Unasked for advice: Plant some pines, now, so that in in several years you can start to see a pine forest grow up on some of your cleared field. You could start with a quarter-hectare, 144 saplings spaced every 4 or 5 meters into a tree grid (perfect tarp spacing). Pine forests are GREAT for camping because the dropped needles keep the ground cleared and are soft to sleep on; the pine resin is great for firestarting and making pine pitch; the long straight timber makes for good tarp tenting, etc... Also, around the periphery, you could plant a few Christmas tree saplings. Growing pines is about the easiest tree farming on the planet. They grow fast, require very little maintenance. CHeers. P.S. Leave quite a bit of space between the house and the pines... just in case of fire.
Rick Ritchie Just don't plant them too close to any of your buildings, because they burn well, and are soft enough that the tops often blow off. Also, if you intersperse your planting with hardwood/deciduous trees, your forest will be healthier, you will have a better windbreak, and you will have a better variety of wood for different uses (long burns, for example). Ps, Xmas trees require a couple of prunings during their 7-10 year life, maybe a bug treatment. Do check on sales limitations if you plan to sell any, as you know.
I have seen in a documentary that it's best to plant various sort of tree. In fact, if I remember well, the big fire that hit Calgary a few years ago it was partially due to the fact that it was a pine forest. I wish I could remember more. I believe I saw it on "La semaine verte" on Radio Canada.

Loved the video! 👍 If you want to avoid the soot on the frying pan when cooking on a fire, rub the bottom with dish-washing liquid. When you clean it, the soot comes right off. Learned it is scoute. It works!
I love the fact that Steve starts fires like the rest of us. I can watch anyone start a fire with fire steel or a bow drill. but Steve breaks out the blow torch! awesome!
I had a double hip replacement at 47 mate. Absolutely the very best thing I ever did. The pain will be gone. I have a new lease of life now. Good luck mate, get it done...👍🏻👍🏻
Oh man. You breaking that pan made me laugh way harder than I should have. Granted, I’ve had a few step twos tonight with beautiful fiancé, but god damn, I was laughing my ass off
Steve ... i absolutely love this video!!! I lmao when you lit your campfire with your torch; pure class!!! While I pride myself on my back woods skills , and I stay practiced in them, when I want a fire, I want it NOW, and the torch is by far the best way to go. Ditto for the use of the four wheeler; I have a blown right knee, a bad back and arthritis; I still enjoy the great outdoors; I simply don’t hike. I hunt with family or friends, fish from a boat and camp from a car (or friend’s four wheeler). Please don’t feel like you are less an outdoorsman because you don’t hike. I love this channel. I just found it last night and I didn't quite know why I loved it so much. I have been friends with a lot of outcasts and punk rockers. Recently I know that a lot of my friends are facing potential homelessness and I think that this channel has dignity, exploration and a positive attitude about not living in a house. I don't think that homeless dignity is the main thrust of what Steve is doing, but I can garauntee that people in that situation could really use some positive vibes and mentality and how-to stuff. I love that Steve always lets people know when he messes up or forgot a tool, and then also says that everything will be OK. Hunker Down.
I've been homeless and I've been a renter and a homeowner but I've never been camping. Yet this channel is so interesting peaceful and informational it's great😊 key then coming Steve were so hunkered down. I like the hoodie and hat btw fresh fit.
I love all of your videos, but this one especially hit me because it reminded me of going with my Grandpa to check out the farm and do chores while I "helped". Keep up the great work!
I continue to be confused over my interest in your videos. I’ll have to think more on it, but in the meantime keep on keepin on Steve. Your indomitable spirit is infectious (oops maybe poor word choice in today’s reality).
Hey man, keep up the good work! I'm loving your channel, I've only been subscribed for a few months but me and my dad do winter motorcycle camping in the UK and through the colder months (worst I've ever seen was - 10c) we hot tent. To see you sleep out with just your bag in temps that I've only ever seen on paper is truly inspiring.
