This vid was a lotta fun to make. Been wanting to talk about SHe-ra for a while so figured with the new season coming out I should share my thoughts on the show!

With season 4 they fixed the whole underdeveloped character things. They explored more of the princesses and the Horde soldiers.
I KNOW!!! like every small problem character-wise got FIXED. Except for Swift Wind but him just existing sets me off.
It was a bit of a struggle though watching Glimmer who was clearly wrong double down on the bad decision. But hey if we can forgive Catra, forgiving Glimmer is a walk in the park!

Catra astronomically more so than Glimmer, because she was maliciously trying to mess up the world to give herself some self worth.
But Glimmer’s only issue is that she didn’t listen to her friends, was insensitive to how having Adora’s abusive mother figure just stroll around the castle and listen to Shadow Weaver more so than Adora.
Mehhhh Glimmer is still horrible. She's a terrible daughter and terrible friend. And never develops. Any lesson she learns she immediately forgets

But I’m still begging for a Catra Redemption arc in the final season and it’s going to have to be as genuine and hard to earn as possible in the final season and I expect that to start happen in the second half of the 5th season. Cause Catra has to genuinely want redemption for herself nobody else can help her up, which is why I’m intrigued on how Glimmer and Catra forced to work together to survive on Horde Prime’s ship will be the catalyst to starting her redemption.
Reminiscing of Zuko and Katara imprisoned together in Ba Sing Se’s underground crystal catacombs. Only let’s hope for a good ending to come out of this.
Or she’ll probably die the tragic Villain she’s become in siding with Horde Prime in his ranks and challenge Adora and all of Etheria in a desperate attempt to give herself Self worth, but I’m doubting that alternative is going to happen with how the ending of 4th season looks for her in my opinion.
3 things I want in She-Ra’s Final season.
1. Catra’s Redemption arc
2. Catra, Scorpia Ana’s Entrapta reunion with major emotional feels.
3 Catradora endgame (or at least some conflict when seeing they have a bigger enemy to take down. Aka Horde Prime and his clone army. And not then Glimmerdora since it’s still able to be healthy even though I still like Catradora much more personally.

The thing is, when animals can’t talk when they’re mad or being annoying it’s cute, because they’re animals and they can’t talk. But when they can talk we kinda treat them more like humans and when they do something wrong it’s less cute and less acceptable. It’s just something I’ve noticed

You're more likely to be toleranr of someone below than someone equal to you, like children for instance because well they're children and what do you expect or you think you can't change their behavior sp automatically you find a way to make it seem cool, but here swift wind is an actual person... horse thing but he can be talked to, you kinda have that expectation for him to be at the same standard as you then

Adora didn't know what an aunt was. Does she even know about sex? I feel like the relationship with Catra could be a bit one sided, with Catra knowing she is/was into Adora, and Adora being oblivious to Catra's feelings, and her own feelings. Or Adora isn't aware of her sexuality at all

Yeah like it’s clear how sheltered she was, I think most horde soldiers are. I mean, they’re practically brainwashed and living in some pseudo-apocalyptic zone. Adora doesn’t have a clear grasp on what a motherly figure is, she didn’t even know she was on the bad guy’s side. But I doubt the whole sexuality thing will come into play since this is a children’s show, like they won’t just have an episode where Adora discovers what sex is. But given how many times Shadow weaver has twisted the word “love” by manipulating both Catra and Adora I doubt they both actually have a healthy concept about what love is.
Bullshit. You can know about your sexual orientation without knowing what sex is or how it works. Hell, Children are the biggest example of this.
It would be understandable, she didn't know what fun was until Bo and Glimer showed her what it was. She grew up around orphans. Different types of family bonds would not have been talked about at all. Sex would have been a forbidden topic in the Hord. They only pride themselves on work and duty. We may never know they could have taken drugs as kids that killed all sexual feelings.

the show is lead by a lesbian and the crew is mostly lgbtq+. theyre doing their very best with what dreamworks will allow.
There's also only one confirmed straight couple compared to two lgbt ones (and strong hints that other characters are lgbt). Imho, I think it'd be kind of odd if they only showed one type of relationship (gay or straight), and I think they're doing a good job about displaying multiple different ones while still not being a show about romance. Even Mermista and Sea Hawk have a very different relationship dynamics compared to the stereotypical straight one.

