    I remember when this first came out, so many people were mad that Kanye was included in a song that featured DJ Premier, Rakim, KRS-One, and Nas. W/ only 2 albums out at that point, I could understand. I didn't mind as much though bc I was 10-11 when The College Dropout came out and Kanye was probably the first artist I got into from the start. While Kanye was never the lyricist that these guys were, it's undeniable that he's one of the most influential artists in hip-hop history and deserving of his spot on this song.

    • @1011skarn
      @1011skarn ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Kanye is a magnificent producer.... and that's it. The fact that he made it big as a rapper is due to the diluted pool of actual talent in the 2000 and 2010s. There are some great ones, but not as many as the 90s. He is an average MC at best.

      Much better to do a track with some of the greats and get shredded by them than to only work with MCs that can't even compete with you. Maybe it makes you look bad when Eminem comes and murders you on your own record like with Hov, but is only working with whack rappers because you know you're better than them really what's best for you as a lyricist? Kanye's not the greatest lyricist in the game, but you can never say he's afraid to take risks.

      Kanye left no memorable impression on this. Rakim's "timeless, so age don't count in the booth, when your flow stays submerged in the Fountain of Youth" line stuck with me the first time I heard it. Nas' "yeah, you went platinum, yeah that's nice, now let me see you do the same thing twice" line was absolutely scathing. His line about cars, too, shows how your priorities shift so heavily once you actually achieve success (KRS did the same with the line about gold chains). Kanye's verse lacked anything like that. KRS-One explained his hope to "hear more local MCs" on the radio, explained the difference between simply being a rapper and being an emcee, and then finished with a line about positivity. Kanye did none of that.
      You can like Kanye all you want (I like many of his songs, especially ones that were recorded around this time), but don't pretend for a second he has the same lyrical skills as the rest of them.

    Your favorite rapper will tell you Kanye is a legend in his own right, as a producer and an MC.He's won more Grammy's in 9 years what most people never seen for at least 30, and he's been respected by every artist on this track. College Dropout, Late Registration, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, are considered modern masterpieces in music today, so don't even say Kanye isn't or already is an all time great.

    Rakim's bars on this are completely amazing. I love the way that Premo plays his killer "fountain of youth" line at the original, slower speed (Rakim did the whole verse that slow, but Premo sped it up and fit it to the beats, yet another testament to his skill).

    kanye was an up and coming classic at the time. that's why they have him, and yea he deserves to be on this song

    • @laxlegend93
      @laxlegend93 10 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Nah that ain't why he's on the track. And no he didn't deserve to be in on it. These guys are legends. Like you say, Kanye was just a rookie. His verse was good though, but to have Kanye spit a verse next to three guys like Nas, Rakim, and KRS One, he just seems out of place.

      laxlegend93 Dude WTF what do you mean by he didnt deserve to be on the track. Of course those are hiphop legends right there and he looked up to all of them when he was in his dad's basement making beats and takes DJ Premier as one of his inspirations. Kanye is the brain child of this track that is why u see him taking part in the production because he co produced it. So that is utter bullshit wen u say he didnt deserve to be in it.

      Exactly, and Kanye was a great artist, and he is still great, he's just not making the same type of hip-hop. People are judging his music by his behavior as of lately. Not to mention I'm sure these legends on this track thought he was fit for the track.
