    For a long time I oversaw the Overbridge from Elektron. It was always too complex for me and I had a hard time to fit it into my workflow. Until the moment I discovered the standalone Digitakt application and came up with some tricks on how to finish tasks faster with Overbridge! I also found the way how to finish tracks in Ableton!
    It this video I cover a topic of recording a track made on the Digitakt with a Modular Synth connected to it. It is a tutorial that explains: how to use Overbridge with Elektron Digitakt, how to mix Digitakt recording in Ableton, how to recreate Digitakt effects in Ableton, how to replicate trigger licks in Ableton, and some more!
    Also in this video I do a little Techno Jam on the Digitakt!

    🌍 Hello World! My name is Ihor.
    This is my channel where I share my experiences, ideas, reviews and tutorials related to Electronic Music Production. I focus mostly on Techno and House music. In my Studio on my Music Production Desk you will find a variety of different gear like: digital and analog synth, eurorack modular, drum machine, sampler, effect, mixer, guitar pedal, MIDI controller. Also software: DAW, Ableton, VST, plugins.
    I am myself an engineer and I am quite obsessed with the Music Technology and Sound Design. I like making music without a computer. I like playing Electronic Music Live with my Minimal Dawless Setup. I love Eurorack Modular Techno and always keen to talk about the modular workflow.
    I strongly believe that nothing can be better than a good Dawless Techno Jam!
    I watched all the Techno Tutorials on TH-cam! (I think)
    📺 Thanks for watching! And have fun!
    ✌️ Peace.

    This is absolutely 100% what I needed! So I use the Octatrack as my main performance mixer and this gave me the idea to change my configuration around so my Octatrack sends in to my Syntakt rather than the other way around for recording. This is opposite from my setup when performing and made the whole recording experience so much smoother!

    I love the standalone audio recording, but I wish it had two important features: 1) sync to Digitakt so that recording starts immediately upon pressing play on Digitakt, and 2) the ability to also sync with other standalone overbridge VSTs like Digitone, so that you could have them both midi synced and recording simultaneously when hitting play on whichever you choose as the transport master.

    • @IhorMedia
      @IhorMedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I haven't even thought about recording and syncing a few devices. It makes total sense! For that I think using DAW is necessary, but I have not tried this yet. Thanks for kicking in!✌️

      Hi I get around issue 1 by making my 1A pattern on the Elektron box a 4x4 pattern with only a rimshot or kick..etc. I then just select all the WAV files from the machine in the DAW and use that beginning part to slide the files so they are lined up to the grid. I think not having the sync to the app is a good thing since we are just relying on the internal clock of the machine, which is ideal, imo. For part 2, but for that I would sync the Digitone to the Digitakt via DIN MIDI cable.

    IIRC in the Digitakt (also Syntakt and Digitone) there's a way to configure the audio routing in Settings so that the Main Output track recorded into Overbridge are the effects returns ONLY. That means that in the Main Output track via Overbridge, you aren't recording the source tracks that are sending to delay/reverb + chorus on Digitone... you are only recording the return signal from those effects. So essentially the Main Output track recorded in Overbridge becomes an effects return track that preserves any p-locked effects etc you've included in the track. No need then to replicate the effects from scratch in Ableton Live.

    • @xxerox808

      That’s basically the ideal scenario. Any pointers as to how you do this? Will investigate.

      @@xxerox808 p72 of the manual (cdn.www.elektron.se/media/downloads/digitakt/Digitakt_User_Manual_ENG_OS1.50_230303.pdf) key section is Audio Routing / Route To Main. If you disable all 8 tracks from sending audio to the main output when using Overbridge, the Main Output channel in Overbridge becomes a clean FX return only.

    I'm getting a digitakt soon and have been watching basically every video on overbridge that I can find and your workflow for recreating the effects sends in the DAW got me thinking about a second possible solution.
    Overbridge allows you to record all of the parameter knob movements from the digitakt as midi (Dave mech's overbridge/Ableton video shows how to configure this).
    Instead of multitrack recording directly with overbridge standalone, configure your DAW to record the audio directly via the overbridge VST.
    Then, If you tell the overbridge plugin to record the delay and reverb parameter values as midi while you record/perform, you should be able to simply copy this midi info as automation to the DAW send effects. In this way you get your exact performance recorded and substitute the DAW sends for the digitakt sends.
    If you want to rearrange elements in the song, you no longer have to worry about the pre-baked recorded effects not matching the modified audio arrangement.
    So you get a true hybrid setup.

      @eeddddddddd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Im exploring the idea of getting one and also looking at overbridge videos for the same reason... So I guess it would be just the external synth audio you'd need to capture?

