Indeed, that was 2008... Today, with 50Hz rectifiers replaced with SMPS's almost everywhere, we also need to care about the ripple currents at 100 kHz plus, - but the basics like C and Vmax still stand.

12 years later. I for the first time I'm my life successfully worked on a PCB and swaped a 8.4uF 400v cap with a scavenged 10uF 400 v cap on my led room 30W light. Thanks for the heads-up about the polarity or I would have surely messed it up. 12 yeas and still helping people to this day. To the point shot and crisp information. Thanks a lot.

This video is a life saver man, thank you for giving a capacitor replacement tutorial that isnt an hour and a half of rambling, short and to the point, I learned more in this two and a half minutes than most videos. Broke out the soldering iron and fixed a Sega Genesis.

  • @Kraftwerk2014

A thing I would add to the end of the video: When you face a high voltage capacitor, you will get shocked if you touch positive and negative pins. In order to avoid electric shock, just take a screwdriver and make short circuit between positive and negative pins before removing the capacitor. Just with insulated gloves, lift up the board and make short circuit ( put screwdriver between pins in order to short circuit the capacitor, so it will be discharged and you will not get eletric shock ). You will be able to handle it with no fear. btw nice tutorial! Once I learnt about capacitors, I had in mind this and you prove it to me that it works like a charm!

I kept looking for a video that would explain the voltage rating. Yours was the only one I found that explained the voltage rating of a capacitor. The video is more than 14 years old but still so informative. Old is gold. 🙂

@ravengious V=IR meaning that for a fixed resistance (such as your body) more volts means more amps, meaning more danger. And yeah it doesn't take much current to kill you. 50 volts is enough to cause pain. Discharging a 100V cap through your skin will leave a nice burn mark. Anyone who tells you otherwise is a twit who is confusing static electricity charges (high voltage but low stored energy) with low impedance voltage sources. This includes many high school physics teachers.
