    Thank you Charlie's Service Center for going above and beyond for our friend Liz! I'm retired now, but used to own a vehicle/RV service company. I said, the standard for trust is, "If you can trust them to take care of your mom, daughter, or sister when she's stranded a thousand miles from nowhere..." You all seem to meet that high standard!

    I’ve been a licensed mechanic for over 30 years and that looks like a very reasonable bill for what they had to do. The fact that they figured out and installed a way to clean your air is just an added bonus. Good luck in your journeys

      @Stock Index Futures Trading Algorithm They cut the hole, blocked off the inside access to the original filter, and fabricated a door using an old fridge door. Added a hinge, filter and installed it. I'd say that's a pretty good deal!

    • @carlbeaver7112
      @carlbeaver7112 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Licensed? Where does that happen? Seriously, just interested. I've got a dumpster full of certs, etc. (FLM, GM, SAAB, Subaru, Isuzu, NIASE, ASE, EVT) from my 50 years but didn't know anyone/anywhere was actually licensing anyone.
      Time charged looks reasonable to me as well. I'd hate to pay the bill seeing as when I started labor was $12/hr. but dem's da apples I suppose.

    Good to hear a happy ending. I know I’ve mentioned before about our breakdown in Myrtle Beach a few years ago. We were camped out in front of Larry’s Auto Clinic for two weeks. What a great place to be stranded! We had full hookups and a beach not too far away. Larry and his wife even took us out to dinner one night. I insisted to pay for the dinner then he deducted that amount from our repair bill. I was so heartbroken when I found out that he recently passed away. Every once in awhile a person will enter your life and you never forget them. Larry was one of those people. This world would be such a better place if everyone was like Larry. RIP Larry.

    • @LizAmazing

      Awww, it sure hurts when we lose a good one. So glad you got to know Larry and it was such a good experience. I, too, had full hookups in the repair lot. Not much to complain about at all! By the way, Charlie is no longer with us either and people still talk about him although it's been over ten years. His son Justin runs the place now.

    Wow! They were super easy to work with and it sounds like they did a terrific job. I love the way that they went the extra mile to reroute your filter so that it is more efficient. The price doesn’t seem unreasonable either. I just paid $1800 to have my home’s air conditioning coils cleaned and a drip pan installed under the unit. This didn’t require anyone to get underneath a big RV to uninstall it either and I didn’t have to purchase any hardware for my unit. So it sounds like they have you a fair price given the parts and labor. You should be good to go for a long time. 😊

    Awesome video Liz! They really took great care of you. My wife and I were really impressed with the treatment and care that you received from Charlie’s and it has given us a new perspective on buying a used/vintage motorhome. We both agreed that they could have changed you twice as much for what you received and you still would have gotten a “deal”. Not encouraging that, but you get my meaning. Thank you for the video and safe travels to you. 👍🏼😎

      You are so right, Rick. They were very honest and also took the time to educate me on a couple areas such as tire air pressure (lower to help it handle better) and getting dump valves for the air tank. Happy RV shopping and looking forward to seeing you out here!

  • @Robnord1
    @Robnord1 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Another great video ! Thanks for showing their invoice too. I've had my own mobile RV repair going for about 25 years, and don't put near the markup they do on parts (about cost x 4 on the motor and the cap). That's why no part numbers. Often I've thought my cost x 1.5 - 2 was excessive. Ha!

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Rob. Yeah, that was a pretty high markup. But all in all a good experience. I thought the 7 hours labor was on the low side, and at $175 not too bad. Plus I got 8 nights with full hookups at no cost. Mainly, I was grateful they worked me in versus making me wait months. Thanks for your comment and see you in the next one!

    Imagine being stuck in a Truck Repair parking lot. Before the internet. Over Thanksgiving. Happened to me in 1989 when my Allison transmission died in Uvalde, Texas. Got towed to a Stewart-&-Stevenson heavy equipment repair in San Antonio. Nowhere NEAR a grocery store - but, a Petro station within cycling distance. No internet. Only AM/FM radio and over-the-air television. I'd cycle to the Petro station to play pinball and eat, and then back to the Wanderlodge to work ( I was a Macintosh programmer at the time ). Great memory, actually.