Kinda. Mykah & Angela were also a couple and their relationship has been discussed several times even if they weren't physically connected during the timeline of the show.

Just chiming in to say I love Glimmer. I know some may find her off-putting, and even a little annoying, but I feel like she's really important to the development of the show and the depiction of "good" vs "evil" that they are going for. Glimmer is like a foil to Catra. She's been raised by the alliance but has to be talked out of doing bad things by her friends, like when she wanted to kidnap Catra and hold her hostage. I would LOVE to see them hang out, Glimmer and Catra could bond over their common values and shared experiences. And Catra's redemption arc could begin.
TBH I know we're all rooting for Catra but I just love Glimmer and I can't help it.
glimmer has flaws, to be sure, and definitely isn't as much of a "paragon" hero as bow or catra. the show definitely doesn't pretend like they aren't there. she clearly strggles with the pressure being put on her as queen, and seems to take a very black and white morality stance, as opposed to some of the other characters, such as adora (who has had friendships with people from the horde in the past). i think that that is a lot of what people end up not liking about her, since the show does a great job of portraying nearly every villain character in a sympathetic light. however, these flaws feel very natural to her character given that she has been raised to despise the horde, and she lost her father to them at a very young age. i know she's made bad decisions, and her season 4 character arc might have turned a few people against her, but season 4 isnt the end of her character arc, and i'm hoping that being forced to work with a character like catra, who has opposed the alliance for so long, in season 5 will grant a satisfying conclusion to that arc.
also, tbh, i love that they gave the stereotypical "sparkly princess" (i mean, her name is glimmer for fucks sake) these types of deep-set character flaws, i don't think i've ever seen that in a show

that moment you understand that dreamworks was the actual reason that the show had to dance around the confirmation of adora and catra's relationship/feelings beyond saying "it's complicated." bc in truth noelle stevenson was fighting the whole time to get their relationship to a point where an actual onscreen confirmation of their relationship was the only satisfying conclusion - and even before working on season 5, that noelle wasnt even sure that they'd be able to get a kiss/confirmation between the two because she was worried that if she revealed her cards too soon that she would be rejected.

@@mykelmicalromance I realy hate people hating in this show dor its lgbt representation. I'm straight but it was an absolute joy to watch the representation. I know lots of people who are bi (no one actualy gay oddly enough) and it's amazing to see this representation especially when it isnt thrown in peoples faces and it is an important part of their character arc is just is them. I know for a fact my friend loves that representation. Also (spoiler alert),but season 5 with Catra and Adora there was absolutely no boundaries in terms of her sexuality and people judging her it was just both of them realising as they are about to lose each other that them spending time together recently has made them realise that they do infact have bigger feelings for one another. You saw in both of Adoras dreams that she just hopes she could have a future with Catra or have Catra by her side before she dies.
I dislike it because of the female cast(the males are not great too), but it's all opinions at the end of the day.

And loved no one I love those types of villains, They had her set up so perfect, Her friend left her, she gets treated badly by everyone in the horde. She had such the perfect set up to be the villain that goes out like a villain nope instead they just make her the good and turn her lesbian. R.I.P the books She was a badass in the books :)

@@lonniegabbie agree. if you rewatch all of their interactions you can pick up on it. adora doesn't show her feelings but the amount of times she gives catra a second, third, fourth chance kinda speaks for itself. i'm so glad she and adora did end up together, they knew each other so well and i feel like putting it off seriously until catra was on the good side was actually a good idea. if she had let herself say it out loud while she was with the horde, that would just confirm how she felt and would've made her "weaker". idk that probably made sense but i really liked their relationship being confusing at the beginning and then clearer once we actually had them in the same room on the same side together

Agree with your opinion on turning Catra good in last moment without even some kind of redemption arc, but not with one on Catra being fav character (she's my least favorite because of how lightly the crew, showrunner and fandom treated her and her actions compared to other characters', especially in the ending) & "Turning her lesbian", because

