- Cleaning the Aperture blades in NIKON NIKKOR 85mm 2.0 AIS, was an easy task. just be careful taking off the frontring, theres is a little set screw, just loosen it and grap the ring and take it off counterclockwise.
Next, grap the front lensgroup and unscrew counterclockwise.
Now you can see the aperture system with the blades.
Take off the black innerring that sits on the bajonet with 3 small screw, and next the bajonet.
Be aware of how the aperture system and how the bajonet is connected to the body (the hook that connect to the aperture mecanism, and the other tap that connect to the aperture ring with the F numbers on.
Next, inside the body from the front, DO a mark at the aperture plate and the body so you have the right position for the aperture.
Next, unscrew the 2 screw and take out the hole aperture system and clean it in ISOPROPYL ALCOHOL (99%).
To re-assemble do it in the reverse order....

thank you for your tutarials! I've been looking for something similar for a nikkor 85mm 1.4 ais I recently bought. There is some play with the frontring, do you think is just a problem with the lateral screw that might be loose? I would simple try to screw it better but I need an incredibly small screwdriver! also for some reason there is a strange piece of paper attached at the base of the fronring that appears only when focused at close distance...

With that glue on screws, will it be possible to unscrew them later without damage?
I have nikon 17-55 2.8 ..it is always over exposed after f5 i check aperture is little slow..it this same procedure to clean 17-55 2.8?

Hi Mike not sure to understand what you do at around 4:30 before removing the screws ? And second question do we really need to remove the back for accessing the aperture blade. It seems full accessible from the front ... thx for your explanations.

+mritzcu Well, oil is a good thing, but use as less as posible, but when there is oil on the shutter blades you can use Isopropylalcohol 99% or Lighter Fluid and a lot's cotton swab...
DO NOT use acetone it will bend /melting and simply destroy the blades
Hi, Mike, thanks for answer. Well, i have used spray contact cleaner, and it worked. When i have bought this camera the shutter was blocked half way and with the mirror lifted up. Now all, shutter curtain in all speeds work as intended, but when i have put film in... sometime the curtain is blocking, 5 mm before to complete the shut.
The weird thing is, why make this just with film in? Any idea?
I really struggle with these types of videos.

I have actually think about making a film about the Rollei TLR with a Syncro Compur shutter, and specially about cleaning the slow gear and adjusting it to correct 1. Second.
I'm also planing a film of completely disassemble a Compur shutter.
The screw lock I use, there are 2 different types, the blue that is a middle tight and it's possible to disassemble it's the Locktite 243.
The new one I have buy is the purple Locktite 222 that is a light tight screw lock, it's very good for small screws like those in cameras and lenses.
ALL the Locktite bottles are red, but the fluid inside are in different colors.. Blue, purple or red or green.

Hello, sorry for asking this here, but I've looked everywhere and I can't find the answer. I have a 16mm Fisheye AI-S f/2.8 and it doesn't focus on infinity. I think it's because the coating on the front lens is really starting to wear off ... Do you know if I can just remove the front lens to maybe clean it and make sure it's because of the coating ?

Well, I don't have this lens, but the coating has nothing to do with the infinity problem, but maybe the front lens or the back lens has come loose.
It could also be a problem with a stiff focus ring, or dust and dirt in the focus system so it's not possible to move the focus ring all the was to infinity.
The focus ring itself can also be loose.

I have a Nikon 28-85 f3.5-4.5 ai-s lens and whenever I turn the arpurture ring the blades are unresponsive but when I pull the diaphragm lever the blades open and snap shut which is normal. Do you know what the problem is and/or how to fix it? Thanks in advance
Cory Carey It look's like the aperturing which has a connection arm inside the lens, that simply miss the connection with the little tap on the side of the lens assembly. Maybe the lens have been disassembled and then, not been assembled correct again.
I haven't work with this lens, but I guess the solution could be that:
Open the lens from the bajonet, then look for the aperture arm that has connection with the aperture system, try move the aperture ring and see if there are something broken.

My 85mm F2 Nikkor also suffers from this problem! I thought that my copy was ruined forever, until I found your video. I am VERY timid about taking apart a lens, but this video has given me courage.

Some things to remember when working with aperture blades, remember to set a small on the inside of the barrel where you can see the aperture assembly and before take out the aperture plate. And take a lot pictures durring the process, it's your only backup
What liquid are you cleaning the blades with?
Hi Mike, I need to do this (Sticky Aperture)with a 105mm f1.8 AIS. Would you suggest approaching the aperture blades in a similar way (order) like you did with the 85mm AIS? Many thanks!

The clear "fluid" for cleaning the aperture blades, is actually 99% pure Isopropylalchohol, I'm sure you can it in the apotek or materialist.

