It’s four thirty in the morning. I awoke at three with this song in my mind. Sometimes I do that. Different songs that mean something to me wake me up, so I quietly head out to the kitchen, make a pot of coffee, put in my pods and hunt down the music. I remember seeing Billy Preston do this song on his 1973 tour, we were standing on the gravel racetrack in the dark at the County Fairgrounds watching this guy with an enormous Afro, just stunned, me and my little sister. Preston opened for some flash-in-the-pan, one hit wonder band, and we’d never heard of him. He was wonderful, and his message was so comforting in those troubled days of 1973. Something about this song has stayed with me all of my life… God must have put this song in my head this morning. I’ve been talking to Him a lot lately- the world is so crazy these days, and I’m so small in it. I feel as though I’m going to have to see the End Times after all, and I’m too old and crippled up to help fight the good fight, so I thank Him daily for my life and all the ups and downs that put me where I am on this dark Autumn morning, listening to Billy Preston with tears in my eyes, full of nostalgia for my misspent youth and concern the world’s uncertain future.
if you believe in God you should not worry about world because He is the king of this world, so you can rest in Him and everything would be good. God bless you
Well spoken Dean, and at least we will always have the music these great artists made! I miss my friend Leon more than anyone could imagine! May they all Rest In Peace!
What a wonderful period in time when people like Billy Preston, George Harrison and so many others praised God in their music. And we rocked to it and got the message.
+Dash Jeffreys Gives me chills I remember this concert, it was so cool and we knew it was the beginning of something special. The fundraising concerts for a cause. George had music friends with similar ideas and experiences of the spiritual. So good to listen to when you need a little punch in the arm It's all good! RIP Billy Preston and my beloved George Harrison...warts and all.
Put your hand in the had, Day by day, Spirit in the sky and Jesus Christ superstar were all huge hits in the early 70s. I doubt that many were offended by these songs. None of them were meant to be preachy or confrontational. They were celebrations and people embraced them!
I don't know....never thought of George being preachy. More like he really believed in certain philosophies and just talked about them through his music.
This *BEAUTIFUL* song brings me to tears. George Harrison did something so noble in calling for this concert, but few big names agreed to help, so George moved ahead with his friends, including the relatively obscure Billy Preston. Billy went out and delivered a gorgeous number soaked in sincere love of God and man. It is interesting to compare the start, where few if any know Billy and virtually no one knows this song, and the end when the audience explodes in adulation. This is a precious moment in music history.
Saw Billy and Leon in Concert 1972. Billy on a White full concert grand piano and Leon on a Black one. There was a section of the show where Billy floored us with full gospel, house lights on, 20,000 mostly white kids on their feet so turned on. To this day, one of the best concerts ever.
Why can't we be humble like the good Lord say? He promised to exalt us but love is the way How men be so greedy when there's so much left? All things are God-given and they all have been blessed That's the way God planned it that's the way God wants it to be That's the way God planned it that's the way God wants it to be Let not your heart be troubled let mourning, sobbing cease Learn to help one another and live in perfect peace If we'd just be humble like the good Lord say, yeah He promised to exalt us but love is the way That's the way God planned it that's the way God wants it to be You better believe me that's the way God planned it I hope you get this message where you won't, others will You don't understand me but I'll love you still That's the way God planned it that's the way God wants it to be.....................
First time I am hearing this song. I found out this songs name from our history book , all the people of Bangladesh think that Goerge Harrison inclucling Billy Preston,Ringo Star, and Ravi Shankar and all others did a great job by arranging The concert for Bangladesh .LOVE and RESPECT from Bangladesh.
That's the Way God Planned It was a chartbuster hit all over Europe in the summer of 1969. In Britain, Germany etc. But never scored big on the US Charts.
Saw him at Carnegie Hall about a year later after the Bangladesh concert One of the best concerts I ever saw ! Rest in Peace Billy ! The fifth Beatle forever !
+Addison Dewitt There's nothing wrong with someone being concerned about the sorry state of the English language, Addison. You revealed your ignorance with your petty comment.
This was probably my favorite performance of the concert. Billy was on fire. And Klaus Voorman's rollicking bass was a big influence on making me want to play bass. (Other bass influences were James Jamerson, Chas Chandler, Jerry Jemmott, and Paul McCartney...)
Same here... McCartney's bass line always had a melodic dimension. It bridged the gap between the rhythm and the melodic. I had to get a 'Rick' for that reason, the tone was irresistible, especially in the lower register. Mine was stolen, now I have an '82 Alembic... it's speaks for itself. Lee Skylar was also a genius, still is.
They called Billy the 5th Beatle. He also played some mean, low organ on "I Got The Blues" for the Stones' Sticky Fingers album. Rest in peace, brother. You did good.
I saw Billy Preston in one of the Summerthing concerts held on Boston Common in 1974, I believe. There were a number of different performers that day but BILLY had everyone on their feet dancing.I will never forget it - he was one hell of a live performer. I fell in love with him that day. This is one of the songs he performed and is a favorite of mine to this day.
I love this song and particularly this amazing version. Thanks to George Harrison we now have a glimpse of what a mega hyper super band sounds, with people like Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Leon Russell, Bob Dylan, Jesse Ed Davies and so forth.
THANKZ!! CUZ, 4 CONTRIBUTING & SHARING UR BLESSED.GIFT WITH.GODZ WORLD OF HUMAN-BEINGS, MAKES US APPRECIATE LIVING & BEING.LOVED!!!! SING ON MY LOVE, SING ON.....
I love this song even though I'm not religious. I do believe there's a higher plan and reason that things happen. Love and Light. I wish the video of this performance was on TH-cam because it's incredible.
Got sick in spring 1972, when I was up to it, my 1st night out that summer my friends took me out to see concert for Bangladesh movie, later next winter saw Billy Preston in Ann Arbor. Never forget either night!
Lets say that main stream artists could incorporate religion in to popular music with out the social media feedback/attack that they'd have to endure today. These days people are so easily offended that nothing good will come from it. What did happen to freedom of religious beliefs and freedom of speech? Bring back he the '70's! Amen
People asking where has the footage gone? I saw it in the theatre when it came out. TH-cam may not want on display any acts of belief in our God. But I'd bet the farm that Billy Preston was feeling it that day. Made me want to " shout" like grandma used to. I cry when I hear it now. I have the DVD but would love to be able to watch it here and share it. I guess God is not "in" right now.
I saw him with George Harrison in a Snow Storm , where George was 2 or 3 hours late in his flight from Chicago Nov. 1974. He got there around 9:30 p.m. 2 Shows ,and the 1st Show hadn't started.Billy played 4 Songs & was bringing that Sweet Soul Music. We left around 12:30. Totally spent. George is a Beatle.
Saw this in the theatre when it came out. Honestly, the concert had been pretty pedestrian up to that point, but Preston energized the rest of the band and the crowd with this. Great concert from this song forward; top 5 for me.
Nice. Ok, GREAT. I found myself locked in on the rhythm section. I was thinking who was better than Jim Gordon and Carl Radle, right? Nope. Wrong. Just looked it up and, apparently, it was Jim Keltner and Klaus Voormann. They sound perfect together. Both have a deep “thud” to their sound that meld together into perfection. Legends. One other thought - I wish Clapton had been in better shape for this concert. He could have dropped a mind-blowing solo in there. Something like he did on Bell Bottom Blues ( how underrated is THAT song?).
Another one of Dylan's concerts that i could have attended, but, i was in Iowa (in college)... Bob gave free tickets to my adoptive father Bruce. Another case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time!!!
Muy bueno concerto, I have on DVD. Bought it used in priemo condition from Amazon. Got it for 20.00 I think it was at least $50.00 for brand new. My Sweet Lord. So so good!.
It is in the original film of the concert for bangladesh. It used to play on the cable channels, I have an old Vhs tape of it. It has to be on dvd I would think.
I remember when the older generation called the counter culture "godless" and I think it was just we had a different spirituality than their old time religion.