I admire your creativity when it comes to all things camping. I appreciate that your videos show us that there is nothing to fear if you wanna go out for an adventure. Hunker down and keep the spirit of adventure alive 😀
I could watch Steve paint a wall, I can’t yet put my finger on why, he’s just an easy, happy, watch. Definitely not educational in terms of survival camping :P , but that’s “camping with Steve”

Thank you so much for sharing the hip story. That is very helpful. I had one that deflated and felt that pain in the hip area but did not pinch it enough to do that. Never discredit your information. It could always help someone, even years later after you made the video. Love the curtain rod as a frame for sure. Nice property with lots of potentials. Have fun Steve.
I found your hip story very interesting and informative. Something to really think about. At least you don't let it hold you back from the thing you seem to really enjoy alot. Keep it up man. I really enjoy your videos.
I'm essential, I work in a grocery store. So I was working today in a crabby mood and then I realized "oh it's Thursday! I get to watch camping with Steve tonight!"
It makes me very happy to see you got your property, I lived in the woods 30 some years ,due to reasons beyond my control I had to leave the woods behind . One of my greatest regrets and disappointment! Love your adventures!!
I love ya man. Your like an addiction,, the more I watch,,, the more I want. LOL. Never stop doing what your doing. Don't you think it's time for a camp journey with crazy neighbor. He's been such a good friend seems he should be with us too , more often. Can't wait to see both of you again
Just saw a news headline that read "A man was found camping out on Disney World's abandoned Discovery Island park during coronavirus shutdown. He told police he didn't know he was trespassing" and of course thought of your, Steve!
You mentioned not wanting to blacken the outside of your pan cooking over the fire. A simple fix is to spread a light even layer of liquid dish soap on the exterior with a paper towel before placing on the fire. Any soot will come right off. Hope this helps. Feel free to google it.....it's a thing. Happy adventures!
I miss camping. It is really fun for 1 night when you can go home and clean up. Steve reminds me of all of the great overnight camping I did years ago.
I have such a major love of outdoors and adventure. I'd give anything to play like you do in the Alberta woods. My relatives are scattered throughout Alberta. My grandparents were original St. Paul homesteaders. Happy camping Steve. PS. Take good care of yourself with that hip. They have improved hip replacement surgery alot.
That meal may be simple but looks SO good, Steve. I hope you're doing well buddy. I just rewatched probably all your content in the past few weeks after being laid off from work.
Steve, if I were offer you a tip, it would be to add the chicken to the frying pan once it gets smoking hot. That will sear the chicken, lock in the juices, and brown nicely, which gives extra flavor. Good camping bruh.
I'm not much of a cook but I thought "uh no" when he dropped the chicken straight in. Also I wonder what kind of olive oil he uses, poor at high temperatures unless it's very light. I'd suggest peanut oil.
I was taught to cook over coals not the flame. We would dig a shallow hole about 8 inches deep or so. Stayed burning most of the night. Enjoyed the video.
I love your videos Steve, nice piece of property you have, you’ll have lots of fun out there! Just be careful in the poplar where you set up camp, they often die at the top first and a good wind can bring them down on you in the night. Be safe and have fun!
Been haunting your channel all day! Yay, you made it! You're too young for hip problems, hope you get it fixed...."surgery with Steve" would be an interesting show😶 Hope we see Crazy sometime, he's such a good soul! Cheers Steve!
Really enjoy your videos. As an avid backpacker and camper I enjoy watching people having fun with their outdoors experiences. Would love to see you start using a firesteel.
Hey Steve, just ran across this (old!) video, and just to commiserate, I too, had a bad hip, and needed a THR (Total Hip Replacement). It sucks, but I still get out on my three+ acres I live on, cut wood, and do "woods" things, and have 10 acres in mid-Michigan I still try to camp on. Hiking for me is "day hikes" now. I see you still going and am a subscriber, so keep at it! To stop is to die. Don't do that!
