We have a '97 Coleman Bay port and 5 kids. We got set up to a science. All the tent trailer stuff for day to day stays in the trailer are left in the trailer and have a home where they go. You know everything has a place, everything in it's place. Coolers for additional food stuff not for the inside fridge goes under the bed pull outs enclosed with a skirt. Clothes are carried in individual duffle bags which are stored at the foot or head of each person's sleeping area. Chairs and extra things are put in the trailer at break down or in car in designated crates. Break down and set up takes 15 minutes at most.
Yeah. I think pop-ups are best appreciate when thinking of them as the world’s nicest tents. If you wanted a cheap RV….you will likely be disappointed.
I invested in an electric cooler. Best camping buy of my life. It can freeze and cool. Quiet. Amazing and roomy. If there isn’t an electric source, I can hook it up to my Jackery and it will run forever using my solar panels. Single female so I don’t have a lot of food.
We had a basic pop up camper like yours, no shower no bathroom and worked perfect for us for many years but once we got older and mother nature calls once or twice in the middle of the night you really appreciate that full size camper.
You should keep Damprid buckets in several areas of the camper when you close up for winter. We put them inside our boat center console where the wires and electronics are located so it doesn't get a lot of moisture in there during the winter, its sealed in a white plastic cover shrink wrapped.
you dont need a truck to pull a pop up like yours im pulling my coachman clipper 107 sport with my 2012 civic si coupe lol i was amazed how well it tows! saved me from buying a new suv or truck
Regardless of which kind of camper you get it will take you a long time to set up the first few times but you get fast at it, like 15 or 20 minutes fast.
We bought a fully loaded fancy popup in 2000. Had tons if problems, but learned we didn't need hot/cold running water or other fancy things. We downsized to a Jayco eagle 10ud and have camped with our children since their birth and through 21 years. We don't use on-board water at all. You can use the sink as storage during the trip, or just cover it with a tray.
Thanks, that's a helpful video. I had to laugh, though. The idea that some places won't allow a popup because they have bears in the area ... as a 35 year tent camper in Alaska, I just can't wrap my head around that. Those campgrounds should educate campers about clean camps and bear safety, not reject business over unnecessary fears.
I found that hilarious too. I assume he's talking private campgrounds who really don't know much about bear safety but maybe truck/trailer campers aren't as careful as us tent campers?
We love our popup! It's a 97 Flagstaff that we've had about 15 years. We've taken it so many places. We did spend the money to buy the screen room that attaches to the awning and it was totally worth it. It gave us so much more space to spread out and also get away from the bugs in the evening. Over the years we have our setup down to about 20 minutes lol. I agree it's really important though to take only what you really use and have stuff specifically for the camper, makes it all much easier.
We had a basic popup . No heater. Icebox, not frig. We did many of the same things that the video points out. Some additional ideas. Got a small apartment frig. Moved the picnic table under the awning and put the frig on the table by the camper in order to plug in. Was able to place the frig inside the pop up, on the floor thru the half door for traveling. Used all plastic utensils, plastic cups, paper coffee cups and plates. Just threw everything away after use. Used bag chairs. Got astroturf carpet piece for under the awning. Easy to fold up and clean Did not bring perishable food (milk, eggs, bread, etc.) Just went shopping when we got there.
I put luggage rack and carrier on top of my popup, load up dog kennel, lawnchairs and Mother's upwalker. All light weight but bulky, then hitch rack. Really helpful
We grew up using a camper shell that went in the pickup bed of the truck had a lot of memories in that camper as a kid the only state we didn't make it to was Maine Mom Dad and us three boys it definitely takes this science to make it work we all had our own jobs when we pulled into somewhere cooperation is definitely the key 2
Another quick tip is to have an easy place to wash your hands on the go. A laundry detergent bottle with some holes drilled in it will take care of that. Tie a string to the bottle and a foot treadle to the string to tip the bottle.
We had a tent trailer for 11years. Lived every minute. When we started loving like something out of the Grapes of Wrath , we decided to get a 22 foot 5th wheel....It was my favorite....of course we graduated to a 34 ft 5th wheel...worse ever mistake... Too much work setting up and maintaining. Now we are old and had to give it all up😢
It is hard to find that sweet spot between just enough and stuff you don’t use or is just a hassle to maintain and use. And you might still be able to do short trips, but even if not you did something in owning the pop up and campers that many think of, but never actually do.
Thanks for sharing. I live in Milwaukee Wisconsin and have 6 camping trips planned for this year with my 92 Jayco Pop-Up. I can’t wait until Memorial Day Weekend. So I have a portable toilet and I use it for only # 1 and have it set up in a shower/changing tent. They sale them at Walmart. The porta potty is not that bad to deal with. Please continue to video tape your vacations this summer. I keep saying that I’ve got to do a video on my pop-up and put it up on my TH-cam page. Happy Camping. 😊
