  • 三条地方は「仏都三条」といわれる土地柄。江戸時代の元禄3年建立の東本願寺別院造営に参加した職人によって仏壇の製造が始められたといわれている。優れた錺金具製造技術には定評がある。
    At the end of 17th century, local craftsmen were greatly influenced by those from kyoto who were invited on the occasion of the construction of a temple. Later, when this temple played a leading role in promulgating the teachings of Buddhism, the manufacture of butsudan began. Their techniques of fabricating metal fittings are highly praised.

    What an amazing cherished item. It's 100% true, we all have loved ones who've passed that we wish we could see again. What a beautiful way to honor them.
    My favorite part - "Naturally, we make them the best we can" I've never heard anyone say that about their work. In America everyone complains, expects others to feel sympathy for them, give them things (ie: a helping hand) and eventually they go see a doctor and get diagnosed for an ailment they don't have. Not saying there aren't people who truly have ailments but I believe most people diagnosed are just complainers for having to do what we all do - work, take care of our family, pay bills, run errands, have relationships and taking care of ourselves. It's hard but it's life, so find something you enjoy is my theory.

      We are conditioned to see ourselves as victims by our American leaders, always emphasizing our weaknesses instead of encouraging our strengths. We have generations of welfare residents who wait with their hands out for someone to feed and clothe them. Japan cherishes their elderly, whereas ours are robbed and disrespected. That's something the politicians should work on.

      @@lucygray6162 I agree 100%. I'm living proof of that. My Mom is fully disabled, she has MS (Multiple Sclerosis) and DDD (Degenerative Disc Disease). On Mother's Day (this year) she collapsed, spent the next 6 weeks in the hospital - 14 of those days in a coma, on life support. She had total kidney failure which led to dialysis, massive internal bleeding b/c her large & small intestine shredded, a major heart attack (her first), her lungs fully stopped working (hence the life support) and on a feeding tube. She had pneumonia and sepsis b/c of her weakened immune system. Beyond all that, despite her disabilities, she's maintained good health until recently. I gave up everything to care for her over 10 yrs ago now and I don't regret that decision in the slightest, regardless of how tough times can get (like recently). When people learn of what I do for a living they comment on the rarity, on what a "good daughter" I am for caring for my "ailing Mother" and my response is always the same, "Well yeah, she's my Mom?" It confuses me why so many people find what I'm doing endearing and it speaks volumes of the type of society we live in, that we've turned into, if hundreds of people throughout the years constantly find my choice to be rare. It sadness me to no end.
      Not to mention, when looking back, I tried to think of cultural interests (history) taught in school, and learning of our ancestors in ways that we can connect by learning how things were done, passing down the knowledge, and all I learned in school was war, oppression and hatred. The conflicts between color, race and creed - it's why I cherish other cultures so much. The way they treat one another, stay with family, honor their ancestral ways - it's beautiful and we would all be so lucky to have something cherished passed down. Not just a family heirloom (if it hasn't been pawned) but an actual skill.

    High quality cabinetmaking techniques in the execution, engraving, stamping, cutting of ornamental copper and brass, lacquering, decorative painting, gilding, all joined to affirm the beauty and accompany the Buddhist practice. Thank you for these discoveries of ancient know-how, always practiced with excellence. The video is remarkable !!! Merci from French Brittany

    I’m catholic. But our home altar is not as elaborate as those of the Japanese Buddhist. I’m so envious. I want to make one for my late father.

    This was a beautiful display of craftsmanship, thank you. However, there was one small problem: ALTER means to change something - ALTAR is the center of focus during worship or medication. You built a wonderful altar.

    I wonder if people make less room for the alters because they can't afford it. The immense hard work that goes into every piece - it can't be affordable. Sad really. At least that's what I hope it is, I'd hate to think people just stopped caring.

    • @lucygray6162
      @lucygray6162 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Most likely the issue is having the room in space-squeezed Japan, followed by the premium pricing of such complex work. Many different nationalities honor the dead with much smaller versions of handcrafted altars. Most keep it to themselves rather than risk accusations of witchcraft or idolatry by ignorant neighbors. That's the sad thing, for where would we be without our ancestors?

      @@lucygray6162 Touche! I like the way you think Lucy! It's nice finding a like minded person in today's society. So many converse 'their' opinions based on the masses, to fit in and be apart of the whole. In truth, they spend so much time trying to be accepted they have no idea what they really believe. Ya know?
      No one should have to hide their belief when it comes to connecting to those they miss. Everyone should be given the opportunity to celebrate their memories, honor the person (or people) they're forever connected to, without the worry of cost or ridicule.
