I"m Surprised so many people never listened to his Pleasure Stuff I'll throw out more hints look up Pleasure 1979 albums. If you want some challenging thought bass lines....!!! Nate Phillips created some of the best, particularly outside of jazz...at that time period...
A legend! One of the best riff players ever. To my mind up there with Marcus Miller and Mark Adams for consistently creating grooves that elevate a track and become reference points for many who take up the four strings. To read a post that Nate Phillips lacks technique is frankly laughable. Its not just about the high watermak left by Glide, its the quality of the body of work for Pleasure and other artists. Listen to the licks on "No Matter What" (Pleasure - Get To The Feeling ) and you have the reason why he and Bruce Carter (Drums) were booked by Bobby Lyle to anchor the groove on the track "Rhap So Dee" (Night Fire album).
Are you hip to "Selim"(from the "Joyous" lp, by Pleasure)? They were the backing band also for Ronnie Laws on the "Fever" album, from 1976. And as far as I'm concerned whatever he did with Pleasure from the mid to the late 1970s is a treasure to have for listening to-especially if you are a bass player! 9-1-24.
And the thing about it-he's known for his accomplishments but as you've said, is still, in spite of his accomplishments/track record, not spoken of or held in the same esteem as lesser talented bassists! Go figure! 9-1-24.
i met Mr. Phillips decades ago in NYC, when he played at The Bottom Line I believe it was, in 1995, with the shortly for a time reformed Crusaders(and no, Joe Sample was not with them); after the gig, I went back to the dressing room and introduced myself; told him I had followed his career since the album called "Joyous" by Pleasure-we also talked about the phenomenal Louis Johnson, and then we talked about his days with Pleasure; he then demonstrated how he played the bass on a cut called "Dance To The Music"-I was wowed-truly he is a gifted and in my opinion, anointed musician and I considered myself fortunate to have met him in person when I did. Hope he's still playing('cause there's not many like him anymore), and if so, would like to see him do an album of serious funk, playing like he's doing in this video above! 9-1-24; amended 9-2-24.
Listen, I always thought that Nate was the bomb back in the day when he played with Pleasure. I also know about his work with Ronnie Laws. His bass is tight! I'm a bassist myself, and I can say this: if anyone has followed Nate, they would know how he plays! He's the s**t! No doubt about it! For all upcoming bassists, myself included, research who he played with. He has amazing bass lines for anyone to comp. Check him out! As said about Nate, I'll say about other bassists. Check out their work, and what they're doing now. There's a lot to explore. Catch up to you later in my next comment. Ciao!
Do you know who Nate Phillips is...? Look up the group Pleasure song - Glide, Universal, and it's that Nate Phillips....who invented those bass lines. Probably only second to Bernard Edwards Good times bass line......
I had the privilege of working with Nate Phillips on several projects over the years and I can assure you Nate is short on nothing - talent, technique, timing, tone or otherwise.
Now 👉 we cooking with some good hot ass 🦾 grease. This is what I'm🗣️ speaking of this is some smooth professional funky funk funk smoking 🚬 smoking 🚬 back to the funk study 🕵️
Nate is one of the best if not the best Bass player ever, I'm sorry, Mark Adams is one of My favorite bassist's ever i don't know i kinda like Nate better, I hate to say that about Mark Adams.
All due respect to this talented bassist but that "so-low" would have been good back in the early to mid 60's before Stanley Clarke, Jaco, Anthony Jackson and Louise Johnson came on the scene. But besides all of the noisy, sloppy and frivolous licks, preacher pauly's dance steps and distorted ruckus it was a pretty good solo for a 5th grader.
Get that 🎉
Definitely one of the baddest bassplayers out there! He is one of my influences!
Sick ass bass, sick ass tone and sick ass funk!!
A man and his Bass Guitar very enjoyable
Simply captivating. And even that undersells it.
One of the best bass players on the planet but he does not get the credit that he deserves.
You're right! 9-1-24.
Great call, nexusvision! Glide -- one of the nastiest, thickest bass lines of all time. THAT Nate Phillips. Glide on by.
We just saw him perform in STL with Richard Elliott and also with Jonathan Butler…….he killed it!! Ya’ll better ask somebody.
my favorite bass player of all time...
Legend!

Yup.....I've always referenced those 2 along w/ Slave's "Slide" as the top 3.
Also Buddy Hankerson made notorious basslines.
I had the privilege of working with Nate Phillips on several projects over the years and I can assure you Nate is short on nothing - talent, technique, timing, tone or otherwise.
Idolized...
duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude

at the end, a few seconds of "Red baron" last track in Spectrum, Billy Cobham. Should be Marcus Miller version.
Alex Al is my favorite
Way to find that pocket and exploit it!
I just came to hear Glide🚬
Why he do an Indian dance during his solo hahaha lol ...Real talk he's nice on bass!!
Enough of the antics. Play some real bass.

This isn't "all due respect" it's disrespect!