Glad this popped up (no pun intended) on my home page. We've been thinking about getting a camper to boondock in the national forests around us (Arizona) but have an older jeep with an underpowered V6 and 3500 pound towing capacity, which translates in the real world to maybe 2000 pounds.
Have had a Palamino pop up, 5th wheel and now back to trailmanor popup. Palamino was ez tow ez load. One person could DO the whole thing in 10 min. 5th wheel was nice for fall camping. Warmer, easier to hitch and unhitch. 24 ft, 3500 lbs. Towed well. Trailmanor has been great so farm. Easy tow, easy set up, lots of privacy and room. Don't use the bathroom except for storage. Never have used bathrooms in any of our rvs. The casette toilet in the Palamino was a great idea. That's what the people that bought it liked. They had two small kids.
Excellent popup video , pretty much the same reason we are on our second popup instead of a hard side , size and weight . I can store it in my garage and pull it with ever vehicle I own . Ours has a slide dinette which makes it huge inside and since we’re older we have a potty but the larger style that has the slide in cassette you access from outside , we can go 4 or 5 nights before having to empty it and it has a nice pour spout so no mess , can’t wait to see your upcoming camping trips especially with the little one tagging along now .
We have a 40ft Travel Trailer. I think the worst thing that irritates me is the set up. That takes up most of the time....and when the wife says "I can still feel the motions." So, I have to go back out and re-balance it. Thats what irritates me. As far anything else...well I let the wife take care of that. I am simple...
I have had travel trailers and pup's I can assure you I'm always faster getting a pup set up or taken down and road ready than I ever was with a travel trailer, mostly because with a pup I camp with less stuff.
@@gapeach51170 . I made it from years of experience and looking online as well as the service manual that I was given when I bought either my camper or one of my many boats. It's not that difficult. I simply just got a pad of paper and started noting things that I needed to pay attention to. I eventually came up with my own ideas and I'm not going to lie to you...some of it was trial and error. But I eventually found out what works best for me. In time, you will too. Just be patient and try not to get frustrated to much. It's worth it in the end.
Turn the fridge on a day or two before your trip, that way it's cold when your using it on the way to your destination and then it won't take long to cool your food
You do realize that there are campers with a sink that is covered? The faucet folds down and a piece that matches the counters covers the sink, so you get both benefits. I highly suggest it.
Electric tounge jack, damp rid is a must. Cover while not using. Single axle trailers are good for flat landers, wont get the speed wobbles going down hill.
Having only 30 minutes for set up is nothing compared to my husband who wanted everything just so. So it would take about 2 hours to get all set with the canopy to be able to sit and relax. Oh and take down was just as long.
Thanks for the info, very interesting , I'm planning on retirement this summer, and to be honest I was thinking more of an RV, of course a used one, I'm not a rich man, but now that I've seen your video the pop-up seems very practical , because I also have a V6 1500 ram ,and my max weight is about 5,000 , so by the time I pack it up with all the goodies, I'll be right in my max ,and it seems very cozy so now I'm leaning towards the pop-up I thank you for your video it made a believer out of me 👍🇺🇸
As we all know, setting up camp takes way more than 20mins. And breaking down is way more. Ive tent camped all my life, suv packed full. But having a hard side trailer changed everything. Comfy bed, own bathroom with shower. House on wheels, and they pull easy. Maintenance and up keep is pricey tho. Makes tent camping cheap
I had a 1996 Rockwood. I enjoyed it for a couple of years and the cable broke and I couldn’t find anyone that could fix it. And when I did it was way more than I paid for it. Never again! Next I’m going to get a high roof ford transit 250 long wheel base so I can pull my boat.
Good video Jack! Hey Sam and Lil Jack! Nice to see all of yall. Have you checked on the pop up covers? I'm thinking of just using Flextech. We take a 10x10 with us, rather than using our awning. I've said I was gonna take our little refrigerator out, but haven't done it yet. I've been told you should run the refrigerator on propane while transporting. I don't know how I feel about that. We bought a fold up sink/table, basically a portable outdoor fish prep table. No cooking inside. I also bought a shower/toilet popup tent and we have a portable toilet. We just bought our first pop up camper used from a family member. It's a 2010 Jayco Jay Series 1010. It needs some parts replaced. Where is the best place to look online for parts. I.e. the plug (screws on and off) under the camper that releases the on board water supply is missing. What is that called? Where can I get a replacement?
Contemplating still. Although I have to say nobody should ban any kind of campers. If a bear wants to come in and get hit with a 44 magnum slug in the face, that’s its business. By the way, the ad that just popped up as I was watching, was for a bearskin hoodie. How ironic.