Scorpia is kind of front and center by the past two seasons and she is kind of obviously lesbian/bi. The only confirmed straight couple on screen is Mermista and Seahawk, and I'd say their relationship is as prevalent as the lgbt relationships (they're all side characters, granted Sea hawk and Mermista fight more with the protagonists). Entrapta and Hordak are another ambiguous developing straight relationship, which to me mirrors Scorpia and Catra. I don't think it would be good to cut through the ambiguity of those questions you have with Catra/Adora. They are *at least* best frenemies (friends turned enemies), and I really like how Adora is developing to... not care about Catra. Catra's toxic. Catra may love Adora in a more-than-platonic-sort-of-way but I don't think there's any argument for Adora reciprocating that. The ambiguity of that relationship provides a lot of space for growth, imho. It'd kind of ruin things if Catra said "Don't leave me I LOVE you" to Adora in S1.
I'd say the Mermista & Seahawk relationship is a lot more prominent than the one-off of Bow's dad or the fringe characters Spinnerella and Netossa, even with S4 giving the latter at least a few more lines. But the show is still to my gay mind extremely gay. It might lack the explicit gay portrayal of central characters of Steven Universe, but the general *tone* is a lot more gay.
And I don't think Entrapta & Hordak were really meant to have much romantic energy, not nearly that of Scorpia & Catra. To me it seemed much more like a matter of friendship between peers. Neither seem like they're that interested in romance anyway. There's a big difference in how scorpia says "friend" about Catra and how Entrapta says it about Hordak. Entrapta & Hordak was closer to something like Entrapta & Bow in how she talks to him.
Flower princess and archer boy also fit well together. She did ask him out to prom. That's serious! :D

Swiftwind IMHO started out pretty funny, but degenerated as the series went on. It's like they started out with a good idea for him, but didn't know how to follow through with him in the long term.
He needs development and some sort of plot significance
Maybe the creators said "it's complicated" because it really was complicated: Adora and Catra themselves might not have understood what they were feeling for each other (yet), and that makes perfect sense. Remember, these are young adults. Also, it fits with the general theme of figuring out who you are etc.

I love both the new and the old version of She-ra, but the reboot did do Swiftwind a major disservice. I wish they would of took a more fatherly route with him. Perhaps help keep Adora and the gang grounded, but that's just my personal opinion. Though they also made Catra 50xs better so I guess it's a fair trade off lol
(Also in the original Swiftwind had a unicorn family, and it was cute)

Season 4 Glimmer: Allow me to introduce myself
I really love how they showed her become the way she did. I don't hate her but getting overconfident because she got too much power and wanted everyone to listen to her was great.

I despise swift wind, I think the creators realize that this show has an audience of a wide age range and they still decided to put this pbs kids type character in the show, they could make the show so much better if they just trust the audience more
I find him to be a fantastically hilarious character myself but I can totally see why others dont like him
9:10 Cause they aren’t gonna spoil the main character relationship of the show just because people are too impatient to actually see it play out. 😂 (And Netflix controls a lot of what they’re allowed to put in the show, Noelle was concerned for a while that they would even be able to have the kiss at the end.)
I always saw Adora as being Asexual by choice and Catra as being Lesbian with a issue of trying to work out in her mind if she is and if she likes Adora like that or as a sister and that and her general bloodlust all helping fuel her evil. Honestly we only see one happy straight couple in the series and one that may not ever be a couple at all compared to three that are Gay/Lesbian.
Oh and I thought that shapeshifter was totally gender fluid - literally.

MadWILLCraft I did not want to go into It but a celibate person HAS desires for a partner but has set is aside. Your (good) Prest and nuns are examples of this. But they have a desire to be with a gender but repress it for a purpose. I get the feeling that outside of the required use of pronouns - she never has asked herself what she likes and has just stained focused on her goals.
I stand on my option and it is how I see it and until the Voice of God says something or someone sneaks out a writing bible I call it like I see it.

I like the show because how catra was, The way they said her up. How she was treated badly and how she was in a shadow of her best friend.

