  • Jimmy is one of the most underrated Tool songs and is one of my favorites. I have received many requests for this song. Not to challenging technique wise but can be difficult with all the slight variation and numbers of riffs. Great example of shifting Time Signatures

    I agree, although fret location has nothing to do with "how" he plays it. Emotion, feel, and expression have nothing to do with the area of the fretboard you play on. That's really what I meant. Everyones guitar/amps are different. Just because Jones plays something 'here' doesn't mean you have to. Pitch is pitch and it might sound better, for you as a player and your gear, to play it somewhere differently. As long as you but yourself into it, it will sound great.

      I wish I was you and started with TOOL because there songs aren’t necessarily extremely hard. They have hard sections but they teach you how to get out of 4/4 jail lol

      @@marczwander893 well I never learned it hahaha, for years i didnt knew how to learn guitar really i was stuck on the pentatonic and covers bored me
      But a few months ago/ a year ago I discovered backing tracks on the Chusss youtube channel and I learned sooo much

    Last night, I watched an orchestra play at a bar in Arkansas. There was a violin player who looked like a friend of mine and I couldn't place it. Drove me nuts. Now, I realize you're the guy I was thinking of. Have a violin playing, brother with a white man's afro?

    Ive been really enjoying youre great Tool lessons! Nice Adam Jones tone you're getting too, especially for digital, it fits it very, very well!

  • @axeofcreation
    @axeofcreation  12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    First, if you up your gauge to 60 (which is crazy and thicker than my 7th string!) you will need to properly setup your guitar, then you shouldn't have any tuning issues. Secondly, I use a regular .10 gauge set, it's only drop D. I've used thicker gauges or mixed sets but it's somewhat unnecessary (for drop D). That being said, since Tool riffs are mostly on the lower strings, adding thickness will directly impact your tone!

  • @dylanmccallister6739
    @dylanmccallister6739 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm learning both this and passenger at the same time. now I understand the need for 2 guitars, so much tuning

    • @axeofcreation
      @axeofcreation  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're better off just learning one of them in the "wrong" tuning rather then tuning back and forth. You only need to be in the "right" tuning to play along or jam with people.

  • @7johnson
    @7johnson 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    My favorite tool song.

  • @axeofcreation
    @axeofcreation  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Depends what tunings you go back and forth from, Drop D shouldn't effect your instrument. It's more the string gauge. Thicker gauges has more tension which pulls on the neck causing tuning/intonation issues. Pick a gauge your comfortable with and have it setup with those strings.

    Great lesson man, nailed the song :)
    My only gripe is your comment that not knowing how AJ plays a certain riff, as long as the notes are the same, it doesn't really matter. Personally I think the reason Jones' guitar playing stands out is exactly that reason, HOW he plays each note.
    I've heard alot of people play Tool and just play "the notes", and there's no magic in it. Just my two cents :)

    I have an Epi SilverBurst that i have spent a great deal (of time) modifying, made it look like a teardrop silverburst how Gibson does it, added a Seymour Duncan Distortion SH-6 in the bridge reverse zebra black and cream to match the cream binding, and I'm constantly changing tunings, maybe confusing the neck? Guess I need to set it up for drop D and maybe add thicker gauges on the e, B, and G strings balance it out and let it set, designate it my drop D guitar since AJ doesn't solo much

    Doesn't ending on the '1' make it a 1/2 step above the root giving that sense of incompleteness, which is something Tool would purposely do.

  • @Frippster22
    @Frippster22 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    What string gauge do you use on your Agile? I've been using the Zakk Wylde custom heavy (10-60) and while I do enjoy the low end the thicker strings seem to put out for chord work, and the thinner strings for faster fret play and easier bends, but the problem is that it's so unbalanced I'm constantly having to tune the G and other higher strings, any recommendations or advice?

    One of the most confounding aspects of guitar playing, and one of the most ignored, is string choice. The same note sounds different on every string. Generally speaking, thicker strings and frets closer to the nut have a richer tone, but it varies too much from set to set and can be affected by more variables than anyone can consciously keep track of. I think it is a defining part of a players voice, but it's a journey of self discovery. Tone comes from strings and fingers before anything else.