two hours setting up camp with tents , matresses, sleeping bags ect ect .... so yeah i am gonna love 20 mins

The thing I like about my camper is it didn’t cost a fortune to buy or store. If I only use it a few weeks a year I don’t feel bad about it
I used a popup for 15 yrs, then went to a 6x10 cargo trailer for about 10 yrs, finally 3 yrs ago bought a 16 ft camper with bunks and a bathroom

Same. I dump ice in it and keep soda cans there. I've never once hooked up the water.

Freeze a couple water bottles and put em in the fridge, helps maintain temp, also fill the fridge there more efficient that way.

I was most impressed to learn that there is a dedicated space beneath the camper to store your wife. Very handy!
Another quick tip is to have an easy place to wash your hands on the go. A laundry detergent bottle with some holes drilled in it will take care of that. Tie a string to the bottle and a foot treadle to the string to tip the bottle.
Another trick you could do with a pop up with coolers is if you stick them under your wings in the shade they'll actually stay cool also
I just went on a 20 day road trip/camping trip and we set up and tore down our tent over 15 times. The more you do it, the faster it gets!

I finally uploaded a short video of my pop up camper on my TH-cam channel.
Use a cordless drill. You'll set up like a pit crew.

I've got some great childhood memories of our pop-up camper
Great video Jack. This is why I have a preventative maintenance list for both my camper and my boat. It will save you in the long run. Keep it up man
Did you make your own or found an online source? Can you share for a first timer? :)

TC-11 corrosion inhibitor is a life saver for protecting electrical equipment from water/humidity.

Good stuff Jack! You guys are living life to the fullest and even more so now with little Jack😎
Always!
Finally your guys are back. Wife and I love your videos and journey..

Whether you have a pop up an RV or a travel trailer, there is always set up and the bigger the RV or Trailer the longer the set up.
You should install a winch on the inside pulley system and then you just push a button to pop it up or let it down it changed my life
I'm thinking about buy a pop up. What does the pulley do? How would I install the winch. Single mom sorry for the questions
"Check your lugs"... WOW!!! Thank YOU...!!! And what about 'Baby Samantha'....?
Excelente video, thanks for guiding me, now I know what to look for when I buy my first camper ever in the next two weeks. Thank you.
Aww, baby and his glass and Jesse! So cute!