OMG! Mate, i've got a physical problem in my back caused, i'm certain, by an air mattress that slowly deflated in the night. Created a pinched nerve in my spine. This is the first time i've heard any one else blame the same cause.
Hey Steve if you rub dish soap on the bottom and sides of the pan, before you put it on the fire, you'll be able to wash the soot right off! It's an old Girl Scout trick!
Somehow, Steve reminds me of Tim Allen’s character on Home Improvement. Gets in trouble with his inventions. Steve is funny without even trying to be funny. 🤣🤣🤣
Nice video Steve.Without heater inside the hammock it might be pretty hard night.Hope sunny days will come soon and see your new videos with green forests ,or near the river.
Hey Steve! Jon Luther here in Virginia again. Supper tonight was what we call sombrero dip. My beautiful wife suggested I give you the recipe for it. Goes great with camping. These are U.S. measurements. 1lb. Ground beef. 1/2 onion chopped fine. Can of dark red kidney beans.2tblspn Hot sauce. 1tblspn Chili powder. 10 oz. of ketchup. Salt & pepper. In sauce pan, mash beans, add juice from can, hot sauce, chili powder and ketchup. Mix and put in container that won't leak. Then at the campsite, fry beef with onion until brown of course. Salt and pepper to liking. Combine all ingredients back into sauce pan, mix and simmer. Add grated cheese to melt if you like, or hell, anything else 😂. Eat with tortilla chips. Wife and I have camped in most of the lower 48. Love road trips using the old route systems and once had to camp in a post office parking lot in Jenner CA. Ran low on fuel at 2:00am. Slept in the Jeep Cherokee until gas station across road opened. Anyway, love the videos! Keepem coming. Would love to meet you some day! I'll bring some Jack Daniels Tennessee sour mash to share step two with you. Hope you like the recipe! Jon out!

Loved the video! 👍 If you want to avoid the soot on the frying pan when cooking on a fire, rub the bottom with dish-washing liquid. When you clean it, the soot comes right off. Learned it is scoute. It works!
I love the fact that Steve starts fires like the rest of us. I can watch anyone start a fire with fire steel or a bow drill. but Steve breaks out the blow torch! awesome!
Life is too short to mess around
I start my campfires with only two things:
1. Wing
2. Prayer
I had a double hip replacement at 47 mate. Absolutely the very best thing I ever did. The pain will be gone. I have a new lease of life now. Good luck mate, get it done...👍🏻👍🏻
Oh man. You breaking that pan made me laugh way harder than I should have. Granted, I’ve had a few step twos tonight with beautiful fiancé, but god damn, I was laughing my ass off
"I've slept in worse"
"Its awesome"
"This is the worst thing I ever built"
Right😂
Lmao
Sounds like me when I write.
Same though.
"good enough is my favorite phrase"
grow vegetables and "other stuff" lolol
Ooooooooooooo yeaaaaaaaaaaaa!
i know how to do it cheaply and produce top shelf product with all items purchased on amazon 26%+
Other stuff like beef? Fish and shrimp plants?
You know crazy neighbor likes the "Other Stuff" Lol
Yeah gardening with Steve!
I bet his house just has a tent in each room and no furniture. I want a tour...
I think his wife is more than ok with him "camping"
I think he does have furniture. It's piled up into blanket forts. He uses the sofa cushions as a floor.
@@ChiefKarma forts would be next level.
Look backward at his videos and he did give us a tour of the large house.
Steve ... i absolutely love this video!!! Each of us enjoys nature in his or her own way; and each way has an esoteric beauty of its own!!! I love your video and your channel!!! Take care, be safe, all my best and God bless you and yours from me and mine!!! Chuck Knight from Buffalo, Texas, USA. 🤠🐩👍
It's 2 a.m. and I am in my very first tent in my backyard testing it out. nothing better to keep me company than a camping with Steve video. -Pierce
Hi steve, just love how " chaotic yet organized " your videos are and if things dont really go to plan it's a " Meh " " step #2 " cracks me up everytime... coz when the poop hits the fan you'll always have a beer. Much love from. CORNWALL, UK
👍❤
Camping....sleeping in your own yard...same thing when you’re camping with Steve!
