    Great presentation!!.. I personally prefer the Tampa version with the Genoa salami, like you well
    said it was the Italian influence in Ybor at the time of the cigars factory workers. I noticed your delicate marinating of meats is the secret for flavors. Most shops don't take this extra step... Tampa has a lot of Spanish, Italian and German influence.. that said.. Flavor!! Please investigate about the Puertorican tripleta sandwich. Love the flow of the video.. Saludos 👍

    Yep, Salami on the Tampa version is from the Italian influence.. from the Cigar factory workers.. neither has to be pressed, that was not the original it came later.. Good Job Rus! These sandwiches were made like this because they did not need refrigeration when they take them to factory for their lunches..

    • @SmokyRibsBBQ
      @SmokyRibsBBQ  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes I mentioned the Italian influence in the video. Lack of refrigeration is also why they didn’t use mayonnaise. Thanks for stopping by it’s been awhile!

    Both sandwiches looked delicious, I like the Miami version better since I don’t really like salami.
    I’m Cuban and from time to time I make my own sandwiches, I like to pour on top of the roasted pork a little bit of a mojo I make with salt, sour oranges, cumin and crushed garlic.
    I roast and ground my own cumin, the store one is not good IMO, makes a huge difference on the flavor.

    Love a good Cuban sandwich
    If you want to change it up
    Swap mustard with a good tangy bbq sauce
    It’s a game changer

    I always thought they put a spicy mustard on that sandwich. Like a habanero spice or a beer mustard something. Either way I love that sandwich. 😋 with a cold beer to wash it down. 👍

      All the videos I seen researching this shows French's mustard. Something that was around way back in the early 1900's and didn't need refrigeration. Thanks for watching!

    As a Cuban of 52 years old living in Tampa and eating Cubans since I was a kid I choose the Miami version
    PS the ham used in the Cuban sandwich is called serrano ham and sliced thin

      Thank you, in my research for this video I only heard sweet ham from Tampa and Miami. I'll look into the serrano ham for sure! Your the 2nd person today to mention it.

    Historically speaking, Tampa had a much larger Cuban population up until the late '50s early '60s during the Cuban revolution. This cigar factory is in Tampa were built well over 100 years ago. They were man by mostly Cuban immigrants, though there was a large population of Spanish and Italian immigrants there as well. So for which one's more authentic, who really knows, though for which one was the original I would put my money on Tampa. Also, it specifically the Tampa one that gets a little bit of mayo. As far as how delicious they are, and someone who's probably had over a hundred Cuban sandwiches, I can attest that they are fantastic.

      @SmokyRibsBBQ  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes very good indeed. The history in interesting, and like many things, you will read different opinions on what the original was. The fact that there was little to no refrigeration in those days is the primary reason only mustard was used, since it doesn't require refrigeration. Seems plausible to me, but who really knows for sure.

    The other subtle factor is how much butter you coat the sandwich and plancha with. If you go way heavy on the butter you get a crispier more golden bread but it washes away the flavor of the other sandwiches you already made and there is something to be said for that steak infusion from previous sandwiches on a dirty plancha. If you're between Tampa and Miami on the west coast Sopressa Cafe on Tamiami and Naples is your best bet and on the east coast Cubano BY on Old Dixie in Vero Beach is the way to go. And special shoutout to Casa Santiago in Palm Beach Area on Okeechobee has the best soups in the state if you don't count the twenty-dollar bowl of she-crab soup from Frenchy's. The Seinfield soup guy can't come close to Casa Santiago.

      @SmokyRibsBBQ  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well luckily this was only my second cook on the new plancha, so nothing was affecting the flavor from previous cooks. But I'm sure in time I will have many cooks on it. It's cast iron, so in my mind, the more it's used the better it will taste.

  • @RedKing64
    @RedKing64 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have my own recipe for that. I use parmesan crusted french style bread, a special sauce of mayo, mustard and sweet relish and grated carrot. Virginia ham, mantain the swiss cheese but instead of mojo pork I use meat from sweet honey bbq ribs, cooked on the oven until they fall apart like pulled pork. ALSO hot pressed with garlic butter, I call it The Cubano Americano. AND HEY if you use this recipe and sell it, BE SURE TO at least give me Credit when you are being interviewed for the hottest New sandwich in America....