The function of the Screw Lock / Sealant is to lock the screw so it NOT loosen itself, but with a tool it's possible to unscrew it again.
The Locktite 222 (PURPLE COLOR in RED BOTTLE) is the best for cameras and lenses, here is more info: www.loctite.co.uk/loctite-4087.htm?nodeid=8802623422465
The Screw Lock / Sealant is NOT really a glue, like a normal glue for paper and super glue. It's more like a paste or a thin sticky fluid.

I tried on both DX and FX and the blur is still there. I am going to try to see if nikon Japan can tell me what to Unscrew first to take out the front lens

You could try it on another camera, just to see if there is a difference.

+Miguel Hyde Thank's Miguel, to take out the lens assembly you need to unscrew halfway out the very little set screw on the side of the front ring, as I show at 3:00.
Then fully unscrew the front ring counterclockwise. next as shown at 3:57 now you can counterclockwise unscrew the front lens group.

+mikeno62 Saw the video several times and the lens is not the same model, saw it now. My lens is 213370 serial, guess i have to take out the focus ring on mine. Might be that?
set the focus ring to as near as posible (shorter than 0.85..), then you can see the little set screw (as you already know now) :-)

Okay, well that explane why it's not the same lens, it's because my lens is a Ai-s lens.
To open it from the front, I would guess you have to unscrew the ring on top of the focus ring, that is just above the rubber...., NOT the front ring for the front lens. Maybe there is a little set screw under the rubber. just an idea.

So watching this, if im just cleaning the gummy aperture blades, do I really have to dismantle the lens mount end ? It appears that the lens mount end could remain untouched and just front end undone to clean aperture blade assembly 🤔 or am I missing something that could mess it up ?
Well, I just me who think it's more easy to put in the aperture assembly when the lens mount is taken out, and also there are less parts to mess up with.

I acctually just got a AF Nikkor 35-105mm 1:3.5-4.5 that have some problems with the zoom, so I think I will make a film out of it sooner.
I have not yet try the AF Nikkor 18-105mm, maybe it will come sooner or later... and if it happen, I will make a film about it.

Thank you for this video. I can't get any success disassembling front part of the lens. i unscrewed the set screw, but the front part doesn't rotate as shown in video. What i'm doing wrong?

The little set screw has to be loosen as much as nessesary, well, I hope it's the same lens you have so it is the same way it loosen. But it is possible that the front ring has got some screw lock from the factory, that can on some lenses be very thight to get off.
So the solution is to buy some very sticky gloves in the hardware store. I had have some lenses where they where really really thight, but I get them off by using a lot of power, and then I was lucky the ring or lens came off.
Maybe it's the same problem with your lens.

mikeno62 Maybe i should disassemble the rear part first like you did? Because i tried for the second time & even with full force was unable to unscrew the front barrel.
I was thinking that It could actually also be the problem that the front barrel has been thighten wrong from the begining or by a repair tech. Take a closer look to see if there is any small bump or similar wrong detailes. It would have the effect that it is so thight, or the worst case....., if somebody have glued the ring (do not that...)

I have another question to you - do you have any knowledge of Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 Ai-s? I disassembled it lo clean the inner lenses & the aperture pin felt apart. To be honest the construction of this pin is the silliest i have ever sin - nearly nothing except friction holds it. Now i can't put it back into place. Only reasonable solution i see here is to use the glue. Maybe you could advice me something?

About the Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 Ai-s, I have not yet made a film about it.

Thanks for your excellent channel and instructions. To clean some fungus I have taken apart a Nikon 85mm f1.8 pre-1975 lens as far as taking off all the outer parts and extracting the lens barrel but got stuck on removing the retaining ring that holds the rear element in place. Could not loosen the little set screw on the retainer ring and may have stripped it, any advice?

Just an idea, If you have a "Dremel" electric tool, you could maybe drill it out, I have not yet try the Nikon 85mm f1.8 pre-1975.

I applied my Dremel tool with the appropriate drill bit but no success. I can't drill any deeper otherwise I will hit the glass. Maybe there was no screw in the first place.
The lens assembly looks very much like the Nikkor 105mm 1:2.5 that you disassembled in another video. However I'm unable to unscrew the rear element. Front elements also won't move and I'm afraid to scratch the glass if I try the spanner too often. I wish you could take a look at it!

I look at the internet to find some info about this lens, but there is not any disassemble info or a repair manual, or even a parts manual.
One thing pop up in my head, it's just an idea... but it could be a solution..., the front retaining ring that hold the front element, if you take off the rubber on the focus ring, then you will probably see that there maybe is some kind of glue between the front ring and the focus ring. To take away the glue you can use some acetone..., but gently..., I think it must be that way it is assembled. Hope it can help you.