We are all camping in out yards just now. Some yards are bigger than others.
Currently in my camping hammock in my backyard lmao
“I’m gonna put in a little bit of salsa” *proceeds to dump entire jar 😂
That was funny. 🤣🤣🤣
Internet approved!
Your never boring. Love when you chat with us. And your handy tips.❤
30:46 This is what I love about Steve's Channel. Hes the only guy I've seen start a butane stove with a propane tank!
What a trend setter!
Love the quad! You should get one of those motorcycle tents and camp on the quad. Would love to go camping with you Steve!
Steve, you're the master of low-brow camp cuisine and I'm humbled by your expertise.
I could watch Steve paint a wall, I can’t yet put my finger on why, he’s just an easy, happy, watch. Definitely not educational in terms of survival camping :P , but that’s “camping with Steve”
U like him cuz he’s so dum dum but smart? Also a bit sad ... all that mixed in makes for a good time....and he’s making money doing this... so yeah LOL
He's the camping Canadian version of Bob Ross.
There is something so enticing about watching someone who is really doing exactly what they want. The joy and simplicity is key.
• Welcome to Stealth Painting with Steve ! Today we're going to brighten up this dull beige Living room to a more Party / Playful space with 1 wall each of Violet , Pink , pastel Yellow , & LIME.
• As you can see i've already gathered the furniture to the center of the room under the cheapest drop cloths the Dollar Mart had on Clearance ( not too many tears in them ) .
• Today i WILL be doing Step2 AFTER step3 tho , as i REALLY need to start painting quickly since the Owners may be back from shopping in only a few hours.
@@mochie812, you sound extremely jealous.
Dell Griffith, Director of Sales, Shower Curtain Ring Division.
Great movie! John Candy will always be a true Canadian treasure :)
Great reference rip John Candy ✌
Those aren't pillows
Dell Griffith shower curtain feller!
Mark Touchette exactly! Lololololol
Definitely need to get merch that includes “step 2”. You’re appreciated Steve.
So when your boss asks you what step 2 is whatcha gon say? Drink rum and ginger ale lol
I wasn't looking at the screen and I hear, "Oh no my flipper! It's on fire!" :D Thank you for that laugh Steve!
I loved the burning flipper,🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Outstanding video, Steve. You are as real as they come. Peace.
'Oh no, my flipper, it's on fire!' Love the videos (particularly the fire starting... always entertaining....)
"OH NO! My flipper is on fire!" Dude I was laughing my ass off at that. I'm lmao just typing this up. Bahaha
That’s a beautiful piece of property Bro, definitely something to be proud of.
Think of it as a fixer upper ... and plenty of step twos.
It's a mess on a swamp.
I love Steve's chilled out, go with the flow attitude. Not pretentious like some of those bushcraft guys. Steve just tryna have a good time.
#1 of getting camp fires going.. high light of the video. keep it up Steve!
I found your hip story very interesting and informative. Something to really think about. At least you don't let it hold you back from the thing you seem to really enjoy alot. Keep it up man. I really enjoy your videos.
Hey. Get the neoprene wrap belt. Will help your back. But..I think u use one already.
I'm essential, I work in a grocery store. So I was working today in a crabby mood and then I realized "oh it's Thursday! I get to watch camping with Steve tonight!"
23:14 lol! So good. Also, “oh no, my flippers on fire!”
I died at literally both of these moments!
Why?
I love the time lapse’s you film while you sleep. It’s always interesting seeing what happens!
It makes me very happy to see you got your property, I lived in the woods 30 some years ,due to reasons beyond my control I had to leave the woods behind . One of my greatest regrets and disappointment! Love your adventures!!
This is one of my favorites Steve! You are so funny even when you're not feeling so good. Thanks!
I love ya man. Your like an addiction,, the more I watch,,, the more I want.
LOL. Never stop doing what your doing.
