  • Natalie was born at 28 weeks as a result of fetal alcohol syndrome. Stephanie intended to find an adoptive family for her daughter upon birth, but after seeing Natalie for the first time instead found sobriety at rehab.
    Stephanie now credits Natalie for saving her life and is doing her best to give her the life she deserves.

    I started drinking alcohol years ago as a teenage, spent my whole life fighting alcohol addiction. Got diagnosed with cptsd. Not until my wife recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 8 years totally clean. Never thought I would be saying this about mushrooms.

      Mushrooms are very medicinal. This is why anybody familiar with psilocybin and any other kind of fungi will tell you, "They are alive." They have a very ancient wisdom. To my experience, all mushrooms have always said, "Pay attention to your life. How you think, how you feel, and what will you do with the information that you always knew, but now are seeing in this point of view." This is why mushrooms are so respected in tribal cultures. This mental health treatment works for me too. Half micro doses do the trick for me. At least a few days at a time with lengthy time in between. Never addictive. Thank you for sharing this point!

    This one's hard for me. Sadly, my mother wasn't like this woman. She abused me, and constantly drank. She denies that she needs help for her addiction. She also allowed men to hit her in front of me and my younger siblings. For the non-disabled people out there, disabled people like myself are two to three times more llikely to be abused than the regular population. My advice to you is, if you see something, say something! No one, disabled or otherwise, deserves to be abused or neglected!

She has permanent mental and emotional disabilities and developed her own drug addiction. My parents spent $$$$ on therapy, legal fees, etc trying to help, but her life a mess. You hurt a lot of people when you're in addiction in many ways, not only your own children. It's terrible. And you feel guilt and the worst shame imaginable. In this woman's case, she sobered up and became a good mom to her kids, why bother taking them? As a recovered addict myself, I can tell you I still lay awake because of my guilt and shame, none of the bad things I did were me, they were the substances that had taken over my mind body and spirit and I'd give anything to go back in time and change things. Jail would have lead me to suicide probably, I needed treatment and kind support. An iron fist isn't always the answer.

    • @CandraJade84
      @CandraJade84 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@yesleksmith There are things that can never be made up for. If an alcohol addicted man brutally raped his wife and then started therapy and became sober, would you expect the wife to stay with him and show "kind support"? I wouldn’t. But the victim of this mother's doings still lives with her. Natalie probably doesn't understand yet what her mother did to her, but some day she will and she will realize that the person she is supposed to trust is the one who robbed her of a normal life. With destroying this child's life she lost the right to be her mother.
      I'm the daughter of an alcohol addict mother. She drank herself to death. And she always said that she would have quit if people had been kinder to her, her life wouldn’t have been so stressfull, her marriage would have been better... It were always the others who should have behaved differently. The harsh truth is: Only you are responsible for your life. And if you can’t stop drinking when noone supports you, no one loves you and no one is willing to give you a second chance then you haven't overcome your addiction.

      Generally I would agree, not because I'm judging, but because the child deserves a parent who can take care of them. I have an adopted child and the parents didn't try at all to change. However, this mother did change. Not in time to prevent consequences, unfortunately, but if she became clean and was trustworthy at that point forward, I don't see a legitimate reason to take a child away, except just to punish her. You'd have to be able to trust the parent, obviously. But if a parent is safe and loving, a child is almost always better off with their biological parent. That's a big if. As much as I value adoption, I see how it traumatizes even infants. It is a loss and an identity crisis that they deal with their whole lives, even when there's no memory. I am still all for adoption, but in this case it does not seem it was necessary. Maybe she had a family member who had temporary custody while she was in rehab. But I think it turned out for the best. As long as the mother was parenting well, the daughter was better off to stay with her. It's hard to see kids get hurt, but you've got to look at it going forwards, not back.

At first, I thought she was the adoptive mother because that’s usually what you see. The real mother either loses custody, or they just abandon their children, and you never hear from them again. I'm so glad Natalie's mom got sober. I'm surprised she was allowed to have custody of her though. My son is adopted. His birth mom drank and she got no prenatal care. When he was born, the hospital called Child Protective Services on her. He was in terrible shape and about 6 weeks premature. She told me the doctor told her that my son most likely had Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. She had decided to keep him about a week before his birth. And I had told my husband after I met her that I had a feeling she was going to keep him. (we didn't know about her drinking then) She kept my son for a week and then decided he would be better off with us. Thankfully he does not have FAS. It was an open adoption and I reconnected with my son's birth mother last year. He's met his birth parents and his siblings. His birth parents are nice people. And my son is so happy to meet his younger siblings.

