The MOST Common Problem I See On Monaco RV Roofs

  • I had a viewer reach out to me and ask me to inspect thier 2004 Beaver Santiam roof. It was at Cassone's RV in Mesa, AZ for an unrelated item. Truth be told I haven't seen a Santiam in 18 years. Monaco had aquired Beaver and Safari motor coach a year before and had already turned Beaver's into clones of their Monaco and Holiday Rambler coaches. While this roof is metal which is rare and very durable, they also tend to come loose at the radius molding. So this is a very common problem and should be looked for when inspecting a Monaco brand product.
    Thanks for watching!

We started looking for a used coach last year and your experience on coaches has been valuable.
In all of our experiences of inspecting coaches, I carry a protimeter with everyone we see. I’m own a remodeling residential company is why I own one.
Just about everyone we’ve seen has water intrusion on the roof. But what I found is how many have water in the walls, mainly around the slide outs.
    Why don’t you use one?
And thank you for sharing your knowledge it has helped me over and over and as of now we are still looking for that diamond.

It's nice to see what owners are in for on these older coaches. There's so much planned obsolescence and poor designs in RVs including aftermarket items. Cheap plastic some with with holes too close to edges. Too bad Monaco opted for two rolls of aluminum and a seal down the middle for the roof but I guess it's an aluminum roll unit cost saver with about 2x more rolls of aluminum needed. And loud and clear - make sure your RV tech does the repair correctly the first time or you will be in it for a redo.

Thanks for the video, I have a 2002 Safari Trek with the same style 2 part metal roof, I also need to go up there and do its spring inspection sometime soon, so now you have given me a few things to check more closely. I also now have less concern about where the radius on mine is dented in similar to the one you showed though mine is not as bad.

Nice! This was fun to watch. In my limited experiences with coaches, I learned the ropes atop a Monaco Executive, and then a Prevost. The difference is surprising. Monaco built, what I believe, the Mercedes of coaches. Prevost? The Rolls-Royce.
Mind you, I come from a few decades of specialty in the automotive realm, I have worked on both cars.
The top cap and roof on the Monaco is typical. Nice stuff. Looks like a compromise was made on the top of the ladder.
It is absolutely critical, with roof mounted AC units, to address water incursion. Same with the skylights! Been there on addressing the potential problems.
Going from a Monaco, to a Prevost? What a difference. I must restate this: the Monaco quality is brilliant in its own right. The chassis are completely different, a Prevost is, first and foremost, different, it is a true commercial bus. It was a real experience to learn about the air packs beneath the Prevost, and an almost completely bare roof!

Ladder reinstalled by a consistently inconsistent handyman? I have learned if it has not failed yet it is eternabond, once it fails it obviously is not eternabond. Another educational video. I like this style metal roof looks good. Stay safe and healthy James you have taught me to get an inspection before buying something like this. There are so many things that can fail but not be easy to see. Casones has some more work to do.

So, after Monaco bought beaver safari, they stopped using the beaver molded fiberglass roof and went to the holday rambler safari aluminum roofs? Are all Monaco from 2002 through their demise in 2008 metal? Also, what years had the clear coat problem from the environmentalists making them change the formula?

We had a 1998 Diplomat with a one-piece aluminum roof. Obviously this was cost-saving going to two piece . No problems with the one piece. Eventually the windows and the slide leaked. Why would you buy a Beaver after Monaco acquired them? Not sure.

Would it be possible to replace a fiberglass roof with metal? Curious why Winnebago owners wouldn't opt to do that.

    • @AlohaPrepper
      @AlohaPrepper 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@AZExpert Thanks for the quick reply. I wonder if you would make a video on roof weight load capacity. I'm about ready to put enough solar on my '01 Endeavor to run a mini-split because everyone else is doing it (only somewhat joking). I would think that aluminum and fiberglass would be comparable (but I don't know why I think that). But I also am concerned after watching your videos that many people are not screwing down solar panels and using butyl tape instead. I saw you do an install and you bolted it down, so I wondered how intelligent the butyl tape idea (that I was going to do) really is? Are there conditions where one is a better idea than the other?

It is 2024, now, why aren't RV manufacturers coming up with a better roof design like a one piece metal or fiberglass roof.
And the next step would be, no luann and if you needed plymood it would have to be preasuretreated.
But I guess it only has to last 1 year and then, who cares, except of course the owner.

  • @jamesderr1344

So, as one contractor to another one question would be, since most homeowners want a price up front, and then you have talking heads saying never give a contractor money up front, would you ever bid this or is it all time and materials, like it should be.
My thinking is too many things could go wrong after you start a job like this so you would have to bid it extremely high, and 50% down at least up front so you don't get stiffed.
But I am sure you are not desperate for work so it would all be time and materials or they can find someone else.
And someone as good and well known as yourself, no one would want to stiff you because who else would do the job.