I’m nearly 80 and we have found a lovely spot where we leave our caravan, I’m in the UK, and we go to the van for 2 or 3 weeks per. Month, they store it in a barn when not in see and then get it out and level it and set. It up for us, so we have beautiful views over the sea and can still enjoy it in our old age. Liz, the same thing happened to me last Memorial Day weekend during a heatwave. I was near Salt Lake City and the AC suddenly went out. I could only use mobile techs as all the RV repairs shops were booked weeks out, as you said. Three weeks and three ineffective mobile repairs jobs later I finally had the whole AC replaced at Dakota RV in Rapid City, S.D. I highly recommend them! I wish I had known about Charley’s in Ogden-it would have been closer than South Dakota! 😊I didn’t know you could get a portable AC so I got one of those “water cooler” devices that maybe cooled the RV down to 90 degrees or so! 😊 Thanks for sharing-you do such a good job with these videos!!!-you have a real gift of communication! Also, I have yet to see a mini-split that looks good on the outside of an RV. This is likely the second time the AC has been repaired in 18 years so I figure I'm good for a while. Several people have commented how this is much cheaper than a home AC repair. Thanks for watching, John!

      I would never trade my basement air unit for a roof mounted unit. I love how they work in heat pump mode and together with the propane furnace when the Temps are colder.

    Liz, hello from a fellow Salt Lake or who is actually up in Eastern Idaho at the moment you pick the perfect time to break down in Utah you are a minute away from beautiful canyon scenery if you drive up any one of the canyons, including Ogden Canyon, I would definitely make a trip to Park city on Saturday for a park silly which is a weekly carnival like atmosphere. There are so many things to do in Utah, including checking out Homestead Hot Springs..!

    Whew! Just in time for summer!
    We have been having refrigerator issues while camped for the week waiting for our driveway to be paved. That problem will be fixed in a few weeks.
    Considering there was an issue that delayed our concrete pour, which pushed us into Memorial weekend, things worked out at the last minute! We were wanting to keep close to home, so we were grabbing whatever site we could that was available - which forced us to depend on cancellations and we moved from 1 to the next. We managed to get a site for Friday night but nothing fir the weekend, which we needed 2 more nights before we could safely park on the new driveway slab. In desperation, i made 2 one-night reservations to carry us to Monday. We are in a local camping group and soneone posted that they were having to cancel a site for those last 2 nights. I was second in line for it and luckily the first person declined. Amazingly, it was for the same site we had reswrved fir Friday night! My husband was thrilled that he only had to move one more time. We cancelled the extra spots at the other rv parks. And now we are back home with the new driveway!

    The only catch is that the blower motor can be found online for between $250.00 and $500.00. Shops get you on parts full retail every time. It's a sad reality you can't avoid.

    • @unique3phase
      @unique3phase ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have worked in electronics for many years and you are right. 900 for a blower motor is, in my opinion, a rip off. I did a quick look and found similar motors for 130 to 150 which is the price I would expect. I own an 36 foot DP (1999) and would never bring it to a shop. I do all my own repairs. Recently all new air bags, brake chambers, brakes axle seals new inverter lithium bats solar and much more to even list. I could not afford to own it if I couldn't do the work.

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. It was probably a 4X markup. On the other hand, they worked me in, instead of making me wait months. And shop labor was $175 when I regularly see $225. Oh, and I stayed for free in their lot with full hookups. All in all, a good experience. Thanks for watching.

  • @alanhester9984

    My sister and her husband use to own a 03 40' Alpha Gold. Yes like all RVs it had it quirks but over all floor plan and live ability was a great rig. Loved the high ceilings the most. I was the one who always got called to fix things and yes the Alpha forum was the most valued feature for help, also on up grades and modifications. The down side was the basement air. Even though it ran well all the vents were down at the floor level and was hard to get cool air up to the level you needed it. They added a roof air up front which really worked well to cool the front area. I loved driving that rig as theirs had the 400 hp Cummings in it and could really roll off the miles. Glad you got yours fixed and that it works well. The one place to really inspect every year is where the front and rear caps meet the rubber roof, they have a tendency to work and pull the calking at the seam leading to a leak along the ceiling near the wall.

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh good tip, thank you Alan. I just had the roof seams re-dicored within the last month. It all looks good up there now! Yes, those tall ceilings are amazing! And not everyone loves the basement air. I will sure try to keep mine going as long as I can. Thanks for watching.

