I'm so angry. My pensioner mum was paranoid enough before this that she wouldn't be able to pay for heating bill with the winter fuel payment that she wouldn't put her heating on throughout the house last winter and just used her gas fire in one room. She ended up with pneumonia. Can you imagine what she and others are going to be like this coming winter. The MPs should be named and shamed. Disgraceful!!!! 😠
Her dual fuel standing charge is more than the winter fuel payment, so put her heating on low and avoid her house becoming damp which will cost far more to put right.

As a retired nurse I can recall the time before the winter fuel allowance. During the eighties and nineties when the causality was filled with elderly frail vulnerable patients lying in space blankets with hypothermia on the verge of death. This is not a dramatic statement it’s fact. I can recall the impact it had on me as a young nurse at the time. I believe we will see this again because of fuel poverty !

Young unemployed people on benefits have paid bugger all into the system. I never got child benefit or tax credits not being a parent so I've already paid into the system for others for 40+years. Maybe when or if you get to retire from work you'll have a diffeent attitude to older people.

If you can tell me what their policies are on immigration, the NHS, winter fuel allowance or any other policies they might have, I'll take a look. But seeing how many of their intended candidates were found to be "not suitable" I'm a little hesitant anyway.

The current pension rates for UK pensioners is £169.50 per week for men born before April 1951 and women born before April 1953 people born after those dates get £221.20 per week, a difference of £206.80 per month. Why not give all pensioners the same? That would make a huge difference to the lower paid pensioners and get the money to those people who for whatever reason do not claim the pension credit they are entitled to.

If your mum has a few medical conditions she may be eligible to claim Attendance Allowance which is non means tested. Its worth a look.

The way MPs vote has always been a matter of public record, most people can't be bothered to look for themselves.

In 1985 I was working aon a government scheme in North Wales to find eligable people on benefits to get draft exclusion on their houses and we found hundreds of pensioners not claiming their pensions and living off unlabled canned food , often hoping they would get dog or cat food that night for their dinner. I find it a total disgrace there is still no safety net in place for these vulnerable people who often had no relatives looking out for them and didn't know, like today with UC credits they were owed that money. We were trained up and went to every house to identify these poor people , who had worked hard their entire lives as there are now so many who are not claiming what they are entitled to. The pension was meant to provide a living wage and that is the way it should be now. What a total disgrace 800,000 not claiming and so living in dire poverty.Many still were too scared to claim!