    • @nano_chad

      @@eeddddddddd you can route the synth to the input on the digitakt and record everything via overbridge

      Overbridge is great in theory but from my experience, getting it to work properly with Ableton is near impossible. The thing crashes all the time. Plus, you can't sequence VSTs with the DT while using OB. OBs' manual explicitly says to turn off all the midi options for the DT in Ableton while using OB

    • @nano_chad
      @nano_chad 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nano_chad you didnt understand what he said. He said you cant sequence on the DT while sequencing it in overbridge in ableton. If you're not sequencing the digitakt and just using midi then sure. But thats not really overbridge.

  • @azimpradhan
    @azimpradhan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Thanks for the great content! I tried out this feature - recording directly using the digitakt app. In my case, I have a digitakt controlling my digitone as well as a hardware syth. So I ended up using both the digitone and digitakt apps and routed the output of the synth to the digitakt. After recording I lined up the digitone and digitakt tracks because there is no way to start recording at the same time. Once I did that the audio was in sync. However, the audio that sounds in sync is only in sync with each other. By setting the tempo in ableton, I saw that the ableton tempo did not match up with the tempo of the recording. The recording sounds in sync but because of the setup it is never truly in sync with a global bpm. This makes it difficult if you want to add time-based effects or edit a specific section, because it does not line up with the ableton grid.
    So I then ended up trying both the digitakt and digitone vst. plugins. I was able to record a live performance (tweak parameters, mute tracks, etc) and everything lined up to the ableton grid. So I guess in conclusion, if you are using just the digitakt, then I think your method should work, but if you are using multible overbridge devices, then maybe try using the vst plugin

    • @IhorMedia
      @IhorMedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      VST plugins are awesome too! And since in your scenario Ableton provides the clock it will indeed line up correctly.

    You'll get better quality by mixing all your tracks louder inside Digitakt, instead of increasing 15db (!!) of gain later on Ableton. Besides the decrease in quality during DA conversion, you're also increasing the noise floor. Great video, thank you!

    • @IhorMedia
      @IhorMedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for watching! Most of the times I'd mix on the Digitakt, but not because of noise floor or loudness. Just because I like doing this right inside of the box. However the point of this video was exactly the opposite. I was showing the way of multitracking, seamlessly recording and processing tracks after.
      Now to your points about loudness and noise. First of all loudness is relative. Especially in the digital world. I don't know how would I lose on quality if DT records every track more quietly. Especially considering the fact that there is one and only DA in use, the one in the Digitakt itself. And we are talking about just 15dB. Noise floor? I've never noticed it in the Digitakt. Not on master, neither on any of the tracks while multitracking. But the thing is that technically there is nothing in it that can create any noticeable noise. So technically it is even better to use Overbridge to have less noise, because it removes any analog audio processing from the chain. Another thing here is that Overbridge by design records all the tracks with -12dB of headroom. Which is useful and safe for future mixing and processing.

      But long story short: I think they do overlap, but still are quite different tools. What I think is that the Octatrack is made for live performance. You can definitely finish tracks on DT easier, but performing them on OT will be much more fun and flexible.
      Basically TLDR they both find their place in my studio.

    Yep that is more or less the way too go. I just record directly in ableton. You can record to separate ableton tracks. You only need to adjust the starting point a little bit. Just leave some room in the beginning. And warp them from the correct starting point. Is also quite easy

    • @IhorMedia
      @IhorMedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It all depends on the workflow, right? For me recording into Ableton requires a little bit more time and organisation. But with this standalone thing I don't even need to have an Ableton project. I can just record stems and save them for some other session in the future. It kinda removes Ableton from recording process and it is what I like about it.
      However if you are planning to work in Ableton immediately after recording you perhaps better record it directly there.
      Thanks for kicking in and your comment! ✌️

    Thanks, love your clear explanations. This is all good but what I really would love is to also sequence vets from the Digitakt's sequencer. This works by transmitting on a midi channel but there's latency, which I cannot get rid of! - and the midi delay compensation doesn't work with OB on. I must be missing something because this seems like a straight forward and obvious use case. It would be amazing if I could sort this. Anyone have any advice?

      Hey! Glad it was helpful! I have't used the Digitakt as an interface, neither I used any other interface. This is the whole point actually. With Overbridge app you record the whole thing multitrack and without worrying about any interface.
      Like I mentioned at 23:42 There is a way to maintain delay and reverb. You have to route all 8 tracks out of master track in the Digitakt settings. In that way the master track will record only effects. And you will remain able to record all the 8 tracks separately.