Dude, buy an electric up and down switch on it. We had one on our popup and loved it
Does the camper still have a crank system if the electric switch stops working?
I had a 1996 Rockwood. I enjoyed it for a couple of years and the cable broke and I couldn’t find anyone that could fix it. And when I did it was way more than I paid for it. Never again! Next I’m going to get a high roof ford transit 250 long wheel base so I can pull my boat.
I will be camping at Big Lagoon very soon, really looking forward to it.
Good to see yea! Hope all is well little Yak too! Happy Easter to you all!
Do you use a point of use water filter? I bought portable fresh water tanks. They hold 7gallons I think.
Thanks for sharing this video with us!
The pop up portion of set up is pretty small. With a regular travel trailer you have to pull it in, disconnect, level, pull stuff out, etc.
Hey Yak put a large bowel of ice in the fridge and it will cool quicker 1/2 the time.
Thanks are neighbor has one and I said that is a good idea thanks for sharing your experience. I like it!
Pro tip: Put a $2 bag of ice into your campers fridge to help it get to temp faster, you will have a cold fridge within an hour or two assuming it is working.
You should look up a Fleetwood Scorpion S2 (they have other models as well S1 and S3) they are pretty nice
Got 33ft 2 room travel trailer and love it
The storage factor is totally worth the setup time. I'm not spending $140 a month to store the camper.
I bought and made many upgrades to a 2004 Viking Epic tt. Am planning to go camping this summer but not sure where to go? New to this. I live in Edmonton, Alberta and will be camping on my own. BTW, I am mid-fifties in case that makes any difference. Liked your video and all the suggestions. Well done.
What a cute little famly! Good job!
Looking forward to more pop up camping adventures. Happy Easter to you and your family🐰
Same to you!
I'm a firm believer in you rather have it and not need it. Place a nice set of bamboo over a sink for cou ter space. Idk.
Thats crazy people have a house and a camper, I'm just trying to get a cheap beater to live in since life is unaffordable to most people.
When you're on the go, where do you Park when you go shopping? Are there places that have long parking spots for two vehicles?
The word you’re looking for is cognizant.
Very interesting & informative. Love the Pabst Blue ribbon Can in #9! Cute lil family. Camp on!
I just got my pop up camper. It’s an 89 Dutchmen skamper. Very basic. No ac, no bathroom
Americans have such huge cars, that truck is mega! I wish i could get one like that. I have a land rover and was thinking it would be enough to tow a camper, now seeing your vehicle im rethinking i mean, technically my vehicle is big for the uk 😂😅
You literally answered all my questions! Thank you so much for this!
Is it standard for pop up campers to have issues letting mosquitos in? We are camping in a brand new Rockwood Freedom and they are just pouring in through the gaps. We having been finding gaps and stuffing rags and paper towels in them. Is this normal? Are pop ups supposed to seal better than this?
Yak
I second your big fan but until you've used one of those carpet dryers LOL
No way watchin in Lincoln and the blue angels legit flew over my house air shows tomorrow
Nice video. I’m looking forward of buying camper but hasn’t decided which one, pop up or regular camper.
Link for the reflective blankets?
little Jack gone be saying "orange go Tigers" in no time, good video guys
Good vid. If you come up here to bear country in helen you can just stay in one of my cabins then you don't have to deal with the pesky oversized wannabe racoons. You may even get to make one of those creek fishing videos that seem to be the cool thing for clickbaiters nowdays. Lol. Great to see the beautiful Samantha stepping back into the spotlight as well.
What about winter camping??
I have my eyes set on a 1998 coleman destiny rio grande... great condition for its age but ill be taking it back to florida where i live. I am concerned about the humidity warping it. Any thoughts or suggestions?
Good video and thanks for the awesome content on the Pop Up Camper!
I use iceless electric cooler
We have sooo many pop up camper stories lol
Can one person set up these things? Is this a good option for a solo camper?
You always have great pop up content! My 8yo wants us to make a camping page and I'm curious how you organize all your footage for your videos. I love how you talk to the camera but then you'll have video of the camp site/pop-up/whatever you're talking about. Did you take a class on doing this?
Thank you! Self taught. Ive been doing this a while though lol! Thanks for watching!
Cool video. Why do you use a large fan at your campsite?
Do you even insure it? Something that cost a 2-3K?
I looking at buying a pop up, and this video was super helpful!
Awesome! Thank you!
Thank you for the video.
Thanks for watching!
Sound advise, thanks!
Get an aliner they are great !❤
I'm thinking of getting one but I'm renting one first to try it out. I also have Arthritis so I'm wondering I'd be able to set it up alone?
What beach was that? Beautiful
Hello Pensacola!
U have a tent on a trailer then ?,but they are nice to have ?❤❤❤
We just bought our first pop up camper used from a family member. It's a 2010 Jayco Jay Series 1010. It needs some parts replaced. Where is the best place to look online for parts. I.e. the plug (screws on and off) under the camper that releases the on board water supply is missing. What is that called? Where can I get a replacement?
I hav a 07 avalanche. I'm looking into pop ups
Thank you for this, we realized we didn't want one after all. 🤣
Contemplating still. Although I have to say nobody should ban any kind of campers. If a bear wants to come in and get hit with a 44 magnum slug in the face, that’s its business. By the way, the ad that just popped up as I was watching, was for a bearskin hoodie. How ironic.
9:40 I would be following that straight in there😜😜😜
I have a 8ft 1997 star pop up is this ok
Where did she get the curtains?
Why did she only get 3 min for her pov 😂 i watched this whole episode to hear what she said
