Had the same issue on my 2014 GS. I up graded the oil from the recommended Castrol 5W 40, to Motul 5W 40, V300 ,then rode the bike for 50 miles. The bike now has a smooth as silk gear change, the engine is much smoother and the clutch bite is now very progressive and predictable and clutch drag has become a thing of the past.
The GSLC has a wet clutch as compare to the dry clutch of the GSA. Its very normal if you just press the lever lightly to have the grinding sound. Unless i we are not talking about the grind sound. I have no idea.
Wet clutch or dry, the gearchange was terrible until the Thrust washer upgrade. This bike was traded in for the 2014 R1200GSA. Gearchange on this bike is good enough, just like the fixed 2013 bike.
+patzx12 may i know where is the thrust washer? is it at foot peg or clutch lever? Just wonder how this thrust washer work for this problem. And do you mean "upgrade" a non-BMW part or...? thanks.
Wet clutch is floating in oil when the clutch is disengaged. Could this be hydrostatic linkage? Do you notice the problem isn't there when the rear wheel is held stationary?
patzx12 I have the same problem with mine, its also finding a false neutral when shifting gears and screen goes blank and return to previous gear. You experience this at all? Also how did the Thrust washer help improve your problem?
Patzx12, I have this exact issue as you show in this video. Please can you tell me what your actually did to resolve the drag on the clutch. I had the mod done a couple of years ago which I believe is the thrust washer recall. I currently have the clutch cover off and when I pull the lever in the inner friction and plain plates carrier is heavy to turn. Any advise other than replace the bike with a newer one would be a help. That is not an option. Thanks allot. Ryan
This was 3 BMW's ago. Had a 14 and 16 GSA no issues, The 13 when sorted by BMW was just as good as my present 16 bike. I didnt touch the bike myself due to it being in warranty. Before it was fixed it drove me nuts riding it in town or in traffic.
Hi, do you confirm that there is a fix from the dealer for this? Your wheel was not spinning anymore? I am asking because I went several times to get this fixed and the answer was always the same “nothing we can do, it works as designed”...
My 2015 is in for the same problem, just got the go ahead from BMW after a week but only for the clutch. The guy in the work shop thinks it's damaged the gear box as well so still waiting the outcome
my friend's 2013 LC GS has similar problem when depress clutch lever fully then shifting-up to 2nd, 3rd gear in the riding. Even just done 10,000km maintenance, still the same symptom. This symptom is just like the gear isn't engaged at first time and has this clank noise. Any one has the same symptom and solved it?
I have a 2014 BMW R 1200 GSA the bike has currently 7,700k miles on it and all service has been performed. I have been experiencing several problems with my clutch as follows: 1) While in neutral and shifting into 1st gear it surges forward. 2) While trying to find neutral I have to shift from 2nd down because shifting from 1st to neutral is almost impossible to find. 3) While riding and changing gears I experience the bike finding a false neutral IE; When shifting from 5th to 6th gear the motorcycle will on occasion more than once find a false neutral in by doing so as described below. I’ve notice in other gear ranges but more so in 5th - 6th gear the motorcycle will briefly show 6th gear then entire screen goes blank and motorcycle screen shows 5th gear again and appears to be lapsed with a false neutral. It appears this happens more frequently when the motorcycle has been running for 45+ minutes. Temp gauge all shows within normal limits. Has anyone else had similar problems and how did they correct the problem?
Issues so far - R1200GS LC 2013 New Shape 40000km on the clock +- replaced both front and rear rims twice (Spokes), heavy wear on rear brake pads, wobbly front end at 140kmh with paniers, no pannier wobbly at 170km/h. Rear right indicator melted, excessive wear on grips. Three new batteries, replaced rear shock, replaced charger, replaced burnt out stator coil, now having fork bridge issues and gearbox issues not to mention the windshield mounts keep cracking and breaking I replace every service. Normal commuting roughly 80km a day. Completed 1 big trip +- 6000kms and of that 400km was dirt. Biggest money pit ever. Selling mine as soon as I can.
My 2014 model does exactly the same thing ,brought it back to the dealer ,thank god it has a 3 year warranty ,BMW You can fix it ,a great BMW mechanic said it was the friction plate ,Now this is a major job as a new clutch assembly has to be ordered and replaced ,10 hours labor to split the motor at 170 dollars an hour. plus parts. It was dropped at the dealers on the 7/09/2016.Now lets see how long this will take i Reckon about 4 to 5 weeks. If and when BMW give them the go ahead to carry out the work.Prove me wrong BMW.I had my mates 2016 model on the stand and it does not do it yet?. I will keep you informed on the developments.I hint a live in Brisbane. 9 months warranty still left.

Hi BrianDo you live in a cold climate? I am about to buy this oil for mine so I was wondering if the 5W40 is the right choice for Canada

just got well rid of one of these ..... the most troublesome bike ive ever owned in 40 years of biking
Did you find the problem?
Did you get the problem rectified?
Sorry ,the air head ,is a major job replacing the clutch ,the newer model is in the front and uses a wet clutch.
Cioè, migliore il vecchio modello?
ok, watched de last 20 sc... pretty bad that... is the bike still in warranty?
Wet clutch is floating in oil when the clutch is disengaged. Could this be hydrostatic linkage? Do you notice the problem isn't there when the rear wheel is held stationary?
The bike qualified for a THRUST WASHER upgrade and its much improved. Now a good bike, still not a great gear change but OK
patzx12 Good to know, thanks.
