You know I'm not a fan of Mustafa, but it's hard to watch how he's vulnerable and experiences the loss of his father's love - while in this matter he has no fault.
I think that historically Hurrem was the first titled Haseki, in the show they started calling Mahidevran that in the very first episodes. I believe she never had that title in real life. that or the Valide Sultan title (although her son would obviously call her that behind closed doors)
Mahidevran has a haseki status in the show itself, it's not something she made up for them to respect her more. That is further confirmed by other episodes and by Valide and SS calling her haseki, as well. (SS called her that in E10, Valide all the time, I doubt it's just favoritism, since SS couldn't care less, while Valide loves tradition and wouldn't elevate anyone above their official harem title.)
I may side with Hurrem but I never hate Mustafa. I never wish him anything bad. It's all Mahidevran who poisons her own son against everybody. If only Mustafa was born by Hurrem, there wouldn't be any headache like this.
Honestly, it's part of why one of my favorite alternate timelines for the show is imagining the guardianship of Mustafa being passed to Hurrem after Mahidevran's role in the poisoning is revealed. It's fascinating to consider how much both their lives would've changed.

There is one episode in which Mustafa saves Selim from the hand s of the Janassiries / soldiers. And when he returns back with Selim, Hurrem tells Mustafa that she wished Mustafa was her son instead of Mahidevran's . Even Hurrem understood and respected his worth. She understood that he would be a righteous Sultan. But she had to go against him as she knew that if Mustafa became the sultan, Mahidevran will poison him against his brothers and manipulate him into killing them.