Yeah me too. I know some people see it as if Adora was in love with her the whole time, but I always got the impression that she may have loved Catra very deeply as a friend, but the romantic feelings started to develop around s5, whereas Catra was always in love with Adora, which she said in the finale. Just my perspective though...
I think Catra and Adora were just best friends as children, but nearer the time the show began, Catra started to develop genuine romantic feelings for Adora. When Adora leaves, this expands Catra's abandonment issues, and Catra begins lashing out because of how she feels.
Meanwhile, Adora is trying to reconcile the fact that she's starting to feel things when she does encounter Catra, with all the other crazy stuff going on. Like, even as early as Princess Prom, there's some extreme Gay Panic from both characters.
I think the creators do summarise it very well with 'it's complicated.' Because it is. We can't look at Catra and Adora's friendship, conflict or attraction in isolation, because all three are so deeply connected with each other.

i love how almost all these cons get revoked in later seasons ! other princesses are characterized more, we get a fun animal companion (melog) and i think the final season animation was really good too

With Adora and Catra’s relationship, it is complicated. But when you think about it, Adora didn’t even know what a Aunt was and the Horde probably didn’t teach their soldiers about love and romance. So Adora and Catra could have been in a relationship but didn’t know what to call it. (Just a theory please don’t hate me)
... I just realized season 4 and 5 were both his predictions to catra's endings. She was so bad in season 4 she almost got put down, but in season 5 she gets redeemed.
I feel like this show had totally different writers from season to season. Like Season 1 we were promised a circle of magical Runestone princesses to come by Light Hope. By Season 4, just kidding! It’s only the 5 side character princesses you already know plus She-Ra. Balance achieved. Roll credits.

(aNd gAy) I also love how catra wants to kill adora but every chance she gets, the gay gets the best of her. In conclusion, Catadora is canon 100% 😌

That's an interesting point, but I think he was referring more to gore and such. That being said, season 4 and even season 3 really nail this excellent existential dread. Mid season 3 finale i genuinely thought "oh god, this all right here." With season 4's finale, it's not that it's going to end, it's that the only hope is so small and flickering and distant that it seems that maybe giving up is actually possible, and that's so real that it messes with me. Horde prime has already won, they aren't fighting a potential oppressive government anymore, they're fighting an empire who holds all of the power, and they have virtually nothing. I haven't really seen a kids show play around with themes this heavy and broad before, so I really hope that season five gets announced soon, since right now it hasn't been confirmed to be renewed for another season.

thought i was the only one liking swift wind. he was a normal horse and now can fly and talk? who wouldn't react the way he has. He even show annoyance when others mention that he is talking. plus some of the things he say made sense. like how he want stuff for the other horses, showing how he thinks of others of his kind. really don't get the hate he has. he trying to help.

Realizing that me liking Swiftwind (or at the very least not ruining anything for me) is the toastiest of hot takes.

While I personally also loved the idea of Catra and Adora becoming a cannon couple, the show makes them out to be through and through siblings. Their struggles and conflicts as siblings is just as valuable as their could be romantic interpretation of their relationship. I think it's more likely that the writers have their hands tied when it comes to making Catradora cannon. But exploring their relationship as siblings should not go undervalued. Many people have complicated relationships witch siblings with family in general. And familial relationships fuck us up as often if not more so than romantic relationships. If the show aims to make an example of Catra and Adora I think several kids and young adults will benefit from learning from the mistakes made by both characters to better carry out their own relationships with their families.

Season 5: you had no IDEA what was coming
I dunno I always interpreted the relationship between Adora and Catra to be more of a sisterly relationship. Catra's hatred being response to feelings of abandonment and being left alone to deal with a abusive parental figure and how it's easier to blame your siblings about it than confront abusive parents or leave the situation, I never really got a romantic vibe from them but that's just my opinion
There's a lot of romantic coding there, e.g. in the ball episode and at other times as well. Like you I'm leaning towards it mainly being presented as a close friends/sisterly relationship, but the coding is still there.

There are so many incredible psychoanalyses of she ra and they are all sooooo good! Really helps you understand the depths of character in this show.
You know what She-Ra and Steven Universe have (beyond being amazingly gay)? They have heart... You can tell everyone cares about each other, and when their is animosity, it's an animosity that's built on failures to care. And in the end love is what saves the day. And I'm down with that.

