    Many hunters have vacuum sealers. I've gotten to the point where I vacuum seal most of my shells when I'm on paddle hunts in sets of 6-7 so that I can keep them sealed and dry in the boat even when everything else seems to go wrong. I tear open single packs at a time so I don't have issues with rusting from the salt marsh or being soggy when the dog gets water deep enough in the boat to saturate my blind bag.

    The hooks are for getting lures that are snagged unsnagged.

    The notch in the paddle is a line notch. Used for removing lure snags or, in your case, grabbing decoy lines

    I like to run two bags. Main boat bag, then a smaller bag within that one I can just grab for the pirogue. But it doesn’t have anything I don’t need in little boat.

    Good info. I have yet to hunt out of a canoe, or kayak, but it does look appealing.

    Dude I'm so glad you're making this series right now with the experiences you got from last season. This year will be my first season that I plan on hunting from a kayak a ton and your videos are some of the best material I've come across for how to do it/what you need. Thanks!

    To anybody contemplating hunting from a kayak, please do it safely with as little risk as possible. Realize the risk of heavy clothes, waders, moving water, gear and especially cold water. I know these tubers make it look so cool to promote their channel but no bird is worth dying for. Duck hunting can be dangerous in the best of times.
    RIP to those lost here in WI this season.

    Hmmm think i will make a notch in my paddle. Last season I used a 17 ft aluminum canoe , painted it camo and covered it with camo net . Had a couple of good hunts . Getting in and out of it was tough in water that was a couple feet deep. Dog needed help getting in when retrieving. So i need some kind of ladder or step.

    Great video with some awesome information this up coming season will be my 2nd season kayak hunting it’s by far my favorite way to hunt. Although here we don’t have the vegetation like you have we use sand bars on the river that have grass to hide on it makes setting decoys easier though because you can just jump out of the kayak

    How i secure my duck boat is a Trolling motor mount bracket and a fiber glass dowel

    Lost a cousin two years ago. Boat capsized and drowned. No life jacket on. Always wear your life jackets while motoring or paddling, fellas. Stay safe. Great video as always.

    Just something I found when researching this topic in regard to waders in a boat. Lots of people preach against it due to the unnecessary aspects and safety. I am likely going to wear mine to keep dry but if you hunt open lakes or bigger bodies of water where you cant stand or reach shore easy you do risk them filling up in the event you take an unexpected swim. I figured the safety belt and pfd would keep me afloat and the waders from scooping up water when trying to reenter the kayak from the water. This is just some info that gave me pause, wet/dry suits are also recommended for cold water. I plan to have super hand warmer packs on hand as well as emergency clothes and blanket if I dont get some kind of wet/dry suit. I think common sense can be exercised with this just remember the risks and take precautions to stay safe.

      Ive personally have fallen thru the ice lucky my yak was near and i grabbed it i hunt salt water marshes and we get a 4.5 ft tide swing the only issue i had was my boots trying to float up i had to keep them down

      Neoprene waders will float you not so sure about breathables

      I usually pull my wader straps down off my shoulders (wear them like pants instead of overalls) before putting on a lifejacket so I can bail from the waders if necessary to swim

    Great vid and excellent channel. Do you use a shotgun leash? I made mine out of paddle leash material with a loop of paracord on each end. One of my biggest fears in the case of a swim would be to loose my shotgun. Everything in my kayak either floats or is tethered. And I carry multiple knives on me in case of entanglement while overturned and swimming.

      Soak your divers in pineapple juice for 24 - 72 hours before cooking and they will taste as good as any duck out there. It even makes mergansers taste good.

      Neoprene floats. If you have a bunch of shells and stuff in your pockets that could possibly weigh you down enough though. Wear a PFD, better to have a never need it.

    But this is a canoe. Not to be critical, but canoes and kayaks are very different.

  • @scattabrain

    NEVER wear waders in a canoe/kayak...if you bail you will be dragged to the bottom as they fill with water.

    • @JewportMenthols
      @JewportMenthols 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are tripping man. Remaining dry is a necessity while duck hunting especially with a Kayak or Canoe. I throw my decoys right in my lap. If you tip your canoe with or without waders if you dont panic and are wearing a PFD like you should you will float just like all things in this world do. Quit perpetuating old wives tales, I hope no one takes your comment as truth.

    • @scattabrain
      @scattabrain 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Timothy Allen, key words...if you don’t panic. Once water gets in them it’s going to make it a hell of a lot heavier to get out...even if you’re not panicking, water is still heavy.

    • @JewportMenthols
      @JewportMenthols 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@scattabrainlittle Water in waders or not you are still buoyant. When have you ever taken in enough water to fill your waders? The highest tip risk in a kayak while duck hunting is easily getting in/out of the boat (I know because admittedly I have messed up and done it a couple of times) which means you are in shallow water. Unless you are getting attacked by a wild animal or hunting during a a heavy storm (which is a bad idea) I just don't see this scenario you got cooked up in your head likely of happening. The advantages of wearing Waders while duck hunting far exceed the negatives. In all my years every guy I've seen hunt out of a kayak or canoe wears waders just like guys who use boats while duck hunting. I'm not gonna call your idea stupid but you have the unpopular opinion in this disagreement here. The rest of us prefer to be dry on this side man, don't really care if you joint I just think it's irresponsible to push this idea to new hunters.

    • @scattabrain
      @scattabrain 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Timothy Allen I frequently have to paddle over deeper parts of lakes to get to hunting spots. The deeper water is where the concerns lie. I agree you’re more than likely find if your never in deep water. There are other ways to stay dry without waders. I mean you can do it without having to get out of your canoe kayak. It’s just a word of warning man.

  • @jimf1964
    @jimf1964 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That's a PFD, or personal flotation vest. It is NOT a lifesaver. If you're unconscious, like you mentioned, and wearing a PFD, you will likely die. Life savers have most of the flotation in front, and behind the neck, to roll you over on your back and keep the head out of the water.
    That's also a canoe, not a kayak, just because you use a kayak paddle in a canoe, does not make it interchangeable. They are very different boats, for very different purposes.
    You also put in more adds than a sitcom.
    Using a small boat to get to a good location and retrieve, is a great idea, but learn your topic. Language isn't optional.
