That's why it's *melodic* death metal, it's powerful and "catchy". :) I love this band and this woman and Jeff Loomis!
In her previous bands, Alyssa made "regular" rock vocals, or operatic (Nightwish style). But in Arch Enemy, she's following the growling (fry vocals) of the previous vocalist, Angela Gossow (who's manager of the band and has solo work and colabs). Growling, without technique, blows the vocal chords, damages the larinx, but Alyssa know how to do it properly. Try "The Eagle Flies Alone", "The World is Yours", "War Eternal", "Do or Die" (Amaranth feat Angela Gossow).
The amott brothers have been killing it on the guitars for two decades. So underrated

This is the only song I like much more with Angela.
The blond guitarist is Jeff Loomis, who was famous for his work in Nevermore, Conquering Dystopia and his solo releases, before joining Arch Enemy. Jeff Loomis is a true guitar hero in his own right, mostly for his 7-string work (he's had a 7-string signature guitar with Schecter for many years). Combined with Michael Amott this band has one of the best guitar lineups ever.

Swedish Metal: Hypocrisy, Tiamat, Dismember, Opeth, Dark Tranquility, In Flames, Meshuggah, Bathory, Soilwork, Candlemass, Katatonia, Therion, Marduk, Entombed, Dissection, The hunted, Hammerfall, Dark Funeral, Sabaton...
THERION are the best. Other bands are Draconian, Sister Sin, Liv Sin, Diablo Swing Orchestra, Beseech

Have seen them 5 times the past 6 years and they never dissappointed one of my best live experiences (en par with some very memorable ones from Ensiferum and Alestorm). One highlight was their tour together with Tribulation, Jinjer and Wintersun. Go catch them if they come near your town one day ;) Btw another one of my favorites from that Wacken show is "Bloodstained Cross"

they are specifically Melodic Death metal, her name is Alissa and she joined the band in 2014 replacing Angela Gossow, both are brutal but Angela just has a powerfull incomparable voice, if you want to check out the first songs with Alissa, check out War Eternal or Stolen Life, and if you want Angela, in my opinion Silent Wars or Nemesis (Live in Tokyo) to compare it.

The tall blond haired guitar player with the big hands is Jeff Loomis...he's probably one of the best guitar players in metal of the last 30 yrs...he has done some solo work and I'm a fan of his previous band Nevermore...check out something from them

That band is fucking awesome.
The awesome thing about her is that she can actually sing normally as well. She has an incredibly good vocal techniche to avoid getting her normal voice destroyed by screaming like this. Angela was sick too, both are goddesses

If im not all wrong that tall dude is Jeff Loomis, mostly famous for being the guitarist of Nevermore. Very sadly their singer Warren Dane died 2017. I love Nevermore and I think their album Dead Heart in a Dead World is at least in top 10 metal albums of all time.
Bloodstained Cross, or Heart of Darkness.. This band pulled me in and it seems ike I always go back to them. Very good medicine for me these days.. To me, this is precious metal.. Love it..

I'd suggest checking out AE's "We Will Rise MFVF 2010" with Angela Gossow, their former singer and currently their manager (she wanted to step back to spend more time with her family and picked Alissa as her successor). Both great growlers but with very different growling techniques. Cheers!

Alissa can not only scream/growl, she's a pretty good singer as well. Before this, she sang in the Symphonic Metal band Kamelot.
She was featured in two of there songs. Her former band was The Agonist.

The bassist is Bigfoot hiding in the open. Met em, he was huge, and I’m a big guy.

bassstisb Bro, I was shocked at how few people showed for the meet and greet (I blame Atlanta traffic). I also met Trivium at the same event, another group of absolutely stellar guys. They all seem to really, truly appreciate support as opposed to expecting it. Btw, the meet and greet wasn’t expensive at all. Worth it bro.

You will probably love their former singer even more! 🙂 Angela Gossow is an absolutely beast. Bloodstained Cross, Yesterday is Dead and Gone, Ravenous and Blood is on your hands are some of their better songs with Angela as the singer.

I'm starting to think nordic metal really might be your thing. If you like Arch Enemy, they've been around for ages and have a mountain of songs. Vocalist change in there though, but both are great.

The trick is to not use your vocal chords, the technical name of growls and screams are false chords vocals. The false chords are just above your vocal chords and are used very sparringly in normal singing, but growl and scream uses only the false chords, mixed with complex sound manipulation a lot of the lower growls f.ex. uses strict mouth shapes which makes it hard to articulate certain consonants, screaming almost uses no tongue and the mouth shape is close to an open normal singing mouth shape so it's easier to enunciate properly. It's very interesting from a purely voice manipulation perspective.

Go back and listen to Nightwish - Your's is an Empty Hope. But pay attention to Floor in the chorus. I think you missed something in your first reaction.