    I really need to watch this a couple more times; but you're solving an issue that I talked out with Sweetwater and they didn't get what I was trying to explain - you do. The idea that an external piece (synth, pedal, etc) could be "introduced back to the daw or standalone via usb" was the question. In this video, you explained that the takt *IS* the interface and you need only "feed" the sound (synth, effect, etc) to it first and back into the computer via Overbridge. Awesome. Thank you! BTW - is that true for the Digitone as well?

      It really depends how to look at the Octatrack. Finishing everything in Ableton is much better, right? But is Ableton better for performing live? Or jamming? Not really. I think of the Octatrack as Ableton for live performance. If that makes sense.

    • @IhorMedia
      @IhorMedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The answer is Overbridge. You mentioned virtual (or soft) synths. So, you can use the Digitakt like a soft synth (or a plugin) in Ableton. And this is going to cover everything to bring the Digitakt into Ableton set, including latency. You kinda run it from Ableton, but perform on the Digitakt itself. Which is cool. You need one power cable and one USB cable.
      Routing from Ableton into DT I'm not sure if this possible. On Rytm and Syntakt it is possible for sure. DT I don't know really.

      Hey Mike! You can't get levels over MIDI, my friend. MIDI is just from clock, notes and CC. For levels you need audio. Hey Matt! ✌️ Well, there is always a dozen of different ways.
      The easiest imho would be this app that I showed in this video. In it you could just capture the master output as one stereo file. Then you have it! After you could take it into Ableton and do some post processing.
      Another easy way is to use Digitakt and an audio interface, I guess. Simply in Ableton in Audio Settings you can select DT in the Audio Input Device. Then create an Audio Track and set it to get audio from Ext. in. Arm the track and hit record.

    Hi boys. I need some advice)
    I want to record my jam on Minilogue Xd and digitakt into Ableton, and I faced one problem. It sounds like audio from Diigtakt is late.
    Before using a PC, my setup was very simple:
    audio from Digi into Xone 92
    audio from Minilogue into Xone 92
    Audio from Master from Xone 92 into Focusrite 2i4 2nd Gen and then to Monitors.
    Everything played very well with no delays like one piece
    Now, when I connected like this:
    Audio from Minilogue to audio inputs Focusrite
    Digitakt through USB to iMAC and then of course fo Focusrite and to Monitors
    it sounds very bad.
    Is the problem with audio interface?

    • @IhorMedia
      @IhorMedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, there is so many ways in this particular scenario to go nuts. But I think I might have an idea that will work for you.
      Digitakt
      - Enable Overbridge setting in DT
      - Launch Overbridge Engine
      - Connect DT over USB to your Mac
      - In Ableton remove any checkboxes in MIDI settings next to the Digitakt
      - Create a MIDI track and put the Digitakt VST into it
      Minilogue
      - Enable external clock and transport to come from USB
      - Connect it over USB to you Mac
      - Connect audio to your Audio Interface
      - In Ableton MIDI: Find Out: Minilogue XD and enable all 3 checkboxes, and clock type “Pattern”
- You could also measure delay that Minilogue has over USB and set some offset in “MIDI Clock Sync Delay” section (to do that you could record 4-8 bars of a little plucky sound from the Minilogue into Ableton and see and measure how much it drifts from the grid).
      - Create a MIDI track and put an External instrument there and set the MIDI to go into the right port and audio inputs from your audio interface
      Then you can use Ableton clock and transport to run all this. Hope that helps.
      PS: keep in mind that Digitakt VST will introduce some 30-40ms delay, but it will be all in sync, because Ableton will compensate it. The only problem here could be if you play Live on the DT you might experience a little lag.

      I think you should be able to record DT into the Garage Band. But I'm not sure, since I don't use the Garage.
      Now DT or OT? I'd go for DT in your case. DT is a modern hi-end sampler that offers a lot. It is really easy to start with and learn about sampling. You can even plug your guitar amp output to it, if you wish.
      OT will be too much overwhelming. It doesn't have audio over USB, nor the Overbridge, which complicates the recording for you. Also there is quite a steep learning curve to it.

    It’s interesting that the digitekt is 48k sample rate, that is usually used for video. Do you keep your ableton project at 48k and convert to 44.1k at export? I guess nobody actually makes CDs anymore so it doesn’t matter and you can keep the mp3s or whatever export format at 48k.
    Edit: also ignore the people saying to turn it up for exporting the tracks, you WANT IT lower than 0db peaks when tracking for mastering so you don’t get any clipping. It’s also good that it gives you the dry tracks without reverb, this gives you way more control for mastering/remixing. This is the whole point of effect sends.