Don't you think it's time for a camp journey with crazy neighbor. He's been such a good friend seems he should be with us too , more often. Can't wait to see both of you again
22:30 Welp... the pan just flew apart, so I might as well use it to cook.” DYING!!!!! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
rotflmdfao 😆😆😆😆
Just saw a news headline that read "A man was found camping out on Disney World's abandoned Discovery Island park during coronavirus shutdown. He told police he didn't know he was trespassing" and of course thought of your, Steve!
I remember that are you sure that wasn't Steve 😂
Jim Leonard it was I believe
You mentioned not wanting to blacken the outside of your pan cooking over the fire. A simple fix is to spread a light even layer of liquid dish soap on the exterior with a paper towel before placing on the fire. Any soot will come right off. Hope this helps. Feel free to google it.....it's a thing. Happy adventures!
I miss camping. It is really fun for 1 night when you can go home and clean up. Steve reminds me of all of the great overnight camping I did years ago.
“ I’m not going to drink it all, it’s just cheaper when I buy it in this size”
.......and its size is much more convenient to carry....🤪🤣😎👍👍
"I'm going to put in a little bit of salsa!"
*Empties entire can*
It boggles my mind when I see the things you camp in. I’m still waiting for you to stealth camp in a hotel lobby.
Lol,,, great story
@Predbeau101 Wow! Did you thank the mop. Did you then become homeless?
I have such a major love of outdoors and adventure. I'd give anything to play like you do in the Alberta woods. My relatives are scattered throughout Alberta. My grandparents were original St. Paul homesteaders. Happy camping Steve. PS. Take good care of yourself with that hip. They have improved hip replacement surgery alot.
That meal may be simple but looks SO good, Steve. I hope you're doing well buddy. I just rewatched probably all your content in the past few weeks after being laid off from work.
Just got a camping cook stove and went out and had some braughts will work my way up to over night. Love your videos man!
Steve, if I were offer you a tip, it would be to add the chicken to the frying pan once it gets smoking hot. That will sear the chicken, lock in the juices, and brown nicely, which gives extra flavor. Good camping bruh.
Maybe take the plastic flipper out of the pan as well.
And, it won't splatter up your kitchen because you're not in your kitchen.
I'm not much of a cook but I thought "uh no" when he dropped the chicken straight in. Also I wonder what kind of olive oil he uses, poor at high temperatures unless it's very light. I'd suggest peanut oil.
Geez Steve, ten minutes in and I'm laughing my ass off! Had to take a break 🤪
Your positive enthusiasm adds so much to these videos. I really have loved spending time watching and learning, thank you, Steve! :)
Steve is so bad ass he chases his ginger ale down with rum.
LOL
That's fantastic. Great guy.
That’s funny!! Good one
Been haunting your channel all day! Yay, you made it!
You're too young for hip problems, hope you get it fixed...."surgery with Steve" would be an interesting show😶
Hope we see Crazy sometime, he's such a good soul!
After this, I'll never lay down on an air mattress unless it's got at least a closed cell foam camping mat under it.
That is my whole problem. If only I had known before I slept on that dirt road.
Happened to me as well. Terrible pain
Jon out!
Step 1: Throw a tarp over a curtain rod.
Step 2: Get drunk.
Step 3: Go quad bike riding.
Your camping with Steve.
Don't forget to bring your blowtorch to get a fire going
😂😂😂
don't threaten me with a good time!

Tree: *falls*
"Now you're camping with Steve's ghost"
A lot of people musing on this thread (as often happens) as to why we love Steve. My thoughts: his friendly, laid-back , **good-natured** manner and way of talking; he's well- spoken; he's smart and funny at the same time. It's a truly winning combination! 👍 ⛺
It looks like it would be a blast to go camping with Steve.its prob a little bit of a rush just with the risk of getting caught.nature is God's canvas for all of us to 😉enjoy.nothing beats sitting by a fire watching the evening 🌆sunset!!!hunker down brother, and stay safe!!!
