I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since this interview. I never heard of the series until I stumbled upon the show. I just finished The Magicians Land and now I’m obsessed with him. Can’t wait to see his screenwriting.

Love The Magicians! One of the best books i have read in a long time. Love that it is so different. And the image of The Beast has stayed with me and freaked me out for weeks now. Thank you Lev Grossman!

I absolutely loved The Magicians. I've never read a book quite like it. I finished it last night, and I couldn't sleep because I couldn't stop thinking about it. Yes, it's filled with misery and can be very depressing, but Lev Grossman makes it work. I can't pretend that it wasn't hard to read (the sheer frustration of reading about such silly, contemptible, pitiable, characters), but I still enjoyed it immensely.

WOW! I must be one of the first to read your book and comment on it. I enjoyed it very much and I am very happy for you as I read in some material on you that you always read fantasy but never felt quite up to the task of writing your own book. I like you am a big lover of fantasy and I i have read all kinds of fantasy and I found your book very fresh and entertaining. I also listened to it too. I often do both. I read and listen to the audio version and both are very good. Congratulations!

I hated this book a lot. Unreadable and wholly unlikeable characters, coupled with a long and overcomplicated plot, make for a really boring story that leaves you feeling drained and empty. It tries very hard to be a different kind of fantasy novel (one with real characters struggling with real issues), but all it amounts to is dreariness. I would be able to put that aside and take it as a literary experiment, but it just isn't that well written to begin with.

Ik you probably don't even use this account anymore or remember even making this comment but I think that that was the whole point of the book. Everything Quentin ever wanted was magic. He found magic (exactly what he deeply desired) and yet he quickly realized that it wasn't as "magical" (for lack of a better word) as he had hoped. A great quote from the TV series which shows this (yes, ik, the show is very different from the books but I think that this is applicable here) is:
"You ever want something so badly and then realize that it's nothing like what you thought? And maybe that you are stupid for ever actually even wanting it?"
