of his life. When he forsake his daughter, he could never see her again.
Kratos blames all the gods for what happens in his life; his goal is to kill all the gods.

Wow I had no idea the story was actually this good. I was expecting some basic story of him killing all the gods but this makes me way happier to play/watch GoW PS4
What a journey. I don't think a series or movie can capture the spectacular colossal over the top moments that the game has had. I'm more than Happy with the latest game sequels and I can always look back replay and remember

Thanks for this. Im playing GOW 2018 and its my first time playing one, because I watched this before hand, a lot of little easter eggs made sense to me, plus the big pay off with him getting his weapons back
I'm also currently playing Gow 2018 and it's my first and those blades are amazing
As someone who had played ALL the prior GoW games, I was jumping with excitement when I realized we were going back to retrieve his chaos blades. Up until that point in the 2018 game it didn’t quite fully feel like God of War.
The puzzles and fantastic level designs were certainly very God of War-like. Kratos’s mannerisms were much more subdued than I was used to, but was fitting for a much older version of him.
The Epic battle at the very start of the game was keeping with the tradition of early epic battles (though it wasn’t nearly as epic as previous ones had been).
BUT….. as soon as Kratos retrieved the Chaos blades… That was when it REALLY felt like a God of War game.
(Don’t get me wrong, I was still thoroughly enjoying the game up to that point. But that moment was such an awesome feeling to finally be able to return to that familiar feeling, unleashing the full power of Kratos. Very well done… it sure got me geeking out big time)

Plot points I did not get:
1) Why did Kratos make a deal with Aries when he was the one who killed Damos?
2) Why did Athena want Aries to die?
3) Why did Kratos not take revenge on Athena for using him (saying she will erase his memories if he kills Aries)?
4) Athena says she cant let Kratos forget his sins but saves him and makes him a God.
5) Why is Damos angry at Kratos?
6) Zeus doesn't do anything on hearing his son Aries' death.
7) Athena says "A son can't kill his father" but lets zeus kill kratos (his son), uses Kratos to kill Aries (their brother), lets Aries kill damos (their brother). A whole lot of family killings.
1. Kratos made a deal because he thought serving the gods will convince them to get him rid of his memories.

3. Athena said something along the lines of- "It is impossible to get rid od your memories" instead of "I'm not gonna do it". Plus, when he killed himself, it was basically a revenge on Athena because he realised she wanted to keep the power of hope for herself and was lying about giving it to mankind but by killing himself he actually gave it to mankind himself. Athena is basically the villain of the entire series, even worse than Zeus or Ares.
4. She made him a god so she could use him later on.
5. Damos was angry at Kratos for failing at saving him when they were kids.
6. Zeus never cared about any of his kids he basically had thousands of them and only cared if they were on his side.
7. Yes, Athena is a bitch. Zeus killed his dad Kronos as well. She only said it because she didn't want Zeus to die either.

1.kratos used to be a spartan captain and one day he was fighting the barbarians,but his army was massacred and the king was about to kill kratos,in that moment kratos called ares,ares killed the barbarians in exchange for his soul also kratos didn't kill deimos,thanatos did
2.the reason why athena wanted ares to die is because ares invaded her city athens,also ares and athena had a huge rivalry both in greek mythology and real world history among their followers

Idk if this makes any sense... But I don't see god just as a game ... I feel the Greek myth . Little part of me actually believes it .. i believe kratos, and somehow I can feel him- my mind jumps to different realms when i see this- as if it was reall ...also this is why i love God so much . Because idk how i can relate and feel it deeply.

Um . . . Athena did NOT promise to end Kratos' nightmares in the original GOW. She only promised him forgiveness for the deaths of his wife and daughter. He *inferred* that this meant an end to the nightmares. Athena kept her promise; it's just not the promise Kratos thought he heard.