What Hendrix was to guitar, Billy Preston was to keyboards. Legend. RIP Billy Preston, RIP George Harrison, RIP Leon Russell.

Well spoken Dean, and at least we will always have the music these great artists made! I miss my friend Leon more than anyone could imagine! May they all Rest In Peace!
I don't know if I would go so far with your Hendrix analogy, but he was great musician.
You can’t forget to remember Jesse Ed Davis as well, legendary guitarist who also collaborated in the concert, rip legend.
Preston was someone who was referred to as the 5'th beatle
When Billy did this song,we all went wild.It was probably the most exciting part of the concert.
Great memory🎼

Indeed, it felt as if we could make a difference in the world back then.
Put your hand in the had, Day by day, Spirit in the sky and Jesus Christ superstar were all huge hits in the early 70s. I doubt that many were offended by these songs. None of them were meant to be preachy or confrontational. They were celebrations and people embraced them!
Well... some WERE "preachy". A lot of Harrison's stuff was.
I don't know....never thought of George being preachy. More like he really believed in certain philosophies and just talked about them through his music.

Wouldn't call Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton unknown artists
A lot of George friends showed up you need to listen to the album bro
Simply brilliant.
This is how you bring a house down. rip Billy George and Leon
And George, and Radle, and lots

We need a Billy preston, revival , must be millions of young generation , who never heard of his wonderful music.
My favorite song of the historic Concert for Bangladesh!!!
Rodolfo Urbalejo Gallego - My favorite too
Mine too.
I love this song Billy Preston! Thank You! You have been gone 14 years and is still so missed! Your songs still ring true today. God Bless You!
Why can't we be humble like the good Lord say?

5th Beatle? That would be George Martin. (and I LOVE Preston!!)
@@chipgaasche4933not according to John Lennon who called William the 5th Beatle!
Just imagine singing about God with George Harrison and Eric Clapton on guitar
Lovely song very beautiful
This entire song changes my day immediately!!!
Let us not overlook the fabulous Claudia Lanier wailing on backup!!! 😎💓
Brilliant and exciting performer, always loved his music, damn shame he died penniless.
I ask for your healing prayers thank you Jesus 🙏
it would of been so very cool to see the clip of Billy Preston singing n strutting across the stage to his song.
+Michael Lombardi It would HAVE been, not OF been. What does that mean?
+Bobby G. oh look a petty scholar...feel better ?
+Addison Dewitt There's nothing wrong with someone being concerned about the sorry state of the English language, Addison. You revealed your ignorance with your petty comment.
They keep taking down the live clips anytime someone posts them. Preston nearly stole the show.
Stewart Lawrence "Nearly"? I'd say Billy and Leon were easily the highlight of the show... and this coming from a big George, Ringo, and Dylan fan.
This was probably my favorite performance of the concert. Billy was on fire. And Klaus Voorman's rollicking bass was a big influence on making me want to play bass. (Other bass influences were James Jamerson, Chas Chandler, Jerry Jemmott, and Paul McCartney...)
Good influences, my dude.

I wish they would post Billy Preston's show of this song.
me too..... I think it s on TH-cam
It was for a long time. A showstopper. Even George got in a little bit of a shuffle when Billy was dancing.
They always take down the videos when they get too popular

I do too . He was so moved , it gave me chills . Made me feel like I was there . ❤️
R.i.p Billy that song and dance on stage will never be forgotten, magnificent

Not exactly. Monterrey Pop Festival of ‘67, for example, entire proceeds went to charity.. No performers were paid