      Ridiculing or judging her will not change the situation. It will not help her, the child, or any other family dealing with FAS or addiction.
      The most constructive thing we can do going forwards, is to encourage those with addictions to seek help. Fear of judgment and stigmatisation is a big barrier to finding that help.
      Addiction is not the same as 'just loving to party'. It physiologically changes your brain. It is not enjoyable.
      Of course, the mother is responsible. She took full accountability. There is nothing more she can do. Being digusted with her helps no one.

      I wish there was more informational material available for not only the publics education but also for healthcare workers. More than 60% of pregnancies are unplanned and FASD can be triggered/caused by as little as one drink. It could be a homeless or low income woman on the street, an alcoholic or an upper class socialite. One dinner party with friends where you have that one glass of wine with dinner only to find out a few days later you are pregnant. The brain begins to develop at approx 6wks gestation, a time when many women are just beginning to get the signs or symptoms she may be pregnant. You don't have to be an alcoholic for it to happen to you. It can happen to anyone from any walk of life.
      It's also often misdiagnosed as ODD, ADHD and even as mental illness, girls are also more difficult to identify than boys as boys tend manifest the behaviors more clearly than girls whose symptoms tend to be masked by females natural instinct to mimic.

    I find it a little ridiculous that when any other kid with a condition is on this channel, the comments are filled with people telling them how they're just like anyone else and aren't lesser, but the comments on this video are constantly talking about how the mother "ruined" Natalie's life forever. Natalie's mother has to face the consequences of her actions every day and I'm sure she would have changed them if she could go back. Addiction is brutal and can ruin people. But Natalie seems like a very sweet and happy soul and there's no reason to be telling her family in the comments that her life is somehow horrible when other children on here don't get that treatment.

    • @primerprime596
      @primerprime596 2 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      That's because the other parents didn't ruin their children's lives. Their children were born different almost purely due to the genetic lottery, their parents were in no way responsible for what happens on a genetic level.
      Natalie's mother, on the other hand, would've known full well about FAS. It's one of the first things expecting mothers are told at the hospital, and there are signs and warnings against it on literally every website and post about childcare. Yet she still let her addiction dominate her, and while Natalie isn't inferior to anyone, I'm certain that at some point she would've probably wished to be like most other kids. Her mother did this to her, and there's no place in Heaven for a lady that chose her vices over her angel of a child.

      @@primerprime596 you clearly are ignorant on addiction. I believe Natalie’s mom, who is now in recovery, is an extremely loving mother who will give nothing but the best for her children. She may be in heaven before your judgmental self….who knows.

      She caused great bodily harm to her own child, and for that she deserves a punishment. Being addicted is no excuse, you ignorant person. You are one of those people who do not judge a drunk driver, aren’t you? If someone drives while being drunk, that certain person deserves jail time. It is the same case with this horrible woman here.

      Addiction is brutal. It’s still sad her daughter was hurt because of it though. Nobody chooses to be an addict and I’m sure she regrets how it affected her daughter, but she changed the entire trajectory of another persons life. I feel like we shouldn’t completely minimize an addicts actions when they end up harming other people.

    • @AtMyHappyPlace
      @AtMyHappyPlace 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @@zoehicks880 I agree. We should not minimize the actions, however, in this case we see Natalie’s mom went to treatment, and has been living a sober life for six years. She clearly has made changes and is a force for good for her children. She can’t undo her past actions, but she can do everything in her power to give her kids the best life now.

    I wonder how many of the people leaving sanctimonious, preachy replies towards anyone who _dares_ to criticize the mother, would still keep that same holier-than-thou energy if a person with an addiction did something to _them_ that changed their life trajectory (e.g. permanent chronic pain and injuries from a DUI crash) or otherwise seriously harmed them. Just wondering.

    I‘m sad to read that people want to see the mom in jail. I see the point in condemning the consumption of alcohol, that shouldn‘t have happened, that’s clear.. but it makes no sense to put the mom in jail. a.) she is sober, b.) she can take care of her kids. Losing her mom, wouldn’t help her child. Nothing can make the damage undone. The only thing the mum can do is staying on track and continue to be honest with her child, even though questions and strong emotions will arise from the girl at some point pointing all to the question: „why did you let this happen?“ it‘s such a sad story indeed, but punishments and hating the mom wouldn‘t change anything.

Is it tragic that she drank while pregnant with her first? Absolutely. Should her shame over her past sins be greater than the joys of her success? Absolutely not.
