- In this video I waffle on about research. This can be applied to any subject / genre, not just Aircraft or Lancasters. I then get on and prime and paint the interior, with some detailing thrown in.

Dear Nigel
Three cheers for research. For me, researching a subject prior to construction is a major part of the fun.
Cheers
Phil
Hello Nige, lovely to have you on another Lancaster. Hope you're on form
Nigel, Loved the explanation about sources and their provenance, as well as the section showing your techniques of detail hand-brushing. I too think you have an excellent approach to educating the intermediate level modeller. I find your explanations are at just the right level of detail and assume the appropriate level of prior knowledge / experience on the part of the viewer. Keep up the great work.
Coming along nicely, Nige.
I am amazed, in one way, that there isn't any documentation on exact colours, what was taken out and what was left and finally, where the lights were and how they were facing.....but then.....there was a war on and they weren't thinking of modelers when they fitted out the planes.... Thanks for pointing out that information though.....I find that stuff fascinating. Research until you can find three or four credible sources saying the same thing...well done Nigel, looking forward to the next episode
Great build paint job and tutorial 🙏🍺💞👍💪🐕
Hi Nigel, Looking good👍🏻 I think these videos aim to adult beginners, as for kids, if you remember, the fun was to quickly paint with a brush and build it fast to look cool, I think that the "detail disease" comes later. A lot of kids don't really play anymore, parents give them a tablet with games to sedate them...👋🏻
I have been patiently waiting for this Lancaster build of yours Nigel. Thanks for all you do for us modelers.👍👍👏👏
We do get lots of great tips Nigel ...
I have the 80th Anniversary Set ( +F35 ) from Airfix and going to get a Tornado to form a 617 Squadron set (checks the 1:72 Vulcan decals) - I am a returnee to the modelling scene so still class myself as a beginner but need to pointed in the right direction - you certainly do that - And your "waffle" is invaluable !
Nigel, thanks for the good video,
Nigel, I enjoy your intermediate vids. As someone who took an extended hiatus from the hobby. Your vids are chock full of refresher hints and tips, and a bunch of new tricks.
This is one of the reasons you are now my go to modelling channel.
You show things patiently so the non expert can learn how you learned by listening and learning from your mistakes....and you take your time and show everything!!
I hope you start to feel a bit better in the coming times...it does get better when you lose someone you love....i know having lost a son.
People are going to say that it is not the same....but a pet is a member of your family ,who loves you and you love them!!
It hurts just the same!!!
I think the difference between losing a family member or a pet is that pets depend on you their whole lives, family moves on, but OMG, I cannot imagine how it feels losing a Son.. I am so sorry for your loss.
As a ginger who paints on the sprue here's my opinion
It's not a mistake, it's battle damage 😂
I can't wait, this Saturday I get to crawl around the only flying Lanc in Canada.
Dear Nigel,
Thanks for this. I am sure that people will learn a great deal from this detailed and insightful presentation.
I myself certainly picked up some things including, if I may, details about some sort of shampoo which can regenerate one’s hair. Apparently it leaves you feeling revitalised- who knew!
Kind regards,
Z
Bloody ads!!
I agree, the Lancaster build is looking good, keep up the great Builds Nigel as Truly Appreciated ...
Regards
Hi Nigel, the Lancaster is coming along nicely, great to see you 'admit' to the painting error, but making mistakex in this hobby, is part of life, congratulations on the great work so far, take care and keep safe, best regards from a Kiwi living in Australia, Les
Thanks 👍
A couple of observations. It is worth paying for decent tools. Airbrushes require a great deal of cleaning verse a paint brush. Tamiya acrylics go on fine if their retarder is applied.
Progressing nicely 👌
The armour plate is turned down, not missing, presumably to allow the reader to see the detail behind the seat. I believe in the book they write that both distance determining methods, the lines on the Perspex and the wooden device, were used. Is it possible that different Lance used on the raid had different paint schemes. The interior colours depended upon when the Lanc’s were manufactured, according to the production date and batch, according to the Postlewaith series.
I believe with the type 464 they all would have the same colour schemes on the interior as they are all of a similar period.
only very very early lancs had a green bomb aimer's compartment and that's because they're Avro Manchesters coming off the production line, then altered at the end of the production into lancasters, some more tips: the dambusters lancaster also had smooth tires which i believe are treaded in the kit, they also had needle tip props rather than paddle blades, just a few things, but i think you could get away with paddle props, hope this helped Nigel.
Sorry Johnny but you are incorrect here. There are wartime colour pics on the assembly line in late '43 showing green noses. I even showed you a pic here of AJ-T with the green nose. The kit has smooth tyres, but not a smooth tail wheel, and both needle and paddle prop blades. I have used needle.
@@NigelsModellingBench ahh right sorry for the confusion, i seemed to have thought the dambusters had a black nose. thanks for the info.
No worries Johnny, 99% of people think as you did.
I've not finished watching this but I had to call out that painting and detailing interior will help everyone get better at hobby. I spent time with AVRO Shackleton bit of an early spy plane so painted the panels the radar screens fit the wing spars...close it up cant see FA ...however I learned a lot by doing the interior stuff.....I think there can be a mind set of wont see it wont paint it....if you take photos of your build...give yourself a record, so next project you can use your ref photos, or experience....I dont like seeing B&W photos of real aircraft taken from 40s as I struggle with is that green, grey and whats the shade of either? Where artistic licence and paints I have to me come into play
Trouble is Nigel you may have the original production drawings from the prototype, this may differ immensely from the aircraft that enters service or in fact ones that have a prolonged service life .
Unfortunately the prototype drawings always got archived. Later modifications drawings tended to be destroyed after the modification was implemented or the aircraft went out of service.
We came across this many times when restoring aircraft, so as you can guess old wreckage, pictures and verbal accounts are sometimes all you have.
I spent a full day on my back at Hendon tracing all the skin panels around a MK1 spitfire oil cooler because we could not find the original drawings, we also had wreckage and pictures to work off .
I also know this maintenance crews would do small modifications to the aircraft if the crew requested it and certainly interior painting was one of them , and I would have a guess this would have happened far earlier than you think, certainly when the RAF switch to night bombing. Vetran crews were more likely to request this and it probably only happened on a few of the bombers until it was fully implemented later in the war .
So my personal conclusion is it can be both black or green they are both right.
PS Nigel love the channel just my personal thoughts.
I’m enjoying this video, I must have missed why is the flight engineer’s seat cushion brown leather when as you say the rest is dark green ?
👍 👍 👍
Hi Nige, hope you are doing ok. Just to let you know this upload has that kind of stop motion playback for me
Thanks Steve. Not again!! I’m afraid I can’t sort it now, it was filmed months ago!!