    Liz, you have a very nice motorhome. My wife and I just started full-time RVing (prior we did 5 month tours). We still have a Class A gas where I can do most of the work myself incl. AC work and are doing regularly pretty extensive preventive work on all the systems. Thus far, we haven't had a brake down since owning the 2003 HR Admiral starting in 2017.

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Marty! Yes, diesel is a whole other animal. You can pull more and they last longer. I like that I can get fuel at truck stops, too. And I use Open Roads to save $ on diesel. BUT they are more expensive to work on that's for sure! Maybe hold onto that classic Admiral! Thanks for watching.

    • @martyh4777
      @martyh4777 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LizAmazing Yes, I agree with the certain advantages DP have, but the higher diesel fuel prices, no better fuel economy (I am getting between 8.5 to 9.5 mpg on my Class A gas), much higher part cost, and more complex systems - frankly - keep me away from DP.

    Another great video - yes, RV repairs are part of the deal especially when you have an older motorhome. I spent a few months in Redmond, OR and had to take my old 1999 Monaco Diplomat to Coburg, OR, for repair of an oil leak at Cummins. Since I was in no hurry, I just left it there and they fixed it for $8000 - it was a real bear. Glad to have that behind me. It was spewing oil and dirt on to my radiator and therefore causing the radiator to get caked with that stuff causing it to overheat. Not good. The Cummins shop in Coburg was great to work with - my situation was complicated and time consuming but got it done and then back to southern Nevada. Hey, no sales tax in Oregon, thank you!! They also have several spots with electric hookups for quicker fixes for people who live or travel in their motorhomes and don't have the options I had. Thank you, Liz, for your story!!

    • @LizAmazing
      @LizAmazing  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mary! Those oldies are goodies though for sure. I had my blowby moved to behind the radiator to keep it clean. It didn't cost much either. But of course an oil leak is a whole other story! Glad you got through that. Thanks for sharing your story and see you in the next video.

    I am thinking about rv’ing however the costs are out of control.
    That was a $2500 repair to fix/replace a $100 part. I am confident I could get a new motor for that price with a little search with serial number, a brief search on eBay using just the Coleman blower motor has me at $150. I am a retired engineer and have worked on machinery of all sorts my entire life and am confident I could have diagnosed and repaired this problem easy enough.
    Either way that is not the point. The other costs, travel at 8 miles to the gallon, depreciation, routine maintenance, camp ground fee’s, repairs, etc etc. and in the end I would still be staying at RV parks from time to time, wife says no to that. Also the whole proposition of moving is a lot of work, hook up’s, towing etc. I really wonder if it it is all worth it over just staying at air bnb’s and driving from place to place in a more comfortable car.
    I am still undecided. Having an old RV you are fortunate in a way, the newer RV’s are more complex, especially those with DEF and touch screen controls. Not to mention the absolute junk RV’s made during the pandemic. At least you make money from your misfortune by posting on TH-cam!?!?

    My fifth wheel nearly lost its rear axle in Massachusetts. I took it into a service center and was told that they can repair it, but it may take over a month to get all the parts, process the insurance, and then schedule a welder and remount the axle. So, I packed up all my frozen foods in the fresh foods, I could save, clothing, and my desktop computer into my F450 and made my way up from Massachusetts to Quebec Canada, where I am staying at this very moment in a ski chalet for about $30 a day. My initial reservation is for 35 days and that is coming up to a close here very shortly. The nice thing was at the ski chalet. I had a low price for a one bedroom, full kitchen apartment and that it was in an area that is very beautiful with lots of biking trails. In the meantime, I’m still waiting to hear that the repair will be finished shortly.

    Plus since your stuck in Repair shop parking lot during long weekend, at least campsites will be cheaper and available after long weekend.

    I've been a long distance truck driver for 32 years. I started my career on Memorial day weekend in 1991. I take your place anytime camping at a repair shop. Over the nearly 4 million miles, I've spent some time at repair shops. The truck doesn't have a toilet or shower. Most companies will pay for a hotel. But I haven't been in one in years that had a bed that was firm enough. For 1 night, I'd stay in the truck if possible. Nothing beats sleeping in your own bed.

      That's so true, Edward. Before I hit the road, hotels were a treat. Now living in my RV I dread any hotel time and avoid them if at all possible. Thanks for all you do to keep our economy moving! And for watching!