I think dance around The Questions is amazing for the fans. The canon confirmation desincorages the fanfics and the creativity of the fans, in my opinion.
My Little Pony and Adventure Time danced around most of the stuff until the last episodes, and it was pretty epic when the canon was confirmed. I guess She-Ra is going to do the same.
I never really liked Catradora purely because I feel they were too toxic for each other but I can absolutely get past that and love the show overall. Because I do. I love the show; it's a childhood memory for me despite being in my late teens when it released.

The biggest let down of this show is that the creators stated that neither He-Man nor Skeletor exists on this timeline, so we wont expect to see them, which SUCKS

You may or may not have seen the old school Rainbow Brite show. It is possible that She-ra's show writers were trying to make Swiftwind into something similar to Raibow Brite's "Starlight." He was a raibow maned horse who could talk, although he didn't have wings or a horn.

You need to upload an updated version of your thoughts. Season 4 was phenomenal, especially for Scorpia and Glimmer's arc.
I never really see Catra and Adora as a couple. I see their relationship as being more like sisters. They grew up together and were close and Adora was always there for Catra and had her back. And then she left Catra, making her feel betrayed and abandoned. I never see or get a hint of any romantic tension between the two. I wouldn't have a problem if there was a thing between them that's more than a sister relationship but I just don't feel like it's there and I think if they do take it that way it's just cuz fans pushed for it and Netflix will just give in to the fanfiction.
The thing is everyone is so eager to jump to the conclusion that the only logical outcome for how the characters act is they're lesbian or gay. Like with Scorpina everyone thinks she's so caring about Catra because she's in love with her and wants her when honestly it could just be that's she's generally a good caring person and wants to be best friends with Catra. It doesn't necessarily mean she's in love with her. I'm just looking at this how the characters act and how they're developing. Again I can't stress enough how I have no problem with the characters in question being in love, but I want to see it more organically happening and not just be done because that's what fans want or cuz Netflix wants to show everyone their open minded just to get people in their corner.

In my opinion they should have kept catra villain. To me season 5 was just a money getter. Really hoping that catra would just stay a villain and not love any one, I wanted to see the look and shadow Weaver's face, When she saw catra, It would have been the best thing ever to see shadow Weaver knowing that she made something so dark. Especially one the show depicting that she was treated badly by members in the horde and people outside the horde

I kinda hope that Catra and Adora don't end up together, not because I dislike LGBT representation but because I want a different type of representation. I want to see them show it as Catra is/was in love with Adora but Adora is not in love with Catra, I don't remember the last time that I saw an LGBT not get together with the one they had fallen in love to, it is always that they either are gay but neither is interested in the other or that they are gay and get together, basically never do you have an LGBT character be rejected (convincingly, aka. not for a joke).

@@SarcasticChorus Sad but probably true. Catra's done WAY too many horrible things to ever truly be forgiven by Adora, even if she starts her redemption arc in the second half of the season. They'll make amends obviously but not to ever be canon. Which means the only possible endgame Canon couple is most likely Glimmer x Adora and probably Entrapta X Hordak. Which REALLY sucks cause don't get me wrong I still love the other characters and their dynamics and all, but Catradora was obviously the only ship pulling me through this series. And I've never been sucked into the Glimmerdora ship (Glimmer x Adora) and Entrapta x Hordak shipping as much as I could since obviously Catra's character and frenemy relationship with Adora was the one true hook for me to watch the series at all for me. Everything is just secondary in my opinion or support.
Then that's just depressing truth.

I wonder if the lower quality animation is due to Illumination's purchase of Dreamworks. Illumination tends to be pretty budget tight in its execution of animation.
I'm a actually looking forwords to season 5 if it ever gets made, and the inevitability of the He-man cast showing up, the fact that Adora is still Price Adam/ He-man's faternal twin sister still being cannon is very hinted at if your paying attention to tge backgroung elements in the show.

I do prefer creators stay out of shipping wars for this express purpose, especially in terms of any gay relationships. You're not representing anyone in a positive way if you slap two characters together with no build up or meaningful connection.
It doesn't stick.
I prefer my romance to make sense. Even if the characters don't show open romantic interest in each other it can still work if they clearly gel well with each other in their interactions.
But hey, only time will really tell if they go down that path here and if they can actually make such an outcome satisfying. I mean we all know a certain claw handed character who would certainly fit the bill far more satisfyingly for the cat.
