A Quick Patch Repair on a Monaco Signature Roof

  • I had been asked to look at a few items on a viewer's 2004 Monaco Signature including the roof. I did notice that there were a number of cracks in the fiberglass bodywork were the caps met the roof. While this is a beautiful motorhome, it has a number of paint issues so the owner decided rather than repair and paint nearly the whole front and rear caps, we would just stabilize the crack to prevent water intrusion for now. I used Clear Pro-Flex to minimize the ugliness of the repair, but there were many different ways to do this too.

    I found James on TH-cam and since then, James has done maintenance and repairs on my Coach. I highly recommend his Service if you are in the Phoenix/Mesa area. Not only did he service this roof, but he put a new water pump, service of my Aqua Hot System and provided me with much knowledge on how things work. You would be hard pressed to find a person as personable, honest and experienced as James.

    In my ignorance, I thought a one piece roof would be permanent. This shows that the unavoidable flexing between the caps and roof will eventually crack where they join anyway.

  • @live4545

    I mean I guess , who is looking at the paint on the top of the roof anyway ? I would have got the DA out and buzzed it down and put some 1708 or woven roven to fix it . And rattle can to blend . I have a hard time walking away from a repair like that . But I guess it depends on budget too .

    • @AZExpert
      @AZExpert  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      certainly that would be best, but that would be serious money and making a beautiful paint repair would look worse unless you do the entire rear cap. Thanks!

  • @john2364

    If you were going to do a fiberglass repair, would you use epoxy or polyester resin? I know polyester eats foam but also flexes better than epoxy.

    • @AZExpert
      @AZExpert  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would grind the area out, lay down new fibermat over the seam and use epoxy resin for the repair and a good polyester filler to hide it all.

    • @AZExpert

    • @AZExpert
      @AZExpert  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      they have different applications. A self leveling dicor would have leaked over the radius like melting wax and looked bad. Black non sagging would work, but look weird too, black urethane or silicone would work but tend to tool poorly and leave voids that could let water in. Thanks!

    Great video and of course you have so many amazing videos on roofing and repair. So my question is I am buying and 18 foot cargo trailer with a one piece aluminum roof and I want to seal it or paint it before I put the roof vents on and the rails for the solar panels. With all your experience with all the different materials what would you say would be the best to extend the life of the roof and help keep the temperature down. And if you could refer me to one of your videos that would be great thank you and have a blessed day

    • @AZExpert
      @AZExpert  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cargo trailers have no insulation and the metal roofs transfer heat easily as the frames are steel. The roofs last almost forever as they are metal. You could roll on coating but you'll want insulation in the ceiling too.

    Hello, I am a big fan of your channel but unfortunately I am not from the States, I won't have the chance to get your service for my Mandalay 2009 43A. I was wondering if you could help me to understand the issue that I have with my roof. I have a finer roof and there are a few areas where the finer layer is not attached or stuck to the structure as I can tell by walking on it. I don't have any sign of leakage inside the motor home and the roof structure seems solid in those areas. Is is normal for a 12 year-old motor home or is there an issue that needs to be addressed? Thank you for sharing your experience and insights with us.

    • @AZExpert
      @AZExpert  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Often, gel-coat fiberglass roofs are free floating and flex quite a bit, it can be noticeable on Monaco coaches too. I can't remember the last Mandalay I was on so it would be difficult to verify off my memory.
